HPV vaccine preventing cancer not reducing population – Dr Olatunji

Contrary to insinuations in public domain,  the Government of Oyo state has sensitized the public on the importance of the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) vaccine, saying it is not in anyway harmful or an avenue to reduce population of Africa.

Dr Muideen Olatunji, the Executive Secretary of Oyo State Primary Healthcare Board, emphasized the importance of the HPV while addressing a press conference on Monday.

Olatunji, while addressing the journalists at the event held in Ibadan, the state capital, said that the state has launched the HPV Vaccine into the Extended Programme on Immunization (EPI) targeting girls between 9-14 years of age in the state.

He described cervical cancer as one of the most common forms of cancer that affects women, stressing that the disease must be tackled head-long.

According to him, the vaccine was produced so as to prevent the disease and not to reduce the population.

Olatunji while speaking further, maintained that the government has launched the programme at St. Paul Anglican Primary School, Yanbule, Bashorun and over 300 pupils have been vaccinated.

Olatunji said, “It is pertinent to reiterate that the vaccine is not designed to reduce the population of the state. This is a demonstration of our continued partnership and indeed, collective efforts to protect young girls and citizens of the state against the prevalence of cervical cancer disease.

“Cervical cancer is a serious, and second most fatal cancer that affects women especially females of productive age.

“However, it’s important to note that Cervical cancer is a preventable disease, which can be controlled through routine human papilloma virus (HPV) vaccine.

“We have trained and retrained those that will administer this vaccine, and there are supervisors who will regularly take measures of safety and there are measures put in place to checkmate the administration of these vaccines. We have a structure in place to reach every part of Oyo State.

“We want to make sure no one is left out in this vaccination, for this reason we must utilize the opportunity as critical stakeholders to significantly reduce the prevalence of this disease to protect the lives of our citizens, particularly young girls between the ages of 9 and 14.

Cervical cancer globally accounts for a huge number of deaths and is the fourth among the cancers that kill women in the world. HPV which causes cervical cancer is preventable, so what we are doing is cost-effective, and safe so that we don’t have to wait for treatment or management when cancer has set it. Prevention is better than treatment and cure.”

Fresh Igangan attacks carried out by Customs officials not gunmen – Oyo Government

Oyo State Government says men of the Nigeria Custom Service raided Igangan and other parts of Ibarapa areas of the state on Friday night, not unknown gunmen.
Mr Taiwo Adisa, the Chief Press Secretary to Gov. Seyi Makinde, said in a statement on Saturday in Ibadan, that this was contrary to the widely circulated report that unknown gunmen had, again, attacked the areas.
Adisa said that the revelation was made known by Ibarapa Community leaders during a fact-finding meeting between a team of the state government and political/traditional leaders of the affected communities on Saturday.
According to him, the state government team was led by Mr Sunday Odukoya, the Executive Assistant on Security Matters to the governor.
“The political and traditional leaders of Ibarapa extraction at the meeting, described the Friday raid on Igangan, Igbo-Ora and other communities in the area by men of the NCS, as unnecessary and not well-thought-out.
“They called on the leadership of Custom Service to regulate operations of its personnel.
“It will be better if the authorities restrict them to border towns to end unwarranted attacks on innocent communities,” Adisa said.
The governor’s media aide said that Odukoya, who led the state government team to the meeting, had called for vigilance and calm among the people.
He said that police in the areas had confirmed the death of one Amotekun operative and two other persons, following the said raid.
The team, accompanied by the traditional rulers and community leaders, visited scene of the incident at Igangan, Ayete, Tapa, and Igbo-Ora.
The leaders, included the Olu of Igbo-Ora, Oba Jimoh Titiloye and the Chairman of Ibarapa North Local Government, Mr Adeoye Adedoyin.

    …Protesters storm Fresh FM building

Popular musician and Chief Executive Officer of a private radio station, Fresh FM 109.5 in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, Yinka Ayefela, has sued the state government for its planned demolition of his Music House, the building housing the radio station.

The building is located on the Lagos-Ibadan by-pass in Challenge area of Ibadan.

According to officials of the station, the property is valued at over N800m.

The government marked the building for demolition for allegedly contravening the state’s planning laws.

But Ayefele, in a statement on Wednesday, said the demolition notice was a witch-hunt.

He sued the government at a State High Court in Ibadan, seeking an order restraining the government from demolishing the property, pending the determination of the suit.

In an ex parte motion, Ayefele’s lawyer Olayinka Bolanlen said due process was followed in the construction of the structure.

The lawyer said approvals were obtained from the state’s relevant departments and agencies.

But Justice Iyabo Yerima ordered the claimant to ensure service of the court process on the respondent.

The judge held that there were “serious issues to be determined” in the suit filed.

She adjourned the matter till August 20 for hearing of the ex parte motion.

Also, a crowd of sympathisers and Fresh FM fans yesterday besieged the station in solidarity with the popular musician.

Carrying placards with various inscriptions, such “Obey rule of law”; “Fresh FM must stand”, among others, the protesters pleaded with the state government to shelf the demolition plan.

They praised the station as a “credible source of up-to-date information” on developments in the country and the state.
