Aiyedatiwa’s emergence divinely orchestrated – Osun Governor, Adeleke

The Governor of Osun state, Ademola Adeleke has posited that the emergence of Lucky Aiyedatiwa as the Governor of Ondo state was divinely orchestrated.

Governor Adeleke made this known while turning in his congratulatory message signed and released by his spokesperson, Olawale Rasheed on Wednesday.

Recall  that Lucky Aiyedatiwa, former acting governor of Ondo State, was sworn in as the substantive governor of the state on Wednesday, December 27, 2023.

Aiyedatiwa’s swearing-in followed the death of Rotimi Akeredolu.

The Ondo State government in a confirmation statement later in the day revealed that Akeredolu died from prostate cancer in Germany.

Governor Adeleke while lamenting the demise of the former Governor, Rotimi Akeredolu, noted that God is the alpha and omega and the giver of life and power.

He also urged the new governor to continue his devotion to the service of the people and humanity.

“I rejoice with my colleague, the new Governor of Ondo State. This is a golden opportunity to expand delivery of democratic dividends, heal the wounds of the past and unite the state for greater advancement.

“Ondo State has passed through multiple turbulence. It is my prayers that the power transition will deepen democracy and widen the hope and aspirations of the people for a people-oriented Governor.

“I wish my brother best of tenure in the service of the state. I look forward to working with him and other colleagues for regional development cooperation and for national reform for a stronger economy,” he said.

  • What we are doing to retain our health workers – Gov. Adeleke

What we are doing to retain our health workers – Gov. Adeleke

Gov. Ademola Adeleke of Osun says his administration is creating an enabling environment to retain health professionals in the state  against the “Japa syndrome”.

Adeleke said this at the official inauguration of Osun Health Insurance Scheme (OHIS) Office Complex in Abere, Osogbo.

”We  have targeted action against japa syndrome. Our government has approved the full payment of hazard allowances to all our health staff as approved by the Federal Government.

“We also intend to replace all healthcare workers that have left with new ones with improved packages.

“And this had been adequately appropriated for in the 2024 budget.”

The governor also said that his administration planned to renovate all the 332 focal primary health centres and some comprehensive health centres in the state.

He said the OHIS office complex being inaugurated was to create an environment conducive for the administration of health insurance policies for a better health for Osun citizens.

“Our government recognises the importance of health insurance and intends to reduce or even eliminate out of pocket payment for treatment in the hospitals.

“That is the reason for making it compulsory for all political office holders to enroll in the Osun Health Insurance Scheme, in addition to civil servants that are also compulsorily enrolled.

“I want to use this opportunity to encourage the informal sector, traders, artisans, businessmen, unions etc to key into the programme,” he said.

Earlier, the governor met  with journalists in the state to appreciate them for their support and  to announce his return to the state after his vacation.

The governor , thereafter,  took  journalists to inspect the ongoing road dualisation  taking place at Oke-Fia Axis in Osogbo, the state capital.

  • Osun Justice recommended for compulsory retirement

Osun Justice recommended for compulsory retirement

The National Judicial Council (NJC) has recommended the compulsory retirement of Justice S. O. Falola of Osun State High Court from the Bench.

The Director of Information, NJC, disclosed this in a statement on Thursday in Abuja.

He said that the recommendation was made sequel to the findings of an Investigation Committee in a petition written against His Lordship by Mr Dapo Olowo and Polaris Bank.

Falola had granted a Garnishee Order Absolute against the Bank for the sum of N283,174,000.00 in a questionable and strange manner.

He equally endorsed the order, attaching the account of the garnishee with another garnishee and not the account of the  judgment debtor who had the legal obligation to pay the supposed judgement sum.

The committee found out that the Judge misconducted himself by entertaining suit No HIK/41/2018 when there was no evidence of a judgement of the Kwara State High Court before him, neither was there a Certificate of Registration of same in Osun State to confer jurisdiction on him.

It further found out that the conduct of the subject Judge travelled to Lagos to visit the Counsel of the bank in his Chambers on the issue of garnishee proceedings, unbecoming of the standard expected of a judicial officer.

Consequently, the council resolved to recommend him to Governor Ademola Adeleke of Osun State for compulsory retirement with immediate effect.

It said y in the exercise of its disciplinary powers under the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, as amended, the NJC has suspended Falola from office pending the approval of the recommendation of his compulsory retirement by the governor.

The Council also considered the reports of other Investigation Committees that had concluded their sittings, and dismissed the petitions written against some judges for being unmeritorious, or withdrawal of petition by the petitioners.

They are Justices Ekaete F. F. Obot, Chief Judge, Akwa Ibom State, Benson C. Anya of High Court Abia State, Z. B. Abubakar of Federal High Court, Opufaa Ben-Whyte and Augusta Uche K. Chuku of the High Court of Rivers State.

However, Justice A. I. Akobi of the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory is to be issued a letter of guidance to take proper charge and control of his court.

The Plenary also considered the report of its three Preliminary Complaints Assessment Committees on 51 fresh petitions written against Federal and State Judicial Officers.

It thereafter, decided to constitute 11 panels to investigate petitions that had merits and dismissed the remaining petitions for being subjudice, having been withdrawn, and the subject judges having retired from service.

The Council also resolved to report A. A. Aribisala, SAN to Legal Practitioners’ Privileges Committee (LPPC) for investigation and disciplinary action, for the unpalatable and derogatory remarks he made against a judicial officer and by extension, the NJC in his petition to the council.

It considered and declined the request of Gov. Ademola Adeleke of Osun State requesting its permission to swear in the next most senior judge in the state in the acting capacity, following allegations levelled against Justice Adepele Ojo, Chief Judge, Osun State and the resolution of the State House of Assembly to suspend him.

The Council affirmed that Ojo is still the recognised Chief Judge of Osun State, and would not work on the resolution of a State House of Assembly, as it is the only body constitutionally empowered to investigate judicial officers and recommend same for any action to the Governor. Consequently, Osun State should revert to status quo.

It also received notification of retirements of seven judicial officers and notification of deaths of six serving judicial officers of the federal and state courts.

  • Osun Speaker clears air on suspension of Chief Judge

Osun Speaker clears air on suspension of Chief Judge

Speaker Adewale Egbedun of Osun House of Assembly, says the  assembly has no intention to encroach on duties of the National Judicial Council (NJC) by the  suspension of  the state’s Chief Judge, Justice Adepele Ojo.

Egbedun, in a statement by his media aide, Olamide Tiamiyu on Monday in Osogbo, said the assembly was only performing its constitutional duties.

The assembly had on Nov. 16, passed a resolution for the suspension of the CJ over corrupt allegations.

Egbedun, during an emergency plenary, said the suspension was based on series of petitions received by the assembly against the CJ.

He  said the petitions bordered on corruption, gross misconduct and abuse of office.

The assembly also advised the governor to appoint the most Senior Judge in the state as the acting CJ.

On the same day, Gov. Ademola Adeleke, in a statement by his spokesperson, Mallam Olawale Rasheed, approved the suspension of the CJ.

The governor also announced the appointment of Justice Olayinka Afolabi as the acting CJ with immediate effect.

However, in another statement on Sunday, the state government said the governor had neither removed the CJ nor appointed anyone in acting capacity.

A statement by Mr Kolapo Alimi, the Commissioner for Information and Civic Orientation, said the governor had only forwarded the resolution of the assembly  and recommendations for an acting appointment to the Chief Justice of the Federation for his action.

The speaker, however, said that the assembly was  fulfilling its constitutional duty of exposing corruption as stipulated in sections 128 (2) (b) of the 1999 Constitution, as amended.

Egbedun said that that the assembly received several petitions against the Chief Judge.

He said that the assembly would have been negligent and in breach of its constitutional responsibilities, if it had ignored the petitions.

According to him,  some of the allegations against the CJ include diversion of the funds for the state’s  judiciary library, diversion of the robe allowance of other judges of the state High Court, amounting to N5 million.

The speaker also said that the CJ was accused of indiscriminate suspension of Judicial staff without going through the Judicial Commission and diversion of their salaries.

He said the CJ was also accused of diversion of revenue due to the government from electronic affidavits through the sole appointment of a consultant.

“In this case, the consultant makes N1,000 on an affidavit as against just N250 that is being remitted to the state coffers,” he said.

Egbedun said the assembly was aware of the position of the 1999 Constitution and the decisions of the Supreme Court in various similar cases.

He said that  the governor  and the assembly could not  remove a Chief Judge from office without the participation of the National Judicial Council.

The speaker urged   commentators to be cautious in their utterances, as they might convey the misconception that the assembly had removed or intended to remove the CJ without the involvement of the National Judicial Council.

Egbedun also said that the assembly was not in anyway listed  as a defendant in the lawsuit filed by the CJ at the National Industrial Court, Ibadan.

  • Protest rocks Chief Judge’s office in Osun

Protest rocks Chief Judge’s office in Osun

Members of Osun chapter of Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria (JUSUN) embarked on a peaceful protest on Monday in Osogbo, picketing the office of the Chief Judge of the State, Justice Adepele Ojo.

They demanded reasons for the delay in the payment of their wardrobe allowances since 2021, in spite of funding by the state government.

They also demanded reasons behind what they called unlawful suspension of some JUSUN members from office for upwards of 57 months without proper investigation.

The unionists also demanded explanation about the stoppage of training for judiciary workers at the National Judicial Institute in spite of annual budgetary allocations for the purpose.

Chairman of the union, Mr Oluwagbemiga Eludire, told newsmen that the picketing of Justice Ojo’s office had nothing to do with her suspension from office on Thursday and the reversal on Sunday.

Gov. Ademola Adeleke announced the suspension of Justice Ojo from office on Thursday, but reversed himself on Sunday after a public uproar condemning the initial action.

In a statement issued in Osogbo on Thursday, Gov. Adeleke’s spokesman, Mr Olawale Rasheed, said Adeleke approved the suspension of Justice Ojo after the resolution of the state’s House of Assembly.

He stated that the house resolution was to give the legislature room to investigate its allegations of misconduct, abuse of power, corruption and disregard for rule of law against the chief judge.

Rasheed stated that Gov. Adeleke also approved the appointment of Justice Olayinka Afolabi as the Acting Chief Judge of the state.

He stated that Gov. Adeleke had directed his deputy, Mr Kola Adewusi to swear in Afolabi in acting capacity pending approval by the National Judicial Council (NJC) in Abuja.

The swearing in did not hold, however, as Adewusi, scheduled to oversee the event, and Justice Afolabi, the Acting Chief Judge did not show up at the venue of the exercise on Friday.

The NJC also did not give approval for the suspension of Justice Ojo and for her replacement by Justice Afolabi.

On Sunday, Nov. 19, Gov. Adeleke reversed himself, and denied that he suspended Justice Ojo from office.

He said he only forwarded the resolution of the House of Assembly asking the chief judge to “step aside’’ pending the investigation of the allegation of corruption against her.

Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment, Mr Kolapo Alimi stated in Osogbo on Sunday that the governor had not even appointed any judicial officer as acting Chief Judge.

He added that Gov. Adeleke only recommended the acting chief judge to the NJC, being the most senior in line.

“The government of Osun State has denied news reports that Gov. Adeleke has removed the Chief Judge and appointed an acting Chief Judge.

“The governor only forwarded the resolution of the House of Assembly and recommendation for an acting appointment to the Chief Justice of the Nigeria for decision and action.

“With all sense of responsibility, it is important to set the records straight.

“Gov. Adeleke only notified the Chief Justice of Nigeria as the Chairman of the NJC in writing about the resolutions of the House of Assembly following a series of petitions made against the chief judge.

“In the communication, the governor intimated the CJN of the recommendation of the House that the Chief Judge should step aside.

“He included his own submission for an acting appointment to fill the vacuum while the NJC reviews and decides on the petition.

“The governor in the same letter recommended to the CJN, the appointment of the most senior judicial officer, Justice Olayinka Afolabi for thorough consideration and further processing by the same NJC through the CJN.

“We therefore state categorically that Gov. Adeleke has not appointed any judicial official as acting Chief Judge and nobody has been sworn in as Acting Chief Judge of Osun,’’ Alimi stated.

Justice Ojo delivered a landmark judgment in Osogbo in May when she sentenced a popular and influential hotelier in Ile-Ife, Osun, to death over the murder of a guest on his property.

  • Osun govt denies removal of Chief Judge

Osun govt denies removal of Chief Judge

The Osun State Government has said Governor Ademola Adeleke neither removed the State’s Chief Judge, Justice Adepele Ojo, nor appointed anyone in acting capacity.

This is contained in a statement issued by the Commissioner for Information and Civic Orientation, Mr Kolapo Alimi, on Sunday in Osogbo.

Alimi explained the governor had only forwarded the resolution of the House of Assembly and recommendations for an acting appointment to the Chief Justice of the Federation for his action.

Recall the governor had, on Thursday, announced the appointment of Justice Olayinka Afolabi as the acting Chief Judge of the State with immediate effect.

Olayinka’s appointment followed last Thursday’s approval by the governor of the resolution of the assembly for the suspension of the chief judge over allegations of misconduct.

Ojo was asked to step aside pending the conclusion of the investigation of the allegations of misconduct, abuse of power, corruption and disregard for rule of law levelled against her by the assembly.

Adeleke, in a statement by his Spokesperson, Mallam Olawale Rasheed, on Thursday had directed his deputy, Kola Adewusi, to perform the swearing-in of the acting chief judge on Friday.

The swearing-in did not, however, hold.

The commissioner said that the governor had duly notified the Chief Justice of the Federation as the Chairman of the National Judicial Council (NJC) in writing about the resolutions of the house of assembly, following series of petitions against Ojo.

“In the communication, Mr Governor intimated the CJN of the recommendation of the assembly that the chief judge should step aside.

“And he included his own submission for an acting appointment to fill the vacuum while the NJC reviews and decides on the petition.

“To that end, the governor, in the same letter, recommended to the CJN the appointment of the most senior judicial officer, Hon. Justice Olayinka David Afolabi, for thorough consideration and further processing by the same NJC, through the CJN.

“We urge the public to note that while the house of assembly recommended the appointment of a replacement to the governor in its resolution.

“The governor, however, toed the line of law by writing the CJN on the entire development and submitting all materials for NJC, as mandated national agency.

“We, therefore, wish to state categorically that Gov. Adeleke has not appointed any judicial official as acting Chief Judge and nobody has been sworn-in as acting Chief Judge of Osun State,” he said.

Alimi described Adeleke as a man of due process and rule of law, with a deep level of respect for the bar and the bench, the NJC and the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

He assured the public that Adeleke was fully aware of the limit of his powers as well as the responsibilities of the various agencies of government and would, therefore, not act, in any way, to violate the constitution and the rule of law.

Gov Adeleke fires, appoints acting Chief Judge in Osun

Governor Ademola Adeleke of Osun State has announced the appointment of Justice Olayinka Afolabi, as the acting Chief Judge of the State with immediate effect.

The appointment of Afolabi was in spite of the order of the National Industrial Court in Ibadan on Thursday which restrained the Osun government from terminating the appointment of Justice Adepele Ojo as chief judge.

Justice J.D. Peter had also ordered the government to continue to pay the salary entitlements, emoluments and other benefits of the chief judge.

However, Adeleke’s appointment of Afolabi followed the resolution of the state House of Assembly on Thursday for the suspension of Ojo over allegations of misconduct.

The Deputy-Governor,  Kola Adewusi, was directed to perform the swearing-in ceremony of the Acting Chief Judge on Friday.

Ojo was asked to step aside pending investigation of allegations of misconduct, abuse of power, corruption and disregard for rule of law against her by the assembly.

A statement by Malam Olawale Rasheed, the Spokesperson to the governor, said that the appointment  of Olayinka  as acting CJ was sequel to  the approval of the resolution of the assembly by the governor.

The lawmakers had resolved at plenary that the next in order of seniority to Ojo be sworn-in immediately to avoid any vacuum in the third arm government.

According to the lawmakers, the CJ  should step aside, not for any disciplinary action, but to allow for proper investigation of the allegations.

The assembly resolved that the executive should immediately notify the National Judicial Council and the State Judicial Service Commission of its resolutions.

It directed its committee on Judiciary, Public Petitions and Legal Matters to  investigate the the Chief Judge  by inviting her  within seven days from Thursday.

Recall that the coalition of civil society organisations in Osun had on Wednesday accused the governor of  plotting to remove the CJ.

The coalition at a press conference said that the governor was attempting to remove the CJ through the legislative arm.

But the state government denied the allegation.

In his reaction to the allegation, the Commissioner for Information and Civic Orientation, Mr Kolapo Alimi, said that the state government  was unaware of any plot against the chief judge.

Alimi, in a statement, said that state government was commitment to due process and stipulated regulations across the arms of government.

The commissioner said that the governor was  not in a position to stop the legislature from doing its statutory job and neither can he hamstring the judiciary in the performance of its duties.

JUST IN: Gov Adeleke unveils uniform for public servants in Osun

Governor Ademola Adeleke of Osun has directed all public servants in the State to wear Adire to work every Wednesday to promote Nigerian culture.

Adeleke’s directive is contained in a circular issued by the State Head of Service, Mr Ayanleye Aina, on Thursday in Osogbo.

The circular said the directive affected all categories of public servants across ministries, departments and agencies.

It also affected tertiary institutions, local governments, local development councils and area offices.

”Consequently, every Wednesday is adopted as Adire Osun day with all accounting officers and heads of agencies expected to comply with the directive.

“Additionally, all political appointees are also expected to comply with the directive from the State Executive Council to special advisers, and other categories of appointees”, it said.

The circular further said the governor presented the issue of wearing Adire during the last State Executive Council meeting and it was unanimous approved and adopted.

The circular quoted Adeleke as saying that Adire, actually had its source from Osun, noting that the new decision will reassert the traditional claim of Osun to the adire genre.

The governor recalled his meeting with the Gov. Dapo Abiodun of Ogun, where the duo resolved to host annual Adire Day celebration.

Adeleke further announced his administration’s plan to create mini-industrial clusters to support the Adire industry and other craft sub-sectors in the state.

“Our administration is working on the creation of SME industrial clusters. The Adire and other craft sub-sectors will be supported to grow and flourish.

“By this decision, we are determined to rebuild the Adire industry, that is under threat from foreign mass producers.

“We are poised to breathe life into our culture with Osun as the cradle of the Yoruba nation,” he said.

Recall that Adeleke’s predecessor, Gboyega Oyetola, had on July 11, 2021 directed all civil servants to wear Adire every Thursday to boost the fabric industry.

Gov. Ademola Adeleke of Osun on Thursday presented the sum of N273.9 billion 2024 Appropriation bill to the state house of assembly.

Adeleke said the budget tagged” Budget of Reconstruction and Recovery” was made up of Recurrent Expenditure of N165.65 billion and Capital Expenditure of N108.25 billion.

The governor said that the budget was to recover, revamp and rebuild the “battered economy” of the state, inherited by his administration.

Adeleke said he was presenting the budget in line with the existing laws, which stipulated that draft budget of a state should be presented to the house of assembly for approval before the end of the year.

He appealed for the speedy passage of the appropriation bill by the lawmakers.

In his remarks, Mr Adewale Egbedun, the Speaker of the assembly, said the budget presentation was historical as it the first budget being presented by the governor and the first to be deliberated upon by the 8th assembly.

Egbedun promised that the assembly would ensure that the budget is passed on time.

The Speaker directed the state’s Ministries, Agencies and Departments to furnish the assembly with 35 copies of their budget.

Also, the Speaker announced the names of the governor’s nominees into the boards of some state statutory commissions which included, the Osun Independent Electoral Commission and Osun Assembly Service Commission.

Others are the Osun Judicial Service Commission and the Osun Civil Service Commission.
