FG to generate $16.4bn through sale of assets

The Federal Government plans to generate up to $16.4 billion through asset sales in the next four years to reduce the burden on the nation’s budget.

A document obtained by Bloomberg from the Ministry of National Planning, which outlines the country’s plans for economic recovery from 2017 to 2020, revealed that the sales was to help tackle inefficiencies and stem “corruption in public enterprises”, though assets to be sold were, however, not named.

It was gathered that President Muhammadu Buhari will introduce the proposal later this month.

Nigeria estimates its economy contracted 1.5 percent in 2016, partly because of a decline in the price and output of oil, the country’s biggest export and revenue generator.

The Federal Government proposed a 20 percent increase in this year’s budget to stimulate the economy and help gross domestic product expand by an average of 4.7 percent annually over four years and reach 7 percent in 2020.

Pabina Yinkere, Head of Research at Vetiva Capital Management Ltd., told Bloomberg: “They could look at reducing government stakes in oil joint ventures from around 55 percent to 40 percent or 45 percent.

‘’That alone can generate over $10 billion. Non-oil assets like concession of airports are a more difficult sale because they would involve a lot of transactions.”

The government targets oil production of 2.5 million barrels a day by 2020 to boost export earnings, it said in the document.

Output declined to an almost three-decade low of 1.4 million barrels per day in August after militants in the Niger Delta bombed pipelines to demand more benefits from the resource.

Overall, the Federal Government is said to have developed 59 strategies for implementation to achieve the strategic objectives of the Economic Recovery Growth Plan that will be launched in the next few weeks.

The document, which is awaiting Federal Executive Council’s endorsement, has twelve strategies that have been prioritised based on their importance to the success of the government recovery plan.

Those working on the document said the plan would accelerate non-oil revenue generation through expanding the tax base, blocking leakages in tax avoidance and non-payment.

The plan is expected to drastically cut cost and align monetary and fiscal policies. The government also during the plan period, will spend heavily to expand critical infrastructure, especially power, roads and rail.

Another strategy in the recovery plan is government’s intention to revamp the four existing refineries to ensure local supply of petroleum products in order to conserve foreign exchange.

It is also stated in the document, government’s intention to expand its social investment and deliver on agricultural transformation.

Dialogue with Niger Delta youths, Itsekiri chief urges Osinbajo

Mr Clement Maleghemi, the Udefi Oba Oloye of Warri Kingdom in Delta, has appealed to Acting President Yemi Osinbajo to fulfill his promises of meeting with the Niger Delta youths.

Maleghemi made the appeal on Saturday while speaking with newsmen in Warri on the significance of the “Udefi Day” celebration.

He said that the recent fact-finding visit of the vice president to Delta was an indication that the Federal Government was listening to the yearning of the people in the Niger Delta region.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the vice president had on Jan. 16 promised to meet with the youths in the Niger Delta to enable them express their feelings and suggest ways to restore peace in the region.

He made the promise when he met with traditional rulers, opinion leaders and other critical stakeholders in Delta at the Petroleum Training Institute (PTI) hall, Effurun, Delta.
“The only one visit of the vice president is not enough to solve the problems of the region; but it is an encouragement to know that government is listening to our demands.

“The last time the vice president came, he promised to summon the youths, create time to meet with them as a follow up in February.

“The Federal Government is exploring every possibility to ensure that peace returns to the Niger Delta region.

“I am confident that with all these moves, peace will definitely return to the region,” he said.

Maleghemi, a business magnate, also commended the Nigerian Armed Forces for effectively checkmating illegal bunkering and other criminal activities in the creeks.

The Itsekiri chief, however, urged the government to create employment opportunities and enabling environment to end hostilities in the region.

Maleghemi, who was conferred with the title: “Udefi” on Oct. 8, 2016 by the Olu of Warri, Ogiame Ikenwoli, said the “Udefi Day” was marked every February 10.

“It is a day that all Udefi descendants from all the 14 towns and villages founded by them in Iwere Kingdom come together at Ugbolokposo, our ancestral home to remember and honour our ancestral father Udefi.

“This day is symbolic because it marks a dramatic departure from the hitherto aged-long practice of only a few people gathering annually on 10th of February to remember our ancestral father,” he said.

What we are doing to reduce high food prices – Osinbajo

Acting President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo has said the Federal Government is working assiduously to bring down the high prices of food in the country.

Osinbajo explained that the skyrocketing prices of food is due to some factors which the incumbent administration has identified and will resolve soon.

Osinbajo explained why prices of food items are high in the country.

The acting president said one of the reasons was lack of accessible roads in rural areas.

This was revealed in a statement by the Senior Special Assistant to the Acting President on Media and Publicity, Laolu Akande.

According to the statement, the meeting, which was presided over by the Ag. President focused on “gaining a full understanding of all factors that contribute to unduly high food prices, especially at urban markets throughout the country.

It also considered the ways and means of urgently ameliorating the situation, particularly by addressing issues of affordability and availability.”

He said, “In particular, it identified some key staple foods and the factors that were most likely driving high food prices in some parts of the country, despite bumper harvests at many farms. Some of the factors identified in this regard include: the poor state of rural infrastructure like roads; multiple revenue collecting points on the highways; and inadequacy of distribution networks-all of which contribute, among other things to high transportation costs.

Against this background, the Task Force felt that government could most usefully intervene by resolving such bottlenecks. It also felt it important to clarify that the assignment of the Task Force is not about government intervening directly in the market for staple foods either though purchases or price fixing.

The Task Force will be coordinating various MDAs and working closely with the private sector to explore ways and means of overcoming some of the supply bottlenecks in the short term, while also reinforcing on-going medium and long-term solutions including improving supplies and providing better storage.

A more technical sub-group of the Task Force is now drawing up a draft plan of action for further consideration.”
