Former President Olusegun Obasanjo’s son, Olujuwon, has pledged to support Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo if he decides to run for the 2023 presidency.

Olujuwon disclosed this during a visit to President Muhammadu Buhari’s Special Adviser on Political Matters, Babafemi Ojudu.

In a Facebook post on Saturday, Ojudu said Olujuwon urged Osinbajo to run for president in 2023.

Ojudu promised to inform Osinbajo of Olujuwon’s call.

According to Ojudu, “Olujuwon Obasanjo, son of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, visited yesterday (Friday).

“He too, like many others, came to register his wish and aspiration that Vice President Yemi Osinbajo throws his hat in the rings for the 2023 contest.

“Smart and brimming with ideas, he promised that if Osinbajo heeds the call of Nigerians he will be willing and ready to volunteer to join the campaign train.

“Thank you, Olu. I will pass your message across.”

There are insinuations that Osinbajo is interested in vying for the office of President in 2023.

Despite these insinuations, the Vice President has been silent on the issue.

Why late Soun of Ogbomoso bagged 2 national honours – Osinbajo

Vice- President Yemi Osinbajo has said that the late Soun of Ogbomoso, Oba Jimoh Oyewumi, bagged two national honours during his lifetime due to his remarkable contributions to Ogbomoso and Nigeria at large.

Osinbajo stated this during a thanksgiving service held in honour of the late traditional ruler at First Baptist Church, Ogbomoso on Sunday.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls that the late Oba Oyewunmi, who was the 20th Soun of Ogbomoso, joined his ancestors on Dec. 12, 2021 at the age of 95.

The vice-president said that the conferment of Commander of the Order of the Niger (CON) and Commander of the Federal Republic (CFR) on the traditional ruler at different times was in recognition of his remarkable contributions to Ogbomoso and Nigeria.

“Having ascended the throne on the Oct. 24, 1973, he delivered four decades and eight years of exceptional and transformational leadership, leaving behind the indelible marks of peace and prosperity.

“It is because he was not just there; he made remarkable contributions to Ogbomoso and Nigeria, for which the nation honoured him twice, first as CON and then as CFR,” he said.

Osinbajo described the late Oba Oyewumi as a thoroughbred leader who dedicated himself to the people of Ogbomoso, for both their social and human capital development.

He further explained how the traditional ruler transformed the ancient town from having three schools upon ascension to the throne in 1973 to more than 150, 40 years after.

Osinbajo also added how the deceased had to terminate his schooling after the passing of his father, moving along to the business of trading.

“When he ascended the throne of his forefathers in 1973, there were only three schools in Ogbomoso. Indeed, he himself did not have it all smooth sailing with education.

“He went after this educational goal so much so that after his 40 years on the throne, the town could count, at least, 150 secondary schools.

“His time certainly brought commendable development to this great and ancient town of Yorubaland. So we can say confidently that the scriptures are fulfilled today,” he said.

Osinbajo said that the late Soun lobbied extensively and enthusiastically to clinch a university of technology for Ogbomoso and it’s taken over fully by Oyo State Government recently.

According to him, the royal father’s desire was not for money but that the people of the town and the state would be educated.

He said that the late Oyewumi worked assiduously to ensure the establishment of law courts, area police command and a station of the then National Electricity Power Authority (NEPA) station in Ogbomoso.

The vice president said that there were so many examples of his efforts to develop the town, recalling how he became the wealthiest African in Jos, as an honest trader.

“It is worthy of note that upon his ascension to the throne of his forefathers, he became the first Soun of Ogbomoso land to wear the beaded crown.

“While he lived in the North, he won the respect of all, including the Sardauna of Sokoto who nicknamed him Ciroma.

“Without any doubt, the Oba’s passing has created a big vacuum among the league of traditional rulers in Nigeria, and this is not just because of his age and almost half a century on the throne,” he said.

2023: Osinbajo deserves the ticket, APC will only collect Tinubu’s money – Babangida

Former Governor of Niger State, Babangida Aliyu, has said that the All Progressives Congress, APC, will give its presidential ticket for the 2023 general elections to the Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo.

Speaking on Tuesday at the ongoing 2022 annual lecture of the Sir Ahmadu Bello Memorial Foundation in Kano State, the former governor while referring to the National Leader of the APC, Bola Tinubu, said the party will only be interested in his (Tinubu) money.

According to Aliyu, any “riff-raff or moneybags” will not get to the highest office in the country, even if they bring out money.

“No matter how much money he has, let him bring the money and we will collect it, Mr. Vice President, wherever you go, we will follow,”

He described Osinbajo, who is yet to declare interest in the presidential race as the best candidate for the ruling party saying, “Mr Vice President, do you know you are the best candidate in your party?”

He stressed that Osinbajo has the acceptance of most Nigerians regardless of tribe, religion and political party.

Ernest Shonekan: We are extremely proud of what he has done- Osinbajo

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo says the death of Chief Ernest Shonekan is a major loss to the country, private sector and the international community.

Osinbajo, who was accompanied by his wife, Dolapo, spoke with newsmen after a condolence visit to the family of the late Shonekan on Sunday in Ikoyi, Lagos.

Shonekan died in Lagos on Jan. 11 at the age of 85; he was a statesman, who served as the Head of Interim National Government from Aug. 26, 1993, to Nov. 17, 1993.

The vice president was received by Shonekan’s widow, Margaret and son, Adeboye.

“I think that it’s a very major loss for the country, for the private sector and even internationally.

“Here was a man who made an impact; he was one of the first leaders in the private sector to begin to shape economic policy in Nigeria.

“His role in that aspect was significant; of course, many of us know that at various times his interventions in many ways defined the way our economic policy was framed or our economic policy was thrown up.’’

Osinbajo said that late Shonekan was very consequential as a leader in the private sector.

“Of course, there is no question at all about the role he played at the very tension filled and uncertain time in the life of the nation, especially as head of the Interim National Government.

“ I think that when you look at his role from the private sector to statesman, there is no question at all that this was a very unique individual and I believe that his contributions will be evergreen.

“We are extremely proud of what he has done; we are extremely proud of his life and times and we pray that his memory will be blessed forever,’’ Osinbajo said.

The vice president had earlier prayed for the family of the deceased and signed the condolence register.

Part of the vice president’s message in the condolence register reads, “we pray that the Lord will comfort the family and may his memory be blessed forever in Jesus name.’’

ECOWAS, international community will not accept unconstitutional takeovers of government- Osinbajo

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo says there is a strong resolve by the ECOWAS and the international community not to accept coups d’etat or any other form of unconstitutional change of government.

Osinbajo spoke with newsmen on Sunday in Accra after participating at an Extraordinary Summit of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government.

The extraordinary meeting, in which the vice president represented President Muhammadu Buhari, was to discuss the political situation in the Republic of Mali.

Osinbajo said that ECOWAS had not lost its bite as it was concerned about issues of good governance and democratic enterprise in the ECOWAS region.

He said this is the sanction against Guinea and of course, what is proposed against Mali.

“So, I think what is being done is unprecedented; in the years gone by, African Union, then known as Organisation of African Unity, never came down heavily on coup d’etat.

“But it is evident now; there is very strong resolve that the ECOWAS, and indeed the international community, will not accept unconstitutional takeovers of government in the form of coup d’etat and other such unconstitutional means of taking over governments.

“So, it is very evident that there is a very strong resolve which is why we are here today,’’ Osinbajo said.

He expressed optimism that the efforts being made to resolve the situation in Mali would yield a positive result.

  • Violating electorates’ right of choice endangers our democracy – Osinbajo

Violating electorates’ right of choice endangers our democracy – Osinbajo

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo (SAN) has said that democracy remains the best system of establishing governments because it guarantees respect for the fundamental rights of individuals to choose their leaders.

Prof. Osinbajo stated this on Thursday in Ibadan, Oyo State capital where he chaired a roundtable discussion, which was held in honour of the late governor of the state, Senator Abiola Ajimobi, and in commemoration of his posthumous 72nd birthday.

Speaking on the theme of the Roundtable, Election Security and Good Governance in Nigeria, the VP noted that democracy as a “ system of governance guarantees the accountability of the elected to the electorate. As the electorate determine in every electoral cycle by their free choice whether the mandate given was properly utilized.”

Referencing the timeless quote by the late US President Abraham Lincoln in his Gettysburg Address in 1863, Prof. Osinbajo submitted that “man has not yet developed a fairer and more just system of establishing governments than that the government be a government of the people by the people for the people.”

“This right of choice of leaders as given by democracy is not just a fundamental civil and political right, but it also separates man from animals for whom might confers the right to leadership,” he added.

He said, “the major issue, therefore, is how to ensure that right of free choice is not defeated or corrupted. Once that right of free choice is violated, the basis of democracy and its product, good governance, is undermined.

“I am sure some of the conversation today will look at this fundamental point…how can we protect the vote, how do we ensure that every vote counts; how do we protect the government of the people, by the people, and for the people; and ensure, as Lincoln famously prayed at Gettysburg, that it does not perish from the earth?”

Prof. Osinbajo described the late governor Ajimobi as “an exceptional communicator and a natural bridge builder, who attained early success in the oil and gas industry, and then emerged as an astute politician, Senator of the Federal Republic, and two-term governor of Oyo State.”

The VP added that the late Senator Abiola Ajimobi was “a remarkable human being, an extraordinarily gifted man, astute politician, accomplished public intellectual and administrator in his own right.”

The Vice President also commissioned the Senator Abiola Ajimobi Resource Center built by the Senator Abiola Ajimobi Foundation at the Institute for Peace and Strategic Studies (IPSS), University of Ibadan, Oyo State.

The former Chairman of Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Professor Attahiru Jega, was the lead speaker, among other distinguished panels of discussants.

Other dignitaries at the event hosted by the late Senator Ajimobi’s wife, Mrs. Florence Ajimobi included the Deputy Governors of Oyo and Osun states: Rauf Olaniyan and Benedict Gboyega Alabi; Minister of Sports and Youth Development Sunday Dare, traditional rulers, and top government officials.

  • How Late Justice Babalakin confronted Obasanjo to release Lagos LG funds in 2003 – Osinbajo

How Late Justice Babalakin confronted Obasanjo to release Lagos LG funds in 2003 – Osinbajo

The Vice President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, went down memory lane during his condolence visit to the family of the late Justice Bolarinwa Babalakin in Gbogan, Osun State yesterday, recalling the vital efforts he made to get President Olusegun Obasanjo to change his mind when his government withheld the local government funds of Lagos State in 2003.

Osinbajo’s visit to the Babalakin family occurred after he had delivered a speech at the 45th convocation of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) in Ile-Ife, also in Osun State, where he lamented the security situation in the country, especially the rise of terrorism and access to illegal weapons by non-state actors.

Recalling the face-off between the Lagos State Government and the Obasanjo administration over the withheld local government funds at a time Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu held sway as the governor of the state, Osinbajo said: “When I heard about the passing of our father, Babalakin, I called Adewale when he was abroad. I told him that this is not just a loss for him and the family but a great loss for all of us his friend, the legal profession and even the Yoruba race. Baba was so credible.

“I remember in 2003 when we had a problem with Obasanjo in Lagos, he held unto our local government funds and it was after the Supreme Court had given us judgment and he refused to hand over the money.

“We were going back and forth on it, so we were looking for somebody who would be respected by both Obasanjo and ourselves, who we knew would be considered credible by both sides, and everybody agreed that Justice Babalakin would be the right person. He advised that ultimately, we would resolve the issue with a kind of negotiation.

“He spoke very frankly to Obasanjo because later on, we got feedback on how he spoke to him. In the end, we all left having the feeling that we had someone fair, just, frank with all of us.”

He added that Justice Babalakin was respected by the bar and bench, noting that he was trusted and straightforward.

“This is a big loss for our nation especially at a time when we need credible people who can negotiate a lot of the problems and issues that are confronting us as a nation,” he said.
