  • Pandemonium in Osogbo as Aregbesola security officers shoot sporadically

Pandemonium in Osogbo as Aregbesola security officers shoot sporadically

Residents and passersby around Fagbewesa, Orisumbare, Oke Fia and MDS areas of Osogbo, on Monday, ran in different directions as heavy shooting from security men attached to the Interior Minister, Rauf Aregbesola, rented the air.

It was gathered that Aregbesola’s convoy was coming from Station Road end of Osogbo and headed to Oke Fia area, around 6:40pm when the incident, which lasted about 10 minutes, happened.

An aide to Aregbesola, Bola Ilori, in a Facebook post shortly after the incident, said miscreants working for the incumbent Governor, Adegboyega Oyetola, had attacked the former governor but were repelled by security details attached to him.

The post read, “Only a lazy man starts a wrestling match with cutlass and guns – Aregbe. Oyetola thugs fired several gunshots at Aregbesola’s convoy after declaring his preferred choice for Governorship. The attackers were repelled by combined efforts of Police, DSS, NSCDC, etc and luckily no casually was recorded.”

But the Chairman, World Institute for Peace, a non-governmental organisation, Lamina Kamildeen, who claimed to have witnessed the incident, in a Facebook post accused security men attached to Aregbesola of shooting sporadically while passing through Old Garage.

Kamildeen, who claimed to be inside Orisumbare market, when the incident happened wrote, “Shooting sporadically by the security men who were in the company of the former Governor Aregbesola of the State of Osun in Osogbo today is but a misplacement of priority! No matter what, this is a state you have once governed for a two-term tenure.

“Ogbeni needs to know that nothing is sweeter than peace in any given society. Mr. Minister of Interior, you have to apologize to the Osun people for many citizens were injured while running for their lives today. I am not giving any judgment though, but the shooting was huge and caused a lot of panics.”

Meanwhile, the Osun State Government and an aide to the Interior Minister, Bola Ilori, had traded blame over the incident.

The government in a Public Service Announcement signed by the state Commissioner for Information and Civic Orientation, Funke Egbemode, explained that, “misguided cowards have invaded Osogbo, the Osun State capital with armed thugs to foment trouble”.

“These miscreants and their kingpin started shooting as they raced through the town. Their interest is simply to attempt to thwart the peace of the state and create fear in the minds of the good people of Osun counting on a long-lost influence.

“The Government of Osun hereby warns that there are no sacred cows in the state. No one is above the law here regardless of their past glories or future aspirations.

“Security agencies have been well briefed about the activities of these mischief-makers, who have set themselves on a collision course with the law.”

Gunmen attack Aregbesola’s campaign office in Osogbo

Suspected armed thugs on Thursday attacked the campaign office of the Minister of Interior, Rauf Aregbesola, in Osogbo.

A Correspondent of the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), who visited the building, popularly known as “Oranmiyan House”, located along ever busy Gbongan-Ibadan road in Osogbo, reports that empty bullet shells were seen all over the floor.

The wall of the building was also riddled with bullets, while some canopies arranged within the premises were half way burnt.

It was learnt that the suspected thugs, armed with pump action guns, arrived at the building at about 5:30 pm and shot sporadically.

The shooting was said to have caused pandemonium around the ever-busy area, where the building is located.

Road side sellers as well as passers-by were said to have run away in different directions during the shooting spree, which lasted for more than 15 minutes.

According to an eyewitness, the suspected thugs were five in number.

“I was standing at the front of the building when they approach and asked everyone to leave and thereafter started shooting at the building.

“They shattered the windows, the transformer in front of the building and the bullets that passed through the canopies set them on fire,” an eyewitness, who preferred anonymity, said.

It was learnt that one of thugs was arrested by the police.

However, efforts to get the reactions of the Police Public Relation Officers, DSP Yemisi Opalola, proved abortive as calls made to her mobile line were not answered and text messages sent were not responded to.

Meanwhile, the state government has condemned the attack on the building.

A statement signed by the Commissioner for Information and Civic Orientation, Mrs Funke Egbemode, said the Commissioner of Police had been charged to fish out the perpetrators of the attack and bring them before the law.

Egbemode also warned parents and guardians to be more vigilant with their children and wards, to forestall occasions where they become instruments in the hands of trouble makers.

The Commissioner also dissociated the government from any involvement in the attack, saying that it was wicked for anyone to attribute such mischief to a government that had invested heavily in peace in the state.

“The accusation that the government of Mr Adegboyega Oyetola had anything to do with Thursday’s attack on the Oranmiyan House is sad and laughable.

“It defies reasoning that a man who has invested so much in the peace of Osun in the last three years will descend that low.

“This government is united, it has all its ducks in a row.

“The Party is also united and its status and activities have been ratified by the national secretariat.

“There are no reasons to join issues with anyone, let alone engaging in violent act.

“Those who are grabbing at straws to stay afloat, especially because their rebels’ den has fallen like a pack of cards, should try to fix their fortunes instead of blaming everybody, but themselves, for what has happened to them.

“This government is about making Osun better and about building structures that even the unborn generation can inherit.

“It will not fold its hands while those who have neither focus nor interest in the development of the State, and in building an enduring legacy, try to rubbish what this administration has achieved through the help of God and the support of the good people of Osun.

“The government of Osun State condemns Thursday’s attack on Oranmiyan House, because it is nothing close to what we represent as a people.

“Those involved in the attack on Oranmiyan House will be fished out and be made to face the full wrath of the law.

“The governor has charged the Commissioner of Police to fish out the perpetrators of the attack, and charge them to court immediately.

“This administration will not quit its drive to rid the State of the few criminal elements that are causing troubles around.

“The government warns that this is a political season and as we approach the primaries and eventual election, parents and guardians are advised to keep an eye on their wards because nobody caught in any act of criminality will be spared,” she said.

The Police Command in Osun has arrested four persons with guns at the venue of the South-West People’s Democratic Party (PDP) Zonal Congress in Osogbo.

The Command Spokesperson, SP Yemisi Opalola, told newsmen that the suspects were arrested Sunday evening with two loaded pump action rifles.

Opalola said that the suspects were undergoing investigation at the State Criminal Investigation Department (CID) in Osogbo.

She also added that two suspected cult members, who were part of a gang disrupting the peace of the state and had been on police wanted list, were arrested on Sunday.

The command’s spokesperson said the arrested cult members were part of those that caused mayhem in the state some weeks ago when two rival cult members were killed in bloody supremacy battle in Osogbo.

Opalola, however, said the suspects would soon be charged to court upon conclusion of investigation.

The PDP South-West Congress earlier scheduled for April 10 in Ibadan, was shifted to April 12, in Osun, by the party’s National Working Committee.

  • Robbers invade six churches in Osogbo, cart away mixers, amplifiers, others

Robbers invade six churches in Osogbo, cart away mixers, amplifiers, others

No fewer than six churches in Osogbo, Osun State were recently invaded by armed robbers who carted away a multimillion Naira public address system.

The men of the underworld were said to have stole Mixers and Slave Engine Amplifiers at the affected churches which include Methodist Church, Isale-Aro; Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion), Bishop’s Court, Jaleyemi; Catholic Church, Popo; Christ Apostolic Church (CAC), Isale-Aro; and Anglican Church, Balogun-Agoro.

A member of one of the affected churches who spoke under condition of anonymity, said it was unfortunate that the robbers chose to target the House of God to carry out their nefarious activities.

Narrating the development, the source said: “We woke up on the fateful day to discover that about six churches have been robbed by the criminal elements who invaded the said churches.

“At Methodist Church, Isale-Aro, the robbers broke three security doors to access the church building after which they carted away one big Mixer worth about N600,000 and three Slave Engine Amplifiers worth N80,000 each.

“The robbers also stole similar sets of public address equipment at Anglican Church, Balogun-Agoro; Catholic Church, Popo; Christ Apostolic Church, Isale-Aro; Anglican Church, Bishop’s Court and another Christ Apostolic Church around Old Secretariat axis.”

Another church member said the matter had already been reported at Police Station, Oja-Oba, while the police officers immediately swung into action.

“We have lost equipment worth millions of naira. After we reported the matter at Oja-Oba Police Station, police officers came to our church to make some findings. As a matter of fact, Anglican Church is the worst hit as the robbers stole several items there.

“The police officers came and asked some questions about who we suspected could be responsible, but added that for them to go further with investigation, especially to trace the fingerprint of where the robbers touched will cost the church money.

“So, the church had to abandon pressing ahead with the investigation since it will cost us money. We have resolved to leave the matter to God and pray that the robbers will have no peace in their lives until they return the stolen items.

“These are public address items that we use during our services and it is unfortunate that the robbers targeted worship centres and God’s sanctuary to perpetrate their evil trade,” he said.

When contacted, Public Relations Officer of Osun State Police Command, Mrs Yemisi Opalola clarified that the money requested for fingerprint investigation was not an extortion, but that it has to be paid where the investigation would be carried out.

“It is not the investigating police team that is responsible for the fingerprint test. They will have to take it to the State CID (Criminal Investigation Department) and they don’t do it free there. It is not the police that will pay for what they will use for the fingerprint test and that was why they told them to fund the investigation.

“The investigating team can as well tell the victims to go and conduct the fingerprint test in Alagbon, Lagos, and so it is not as if they are being extorted,” she said.

The activists took off from Freedom Park, Osogbo around 8:30 am.

The protesters displayed placards showing their anger over the increase in electricity tariff and petrol price.

The protesters lamented that “approval of new electricity tariff and increment in the pump price of petrol is the highest level of thoughtlessness and wickedness from President Muhammad Buhari-led All Progressives Congress government.”

Petrol prices have increased for three straight months, rising from N121.50–N123.50 per litre in June to N140.80-N143.80 in July, N148-N150 in August and N158-N162 in September.

TheNewsGuru recalls that the Petroleum Products Marketing Company, a subsidiary of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation had, on Wednesday, increased the ex-depot price of Premium Motor Spirit (petrol) to N151.56 per litre from N138.62 per litre but later reduced it to N147.67.

The ex-depot price is the price at which the product is sold to marketers at the depots.

  • Police arrest two for beheading rice dealer in Osogbo

Police arrest two for beheading rice dealer in Osogbo

The police command in Osun says it has arrested two suspects over alleged robbery and killing of a rice dealer by beheading him.

The State Commissioner of Police, Mr Fimihan Adeoye, made this known while parading the suspects and other crime suspects at the Police Headquarters on Thursday in Osogbo.

Adeoye said the arrested suspects were contracted to kill one Isiaka Sanusi, a 43-year-old businessman, on May 14, 2018, at about 9 pm, along Iwo Road, Osogbo.

He said one Yekini Ayinde, also known as ‘Abija’, (a principal suspect still at large) had contacted the deceased to supply him 500 bags of rice.

He said the deceased was lured into making the supply in Osogbo, from Saki in Oyo State, lodged in an hotel after the goods were supplied and later taken out to be killed.

He said Ayinde contracted the arrested suspects, Dauda Amusat, known as Adasi and Pariola Kabiru, with five others, to kill the businessman after collecting the money initially paid to him for the supply.

He said Amusat and his gang killed the victim by cutting off his head, and later confessed how four members of the gang took away the head for ritual purpose.

Adeoye said three of the seven-man gang had earlier been arrested and charged to court, and that the newly arrested suspects would equally be charged after completion of investigation.

He said the principal suspect in the case, Ayinde, was however still at large, but promised that the command would do the needful to ensure his arrest.

The police boss also announced the arrest of two suspected cultists of the Eye Confraternity over their involvement in secret cult activities and killings at Osun State Polytechnic, Iree.

Adeoye said all the suspects would be charged to court after the police had concluded their investigations.

The commissioners appealed to residents of the state to report and shun all acts and forms of criminality, advising the youths to embrace hard work as there was no short cut to getting rich.
