Ovie of Uvwie blames politicians for communal crisis

Delta State Monarch, the Ovie of Uvwie Kingdom, HRM Emmanuel Ekemejewan Sideso, Abe 1, JP. OON who recently led his chiefs and others to 10km walk for sustain peace in his community has said persistent interference from political office holders in traditional administration in the “guise of security or governor says” is undermining the sustain peace in Uvwie local government council.

The Uvwie Monarch who spoke at the weekend at the grand finale of activities to mark his 15th year coronation anniversary stressed that “the political class must be aware that the traditional institution is to complement them in a mutual or bio-synthetic relationship”

“We both need each other. We are not in rivalry or competitive position. The peace and progress or Uvwie Kingdom depends on very cordial good relationship of traditional institution and the political class”

In the address, HRM Sideso spoke on the interregnum in Uvwie  Kingdom before his ascension and his five point agenda which he said he had successfully executed.

They included building a permanent palace, educating the teeming youths through provision of scholarships, restructuring of the traditional administrative system, preservation of acceptable traditional practices and culture, restoration of peace throughout Uvwie Kingdom and building of peace throughout the kingdom as well as a sense of unity, belonging and integration among the people and neighbours in particular

He said as at 2022/2023 academic session, “we have a total of 1,500 beneficiaries in the scholarship scheme and disburse an average of N4.76m every academic session to beneficiaries

“Apart from the yearly scholarship award, we also intervene in assisting indigenes in special professional areas. We have successfully trained a female pilot in her type-rating course abroad and currently flying with a private airline in the country

“We are in search of young Uvwie graduates in surveying profession that we can assist to acquire more degrees and professional qualification. He expressed appreciation to Governor Ifeanyi Okowa who had been assisting in the Education and Scholarship scheme with donation of N5m yearly for the past five years and appealed to the incoming government to continue to fund the scheme.

The monarch explained that in view of the increasing population, the emergence of new settlements and the opening up of more lands to socio-economic activities, it became necessary to increase the four administrative units(etches) from four to nine with the approval of the state government

The current administrative units are, Alegbor, Ogbe, Ekpan, Ugbomro, Erovie, Ugboroke, Ovwori, Oriokpor and Ohorhe

Abe 1 however,  regretted the denigration of Uvwie communal value system and norms due to greed, selfishness and avarice. “We have lost our value system which include communication, respect for elders and constituted authorities, love for one another and hard work.

He urged a return to the past and restoration of Uvwie past glory. “We must shun disobedience, lack of respect and remain humble always, the values for which Uvwie people were known.

Don makes case for preservation of the Uvwie language

Prof. Roseline Oro Aziza, a former Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration) of Delta State University (DELSU), Abraka has called on native speakers of the Uvwie language spoken majorly in Delta State, Nigeria to make efforts at preserving the language.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports Prof. Aziza made the call during the 15th Coronation anniversary of the Ovie of Uvwie, HRM Dr. Emmanuel E. Sideso, Abe I, JP, OON, while stressing on some consequences if the Uvwie language should go extinct.

According to Aziza, language is a characteristic factor that distinguishes one society from another, the custodian of a people’s culture and tradition and a means by which they identify themselves.

Prof. Aziza said: “A child’s native language is called his ‘mother tongue’ not for want of adequate vocabulary but to emphasize the unique role the mother plays in helping the child become integrated into his society physically, mentally and psychologically.

“In Uvwie as well as most communities in Urhoboland today, Pidgin is the lingua franca and, while the elders have Uvwie as their mother tongue, the youth have Pidgin and English as theirs. Useful as Pidgin is for everyday communication purposes, it does not carry a culture with it.

“Since language controls the thought process, the value systems of parents and the youth differ. Therefore, when parents contrast present youth behaviour with their own youth, they consider the change a crumbling of cherished values.

“But they forget that they have contributed to the unacceptable youth behaviour by not sufficiently exposing their children to their language and culture during their formative years”.

Speaking further on Wednesday during a colloquium held at the PTI conference centre, Effurun, as part of activities to mark the 15th Coronation anniversary of the Ovie of Uvwie, Aziza decried the disparity in the number of Uvwie males and females in DELSU.

According to her, in the 2019/2020 academic session, there were 165 female Uvwie students and 79 males in DELSU. In the 2020/2021 session, she disclosed there were 198 females and 103 males, and 237 females and 113 males in the 2021/2022 academic session.

“Much as the data above favours the girls/women, it is a wake up call to parents and other stakeholders that boys/men need to be encouraged to take education more seriously. The SDG policy of ‘Leaving No One Behind’ must apply here.

“The slogan, SCHOOL IS A SCAM often heard from boys should be discouraged. I stand here to refute it in its entirety. It is common knowledge that education reforms and transforms the individual. An educated mechanic or plumber can never be the same as the uneducated one,” Aziza stressed.

We are not happy – Delta monarch, Ovie of Uvwie tells Osinbajo

The Ovie of Uvwie, Dr Emmanuel Sideso (Abe I) has used the opportunity of the visit of Vice President Yemi Osinbajo to his palace to express displeasure over the issue of constitutional role for the traditional rulers that was not considered by the National Assembly.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports Vice President Osinbajo was in Delta State for the thanksgiving Mass of late Chief Patrick Ideh, a renowned legal practitioner and nationalist who passed away at the age of 95.

The thanksgiving Mass was held at the Mother of The Redeemer Catholic Church, Effurun, Warri.

After the Mass, the vice president, accompanied by Delta Deputy Governor, Kingsley Otuaro, paid courtesy visits to the palaces of the Ovie of Uvwie Kingdom, and Olu of Warri, Ogiame Atuwatse III.

Receiving the vice president in his palace, Sideso thanked Osinbajo for his respect for traditional rulers.

He, however, said that traditional rulers in the country are not happy that the issue of constitutional role for the traditional rulers was not considered by the National Assembly.

“You have always been there for us; I am the Chairman of the National Traditional Rulers Summit in Abuja.

“The last summit we held, you represented the president; you physically came and stayed with us throughout the summit.

“On behalf of the traditional rulers in the whole country, we are appealing to you and the president to look at this again; I don’t think it is too late to look at it and perhaps call us and advice us on why it cannot be done at the moment.

“We are the grassroots people; and if there is any problem, you people come to us and seek our prayers because you are our children,’’ he said.

He urged the vice president to intervene in the quest for a constitutional role for the traditional institution.

In his response, Osinbajo said he was in the kingdom to honour late Chief Ideh who is an illustrious son.

The vice president said he is hopeful that the National Assembly would eventually attend to the question of constitutional role for traditional rulers.

“But I think that there is a genuine desire by traditional rulers to be more intricately involved; to be more directly involved in governance and government in Nigeria.

“And just going by the track record that we see even in this kingdom, it is very evident that your role has been instrumental in keeping the peace here.

“So, I think traditional rulership is so important in keeping law and order and in maintaining peace in all of our communities.’’

At the palace of Olu of Warri, Osinbajo congratulated Atuwatse for ascending to the throne of his fathers.

He said the traditional institution has a vital role to play in addressing the security challenges in the country.

“As you know, coming into office, we had on top of our agenda, as the president stated, the economy, security, governance, and corruption.

“The role of the traditional council, the traditional rulership in our country is critical to security; absolutely critical and I am happy that this is something that you also, not only recognises, but accept as a major function of the traditional rulership.’’

Osinbajo said that he and the deputy governor had worked extensively in some of the conflicts in oil producing communities that had led to a decline in oil production.

He said that they were able to achieve results by going round to speak to various communities.

“We want to see that security challenges; oil theft and some of what we are seeing in the Delta and in many of our oil producing communities are swiftly brought to an end,’’ he said.

Atuwatse had earlier in his welcome remarks, said that Osinbajo’s visit was divine as it coincided with the end of the week the kingdom visited Itsekiri communities in other parts of Nigeria, including Ogun and Kogi States.

According to him, there is an affinity between Itsekiri people and Osinbajo as the vice president is their in-law through his marriage to late Chief Obafemi Awolowo’s granddaughter.

In response to the vice president’s remarks, Atuwase said that traditional rulers were committed to ensuring security and unhindered oil production.

“I am very happy that our deputy governor is here and will bear witness to our commitment to not only security in this axis but in ensuring that the oil production here does not dwindle, especially now with global events – oil is now approaching US$120 per barrel.

“And Nigeria has to, as much as it can, benefit from that development; not quite long ago, we did something unprecedented.

“Traditional rulers are here to ensure that they are bridge builders between government and the people.

“We have committed ourselves to ensuring that where we had a hitch in Ogidigben — where the production was shut down, we have committed ourselves to making sure that not only are things restored but the International Oil Companies (IOCs) commitment to the community, which as the cause of the breakdown, is finally resolved.’’

He said he is willing to collaborate with the Federal Government in ensuring lasting peace and transforming the Niger-Delta region.

“Please, let the president know that once there is anything that resembles a security situation, he can call on us and he has our full cooperation,’’ Atuwatse said.
