Osun 2026: Plaudits for Oyetola for dropping ambition – By Ehichioya Ezomon

Holding political office, whether elective or appointive, has become the shortest route to power, wealth and fame in Nigeria. That’s why politicians can do anything – legal and illegal – to secure the ticket or the means to get into office. Nothing – absolutely nothing – is spared in this endeavour, including committing the most heinous of crimes: murder.

Speculations abound that politicians use their children, siblings, parents, friends, associates or any unfortunate strangers for “sacrifice” to enhance their chances at elections or appointments, or become and retain power as “political godfathers” who majorly sponsor  officeseekers.

You’re on your own trying to frustrate a politician’s efforts to get into office, as you could pay dearly for it via physical elimination by hired thugs, food or drink poisoning, or spiritual attack by mediums of varying faiths found in the nooks and cranies of Nigeria.

Politicians consult prophets, alfas, marabouts and babalawos to foretell their chances for political offices. And trust the sorcerers; they divinate whatever that’ll please their clients to part with millions of Naira, and a promise for more “rewards” if the predictions come true.

Recall allegations and reports in the early part of the Fourth Republic (which began in 1999) about politicians going or being taken to the (in)famous “Okijia Shrine” in Anambra State, to swear to oath of allegiance, to cede some “juicy portfolios” in the cabinet, and a percentage of internally-generated revenue by the government to their godfathers.

There’s a sensational report about a governor, who – due to mounting pressures over alleged financial impropriety, and on the reported divination of a prophet – burned N8m cash by a riverside, where he’s stark-naked and bathed with “spiritual soap” “to ward-off opposition to his position.

Repeated failed attempts at the poll don’t deter or dissuade politicians from holding on for years predictions for their success at elections – with their sorcerers continuing to renew their hopes and faith for a luckier next time. This partly accounts for politicians’ nomadic movements (defections) across several parties to get elected or retain their positions.

For the 2027 General Election, defections and realignments are daily occurrences, with dormant members and those who’ve long left or were expelled from political parties organising press conferences to contrive defections anew – all in attempts to position themselves for elective or appointive offices in the next election cycle.

Some politicians, who’ve contested for the same positions many times, still hold themselves out as “divinely anointed” and ready to throw, under the bus, any supporters and spokespersons who may suggest that they’re not “desperate” for the offices.

One of the opposition leaders angling for the presidential contest in 2027 did just that lately, declaring that one of his mouthpieces didn’t get his permission to claim that “he’s not desperate to be President,” and reaffirmed his determination to vie for the office.

In the circumstances, why would former Osun State Governor and Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Chief Adegboyega Oyetola, pass up the 2026 Osun governorship for other aspirants of All Progressives Congress (APC)? Well, for whatever reason for the decision, I salute his exemplary display of leadership, courage, and selflessness, which calls for emulation by the political class.

Elected governor in 2018 on the platform of the APC, succeeding Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola (2010-2018), who later served as Minister of Interior (2019-2023), Oyetola lost his re-election bid in 2022 to Mr Ademola Adeleke of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Despite his cabinet appointment in 2023 in President Bola Tinubu’s administration, the expectation was that, Oyetola – who’s the privilege of “right of first refusal” (ROFR) for the governorship – would stake for the position in 2026, to prove two points: His claim to’ve won the 2022 poll, which he contested up to the Supreme Court and lost; and his popularity with the Osun voters.

Observers of the high-stakes politics in Osun were already visualising an epic rematch between Oyetola and Adeleke, whose desire to switch camps to the APC was “thwarted” by vehement opposition and protests by APC chieftains, some for their own governorship aspiration, and others reportedly at the behest of Oyetola.

In particular, Oyetola’s expected to prove those points on two grounds. One, in light of claims by Adeleke that barring the setback from his attempts to decamp to APC, and the lingering crisis in the PDP, he remained (and remains) with Osun grassroots because of his “developmental strides” in the past three years in the saddle.

Two, the fact that Oyetola’s estranged “godfather” and predecessor, Aregbesola, who allegedly caused him re-election in 2022, is the Interim National Secretary of African Democratic Congress (ADC), which the Coalition of Opposition Politicians (COP) has adopted to fly its members’ flags in 2027.

What an opportunity for Oyetola to kill three birds at the same time with one stone: Stop Governor Adeleke’s re-election; defeat the governorship candidate of the ADC; and demystify Aregbesola’s touted political influence in Osun!

But on Friday, July 25, 2025, Oyetola surprised the entire Osun political stakeholders, declaring he won’t contest for the 2026 governorship, thus bringing reliefs to the camps of three main parties, the PDP, APC and ADC, and their governorship aspirants, among whom the candidates will emerge during a 21-day primary period from November 24 to December 15, 2025.

Giving a short-and-sharp reason for taking himself off the APC primary and the governorship poll, Oyetola, at a party stakeholder-meeting in Osogbo, the Osun capital city, said the APC has “enough qualified and competent people of outstanding track records” to aspire to the office, adding, “this is a unique selling proposition (for members) to feast on.”

Describing the APC as “strong and able” that won’t spare “any legitimate effort to unseat Governor Adeleke, and return to power,” Oyetola tasked the aspirants to “embrace peace, be each other’s keeper, and avoid a campaign of calumny, bitterness and politics of acrimony,” reports The Nation on July 27, 2025.

While praising the leadership and members for their continuous commitment to the growth and development of the APC since 2022 when he lost the governorship, and giving the assurance of his commitment to lead the party to victory in 2026; Oyetola urged massive mobilisation for the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) and collection of Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs), describing the process as “a prerequisite for victory.”

Oyetola didn’t spare the opposition moves against Osun-born President Tinubu, saying the coalition poses no threat to APC. “It is crystal clear that the coalition is drifting to collapse,” he said, adding, “This has no iota of effect on us, particularly in Osun.”

He remarked snidely that, “We knew this since it is the same TOP that metamorphosed into Omoluabi (two political groups formed by Aregbesola) later ADC. We are resolute to come victorious in the future elections, and this is incontestable.”

Certainly, Oyetola’s dropping his governorship ambition, and his inspiring message to Osun APC members was sweet music to the aspirants at the parley who, notwithstanding their individual ambition, were united in opposition to Governor Adeleke’s desire to defect to APC.

Several of the aspirants at the Osogbo meeting – co-presided by the APC State Chairman, Tajudeen Lawal, and Chairman of the Elders’ Caucus, Chief Sola Akinwumi – include the National Secretary of APC, Sen. Ajibola Basiru; and Managing Director of National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA), Asiwaju Munirudeen Bola Oyebamiji.

Others are the Chairman of Mutual Benefits Assurance Plc, Sen. Jide Omoworare; Prince Dotun Babayemi; Dr Akin Ogunbiyi; Barrister Kunle Adegoke (SAN); Sen. Mudashiru Hussein; and Rafiu Durodoye, a United States-based Professor of Mathematics.

Also in attendance are APC State Secretary, Alhaji Kamorudeen Alao; Treasurer, Hon. Femi Kujembola; former Minister of Health, Prof. Isaac Adewole; Senior Special Assistant to President Tinubu on Protocol, Ambassador Issah Niniola; and former Nigerian Ambassador to Mexico, Adejare Bello.

The rest are current and former members of the National Assembly and Osun State House of Assembly; local government chairmen and councillors; APC state and local government EXCOs; and stakeholders from state to the ward levels.

Even as Oyetola’s out of the governorship race, the Osun APC aspirants still have to contend with Governor Adeleke and Aregbesola, who, along with his COP/ADC members, has vowed to remove from power in 2027 his erstwhile political mentor and godfather, President Tinubu.

The aspirants have a dual responsibility ahead of them: Get the primary right and rally behind the chosen candidate to take over power from Adeleke in 2026; and reverse the 2023 defeat of Tinubu in Osun by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar of then-PDP.

The first task is arduous, considering that Adeleke and the Osun PDP members have tactically adopted Tinubu as their preferred candidate for 2027, giving them the leverage to subtly use that pedestal for blackmail, to stave-off Adeleke’s defeat at the poll in 2026.

Ensuring a win for Tinubu is even trickier if Adeleke – win or lose re-election – wants to play the spoiler by reneging on the Osun PDP declaration of support for Tinubu, and swing votes – as it happened in 2023 – for the PDP or ADC candidate in 2027.

So, Chief Oyetola, the governorship aspirants, and the entire members of the APC in Osun State are in a double fix, from which to extricate themselves in 2026 and 2027, accordingly. Only a united front, as Oyetola’s solicited, will guarantee their expected victories!

The command Spokesman, DSP Abiodun Ojelabi made this known in a statement on Friday in Osogbo.

Ojelabi said the arrest was part of efforts by the Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Gotan to contain cult activities and other vices in the state

Ojelabi said that on Aug.21, about 6:30 p.m., during the student union week in one of the higher institutions in the state, police arrested two suspected cult members, following intelligence report.

“They confessed to be member of Aiye and Buccaneer confraternities (Alora) respectively,” he said.

He said in the same vein, on Aug.19, acting on credible information, the command also arrested some hoodlums suspected to be members of a secret cult terrorizing the residents of Okuku Town and its environs.

“Police detectives from Anti-cultism unit of the command moved swiftly to the town where four suspects were apprehended.

“The suspects confessed to be member of Aiye confraternity,” he said

He said, in another development, the police stormed the hideouts of armed hoodlums suspected to be members of Eiye confraternity, led by one ‘Gafari’, terrorising residents of Gbeja and Oke-Baale Osogbo.

He said the suspects fled upon sighting the security operatives.

He, however, said one cut-to- size single barrel gun; a cut-to-size double barrel gun, five sharp cutlasses, one axe and three lives cartridges were recovered from their hideouts .

Ojelabi said efforts were on to arrest the fleeing hoodlums, adding that all the arrested suspects would be charged to court upon completion of investigation.

He quoted CP Gotan urging the students to focus on their education because the law would not spare anyone caught involved in cultism.

Osun governorship election will be transparent, fair – INEC vows

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) says it will ensure transparency, fairness, and professionalism in the conduct of the Aug.8, 2026 governorship election in Osun.

The INEC Resident Electoral Commissioner in the state, Dr Mutiu Agboke, said this during a stakeholders’ meeting on Wednesday in Osogbo.

“Let me assure you all that INEC shall ensure a credible process in the upcoming 2026 governorship election in the state. Your votes will count.

“We shall do the right thing at all times. We shall ensure we do our best to ensure your vote counts,” he said.

Agboke also said that the notice of the election had been duly pasted in all the local government offices, including the area office in Modakeke.

He said that with the notice, all activities that would culminate in the governorship election in the state had commenced.

“As of July 31, INEC has registered 1,954,800 electorates; 1,594,006 Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) had been collected by the electorate, while 360,794 were yet to be collected.

“Residents of voting age who are yet to register for their PVCs are urged to take advantage of the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR), which will commence on Aug.18,” he said.

Agboke, however, said that a critical examination of the PVC statistics showed that a large number were yet to be collected.

“Concerted efforts are being made with stakeholders to continue creating awareness for the electorate, not just to register but to ensure the collection of the cards. Let me reiterate here that as it stands now, no PVC, no voting,” he said.

He urged youths to shun violence and refuse to be used as agents of destruction, fake news and other electoral malpractices during the election.

Agboke also appealed to political parties and other major stakeholders to shun vote buying and violence during the election.

“Electorate should be educated to eschew vote buying and selling by anyone who may want to trade with their votes.

“It should be noted that both violence, vote buying and selling are punishable under the Electoral Act. We must all shun them. The media should help against this cankerworm.

“Civil societies must not keep silent in any manner. I appeal to you all to rise up and continue to support INEC Osun State to deliver a credible election,” he said.

Agboke also urged the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC) to ensure its members avoid hate speeches during campaign activities.

Representatives of security agencies at the meeting promised to ensure a peaceful atmosphere before, during and after the election.

The Osun Amotekun Corps says one of its operatives allegedly attacked on Saturday by a soldier, has died in the hospital.

Omoyele explained that an Amotekun personnel, Peter Tope, was violent attack at about 5.45p.m, at Ijeda area, Ijebu Jesa, resulting in his death in the earlier hours of Sunday.

“The incident occurred around 5:45 p.m. when a soldier, who was recently recruited into the Nigerian Army, launched an unprovoked assault on the Amotekun operative.

“The soldier, dressed in military camouflage, approached the Amotekun station in Ijebu-Jesa with hostile intent and made some uncomplimentary comments about the Corps.

“What subsequently followed after his comments was that he and his cohorts launched unprovoked attacked on one Amotekun personnel who was coming on his motorcycle.

“They reportedly stopped the Amotekun personnel, knocked him down from his motorcycle, by hitting him with a hard object on the head.

“The attacked on him lasted for about 20 minutes, leaving the Amotekun personnel injured and rolling in the pool of blood,” he said.

Omoyele said the soldier and his accomplices thereafter left the scene on commercial motorcycles.

Omoyele said other operatives of the Corps later evacuated Tope to Wesley Guild Hospital in Ilesa and reported the incident at Divisional Police Headquarters in Ijebu-Jesa.

“Unfortunately, despite efforts to save his life, Officer Peter Samuel Tope succumbed to his injuries early Sunday morning,” he said.

We remain committed to Adeleke, PDP – Osun assembly members

The 25 members of the Osun House of Assembly elected on the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) platform say they remain united, loyal, and fully committed to Gov. Ademola Adeleke and the party.

The Speaker of the assembly, Mr Wale Egbedun, who spoke on behalf of the lawmakers at a news conference on Wednesday in Osogbo, dispelled any speculation on their defection to All Progressives Congress (APC).

According to Egbedun, there is no division, defection, or crisis in this assembly.

“The rumours flying around are simply rumours, and we are not in the business of chasing shadows. We are not for sale. We are not moved by noise or pressure.

“We hold the mandate of our people, and we intend to keep that trust with dignity, loyalty and a clear conscience.

“To the good people of Osun, we say ignore the noise. What you see here is unity. What you see is focus. What you see is commitment,” he said.

Osun 2026: APC will never lose again – Omoworare

Sen. Babajide Omoworare, a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Osun, says the party will never lose the governorship election in the state again.

Omoworare said this on Monday in Osogbo while declaring his intention to contest the Aug. 8, 2026 Osun governorship election.

The chieftain said that the loss of the 2022 governorship election by APC to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) was a mistake that would never repeat itself again.

Omoworare, a former Senior Special Assistant to late ex-President Muhammadu Buhari on National Assembly Matters, said APC did not lose the election because PDP was stronger,

“APC lost the last election due to issues within the party, but those have been resolved. We are on the ground.

“We will run for the next election, and we will win. The party will never lose any election in the state again. I want to be the governor of the state because there is need for an Osun renaissance.

“If I am elected, I will revolutionise the agriculture sector and embark on infrastructural development. Osun has the highest food inflation in the region because rural roads are bad.

“Farmers cannot move their produce, but I will fix that if elected. We need a new era of governance in the state”, he said.

The chieftain also expressed optimism about winning the election, adding that he had never lost an election before.

“I have contested five times. Even when they tried to rig me out, I went to court and won. By God’s grace, I am a five-star general in politics.

“I was a former majority leader in the Lagos State House of Assembly and was a senator representing Osun East,” he said.

Omoworare reaffirmed his loyalty to APC and added that he would willingly step down if asked by party elders.

Also, the APC Chairman in the state, Tajudeen Lawal, described Omoworare as an astute politician and core progressive.

Lawal, however, said the party would provide a level playing field for all aspirants. He appealed to all the party’s aspirants to be peaceful and work in unity.

Defection: We’ll support your decision – Osun PDP caucus tells Adeleke

The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) caucus in Osun says it will support the decision of Gov. Ademola Adeleke amid speculation of his defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

There had been speculation of Adeleke defecting to APC ahead of the Aug. 8, 2026 governorship election in the state.

Malam Olawale Rasheed, the spokesperson for the governor in a statement on Saturday in Osogbo, said the PDP caucus gave their support during a meeting on Thursday in Osogbo.

He said the caucus also commended the governor’s leadership style and performance in office.

Rasheed added that the PDP caucus, in a communiqué issued at the end of its meeting held at the Government House, resolved to follow Adeleke wherever he goes.

He, however, recognised the fact that the governor was still consulting on the next line of action.

Amotekun corps warns against cult gathering in Osun

The Osun Security Network, also known as the Amotekun Corps, on Monday warned against any form of unlawful gathering by cult groups to mark the “founder’s” day in the state.

The warning is contained in a statement in Osogbo by the corps commander, Mr Adekunle Omoyele.

Omoyele said the warning became imperative to guard against attempts by cult groups or secret societies to engage in meetings or any form of activity that may threaten the peace and security of the state.

He reiterated the unwavering commitment of the corps to ensuring the safety and stability of the state.

He explained that the corps had received intelligence indicating that some groups may attempt to exploit the fact that July 7 (today) was for clandestine or unlawful gatherings.

The Amotekun commander warned that the state government through its security architecture would not tolerate any individual or group attempting to disturb the peace under the guise of cultural or secret celebrations.

He said any person or group planning to hold meetings or carry out activities associated with secret cults or societies would face the full weight of the law.

Omoyele, who described the state as a land of peace, said the corps would not allow any group of persons to disrupt the peace and harmony already existing in the land.

He urged residents to go about their daily activities without fear, reassuring the public that the corps, in collaboration with other security agencies, had strategically deployed officials across the state to respond to any sign of unrest.

”We want to make it abundantly clear that anyone caught engaging in cult-related activities will face immediate arrest and prosecution.

”There will be zero tolerance for actions that threaten the security of lives and property,” he said.

He encouraged citizens to remain vigilant and promptly report any suspicious activities to security agencies, adding that the corps was dedicated to preserving law and order in the state.

  • Osun: Imam nabbed for raping 8-year-old girl

Osun: Imam nabbed for raping 8-year-old girl

The Osun State command of the Nigeria Police Force has arrested an Imam from the Aranka community in Ede, for allegedly taking sexual advantage of his neighbour’s 8-year-old daughter.

TheNewsGuru understands  that the community was thrown into chaos when the mother of the victim raised an alarm after discovering the Imam, known only as Kadiri, in the act on Saturday afternoon.

Reports indicate that the victim’s mother became concerned after sending her daughter on an errand and noticing that she was taking an unusually long time to return home, prompting her to search for the child.

Vanguard quoted an eyewitness, Arike Adisa, who is a student at the Federal Polytechnic in Ede, as having revealed that the mother’s cries drew attention from nearby residents in the Babasanya area, where she was seen holding onto the elderly suspect.

“She actually caught the man named Abdulkareem Kadiri, an Imam in a mosque around the area. The mother said her daughter was crying and was bleeding from her private part,” Adisa disclosed.

Adisa narrated further, “Some persons attempted to let the suspect get away, but angry residents resisted it. The victim was taken to Babasanya Hospital for appropriate medical tests.

“Because of the tension around the hospital, operatives of Amotekun were invited to arrest the suspect before he was later handed over to the police at ‘B’ Division, Ede.”

The media platform claimed to have obtained a video of the Imam confessing at the police station that he had canal knowledge of the girl.

“I know her parents; we lived in the same compound. I sent her to help me buy groundnuts, and when she returned, I defiled her,” the suspect reportedly admitted.
