  • Labour Party pulls out from Osun LG election Over Security matters

Labour Party pulls out from Osun LG election Over Security matters

The Osun State chapter of the Labour Party (LP) has withdrawn from the local government elections scheduled for Saturday, citing concerns over inadequate security arrangements for the polls.

Adebayo Bello, the State Chairman of LP, made the announcement at the weekend in Osogbo, explaining that the party could not participate in the election due to the lack of proper security measures put in place by the Osun State Independent Electoral Commission (OSSIEC). He further called for the postponement of the election for one to two months, urging the electoral body to address the security issues and resolve any legal complications before proceeding with the poll.

Bello stated, “We believe that postponing the election will give OSSIEC enough time to ensure proper preparations and guarantee a secure environment for the voters and candidates.”

In support of this position, one of the party’s chairmanship candidates, Oyebode Babalola, expressed deep concerns over the potential disruption of the election. Babalola emphasized that although the party was fully prepared for the election, it could not risk participating under the current security circumstances.

“We have seen troubling signs that the election might be disrupted, and we are not willing to put the lives of our supporters and citizens in danger,” Babalola explained. He echoed the call for the election to be postponed, stressing the need for sufficient security to safeguard the election process.

As the party withdraws from the election, it remains to be seen how the situation will affect the overall election planning and whether the authorities will heed the call for a postponement.

  • No judgment reinstated APC chairmen, councillors – Gov Adeleke

No judgment reinstated APC chairmen, councillors – Gov Adeleke

Governor Ademola Adeleke of Osun State has called on the electorate in the state to peacefully exercise their voting rights at the local government election slated for Saturday.

Adeleke, in a statewide broadcast on Thursday in Osogbo, also urged politicians to abide by the rule of law.

The governor, however, said that peace had returned  to the state after the local government crisis, which led to the death of six persons on Monday.

“Osun State is back to normalcy as one of the most peaceful states in the federation,” he said.

Adeleke, who expressed condolences to the families and friends of those who lost their lives and sustained injuries in the crisis, said that the unfortunate incident showed that abiding by the rule of law remained the best path for a peaceful Osun State.

The governor also commended local government staff across the state for complying with the directives to stay away from the council Secretariat.

“The compliance saved our state from further confrontations and casualties. It has returned the state of the living spring to its peaceful and loving nature.

“The rule of law, through the judiciary, will eventually resolve the matter peacefully. Please, let us be patient,” he said.

Adeleke, however, insisted that the Court of Appeal, Akure, did not order the reinstatement of the All Progressives Congress (APC) chairmen and councillors elected in 2022.

“As a government, we have read through the said judgment. We have submitted it to the best of legal minds for interpretation.

“There is nowhere a reinstatement order was issued. No matter the manner of misinterpretation, that judgment contained no consequential order nor any reinstatement directive.

“We have confidence in the democratic credentials of President Bola  Tinubu, who we know will always insist on the rule of law,” the governor said.

Adeleke urged residents of the state  to continue to sustain the peace that had returned to the state.

“We need peaceful coexistence to expand our good governance delivery of the past two years. Osun state remains truly peaceful.

“Finally, I urge all registered voters to vote in the local government election  and conduct themselves peacefully at all times,” he said.

  • Choas in Osun As APC, PDP clash over LG secretariats take over

Choas in Osun As APC, PDP clash over LG secretariats take over

Chaos erupted in Osun State on Monday after some unknown gunmen reportedly storm local government council secretariats amid efforts by the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to assert control.

TheNewsGuru reports that both parties have been asserting their claims over the third tier of government.

The APC contends that a recent Court of Appeal ruling has reinstated the ousted elected council chairmen and councillors, while the State Government maintains that the election was invalidated by the Federal High Court in Osogbo.

Reports indicate that in the early hours of Monday, APC members attempted to seize control of various council secretariats but faced resistance from armed hoodlums.

Additionally, an attempt by the APC to take over in Boluwaduro was thwarted by these hoodlums, and both APC and PDP members were prevented from accessing the council secretariat in Olorunda local government by police intervention.

A traveller on the Ikire-Ibadan expressway, Tunde Shamsudeen, informed Vanguard that hooded gunmen were firing shots into the air in front of the council secretariat in Irewole, Ikire, which is located directly on the expressway.

This situation compelled motorists to divert at Ikoyi to avoid potential crossfire.

Furthermore, it has been reported that the APC managed to gain entry to some council secretariats within the state, although workers did not report for duty in accordance with the directive from the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) in the state.

TNG reports that these developments happened barely a week after Governor of Osun State, Ademola Adeleke, expressed serious concerns regarding reports of a malicious scheme by certain factions within the opposition parties to launch aggressive attacks on local government secretariats throughout the state.

  • APM withdraws from Osun LG polls

APM withdraws from Osun LG polls

Allied Peoples Movement (APM) has announced its withdrawal from the forthcoming local government polls in Osun.

The party’s Chairman, Mr Wale Adebayo, announced this in a statement issued on Saturday in Osogbo.

Adebayo cited what he called lack of transparency exhibited by Osun State Independent Electoral Commission (OSIEC) as the reason for its withdrawal.

He expressed concerns over the activities of OSIEC, stating that its alleged affiliation to a particular political party and its previous actions had demonstrated bias.

He said that the decision came after the Court of Appeal’s recent ruling which reinstated the local government chairmen sacked in 2022.

He said that the party believed that participating in the elections under the current circumstances would be tantamount to endorsing an unfair and unjust process.

According to him, OSIEC’s actions have undermined the integrity of the electoral process, making it impossible for the party to participate in the polls.

He urged the state government and its institutions to fully respect the appellate court ruling and refrain from actions that could lead to civil unrest.

The party chairman also called on the people of the state to remain calm and vigilant, ensuring that their rights were protected and their voices heard.

He, however, reiterated ARM’s commitment to democracy and the rule of law, maintaining that it would continue to seek justice and fairness through available legal means.

Gov Adeleke raises alarm over plot to destabilise Osun

Governor Ademola Adeleke of Osun, on Thursday, raised alarm of an alleged plot by some people to attack local government secretariats in the state.

A statement in Osogbo by Malam Olawale Rasheed, quoted Adeleke as saying he had received credible reports of the plan to also attack leaders of the Peoples Democratict Party (PDP) and top government officials in the state.

According to the governor, the alleged plot is designed to disrupt the forthcoming local government elections and create an atmosphere of chaos to push for the declaration of a state of emergency.

Adeleke, however, said that anybody apprehended in connection with the alleged plot would face the full wrath of the law.

The governor, who described Osun as one of the most peaceful states in the country, decried the reprehensible desperation by some politicians in the opposition.

“I have issued stern directives to the security agencies to secure the state and apprehend any trouble maker.

“There is no legal basis for any plot to take over the local government system in Osun state.

” Elections to fill the offices of chairmen and councilors are scheduled for Feb. 22.

“Anybody who tests our resolve to sustain law and order in Osun state will have himself to blame.

” As the Chief Security Officer of the state, I am determined to deploy all available machinery of the state to maintain peace and punish trouble makers.

“I also call on citizens and residents of the state to go about their normal activities without fear of intimidation.

“The government is on top of the situation.

“We are resolved to keep the state and the streets safe from anti-democratic elements”, he said.

Adeleke also said that there was no court judgement stopping the forthcoming local government election, adding that the opposition All Progressives Congress (APC) should stop false narratives and face the election.

The governor further said that the judgment of a Court of Appeal in Akure was about the filing of court processes by  PDP.

Adeleke added  said that the judgement had nothing to do with the subsisting judgment that sacked the “illegally elected council chairmen and councilors of the APC”.

  • Osun govt, APC disagree over court ruling

Osun govt, APC disagree over court ruling

Osun government has stated that the Court of Appeal judgment in Akure on Monday did not reinstate the sacked All Progressives Congress (APC) local government chairmen and councillors.

Mr Kolapo Alimi, Osun Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment, explained in a statement that the dismissed case was the PDP’s summons challenging the validity of the Oct. 15, 2022 election.

“The originating summons filed by the PDP was dismissed because the notice of election had not been published by Osun State Independent Electoral Commission (OSSIEC) before the suit was filed.

“The implication of today’s judgment is that the PDP never legally challenged the validity of that election,” he said.

However, Alimi noted that another suit—”Suit No. FHC/OS/CS/103/22″—was filed at the Federal High Court, Osogbo, by the Action Peoples Party (APP).

The APP’s suit challenged the validity of the same election, leading to its nullification by the court.

“The court made the following clear and consequential orders,” he stated.

“The Oct. 15, 2022 local government election, held pursuant to the Aug. 15, 2022 notice, is unconstitutional, invalid, null, and void due to legal violations.

“All individuals occupying local government offices due to that election are hereby removed.

“Sections 25 and 26 of the Osun State Independent Electoral Commission Law 2022 are struck down for contradicting the Constitution and Electoral Act 2022,” he said.

He stated that the Federal High Court ruling, delivered by Justice N. Ayo Emmanuel on Nov. 30, 2022, was appealed under Appeal No. CA/AK/226M/2024.

The Court of Appeal upheld the Federal High Court’s judgment in its ruling on Jan. 13, 2025.

According to Alimi, this remains the only valid and subsisting judgment on the Osun 2022 local government election.

He urged security agencies to arrest and prosecute anyone attempting to disrupt peace based on the Court of Appeal’s ruling.

Alimi added that, barring unforeseen circumstances, the local government election scheduled for Feb. 22, would proceed as planned.

Reacting to the judgment, Chief Adegoke Ogunsola, Osun APC Legal Adviser, accused OSSIEC Chairman, Hashim Abioye and the PDP-led government of misrepresenting the court’s decision.

In a statement, Ogunsola claimed OSSIEC and the state government deliberately misinterpreted the Court of Appeal’s ruling.

He argued that the judgment explicitly reinstated the wrongly sacked APC local government chairmen and councillors.

“This is false. The Court of Appeal, in clear terms, nullified the Federal High Court’s decision that had wrongly removed the elected officials from office.

“With this ruling, the APC chairmen and councillors elected in 2022 remain in office, and their tenure has not expired.

“Given this, no local government election can be conducted by OSSIEC in February,” he said.

Also, Tajudeen Lawal, Osun APC Chairman, through a statement by the party’s State Director of Media, Mr Kola Olabisi, praised the judgment reinstating APC officials.

“We congratulate all reinstated council chairmen and councillors on this judicial victory.

“We also rejoice with the good people of Osun for their resilience and support during this difficult period. This is a victory for all,” he said.

APC local government officers, elected on Oct. 15, 2022 through a “yes or no” referendum, were removed by Gov. Ademola Adeleke upon assuming office.

Osun: 7 officers injured over Obaship crisis – Police

Hoodlums on Monday allegedly shot and injured seven police officers on their way to restore peace in Ido-Ajegunle community, in Obokun Local Government of Osun.

CSP Yemisi Opalola, the Police Spokesperson in Osun, made the disclosure in a telephone interview in Osogbo.

Opalola explained that the police received distress call that hoodlums were attacking people in Ido-Ajegunle community, on their way to the community, they were attacked by the hoodlums.

“We received a distress call that hoodlums were attacking residents in Ajegunle Community and when the police team were on their way, they discovered that the hoodlums had blocked the road with a big log of tree.

“When they tried to remove the blockage from the road, the hoodlums started shooting at them from their hiding place in the surrounding bushes.

“However, during the shootout, seven police officers were shot and injured but nobody died,” Opalola said

  • Owa of Igbajo: Osun court nullifies Gov Adeleke’s order sacking Oba Famodun

Owa of Igbajo: Osun court nullifies Gov Adeleke’s order sacking Oba Famodun

An Osun High Court sitting in Ile-Ife, on Thursday, reinstated Oba Adegboyega Famodun as the Owa of Igbajo and nullified the state government’s revocation of his appointment.

The court overturned the White Paper and Executive Order issued by Gov. Ademola Adeleke regarding the Owa of Igbajo chieftaincy title.

Recall the Osun State Government had released six White Papers in January 2024, following an investigation into various chieftaincy matters in the state.

One of the White Papers nullified the previous selection process of the Owa of Igbajo title, which had led to the emergence of Oba Philip Adegboyega Famodun III.

Oba Famodun was appointed and installed as the Owa of Igbajo by former Gov. Adegboyega Oyetola towards the end of his tenure in 2022.

Upon assuming office on Nov. 27, 2022, Adeleke revoked the appointment and set up a committee to review the matter.

The committee’s findings led to the issuance of an Executive Order that nullified Famodun’s installation and called for a fresh selection process.

However, Oba Famodun challenged the government’s decision in court, arguing that his appointment followed due process and should not be revoked.

In her ruling,  Justice A. O. Ayoola, declared that the Executive Order and White Paper had no legal standing to annul a validly conducted chieftaincy process.
