Osun 2022: APC importing armed thugs to disrupt election – PDP

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Osun state chapter has alleged that the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has hired thugs from all over to disrupt the forthcoming July 16th, 2022, governorship elections in the state.

The Osun PDP further reveals that the information at its disposal indicates that the armed thugs have been imported to various parts of the state to disrupt the peaceful conduct of the poll.

In a press statement signed by Akindele Adekunle, the Osun PDP Chairman, Caretaker Transition Committee, and made available to pressmen on Monday, he disclosed that the thugs imported from Lagos were already lodged in various hotels in the State and another very close to the Governor’s office in Abere.

According to the statement, “We have reports that such daredevil hands have been deployed to various zones, including Iwo zone where a PDP party agent was shot at and Osogbo axis where the residence of the governorship candidate of Labour Party was attacked.

“The increasing number of attacks and the unchecked activities of thugs across the State poses a danger to the peaceful conduct of Saturday elections.”

The party called on the Osun Commissioner of Police Election, Julius Alawari Okoro, and DIG Johnson Babatunde Kokumo to urgently act to arrest the situation, adding that the security agents should not wait until the citizens resort to self-help before the menace of the thugs was nipped in the bud.

While calling on the electorates and well-meaning stakeholders to reject violence and intimidation, the party warned that the authorities should be held responsible for any breakdown of law and order.

Reacting, Sunday Akere, spokesperson, Osun APC gubernatorial campaign council described the allegation as laughable, stating that it was proof that the Osun PDP was anticipating failure at the polls.

“APC is not known for violence. Rather, it is renowned for organizing proper elections and wooing residents to come out en masse to vote for its candidate, Governor Adegboyega Oyetola, and does not engage in frivolities like engaging in thuggery,” he said.

Akere explained that the party was more focused on winning the Saturday election through mobilization of the electorates and was not ready to engage the PDP in a mud fight.

Osun Guber: Court affirms Adeleke as PDP authentic candidate

A Federal High Court, sitting in Osogbo, on Wednesday affirmed Sen. Ademola Adeleke of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as the authentic candidate of the party in the forthcoming July 16 governorship election in the state.

Justice Nathaniel Ayo-Emmanuel, in his judgment, which lasted for more than 1 hour, 30 minutes, held that the primary election conducted at the WOCDIF Centre, Osogbo, on March 8, which produced Dotun Babayemi, was null and void.

Thenewsguru.com reports that PDP during its governorship primary elections on March 8, had held parallel primaries in the state.

Ayo-Emmanuel, who cited Section 84 (14) of the Electoral Act, after a thorough proceeding and counterarguments by both counsels, dismissed the suit filed by Babayemi.

He said it was only the aspirant(s) that participated physically at the primary conducted by the PDP National Working Committee and not the one conducted by the party’s state executives that have power and locus standing to challenge such suit in court.

The judge upheld the governorship primary conducted by the PDP National Working Executive Committee at the Osogbo Township Stadium that produced Adeleke.

He said the claims of the plaintiff lacked locus standi, because he did not take part in the National Working Executive Committee primary election organised by his party on March 8, which was supervised by the Deputy Governor of Bayelsa, Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo.

In one of the primaries held at the Osogbo City Stadium, under the supervision of the Deputy Governor of Bayelsa, Mr Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, as Chairman, Sen. Ademola Adeleke was declared the winner.

However, in another primary held at the Women and Children Development Initiative Foundation (WOCDIF) Centre, Osogbo, Mr Dotun Babayemi, was declared the winner.

In a list of candidates later released by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Adeleke’s was recognised.

Babayemi, however, approached the court challenging the nomination and submission of Adeleke by the PDP to INEC.

He is also challenging the validity of the governorship primaries conducted at the stadium against the one held at WOCDIF.

Babayemi, after the court session, told newsmen that the matter was a “family affair”.

He said his legal and political team would review the judgment in the best interest of the state.

Babayemi added that his decision on the judgment would be in the best interest of the state.

Osun Guber 2022: Adeleke, Babayemi in reconciliation meeting

Ahead of the July 16 gubernatorial election in Osun state Dotun Babayemi, the factional gubernatorial candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has settled his rift with Senator Ademola Adeleke.

TheNewsGuru.com recalls that INEC released the names of party’s guber contestants and it picked Ademola Adeleke as PDP’s party bearer in the state.

This didn’t sit down well with Dotun Babayemi who filed a case in court challenging the candidature of Senator Ademola Adeleke.

In a statement made available by Olawale Rasheed on behalf of Senator Adeleke after the peace meeting held on Sunday, it was revealed that the move was in line with Adeleke’s philosophy of brotherhood and partnership for all in the interest of the Osun people.

The meeting which was brokered by the national leadership of the party, was aimed at seeking a united front for the PDP to ensure a landslide victoryat the polls.

Adeleke who declared that he was in support of inclusive efforts geared towards electoral victory for the party stressed that defeating the APC was the most important task before all the party leaders.

In his words, “I support an all-inclusive effort towards electoral victory.

“To this end, I welcome my colleagues who may be aggrieved for one reason or the other. As I always reiterated, we are not enemies but the same political family with a common political enemy. Defeating the APC is therefore the most important task before all leaders of PDP for now.

“As our national chairman always noted, Osun is a gateway to PDP victory at 2023. Our victory in Osun is the much-needed energy for the party to win national elections. We are therefore calling on all our leaders to forget the bickering of the past and join hands to record success in July.”

Meanwhile, Kayode Oladeji, the Media Director for the Babayemi Campaign Organisation disclosed that the meeting had nothing to do with the disagreement over the gubernatorial primary of the party.

But when contacted for more clarification on the meeting, the Director of Media, Omooba Dotun Babayemi Campaign Organisation, Kayode Oladeji, said the meeting had nothing to do with the disagreement over the governorship primary of the party.

Oladeji posited that the meeting was for the party to work in unison inorder to get a favourable result at the polls.

According to him, “The committee met with the two factions over the forthcoming presidential primary.

“There is a delegate election coming up on Wednesday, Friday and Saturday for the presidential primary. The meeting agreed on the national delegates. The two groups divided the Osun slots, instead of going for primary they have both agreed.

He denied that his principal had stepped down, adding that the court will decide in due course who the authentic flag bearer would be.

Despite INEC recognition of Adeleke, Dotun Bayemi still lay claim to be the authentic winner of the PDP’s ticket

Also, Adeleke despite the INEC recognition has been facing court suits instituted to challenge his candidature.

However, the court will give its verdict before the July 16th gubernatorial election in Osun state.

I will get back my stolen ticket – PDP factional candidate, Babayemi

Dotun Babayemi, a gubernatorial aspirant of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) primary election in Osun State who emerged under a factional group has mentioned that he’s not disturbed that National Electoral Commission (INEC) omitted his name on the list of party flag bearers.

Recall that INEC recently released names of participating parties and their flag bearers in the forthcoming Osun guber election coming up on July 16th

Babayemi, while maintaining that he has unshakable faith in the ongoing legal process, also assured that the will of the people would prevail and he would be vindicated at the end of the day.

In a statement released by Babayemi’s camp and signed by media director Kayode Oladeji declared that he is pursuing a legal cause.

He noted that the list released was a product of a calendar of a defined process, which could not be termed final.

He added that by INEC’s timetable, June 16, 2022, is the last day for publication of the final list of nominated candidates by the Commission.

He explained that, “There is nothing final about the list and I am sure that somebody somewhere knows that. It is only the uninformed that can think it is the end of the process, because it is on INEC’s timetable; the list published is just the submission by various parties.

“Fortunately, there is a window of opportunity provided by the new Electoral Act and that is what we are exploring because we believe in the rule of law. Everything you are seeing are tailor-made processes which are amenable to changes when the need arises on account of judicial pronouncements.”

Babayemi noted that INEC as an agency of government respects the rule of law and would act accordingly when the court makes its pronouncements on the issues at hand.

He appealed to the PDP members in Osun state to remain calm and resolute assuring them that justice would be served and his stolen party ticket would be restored.

INEC listed Ademola Adeleke as the PDP flag bearer on the list for the July 16 Osun state guber election.
