Ibadan building collapse: Oyo govt. to investigate, sanction culprits

The Commissioner for Lands and Housing in Oyo State, Mr Olusegun Olayiwola, says the state government will investigate the cause of the collapse of a four-story building at Bodija area of Ibadan that occurred on Thursday morning.

Olayiwola said this when he led some government functionaries to the scene of the incident.

He said erring person or persons would be fully sanctioned after investigation, to serve as deterrent to others.

Speaking with newsmen during the inspection, the commissioner observed that substandard materials were used for the construction.

He noted that land allocated for the building project was not suitable for the kind of structure being built.

Olayiwola added that the contractor handling the project failed to follow established procedures for constructing buildings in the state.

The commissioner promised to present the Ministry’s findings to the deputy governor for necessary action.

He, however, enjoined developers in the state to always engage the services of professionals whenever they wanted to construct buildings, in order to avoid disaster.

Newsmen report that the structure under construction collapsed in the early hours of Thursday, leaving at least seven persons injured.

“This is a testament to the conducive learning environment and harmonious relationship between the stakeholders in University of Ibadan, I dare say Sir, that if not for the discordant relationship between the council and management of my own University, University of Lagos, we would have given University of Ibadan a run for it in the global ranking.

COVID-19: UCH denies receiving N118m from Oyo govt.

The University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan, has debunked the claim by the Oyo State Government that it gave the hospital N118 million to fight the COVID-19 pandemic.

The spokesman of UCH, Mr Toye Akinrinlola, refuted the claim in a statement issued on Tuesday in Ibadan.

“The attention of the management of the University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan, has been drawn to the content of a press release from the Oyo State Government that the sum of N118 million was given to the hospital to fight against the COVID 19 pandemic.

“The press release quoted the Oyo State Commissioner for Finance, Mr Akinola Ojo, as saying the said amount was released to UCH.

“We contacted some officials of Oyo State for a clarification on this, but it seems there is a misunderstanding in the difference between the College of Medicine of the University of Ibadan and the University College Hospital Ibadan.

“It therefore behoves the management of the UCH to put the record straight.

“We hereby state emphatically that the University College Hospital, Ibadan, did not and has not received any monetary donation from the Oyo State Government,” he said.

Akinrinlola said that the only aid the hospital had received from the state government in the fight against the pandemic was 250 Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).

He said that all services rendered by the hospital against the dreaded virus were strictly humanitarian.

“The Chief Medical Director of the UCH is a member of the Oyo State COVID 19 Taskforce.

“He should know if any money was given to UCH outside the 250 pieces of the PPE given to the hospital.

“All other services rendered to Oyo State by UCH have been strictly humanitarian and no financial benefits have accrued to the hospital.

“The UCH has been able to cope with the rigours of the pandemic through donations from the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) which is an organ of the Federal Government; some corporate bodies, well meaning Nigerians, alumni associations of the hospital, staff and students of the hospital.

“I therefore wish to say once again that the UCH is not in receipt of any N118million as claimed by the Oyo State Government,” the spokesman said.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Oyo State Government had on Monday told newsmen that it had spent N2.77 billion in the ongoing fight against the pandemic.

…I was harassed by a pastor while sealing one of the churches – Commissioner

The Oyo State Government over the weekend said it sealed three churches in the state for violating environmental laws government’s prescribed noise level.

The Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Chief Isaac Ishola, who supervised the sealing of the churches said he was harassed by the General Overseer of a new generation church while attempting to seal off the church for violating environmental laws.

The commissioner said the General Overseer allegedly molested, harassed and insulted him on the church premises to prevent the sealing of the church.

He noted that the ministry would no longer tolerate what he called the impunity among religious bodies that were fond of exceeding the prescribed noise level.

Ishola said: “…I was insulted and harassed (at the weekend) by a pastor, the owner of one of the sealed churches. He refused to comply with the state noise regulations. The pastor refused to attend a meeting when called. In fact, the pastor came out, pounced on me and said I could not seal the church because if I did, it would close my destiny. And I told him that I am a Christian too, but ‘you cannot use Christianity to disturb the peace’ of others…”

The commissioner urged religious bodies to remove speakers mounted on their buildings, saying doing so violated government’s laws regulating noise in the environment.

According to him, anybody who refuses to comply will be arrested and the premises sealed, in line with the laws regulating noise in the state.
