Seven cows belonging to a Fulani herder, identified only as Alhaji Abdullahi, in Elepo village, Ifon, Osun State, were in the early hours of Tuesday struck dead by lightning.

The incident, which reportedly occurred during an early morning rain, threw the village into panic.

The cows were said to have been tethered to a place in the village, when a loud deafening noise was heard around where the animals were kept.

Seven of them were found dead after the incident, though there were more cows on tether at the spot that were not affected.

A resident of Ifon, Alao Saheed, said it was the first time such an incident would occur in the town.

The Seriki Fulani in Osun State, Alhaji Sulaimon Oloruntoyin, confirmed the incident to our correspondent.

  • COVID-19: Osun gov orders total lockdown of four LGAs

COVID-19: Osun gov orders total lockdown of four LGAs

The Governor of Osun State, Mr Gboyega Oyetola on Saturday ordered a total lock of four local government areas in the State to curb community transmission of Coronavirus.

The lockdown directiv e takes effect from July 7, 2020, will affect and affected local government areas are: Ilesa East, Ilesa West, Atakumosa East and Atakumosa West.

The decision of the governor was as a result of the delibration between the government and the traditional leaders from those areas to forestall Community transmission of Coronavirus.

The Commissioner for Information and Civic Orientation, Mrs Funke Egbemode disclosed these, noting that it will be for one week in the first instance. However, if the compliance level is not encouraging, the government will announce the further extension.

The state also said it was closely monitoring other Local Government areas with rising numbers of those testing positive for COVID-19 and may in the days ahead lock down more areas.

However, the relaxation in other areas of the state has been extended by two weeks.

She further said the decision to impose a total lockdown on the four local government areas was aimed at containing the spread of the virus in that axis of the State, noting that government had every reason to believe that it was already witnessing what looked more like a community transmission in the area and as such there was a need to come up with measures to arrest the trend.

The Commissioner stressed that the lockdown would be total. Residents and citizens in that axis will not have the opportunity to go to worship centres and markets during the period. They will only be allowed to shop within their neighbourhood.

“Under the lockdown, there would be no vehicular movement within the affected areas. Only those on essential duties such as health, fire service, environmental officials, security personnel, power and water supply agencies, media and telecommunication officers will be allowed to move.”

Mrs Egbemode also revealed that intra-state travel to and within the affected communities and to other parts of the State is banned during the period of the lockdown, warning that violators of the lockdown order will be severely dealt with.

“As you are all aware, the Federal Government, a few days ago lifted the ban on interstate travel in the country. We have, therefore, lifted ours too. But our relaxation guidelines still subsist except for four local government areas, namely; Ilesa West, Ilesa East, Atakumosa West and Atakumosa East Local Government areas where we have now ordered a one-week lockdown, effective Tuesday, July 7.

“For the avoidance of doubt, our curfew will still run from 9.p.m to 5.a.m daily in other parts of the State, except the locked down LGAs.

“In furtherance to the above, for the other parts of the State, the ban on political, public, religious, and any kind of gatherings under whatever guise remain in force, while worship centres must adhere strictly to government’s guidelines guiding their re-opening. The government will not hesitate to shut down any of the worship centres that violate our guidelines.

“For the four local government areas, all markets will remain shut, only neighbourhood markets and Pharmacies will be allowed to open. There must be strict adherence to stipulated physical distancing, the use of face masks, and observance of all other precautionary measures and established protocols of the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC).

“To this end, we urge citizens and residents of the affected communities to take advantage of the hours between now and Monday to stock up provisions that will last them one week in the first instance.

“We have mandated and mobilised the state’s task force and security operatives to strictly enforce the measures.

“The decision to shut down a part of the state, though painful, is the only way to go if it must curb the spread of the virus in the state,” she added.

A resident of Kano State who sneaked into Osun State tested positive to coronavirus.

The Osun State Government disclosed this in a statement by the Chief Press Secretary to the governor, Mr. Ismail Omipidan on Saturday.

According to the statement, the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Rafiu Isamotu revealed that the new case of Coronavirus recorded in the state sneaked in from Kano State to the Iwo area of the State before his neighbours alerted the Osun COVID-19 team.

He noted that with the new case recorded, it has brought the number of active cases in the State to three.

He said, “The COVID-19 confirmation test for one suspected case came back positive on Friday out of the 14 samples we sent for testing at the NCDC accredited Testing Centre; the African Centre of Excellence for Genomics of Infectious Diseases, Ede during the week. The case sneaked into the State from Kano State and the neighbours immediately alerted our COVID-19 team.

“Presently, we have 3 active cases in the State. The good news is that the new case on arrival self-isolated although wasn’t showing any symptom of the Virus”, he added.

Furthermore, the Commissioner disclosed that a total of 434 tests have been conducted at the NCDC accredited Testing Centre in Ede and that testing was still ongoing.

Isamotu, who said that the State government isn’t resting on its oars in preventing community transmission of the virus, appealed to residents of the State to always be on the alert and immediately report any suspected case of Coronavirus.

He also urged them not to accommodate anyone from outside the State at this time, saying that it is dangerous to do so at the moment.

“I am appealing to all the residents of the State to always be on the alert, take charge and report any suspected case by calling our COVID-19 hotlines. Let us desist from accommodating people in our homes no matter who they are and stop inviting your family and friends to return to the State at this time as this might be dangerous”, Isamotu said.

  • 17 Chinese, 10 Nigerians arrested for illegal mining in Osun

17 Chinese, 10 Nigerians arrested for illegal mining in Osun

The Osun Joint Task Force charged with fighting assorted crimes, has apprehended 27 persons suspected to be illegal miners in the state.

Mr Abdullahi Binuyo, the Deputy Chief of Staff to Gov. Gboyega Oyetola, who disclosed this on Sunday in Osogbo, said that the suspects comprised 17 Chinese nationals and 10 locals.

Binuyo said that the suspects were arrested following a coordinated sting operation in Ilesa and Ife areas of the state.

The official said that government would not fold its arms while its land was being degraded by unauthorised persons.

“Aside the economic leakages, the illegal miners have also polluted the Osun River with poisonous metals, thereby making it unsafe for human consumption and irrigation.

“We intend to prosecute them and also make sure they pay compensation.

“As part of government’s economic reforms, solid mineral is a major sector we are exploring. For these reforms to work, it has become imperative to stop illegal mining and step up enforcement activities. The result is what we are witnessing today.

“These people neither have genuine mining licences nor are they registered with the government.

“What they claim to have is Exploration Licences; that does not permit them to mine the way they are doing.

“So, we will prosecute them and make them pay damages.

“Apart from flouting government’s order to stay at home so as to contain the spread of COVID-19, they have created environmental disaster for us by poisoning our river which is a major public health concern,” he said.

  • Covid-19: Osun raises alarm over influx of northern youths hidden in trailers into State

Covid-19: Osun raises alarm over influx of northern youths hidden in trailers into State

Osun State government on Wednesday night raised the alarm over the influx of Zamfara youths into the state.

The Deputy Chief of Staff to Governor Adegboyega Oyetola, Prince Adeyanju Abdullah Binuyo, who disclosed this in an interview, said the government was aware of the influx but urged the residents not to panic as adequate security measures have been put in place to arrest the situation.

Binuyo further disclosed that all northern youths who came into the state by hiding in trucks carrying essential goods had been tracked down by the government and will immediately be sent back to their home states.

He explained that the government had mandated the Amotekun Corps to effectively man all the entry points and ensure that all trucks bringing essential goods into the state are properly checked and monitored till they offload their goods and immediately escorted out of the state.

According to Binuyo, “Government is aware of a huge influx of non-Osun residents into the state, especially from Zamfara. They were coming majorly through the Ondo axis, accompanying trucks that are carrying food materials purportedly to be sold around the South-West generally.

“The intelligence that we’ve gathered in the last few days is such that they usually have two or a maximum of three people attached to a truck to assist in discharging the goods. But now we have sometimes 10 of them hidden among the goods.

“Sometimes the trucks would stop and drop some of them off along Ife express road where they are received by their fellow northerners already resident in the state.

“The government has been receiving a lot of such reports most especially now that Amotekun has been properly set up. This portends a great danger especially at a time like this when Osun is doing everything to avoid community transmission of COVID-19. This is not the time to be reckless and allow safety or security breaches at our borders.

“The newly inaugurated Amotekun with the support of the police and army have been mandated to identify and man all the entry points, carry out proper checks on the trucks coming in the name of carrying food or relief materials and make sure that anyone found hiding in these trucks are immediately returned to their states.”

The deputy chief of staff maintained that all travel to and from the state remained banned while the land boundaries would “be on lockdown round the clock”, adding that only “food, medical, beverages, petroleum, agriculture and construction supply trucks are exempted but they cannot have more than three persons per truck.”

He assured that adequate security machinery had been put in place to ensure that trucks coming in are offloaded under close watch and immediately escorted out of the state.

Continuing, Binuyo hinted that any security officers found to compromise at any boundary would be made to face the full wrath of the law as a deterrent to others while vehicles caught in violation of the orders would “be forfeited to the state and the passengers prosecuted”.

He said, “as for the officers who compromise the borders, the government and the commissioner of police have agreed that any officer found wanting in this regard will be punished and used as a scapegoat.

  • ‘Double wahala’ in South-West over handling of Buhari’s expired palliative rice, Covid-19 pressures

‘Double wahala’ in South-West over handling of Buhari’s expired palliative rice, Covid-19 pressures

Like the immortal lyrics of Afro legend, Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, ‘double wahala for dead body and the owner of dead body’, some South West governors were at the weekend faced with double jeopardy of handling the burden that comes with supposed expired palliative rice sent to the region by President Muhammadu Buhari-led government while still struggling to contain pressures of curtailing spread of deadly Covid-19.

Recall that TheNewsGuru (TNG) had earlier reported that Oyo State Government would return bags of rice received from the Federal Government, after discovering it is in bad condition.

In the same vein, Ondo State Government has rejected some of the expired bags of rice from the 1,800 bags sent to the state by the Federal Government, while Osun State government claimed that the FG’s palliative rice is presently undergoing quality control checks in the state.

Speaking to newsmen, the Chief Press Secretary (CPS) to Osun State Governor, Mr Ismail Omipidan, acknowledged receiving the rice from the FG but added that it was undergoing “quality control” checks.

Reports reaching TNG is that some of the states in South West governed by All Progressives Congress (APC) have refused to open up on the worrisome state of the FG’s expired palliative rice due to their political affiliation with the Buhari-led government.

Meanwhile, Lagos and Ogun state have commenced distribution of the rice to their people. In Lagos, one Iyabo Johnson raised an allegation on Twitter that she got an expired rice from the government, but the report has since been refuted by Governor Jide Sanwo-Olu.

The story in Ondo is similar to that of Oyo:

Governor, Mr Rotimi Akeredolu, has ordered the return of some bags of rice sent to the state by the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management as they were found to have expired.

Speaking on the development, the Secretary of the state palliative committee, Mr Alex Kalejaiye, confirmed that some of the bags of rice had expired and were no longer fit for consumption.

According to him, the bad rice will be separated from the good ones and the good ones will be taken to the laboratory to ascertain if they were fit for human consumption.

He said, “We discovered that some of the bags have expired and not good for consumption at all, so we are separating them from the ones that are still manageable for consumption. After this, we will still take the ones that appear good to the laboratory to test if they are fit for consumption.”

It was gathered that when it was discovered that some of the rice had expired, the governor reportedly ordered that they should be rejected.

Akeredolu, who officially received the palliative items at the Government House ground, Alagbaka from the state coordinating unit of the Youths Empowerment and Social Support Operations, last week, was said to have expressed displeasure over the development.

Kalejaiye said, “They brought many bags of rice, we just carried out a random check on them to discover the ones that are not good. What we are trying to do is to separate those ones that appeared bad from those ones that appeared good then we will carry out laboratory tests on them to ascertain whether they are safe for consumption before giving them out to our people.

“Some are expired, it is even written on the bags but some are not expired but it seemed they were not properly stored, and those ones are not properly stored would not be good to be given to our people without carrying out the laboratory test.

“We will separate the extremely bad ones from the rest and we will carry out the laboratory test on those ones that appear good, to ascertain how safe they are for consumption. But the extremely bad ones, we don’t even need to do a test on them, we will return them.

“We will meet tomorrow (today) to decide when to return them, you know we can’t do it without the consent of Mr Governor.”

  • COVID-19 Lockdown: Police dismiss officers assaulting woman in Osun

The Nigeria Police Force on Friday said it has dismissed two officers who assaulted a woman at the Odo Ori Market, Iwo Osun State.

The police said the dismissal of the officers – Inspector Ikuesan Taiwo and Constable Abass Ibrahim – was preceded by a trial where they were found guilty of assaulting the woman.

“They have been dismissed from the Force. They will be arraigned in court for prosecution,” the police said.

The duo attached to Iwo Division of Osun State Police Command were seen assaulting a woman at the Odo Ori Market, Iwo, Osun State, in a video in early April.

The victim identified as Azeez Tola had claimed that she was out to buy drugs but Ikuesan turned a deaf ear to her plea.

In the video, the police officers interrogated the woman on an unknown issue and soon began pulling her by the clothes she wore.

Taiwo and Ibrahim continuously flogged the woman with canes amidst pleas by sympathisers to stop the assault.

The video generated a renewed call by Nigerians for the government to restructure and re-orientate police officers who have been found culpable of illegal arrest, abuse, extortion, and extrajudicial killing of Nigerians on many occasions.

  • Osun warns private hospitals against admitting COVID-19 patients

The Osun State Government has warned private hospitals to stop admitting and treating suspected or confirmed coronavirus patients.

Information and Civic Orientation Commissioner Mrs Funke Egbemode handed down the warning on Thursday, saying anyone caught flouting the order would be prosecuted.

Egbemode said the government had accredited health facilities with required personnel to treat suspected and confirmed COVID-19 patients.

“The state government of Osun has reiterated that private hospitals… are not allowed to treat COVID-19 patients, whether suspected or confirmed.

“The state has recognised, accredited… government facilities with the required personnel to take care of patients, whether suspected or confirmed, at its isolation and care centres. Testing and treatment are free in all government facilities,” she said.

The commissioner noted that attempt to treat COVID-19 patients in private facilities would only open the state to community infections and negate the sacrifices the people had made so far.
