2023: I met APC govs to solicit their support – Tinubu

The National Leader of All Progressives Congress and presidential aspirant, Bola Tinubu, has given reasons why he met with members of the Progressives Governors Forum on Monday.

Tinubu while briefing Journalists after the meeting, the former Lagos State Governor noted that he met with the governors to seek their support for his ambition to become Nigeria’s president.

“My mission here is to seek collaboration, support, and encouragement of my party, the APC, for my ambition to become the president of the Federal Republic of Nigeria as a replacement for President Muhammadu Buhari after his tenure,” he said.

When asked about Osinbajo’s declaration and 2023 ambition, Tinubu said, “I don’t have any son grown up enough to make such declaration.”

“The fact that we have people in our party that express desire to lead the party into the highest office in the electoral contest shows how much this our party has resonated with Nigerians and our party members.”

Speaking on the purpose of the meeting, Bagudu said Tinubu met the governors to formally briefed them on his intention to lead Nigeria after Buhari’s tenure in 2023.

It could be recalled that Tinubu met with the APC governors at the Kebbi State Governor’s Lodge, Asokoro, Abuja, hours after Vice President Yemi Osinbajo declared his intention to succeed the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.) in 2023.

The governors in attendance include Governors Abubakar Bagudu of Kebbi State, Nasir El-Rufai of Kaduna State, Bababjide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos, Abdullahi Ganduje of Kano, Gboyega Oyetola of Osun, Mai Mala Binu of Yobe, Simon Lalong of Plateau, Abubakar Badaru of Jigawa, amongst others.

The meeting came less than 24 hours after Osinbajo hosted the governors at his Aguda House residence on Sunday evening; where he disclosed his intention to run for the APC presidential ticket.

2023: A presidential declaration gone awry as Osinbajo faces attacks from all quarters

    … you’re a complete failure-PDP Reps caucus

    …withdraw now-Joe Igbokwe

    …asTinubu meets with APC Govs

The declaration by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo on Monday has gone awry as he faces attacks from all quarters.

TheNewsGuru.com, (TNG) reports first to declare Osinbajo’s move on Monday to be out of place was an APC chieftain, Joe Igbokwe who quickly advised the veepee to backpedal before it’s late.

Igbokwe in one of his verified handles advised Osinbajo not to contest against his principal and he politely cautioned him to tread softly.

“Let me drop it here for history and posterity: If you are one of the people Asiwaju (Tinubu) raised up and you are eyeing the presidency of the federal republic of Nigeria, show respect and withdraw from the race,” Igbokwe wrote on his known Facebook page.

Osinbajo served 8 years as attorney-general and commissioner for justice in Lagos State when Tinubu was the governor between 1999 and 2007. He was nominated as the running mate to Muhammadu Buhari in December 2014, the then-candidate of the APC for the 2015 presidential election.

But the House of Representatives PDP caucus did not spare him describing his tenure and that of his principal as a complete failure that took Nigeria from top to bottom.

In a statement signed by the caucus leader, Rep Kingsley Chinda demanded to know what Osinbajo wants after the Nigerian economy collapsed under his watch.
Osinbajo’s declaration speech was watery and baseless. First of all, how could he say he is running to “complete the task” that Buhari started? Buhari started extreme poverty and overwhelming security for Nigeria.

“Under Buhari, our country’s debt has grown from ₦12 trillion in 2015, to almost ₦50 trillion this year (if the new ₦6 trillion loan requests are granted. If Osinbajo is running to “complete” that, then he is running to completely destroy what is left of Nigeria!

“Osinbajo said he is running to “provide jobs for millions”. Those were his exact words. The fellow has been in charge of Nigeria’s economy for the last seven years, according to Buhari, who boasted that Osinbajo heads his economic management team . Yet, Nigerians have lost jobs created by other administrations.

“His job record is FAILURE! Nigeria has less jobs now, than in 2015, and our unemployment rate has increased from 12% in 2015, to 33% according to the National Bureau of Statistics.

“Osinbajo said he wants to “birth the expectations of greatness” for Nigeria. Under his leadership of Buhari’s economic management team, Nigeria became the world headquarters for extreme poverty. We do not need Osinbajo’s type of ‘expectation’!

“Osinbajo in his declaration speech said he “remained focused on securing the country”. That is an insult to the intelligence of Nigerians. Under Osinbajo and Buhari, Nigeria became the 3rd most insecure nation on Earth.

” Only Iraq and Afghanistan are worse than us. We just witnessed a train bombing and the abduction of over a hundred Nigerians who are still with terrorists. Over 700 of our soldiers have been killed in the last 18 months. If that is what Osinbajo’s focus produces, then we don’t need it!

” For years, Osinbajo has been posing as an intellectual. So, at the very least, we expected his declaration speech to be filled with his achievements in office. But it was instead filled with promises. Empty promises. Because he and Buhari have no achievements to show for their wasted seven years!

“Osinbajo fooled us with his empty promises in 2015. Now, he is making new promises. Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me. Don’t forget how he was doing Trader Moni during the last elections. Did he not abandon it after he and Buhari rigged themselves to a second term?

Meanwhile, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu met with APC governors immediately after Osinbajo met with them. The battle line has been drawn.

Osinbajo finally decides to run for 2023 presidency

After several months of speculations, Vice President Yemi Osinbajo has finally decided to run for the 2023 presidential election under the ruling party, the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Osinbajo informed APC governors about his bid for the All Progressives Congress (APC) ticket to run for President after the break of fast during Ramadan.

According to TheNation, he told them of his capacity and experience having been Vice President for about seven years.

He said he had consulted widely and that he would inform Nigerians through a declaration today.

He said having informed President Muhammadu Buhari, he felt the governors were the people to inform next, a source close to the meeting said last night.

It was learnt that about 10 APC governors attended the meeting, led by Chair of the Progressives Governors Forum (PGF), Kebbi State Governor Atiku Bagudu.

Some of the governors in attendance include Babajide Sanwo-Olu (Lagos), Dapo Abiodun (Ogun), Adegboyega Oyetola (Osun), Hope Uzodimma (Imo) and Nasir El-Rufai (Kaduna).

Governor Bagudu, who responded on their behalf, it was gathered, said the APC governors were looking forward to the party continuing to hold the levers of power in the country after the 2023 election.

Osinbajo is expected to make the declaration through an online broadcast.

“The video will be circulated across social media handles. The details will be explained in a press statement,” Special Adviser to the President on Political Matters (Office of the Vice President), Mr. Femi Ojudu, said last night.

Former Lagos State Governor Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Ebonyi State Governor Dave Umahi, Senator Rochas Okorocha, Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello and Transportation Minister Rotimi Amaechi have declared their intention to vie for the APC presidential ticket.

Osinbajo charges religious leaders to use faith to promote peace, unity

Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo has charged religious leaders to use faith to promote peace, ensure prosperity for the people as well as development of societies.

His spokesman, Laolu Akande, stated on Sunday in Abuja that Osinbajo gave the charge when he received visiting Senegal-based Grand Khalifa of Tijjaniya Islamic Movement Worldwide, Sheikh Muhammadu Niass.

“We must use our faiths to promote peace and prosperity for our people; we need to work together to ensure that our people benefit from religion.

“We tend to underestimate the importance of religion in spite of the fact that it plays important role in the development of societies in the spiritual and physical realms.

“There are many nations of the world that have benefitted from the impact of religion both spiritually and physically.

“We must, therefore, use religion in our countries and in Africa to help our people to live better lives.

“In other parts of the world, leaders of faith have used religion to better the lives of the people,’’ Osinbajo was quoted as saying.

He stressed that in spite of differences, Africans must be able to sit together and dialogue and avoid situations that create disunity.

“With what is going on across the world, people of faith must continue to emphasise that both major religions (Islam and Christianity) promote peace.

`We must allow our people to practice whatever religion they want to practice,’’ the vice-president charged.

Osinbajo praised the leader of the group, while commending the Tijjaniya Movement for its progressive ideals and compassion for the needs of the people.

The vice-president described President Muhammadu Buhari as a model of leadership that accommodated people of different religious backgrounds, citing his relationship with the president spanning more than seven years as a perfect example.

“President Buhari is a devout Muslim and I am a pastor; both of us have worked together for about seven years; we have not had issues.

“The president has shown great leadership; he has shown that he wants a country where people of different faiths live in harmony and with love for one another,’’ Osinbajo stressed.

Earlier, Niass who spoke in French interpreted by a spokesman thanked the vice-president for the opportunity to meet with him and his delegation.

He described Osinbajo as a great personality, the type needed both in Nigeria and in Africa.

“The vice-president is a great personality with an exceptional character, standing on two feet — one as a political leader concerned about the progress of his people and the second, as a man of God.

“Africa needs a person of your nature with very strong background in religion and politics.

“I pray that Almighty God will upgrade you and enable you to achieve your desires and aspirations because, as I said, not only Nigeria, but Africa will benefit from your leadership qualities,’’ he said.

According to Niass, Nigeria is the heart of Africa and whatever Nigeria becomes, Africa becomes.

Niass also expressed the group’s gratitude to President Buhari for his support, while praying for his safety and for Nigeria to overcome all its challenges.

The vice-president later promised to convey the Sheik’s warm greetings and appreciation to President Buhari.

Niass and other members of the Tijjaniya Movement across Africa and worldwide converged on Gusau to celebrate the 36th international Maulud anniversary in honour of the movement’s departed leader Sheikh Ibrahim Niass.

  • Osinbajo pays glowing tribute to Adeboye at 80

Osinbajo pays glowing tribute to Adeboye at 80

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo and wife, Dolapo, have congratulated Pastor Enoch Adeboye, the General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), on his 80th birthday.

Osinbajo’s birthday message to Adeboye was conveyed in a tribute he personally authored on behalf of his wife, Dolapo, on Wednesday in Abuja.

The vice president said that Adeboye had impacted many lives and overseen unprecedented growth of the church; yet the achievements had not affected his behaviour.

“Dolapo and I are honoured to write this tribute to Daddy on his 80th Birthday.

“Very few leaders will ever have the geographical and spiritual reach of influence that Pastor Adeboye has.

“He is neither the Pope nor the leader of the free world, but he heads a denomination that, since his assumption of office as its General Overseer, has established churches in over 198 countries and territories of the world.

“He was, as early as 2008, listed by Newsweek, as one of the 100 most influential people in the world.

“Earlier in 1998, the Holy Ghost Congress of the RCCG in Lekki, Lagos, was reported to be one of the largest Christian gatherings ever, and every year, the RCCG Conventions and

Congresses have live crowds breaking that record. Through the years, miracles of every kind have been commonplace in his ministry.”

According to Osinbajo, the moral of the story is not in these achievements, but in how Adeboye’s behaviour has remained unaffected by them.

“It was Mummy G.O. who said to us once, “see how God uses your father as a smokescreen to do the miracles He wants to do.”

The vice president said that Adeboye realised that apart from God, one could do nothing and that no one could receive anything that was not given to him by God.

“This realisation probably explains why a man so spiritually and intellectually gifted, so revered, so respected by the high and low alike, would still be so genuinely humble, so self-effacing and so unfailingly respectful, even of his subordinates.

“His impeccable integrity, his measured speech and action at all times, his life of many challenges, many wars, his courage, his unshaken faith, his deep love for God, through phenomenal achievements and numbing personal tragedy, are all together the most persuasive evangelical message to all, even those of other faiths, of the grace and mercy of God
in the life of the Saved.

“For us, we are extremely proud that this man of extraordinary faith, courage and humility is one we can call our daddy.

“Daddy, Happy 80th Birthday! As your days, so shall your strength, wisdom and favour with God in Jesus’ name. Amen,” he said.

  • 2023 Elections : We will Prevail on Osinbajo to contest – Citizens Unite

2023 Elections : We will Prevail on Osinbajo to contest – Citizens Unite

Citizens Unite, a pressure group, was yesterday inaugurated in Lagos to pressurise Vice President Yemi Osinbajo to join the 2023 presidential race.

Leader of the group and convener of the event, Dr Maryam Shettima, said Nigeria needed thoroughbred professionals, academics, intellectuals, loyal politicians and emphatic citizens at the helm of its national affairs.

She said Osinbajo met all the criteria required in a leader that would govern Nigeria in 2023, hence the reason the group was urging him to contest.

She noted that they would not stop pressurising him until he declared his intention.

Shettima said, “We believe that Osinbajo has what it takes to usher Nigeria into a new age. We will continue to pressurise him to declare his intention to run.

“At Citizen’s Unite, we concern ourselves with the strategic and intellectual bits of national politics.”

Shettima observed that working as a physiotherapist at the State House Clinic in 2012- 2013, she had the privilege of coming across various people in leadership positions and that the vice president stood out in humility, charisma and was approachable.

“Not only is the vice president a visionary professional technocrat, he is God fearing, quick to act, bridge builder, compassionate, down to earth family man with street credibility just as we witnessed with the Trader Moni and even more in his visit to Borno on Friday,” she said.

  • Osinbajo discusses climate change, coups d’etat, others in Tanzania

Osinbajo discusses climate change, coups d’etat, others in Tanzania

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo and his Tanzanian counterpart, Philip Mpango, on Sunday, in Arusha, Tanzania, held bilateral talks.

The two spoke on issues ranging from climate change and technology to deterring unconstitutional changes of government in Africa.

Osinbajo is in Tanzania to speak at inaugural session of the African Court of Human and Peoples’ Rights for the year 2022 scheduled for Feb. 28.

They also discussed issues of interest to both Nigeria and Tanzania, including infrastructure development, trade and investment, technology, climate change and democracy.

According to Osinbajo, ECOWAS has experienced in just under a year, four coups d’etat including attempts.

He said that it was disturbing because such things ought to have been put behind the region.

“It is something that we think has to do with more cooperation. AU has been very forthcoming (in condemnation) in saying that we cannot tolerate unconstitutional seizures of power.

“But sanctioning these coupists without any proper “teeth” has not been particularly effective.

“There might be a need for us to reach out to some of the regional bodies, development financial institutions such as the World Bank, IMF, and the EU.

” The EU has been quite responsive but we think that we can do a lot more just in terms of cooperation, so there is an effective deterrent if everyone agrees that undemocratic change of government is unacceptable.”

On climate change and the attendant goal of net-zero emissions, Osinbajo said the major challenge was that the wealthier countries were abandoning fossil fuels and gas and some of them were already defunding gas projects.

He said it was important to keep focus on the transition to net-zero emissions, but also important for the world to know that Africa had two challenges – Climate Change and development.

“We in Africa will run into trouble because gas projects are important even for the transition.

“It is important for us to come together to oppose any situation where the wealthier countries insist that on account of going towards net-zero emissions in 2050, we should then abandon gas which is one of the major sources of energy for industry and clean cooking.

” We think that the wealthier countries are asking us to do what they didn’t do – use renewable energy for industry.

“While we are interested in ensuring that we meet net-zero emissions target, we are also interested in ensuring that we develop.”

On the place of technology in economic growth, Osinbajo said that growth would be technology-led, adding that from 2016, six Nigerian companies had become UNICORNS – companies worth over a billion dollars.

“All these companies started in 2016, including Flutterwave which was recently valued at over 3billion dollars.

“Technology is very important to us and we have investments in broadband infrastructure across the country and consider it to be fundamental to our economic growth.

“Even with what we have done, it is incredible how many new businesses in technology have come up, startups springing up every day.

” It is an exciting time for us, especially for those investing in technology startups across all sectors – education, health, and FinTech.

“There is also financial inclusion because there were many parts of the country that banks didn’t bother to go to, but with technology, we are able to reach all of those places,” he said.

On his part, Mpango commended West African leaders for their efforts to halt the menace of coups d’etat in the sub-region and also agreed that Africa can achieve more working in unison.

He said that climate change was an example of one area leaders on the continent needed to work together to address.

“The apparent wish by developed countries to abandon fossil fuel is worrisome because we are still struggling to provide the basics.

” Our forests are disappearing because our people are still forced to use firewood for cooking, if we abandon gas energy, where do we go to?”

The Tanzanian vice president thanked Osinbajo for accepting the invitation of the African Court to be the guest speaker at the formal opening of the Court’s 2022 Judicial Year.

Both leaders also agreed that the relationship between their countries had been notable over the years, adding however, that there was room for more improvement.

The two leaders agreed that arrangements for the Joint Commission between both countries should proceed.

Mpango recalled Nigeria’s role in the fight to end apartheid in Southern Africa.

“Nigeria never abandoned her brothers and sisters in South Africa.

He added that both countries have been working together and supporting each other internationally since 1962 including at the United Nations and in Africa.

Osinbajo to address African Court in Arusha, Tanzania

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo will depart Abuja on Sunday for Arusha, Tanzania, to attend the formal opening of the 2022 Judicial Year of the African Court for Human and Peoples’ Rights.

Osinbajo’s Spokesman Laolu Akande, in a statement, said the vice president had been designated as the guest speaker at the inaugural event to be attended by leaders from across the continent and beyond.

In 2021, at its 15th anniversary, the court resolved it would convene a solemn ceremony at the commencement of the first of its four sessions of each year to mark the official opening of the judicial year.

The ceremony will be a means of enhancing the court’s visibility and engaging as many stakeholders as possible.

Osinbajo will speak on the theme “The African Court and the Africa we want.”

The overall objective of the ceremony, according to the court, is to provide a forum for interaction with member states, key judicial authorities, inter-governmental, semi-governmental and non-state actors; exchange of ideas; and reflection on the work of the court for the year.

“Eventually, the event will expectedly spur an enhanced understanding by stakeholders of the work of the court, and an increased interaction with key judicial authorities on the continent and key stakeholders,” the statement said.

The African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights was established pursuant to the Protocol to the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights on the establishment of an African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights, adopted in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso on June 9, 1998.

The protocol came into force on Jan. 25 2004.

The court became operational in 2006 and officially started working in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, and later moved to its current seat in Arusha, Tanzania.

The mission of the court is to enhance the protective mandate of the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights by strengthening the human rights protection system in Africa.

The court will ensure respect for and compliance with the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights, as well as other international human rights instruments, through judicial decisions.

The court is made up of justices drawn from the continent by election and is currently led by Lady Justice Imani Aboud, as its President. She is from Tanzania.

Others include Justice Blaise Tchikaya, Vice President, Republic of Congo, Justice Ben Kioko, Kenya, Justice Rafaâ Achour, Tunisia, Lady Justice Ntyam Mengue, Cameroon and Lady Justice Marie Thérèse Mukamulisa, Rwanda.

Lady Justice Tujilane Chizumila, Malawi, Lady Justice Bensaoula Chafika, Algeria, Lady Justice Stella Anukam -Nigeria, Justice Dumisa Ntsebeza, South Africa and Justice Sacko Modibo, Mali will also be in attendance.

While in Tanzania, the vice president will also hold bilateral talks with his counterpart, Dr Philip Mpango.

Osinbajo is expected back in Abuja on March 1.
