INEC’ll be bold, courageous in conducting 2023 elections – Chairman

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Friday said it has learned from the recently conducted Ekiti and Osun governorship elections ahead of 2023 general elections.

Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, INEC Chairman, made this known in Abuja at the Yiaga Africa  Post-election Roundtable and Public Presentation of Final Report on the Observation of the 2022 Ekiti and Osun Governorship Elections.

Yakubu, represented by Mr Festus Okoye, INEC Commissioner for Information and Voter Education, said the commission would continue to listen and learn from valuable lessons from those who observed the governorship elections.

He said, “I want to seize this opportunity to assure Nigerians that this present commission will be bold and courageous in prosecuting the 2023 general elections.

“We will continue to harvest lessons from the Edo, Ondo, Anambra, Ekiti, and the Osun governorship elections in shaping the way we approach the 2023 general election.

” We are going to harvest all the good practices, we are also going to look at some of those issues we did not do so well and we will improve on them.

“Our assurance is that this commission will  not lower the bar and we are going to  continue  to upload polling unit results to our INEC  results  viewing portal  this commission will not depart from it.”

Yakubu said that citizens would be involved in every inch of the process in terms of knowing what is going on at the various polling units through INEC,s processes and procedures.

He added the commission would continue to also manage the results collation process transparently.

He encouraged civil society organisations, the media, political parties, and all the critical stakeholders to study the Electoral Act 2022 and have a working knowledge of the act.

He said unless there is good knowledge of the document, it would be very difficult to follow the trajectory of the electoral process, the innovations, and some of the changes the commission would make.

He also pleaded for the understanding and cooperation of Nigerians.

“We recognise the fact that the 2023 elections will be challenging, but we have the capacity and we also have the courage to face those challenges in a very broad and courageous manner,” he assured.

Dr Hussain Abdu, Board Chair, Yiaga Africa, said the Ekiti and Osun governorship elections marked a very significant turning point for electoral history in the country.

He said this was more important as they were held after the amendment of the Electoral Act,  particularly the use of the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS).

He, however, said that logistics remained one major challenge of the electoral process, adding that the event was aimed at looking at some of the electoral challenges from past elections to chat a way forward for 2023.

“Citizens are beginning to believe that their votes will count and when you raise the hope of citizens is always better that if you cannot improve on what you have done, then you must sustain it,” he said.

Abdu also called on INEC to address the challenge of disproportional polling units where some units would be overcrowded with thousands of voters whereas other areas would be scanty.

He urged INEC to work on its logistics and the distribution of voters to polling units among others and called on all stakeholders to work collectively towards achieving a better electoral process ahead of the 2023 elections.

The Chairman of the Inter-party Advisory  Council (IPAC), Mr. Yabagi Sani, advised Yiaga Africa and INEC to work closely with political parties ahead of 2023 because the election would be a watershed in the journey of entrenching democracy in the country.

Sani urged INEC not to rest on its oars but continue to work to build the confidence of citizens to own the process and promote democracy.

He added that “As political parties, we observed that there is still a lacuna that all of us must have to weigh in ,that is the transmission of electoral results form polling units.

“Yes, you transmit the results to the INEC portal but the biggest issue which is why our elections are questionable is the issue of collation because there is a saying that it is not those that vote that determine who wins but those who count.”

Ms Cynthia Mbamalu, Director of Programmes, Yiaga Africa, while presenting the summary of the report said it covered the pre-election environment, INEC’s preparation, security atmosphere, voter education and critical incidents at the elections.

Mbamalu said the report recommended that the National Assembly should expedite action in passing the National Electoral Offences Commission Bill to allow for the arrest and protection of electoral violators.

She urged INEC to revisit voter allocation to polling units for equitable distribution of voters, prioritise an audit of voter register to avoid duplication and the inter-agency committee should be expanded to include anti-graft agencies among others.

She said the report called on security agencies to be neutral and professional during election duties, build early warning systems against violence and develop strategic ways to prevent vote-buying.

She said the report urged political parties to engage in issue-based campaigns, refrain from vote-buying, calling the media to remain professional, while CSOs should continue increased voter education.

Osun: We didn’t work against Oyetola’s re-election – APC faction

A faction of All Progressives Congress (APC) in Osun has denied the allegation that its members voted against Gov. Gboyega Oyetola, during the July 16 governorship election in the state.

The Chairman of the faction, Mr Rasaq Sanisile, while addressing a news conference on Wednesday in Osogbo, said that it was the mismanagement of the crisis within the party that led to the party’s electoral misfortune during the election.

Sanisile called on the national secretariat of the party to immediately restructure Osun APC, noting that the only way to bring back the winning strength of the party is to reorganise it before the 2023 general elections.

“We note with foreboding sense of great loss, that it was an avoidable electoral defeat if issues affecting the party, which we, as a set of discerning politicians had brought to public attention about two years ago, had been handled differently.

“Our early warning was met with strident attempts at stifling our voice and muzzle us up if necessary.

“We had foretold of clear degeneration and weak position of Osun APC and had offered a seven-point agenda by which the party could be turned around and re-energised for greater efficiency and result oriented.

“Gov. Oyetola, Prince Gboyega Famodun, the APC Chairman and the entire Ilerioluwa caucus of the APC simply delivered victory to the opposition.

“By their obvious lack of party management, understanding, crass ignorance, unabashedly protection of selfish interests, exhibition of huge ego, and so on.

“They clearly deviated from the best practices in politicking, party administration, governance and democracy”, he said.

Sanisile also said that members of the faction were still bonafide members of APC in the state.

“We remain bona-fide members of Osun APC.

“The National Secretariat has a duty not to wait any longer. The wall of Jericho has fallen and Osun APC should undergo immediate re-organisation, rebooting, re-energising for greater future performances” he said.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC),  on July 17,  declared Sen. Ademola Adeleke of the Peoples Democratic party (PDP) as the winner of the governorship election in the state.

Adeleke scored 403,371 votes, to defeat Gov. Oyetola, who scored 375,027 votes.

  • My victory cannot be stolen through backdoor – Osun governor-elect, Adeleke

My victory cannot be stolen through backdoor – Osun governor-elect, Adeleke

The Osun governor-elect, Ademola Adeleke has urged his supporters to keep calm ahead of the election petition tribunal and that his victory cannot be stolen.

Recall that the All Progressives Congress in Osun State and the state governor, Adegboyega Oyetola had on Friday submitted a petition at the Osun State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal in Osogbo to challenge the victory of Senator Ademola Adeleke.

The chairman of the party, Gboyega Famodun, had on Thursday, hinted that the APC was ready to drag the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and its candidate to Election Petition Tribunal.

In a statement issued by his spokesperson, Olawale Rasheed on Saturday, Adeleke declared that the July 16th election was one of the most transparent elections in recent Nigerian history.

Adeleke also assured that the people’s mandate freely given against overwhelming odds will be defended and validated.

The statement revealed that the “PDP legal team is taking appropriate action on the filing. I call on my supporters at home and abroad to remain calm as this divine victory cannot be stolen through the backdoor

“I urge the good people of Osun State who voted massively to reject bad governance to remain calm. We are doing the needful to defend their mandate. • Osun 2022: APC heads to tribunal over governorship poll

Osun 2022: APC heads to tribunal over governorship poll

The All Progressives Congress (APC), says it plans to challenge the results of the July 16 Osun governorship election at the election petition tribunal.

Mr Gboyega Famodun, the state APC Chairman said this at a news conference on Thursday at the party secretariat, in Osogbo.

Famodun said that the decision followed assurances by the party lawyers who said that there were good grounds to challenge the results after they had studied them.

“We are going to the tribunal. Our lawyers had informed us that we have good reasons to challenge the results of the election at the tribunal,” he said.

He decried the suspected anti-party activities of an APC faction in the state ”The Osun Progressive (TOP)”.

The Chairman said that the faction, which was under the control of the Minister of Interior and former Gov. Rauf Aregbesola, worked for the opposition, the Peoples Democratic Party  (PDP), to deny the APC victory at the election.

“The recent protest by the group, calling for his removal as the party’s chairman and the restructuring of the party, after they openly supported the PDP candidate, Sen. Ademola Adeleke, during the governorship election was shameful and wicked.

“Our position is that the protest was shameful, callous, primitive, selfish, wicked, misplaced and inconsiderate for the Aregbesola supporters, who glaringly worked against the success of Gov.

Oyetola at the polls, to now be canvassing restructuring of the party through a sponsored protest.

“Assuming without conceding that there are challenges within the party, the protesters and their patron should know that they lack moral right to either suggest or effect any likely solution for the restructuring of our party, as it is on record that they massively and collectively worked against Oyetola.

“Since  members of the factional group  (TOP) people, had done their worst by working assiduously and conscientiously by teaming up with the PDP for the success of Adeleke, which is the highest level of an anti-party activity that can be committed by any politician, it will be a needless venture to enter into any pact with the  group that is bereft of honour,” he said.

Highlights of the briefing included the passing of a Voters of Confidence on Gov. Gboyega Oyetola and Famodun by the state executive of the party.
