Osun communal clashes: Gov. Adeleke vows to remove erring traditional rulers

Gov. Ademola Adeleke of Osun State says the government will remove from office any traditional ruler that fails to sustain peace in their community.

Adeleke, in a statement by his Media Spokesperson, Mallam Olawale Rasheed on Monday, said that action would be taken against traditional rulers of Ifon and Ilobu/Erin-Osun communities in Orolu and Irepodun Local Government Areas.

He said that action would be taken, if the traditional rulers failed to sustain peace and de-escalation crisis in their communities.

The governor issued the warning against the backdrop of online reports that some faceless groups across the conflict areas, were planning another round of attacks.

“In the midst of sallah celebrations, I got reports of some people planning another round of conflict around Ifon, Ilobu and Erin Osun towns,” he said.

According to him, security agencies have tightened surveillance to ensure no attacks take place, and are speeding up the interrogation of key chieftains and actors in the conflict.

“I will remind top leaders of the towns that the peace undertaken they are signing are not for joke. They will be held accountable. There will be accountability before the law.

“The curfew we relaxed was on humanitarian grounds. As a compassionate government, we know many innocent people are suffering because of the evil agenda of a few elements across the conflict areas.

“Any attempt to exploit the adjustment of the curfew for renewed violence will be met with full re-imposition of the 24-hour curfew.

“Additionally, I will remove from office, any traditional ruler where violence recurs. This card is on the table. Royal fathers of each town must call their subjects to order.

“I will wield the big stick. Enough is enough,” the governor said.

Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke has directed security agencies to arrest the perpetrators of the violent communal clash that occurred in Ifon, Ilobu, and Erin-Osun communities in the state.

Adeleke issued the directive during a visit to the affected communities on Monday, where he conducted an on-the-spot assessment.

According to reports, many houses, shops, cars, motorcycles, and other valuables were destroyed during the violence.

Adeleke condemned the destruction, stating that his administration would take every necessary step to end the “needless destruction of lives and property” in the affected areas.

“This crisis has gone on for too long, and I will put an end to it.

“When I was elected, I told the people to stop fighting over land disputes. Violence only drives away potential investors,” the governor said.

He emphasised that there was no need for fighting over land and made it clear that the culprits would be held accountable.

“Other political parties will participate in the election and I believe there will be a level playing ground for all to test their popularity at the poll,” he said.

Adeleke, responding to the call to cancel the election, said “democracy is governed by rule of law and nobody can assume the authority of the court”.

The Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi, on Thursday advised Adeleke not to proceed with the election.

Fagbemi urged the governor to respect the Court of Appeal, Akure, judgement which restored the All Progressives Congress (APC) local government chairmen and councillors sacked in 2022 by the Federal High Court, Osogbo.

The governor advised all parties, including local and national stakeholders, to abide by democratic norms.

“As for me and my people, we stand by the rule of law, not illegal self-help.

“The election is going to hold and the outcome will fast track development at the local level.

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Osun has withdrawn from the local government election scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 22.

This is contained in a letter dated Feb. 17, signed by the APC state Publicity Secretary, Alao Kamorudeen, addressed to the Secretary of the State Independent Electoral Commission (OSSIEC).

A copy of the letter obtained by NAN on Thursday in Osogbo, stated that APC would not participate based on the Feb. 10 Court of Appeal judgment which reinstated its chairmen and councillors.

The letter read: “Recall that judgment of the Federal High Court in suit No. FHF/OS/CS/94/2022 was meritoriously nullified on Feb. 10 by Court of Appeal in Akure, in appeal No. CA/AK/270/2022 between APC and 3 others V. Peoples Democratic Party and others.

“By the judgment, the elected officers have resumed offices as allowed by the Appeal Court.

“The implication of the Court of Appeal judgment as cited above is that the seats are no longer vacant.

“In view of the forgoing, we hereby state that APC and all its candidates have by this letter informed the commission that we withdraw from the local government election scheduled for Feb. 22.

“Same as become unnecessary, superfluous and unlawful with the development.”
NAN reports that there had been crisis between APC and PDP over the Court of Appeal judgment in respect of the sacked APC council chairmen and councillors.

While the PDP claimed that the Feb. 10 judgment of the Court of Appeal, Akure, did not reinstate the sacked APC chairmen and councillors elected in 2022, APC insisted on their return local government secretariats.

Crisis, however, erupted on Monday when both parties were laying claim to local government secretariats across the state.

Police confirmed that six persons lost their lives and scores injured during crisis.

  • House of Reps to investigate Osun LG crisis

House of Reps to investigate Osun LG crisis

The House of Representatives has resolved to investigate the Osun local government crisis which has claimed no fewer than six lives in the state.

NAN reports that the resolution followed the adoption of a motion sponsored by Rep. Bamidele Salam (PDP-Osun) and nine other members from the state at plenary on Wednesday.

Moving the motion earlier, Salam recalled that on Feb. 17, violence broke out in several parts of Osun.

He said that the violence was as a result of the attempt to take over the administration of local governments in the state by the officials who were sacked by a court judgment in November 2022.

Salam said that the sacked officials broke the gates of their respective local government secretariats to forcefully take over the councils without any court order.

He said Gov. Ademola Adeleke had earlier raised an alarm on the imminent threat to peace and security in the state.

The lawmaker said that the governor had also called on the Inspector-General of Police and heads of other security agencies to take proactive steps to forestall the violence.

He expressed the concern that if the current trend of resort to self-help by political actors was not nipped in the bud, it might encourage citizens to do same in the face of perceived rights and privileges.

“The present situation in Osun may snowball into a free-for-all unless urgent actions are taken by relevant authorities.

“The preventable violence which happened in Osun had led to the death of six persons while scores of others suffered severe injuries and presently receiving treatment in various hospitals,” he said.

Salam said that if prompt action was not taken against the ongoing lawlessness and arbitrariness, it might escalate into more serious security challenges in the state.

According to him, the most fundamental objective and primary purpose of any government is the security and welfare of the people.

He said that as representatives of the people, the house had the duty and responsibility of ensuring safety of lives and property in the country.

Salam, however, said that the police, Department of State Services (DSS) and other security agencies had the capacity to restore normalcy in all the local government councils.

In his ruling, the Speaker, Rep Tajudeen Abbas, said that an ad hoc committee would be constituted to carry out the investigation.

NAN reports that Abbas led the house into observing a minute silence in honour of those who lost their lives during the crisis.

The directive was issued in a statement by the party’s Director of Media and Information, Kola Olabisi, on Tuesday in Osogbo.

Tajudeen said the directive was a sign of respect for Aderemi Abass, a former chairman of Irewole Local Government Area, who was killed in Ikire on Monday.

He instructed them to comply with the order until further notice.

Lawal, describing Abass as a peace-loving man, condemned his killing as inhuman, wicked, and callous.

He commended the council chairmen for adhering to the Court of Appeal’s ruling.

Lawal appealed to the police to do everything possible to apprehend those responsible for the killing.

He added that the party’s leadership would ensure that Abass did not die in vain.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports tensions between the APC and PDP following the Court of Appeal’s ruling on the sacked APC chairmen and councillors.

The PDP claimed the Court of Appeal’s Feb. 10 ruling did not reinstate the sacked APC officials, but the APC insisted on their return.

Conflict erupted on Monday as both parties claimed control of local government secretariats across the state.

The police later confirmed that six people died during the unrest.

The Police Command in Osun has confirmed that six persons lost their lives in the crisis over the control of local government secretariats in Osun on Monday.

The crisis erupted between the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), over the Court of Appeal judgment sacking of APC council chairmen and councillors.

According to NAN, the PDP claimed that the Feb. 10 judgment of the Court of Appeal did not reinstate the sacked APC chairmen and councillors elected in 2022, APC insisted on their return.

This is contained in a statement by the command`s spokesperson, CSP Yemisi Opalola, on Tuesday in Osogbo.

Opalola said that several people also sustained injuries during the crisis.

She, however, said that the Inspector -General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, had deployed mobile policemen to the state to ensure a peaceful atmosphere.

Opalola said that the mobile police, who were deployed from other states, arrived on Monday night.

  • You can’t return to office, PDP tells sacked Osun LG chairmen, councillors

You can’t return to office, PDP tells sacked Osun LG chairmen, councillors

The national leadership of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Monday told the sacked local government chairmen and councilors in Osun to perish the thought of coming back to office.

The party, in a statement by its National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba in Abuja, described the attempt by the council chairmen and councilors to return to office as a futile venture, warning that it would have dire consequences.

Ologunagba advised the All Progressives Congress (APC) to accept the reality rather than resorting to self-help and misrepresentations that might trigger crisis and destabilise the state.

“PDP asserts that the fate of the ousted local government chairmen and councilors was sealed by the judgment of the Court to Appeal which nullified the unconstitutional attempt by the then Gov. Gboyega Oyetola to illegally plant them as LG officers in the guise of an election,” he said.

Ologunagba said that from the July 16, 2022 governorship election, APC ought to have known that attempting to side-step the laws and manipulate the process to illegally install local government executives was an exercise in futility, which was bound to fail.

According to him, APC is the architect of its own misfortune.

He said that the party should have known that refusing to comply with the provisions of the constitution and the state local government election laws with respect to the notices, processes and procedures of conducting the election was destined to fail.

Ologunagba advised APC in the state not to drag the office of President Bola Tinubu into the matter.

“APC should note that our nation operates a federal system of government, with clearly entrenched devolution of powers among the federating units as well as the various sub-national tiers of government.

“It should, therefore, desist from the fruitless attempt to drag Tinubu and the Federal Government into the issue of local government election.

“Local government election, under the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (as amended), is within the purview of the state and has no connection whatsoever with the federal government,” he said.

Ologunagba said that if APC truly believed in its purported popularity in Osun, it should get ready for local government election, as already scheduled by the State Independent Electoral Commission (OSSIEC).

He condemned the violence and killing of some youths by political thugs on Monday.

He called on the Inspector+General of Police to bring the perpetrators of what he called the heinous crime to book.

The national publicity secretary called on the people of the state to remain calm, law-abiding and get ready for the council elections.

He also commended them for their continued support to Gov. Ademola Adeleke in his delivery of ‘monumental and life-enhancing’ projects and programmes in the state.
