Defection: 5 governors receive Gbenga Daniel into APC

Former Governor of Ogun, Gbenga Daniel on Tuesday officially defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC), barely two years after quitting the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Daniel, Director-General, Atiku Abubakar Presidential Campaign Organisation in the last presidential election, had in March, 2019 officially resigned from the PDP, saying he was pulling out from partisan politics.

The former governor had since not joined any political party officially, but had openly endorsed Gov. Dapo Abiodun of Ogun, then governorship candidate of the All Progressives Candidate (APC) during the 2019 gubernatorial election in the state.

He was received into APC at his Asoludero residence, Sagamu, by Gov. Abiodun, Ondo State Governor- Rotimi Akeredolu, Atiku Bagudu (Kebbi), Kano State Governor, Abdullahi Ganduje and Niger State Governor, Abubakar Bello.

Bello, who is Chairman of APC Registration and Revalidation Committee, presented broom, a symbol of APC, to Daniel to formally welcome him into the party.

He disclosed that the National Chairman of APC Caretaker Committee, Mai Mala Buni, and Bagudu, would be formally presenting Daniel to President Muhammadu Buhari.

In his remarks, Bagudu, Chairman of APC Governors, described Daniel as a political colossus with outstanding political ideology.

He said APC had grown bigger and better with his defection, adding that the party was happy to receive him.

Akeredolu described Daniel’s defection as homecoming and urged leaders of APC in the state to come together to build and make the party stronger.

Responding, Daniel said the decision to join APC was well considered and thought out.

He explained that Nigeria needed leaders to come together and speak with one voice in order to tackle challenges.

“In Ogun, no better time because we have a working governor and needs support of all,” Daniel said.

In his remarks, Gov. Abiodun described Daniel’s defection as historic, saying that he supported his governorship election.

“Daniel will add a lot of value to our party. We are a party, not a social club, before joining us today, his advanced party has joined us, we expected more people to join us before the end of the registration and revalidation exercise,” he said.

Otunba Gbenga Daniel, the campaign manager of Atiku Abubakar has decamped from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Daniel, who is a former Governor of Ogun State was a front row member of the PDP having led the campaign team that saw the defeat of presidential candidate Atiku.

“I thought I should quickly brief the house before the news go viral” – Gbenga Daniel.

In a statement, Daniel apologised to his former party for the short notice, stating that his support for Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, was a pointer.

He explained that the decision took a speedy curve with the request of the national caretaker Chairman of APC to visit him along with three governors.

The statement reads: “Dear Friends & Colleagues, pardon my short notice in informing you of my route to the APC which as you might have suspected started with my supporting Governor Dapo Abiodun during the last election.

“I have since experienced an avalanche of encouragement to come on board.

“However in the last 48 hours things took a dizzying speed with the decision of the APC National Chairman’s request to visit me at Asoludero on Wed with about 3 Governors.

“While planning for the visit, Governor Abiodun also decided to visit me later today with another set of Governors. It, therefore, means that I have finally been ‘captured’

“I thought I should quickly brief the house before the news go viral. Thanks for your understanding”.

  • Travel ban: Fani-Kayode reacts, reveals why he can’t travel out of Nigeria

Former Aviation Minister, Femi Fani-Kayode has reacted to President Muhammadu Buhari’s Executive Order 6 banning him, Atiku Abubakar’s campaign Director General, a dead Chief Judge, and 48 others from travelling out of the country.
TheNewsGuru (TNG) reports Buhari signed Executive Order 6 banning Fani-Kayode; Atiku’s campaign DG, Otunba Gbenga Daniel; late Chief Judge of Enugu State, Justice Professor I.A Umezulike, and a host of others from travelling abroad for alleged corrupt practices.
The list was generated from cases and proceedings filed by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), the Nigeria Police, and 17 other agencies. The watch-list and restriction were put in place pending the conclusion of the cases against those affected.
“I could not give a damn that my name is on the list of 50 members of the opposition and prominent Nigerians that have been placed on a travel ban because nothing that Buhari does surprises me.
“I have not left Nigeria since 2008 because my passport has been with the EFCC and the courts for the last 10 years and they have refused to give it to me and let me to travel. Those on the travel-ban list that need to travel abroad for medical reasons or to see their loved ones are the ones I feel sorry for.
“For me, travel ban or no travel ban, I have no intention of leaving Nigeria anytime soon because I am one of those that will be on the forefront in the struggle to liberate our country and ensure that we get Buhari out of power over the next few months,” Fani-Kayode stated on Sunday.
Explaining the government’s action in a statement on Saturday, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Mallam Garba Shehu said, “Following the instant judicial affirmation of the constitutionality and legality of the Executive Order 6 (EO6), President Muhammadu Buhari has mandated the Attorney-General of the Federation and the Minister of Justice to implement the Order in full force.
“To this end, a number of enforcement procedures are currently in place by which the Nigeria Immigration Service and other security agencies have placed no fewer than 50 high profile persons directly affected by EO6 on watch-list and restricted them from leaving the country pending the determination of their cases.”
A top government official, who reportedly spoke to The Nation newspaper in confidence, said there is no cause for alarm on E06.
The source said: “The ban is not different from the conditions given by the court in granting these accused persons bail. The E06 is like a codification of steps to prevent those on trial for alleged corrupt practices from tampering with assets.
“Some of these accused persons used to go to court for permission before they can travel out of the country. The E06 is not a new thing but instead of all agencies working at cross-purposes, a list was generated and backed with the Executive Order.
“Some of those on trial, especially the Politically Exposed Persons (PEPs) had been selling their assets. What will they return after being convicted?”
