We’ll build greater, prosperous Nigeria – Peter Obi

The Labour Party (LP) Presidential Candidate, Mr Peter Obi, has assured Nigerians of a greater and prosperous nation if elected as the country’s next president in February 2023.

He gave the assurance during the party’s presidential campaign held at the Lekan Salami Sports Complex in Ibadan on Wednesday.

The former governor of Anambra State was the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Vice Presidential candidate in 2019 election and now Labour Party Presidential candidate.

Obi was accompanied by his running mate, Datti Baba-Ahmed, Chief Ayo Adebanjo, Mr Julius Abure, the LP National Chairman and LP governorship candidate in Oyo State, Alhaji Tawfiq Akinwale.

Obi said the party was prepared to form a government that would build a greater Nigeria and move the nation’s economy from consumption to production.

The LP presidential candidate said that his government if elected, would create jobs for unemployed youths and fight corruption.

“Myself and Datti Baba-Ahmed are wealth creators not wealth sharers. We will secure and unite Nigeria.

“We will ensure there is no strike in our universities. We will create enabling society. We will turn the vast arable land into agricultural land to feed Nigerians.

“We will turn Lagos to the financial centre of Africa,” he said.

Obi appreciated Adebanjo and Afenifere, the Pan Yoruba Socio-Cultural group, for their unflinching support as well as their strong commitment to equity and justice.

He said that the presidency is for Nigeria and not some sections of the country, saying that he stood for equity and justice.

The Afenifere leader, who recalled the pre and post-independence celebration and agitations, said the clamour for restructuring was aimed at returning the country to true federalism.

Adebanjo said that he had no hatred for the APC Presidential candidate, Bola Tinubu, as being rumoured, saying he stood by him throughout his eight years as Lagos State governor.

He said that all he was clamouring for is equity and justice, saying tribes in the country deserved equal opportunities.

“When we brought Chief M.K.O Abiola and his election was annulled, they brought Chief Olusegun Obasanjo. We agreed that the presidency would be rotational.

“Obasanjo handed over to Umar Yar’Adua and from him to Goodluck Jonathan. Later Buhari became the president,’’ Adebanjo said.

He urged the people to vote for Obi, saying it was time of the Igbos.

The LP National Chairman, Mr Julius Abure,  thanked the people of South-West for their usual support and pacesetting status always.

He said that the country was going through numerous challenges, saying that Obi was the only presidential candidate that had answers to change Nigeria.

Akinwale and Mr Atayese Sodiq, the State LP Chairman in their separate remarks, called on the people of the state to vote for the party’s candidates at all levels

Adebanjo presented Obi to the people by raising his hands at the event attended by Dr Doyin Okupe and other prominent Nigerians.

SAD: 27-year-old housewife stabs husband to death over sex

Police in Oyo State paraded a 27-year-old housewife before newsmen in Ibadan on Wednesday for allegedly stabbing her husband to death over sex demand.

Police spokesman in the state, SP Adewale Osifeso, said the housewife stabbed her husband with a knife on the chest leading to his death.

Osifeso said the stabbing took place on Nov. 16 at the couple’s residence at Oko-Oba, Oyo town, when the deceased attempted to have sexual intercourse with his wife who resisted the move.

He explained that the resistance led to a struggle between the deceased and the suspect during which he collected and smashed the wife’s phone on the ground.

In retaliation, the suspect went for a knife and stabbed the deceased in the chest resulting in his death.

Osifeso added that the deceased and the suspect returned to their home on the same day of the incident after three months of separation as a result of a misunderstanding.

He said the suspect had confessed to the crime and would be charged in court at the completion of investigation.

The suspect was one of 25 other paraded over allegations of murder, armed robbery, burglary, stealing, cultism, kidnap and conspiracy.

Police also paraded nine suspected cultists who were armed with guns, cutlasses and other dangerous weapon with the intention to unleash mayhem on members of Ilupeju community on New Oyo- Ogbomoso Expressway.

Osifeso said the cultists were arrested on Nov. 5 after credible anti-crime surveillance and intelligence report.

He said items recovered from the suspects includes two locally-made gun, two lives cartridges, one facemask, two Bajaj motorcycles and one Mazda bus.

No fewer than five armed robbery suspects were also paraded by the command and recovery of two locally made guns.

Also on parade were five armed robbery suspects who had been terrorising the people of Oyo town.

Osifeso also told newsmen that Commissioner of Police in the state, Mr Adebowale Williams, has appealed against the destruction of campaign billboards and posters and incitement of violence as the 2023 general elections approach.

  • Angry mob lynches transport union leader for killing teenager in Oyo state

Angry mob lynches transport union leader for killing teenager in Oyo state

The Ibarapa Central Local Government Area of Oyo State,  was thrown into pandemonium after a transport chief, Jamiu Sego, was beaten to death by angry mob in the area.

The incident was reported to have happened in the Igboora community  of the state.

It was gathered that his killers also set sego’s corpse ablaze after he was beaten to death.

Trouble started after a stray bullet from Sego’s gun killed a yet-to-be-identified teenager and injured two other victims in the area.

The Director of Media and Publicity for the APC in Ibarapa Central and North LGAs, Adesina Adeyemo, in his reaction to the incident, said Sego’s death was not linked to billboard destruction in the area.

They also alleged that Sego was a member of the Park Management System in the state.

The Director of Media and Publicity for the APC in Ibarapa Central and North LGAs, Adesina Adeyemo, in his reaction to the incident, said Sego’s death was not linked to billboard destruction in the area.

He said Sego was attempting to collect money from motorcyclists in the area when an argument ensued between him and a motorcyclist, adding that the argument degenerated.

Adeyemo said, “The event happened around a market place and that was where the guy was killed. The guy in question (Sego) used to collect rates from motorcyclists for the Oyo State Government. It was in the process of forcing one of the motorcyclists to pay the rate on Saturday that an argument ensued between them.

“In the process, the guy (Sego) brought out a gun and threatened to shoot the motorcyclist. As he (motorcyclist) was dragging the gun with him, a stray bullet hit a small boy that was moving around and the boy died.

“The death of the boy triggered peoples’ anger and they ran after him, beat him mercilessly, killed and set his corpse ablaze.”

The spokesperson for the PMS in the state, Emiola Jelili,  in a statement, said Sego was not a member of the agency, adding that people linking the body to the incident were doing so to smear the image of the body and its leaders.

The statement said, “As regards the news reports flying around about the death of one Jamiu Sego, who was killed and burnt to death yesterday morning at Igboora, linking the deceased to the Park Management System, it has become necessary for us as an organisation to debunk such reports by unverified news outlets as false and a part of the malicious attempt by agents of darkness to continually smear the image of the body and its leaders.

“We state in clear terms that Jamiu (Sego) was never a member of the PMS and neither did he head any unit of the PMS while alive. We have already distanced ourselves from the destruction of billboards and defacing posters of politicians.

“In fact, we already stated that members of the PMS have been charged with the responsibility of protecting every billboard erected in the state as we believe in the principles of democracy and a levelled playing field.

“Finally, we call on the police and other security operatives to carry out a thorough investigation so as to fish out those involved in the killing and lynching of the deceased.”

The police in the state is yet to comment on the incident.

  • Jimoh faults Gov Makinde for appointing another Babaloja-General

Jimoh faults Gov Makinde for appointing another Babaloja-General

Alhaji Sunmaila Jimoh, who claimed to have been the elected Babaloja-General of Oyo State, says the purported approval of Alhaji Yekini Abass as another Babaloja-General by Gov. Seyi Makinde, is illegal and contemptuous.

Jimoh told newsmen on Saturday in Ibadan, that he had earlier been elected by traders in accordance with the Trade Union Act, while Abass was installed by the late Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Saliu Adetunji.

Makinde had on Friday through the State Commissioner for Trade and Industry, Mr Bayo Lawal, appointed Abass as the Babaloja-General of the state.

The action had become a subject of litigation with the Jimoh group securing a court judgment against Abass, restraining him from parading himself as the Babaloja-General.

Jimoh said he would remain calm and unmoved, adding that the power to decide who should be appointed as Babaloja-General of Oyo State resides with the traders.

He said that such power does not reside in the executive nor legislative arms of the government.

“There is a judgment by the Oyo State High Court, which stopped Alhaji Yekini Abass, from parading himself or be addressed as the Babaloja-General of Oyo State.

“This judgment has yet to be vacated by any competent court in Nigeria, hence, it is constitutionally valid and binding on him.

“This action in question is nothing, but gross disrespect for the law.

“Nothing is strange or new in the decision made today by the government, it shows some governor’s aides have no regard for the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria,” Jimoh said.

He promised that the issue would be wisely and constitutionally handled to expose the truth to the governor, saying that all manipulations as well as injustices would end in futility.

“We are traders, our associations are registered with the Corporate Affairs Commission under the Law of the land.

“We are not government agencies and no appointee of the government has legal right to determine who should be installed as Babaloja-General.

“Should there be any ambiguity in the judgment of the court, the parties should be advised to return to court for better interpretation,” he said.

Jimoh said that the advisory council is a government agency and could not speak for over two million traders.

He said that the traders had demanded for the dissolution of the council more than twice for lack of integrity and moral justification.

“I want everyone to know that this display of lawlessness was initiated and launched by Bayo Lawal. He has arrogated unconstitutional and unjust powers to himself in the Makinde’s administration.

“The reason behind all these illegalities and unlawfulness being done against traders now in Oyo State, is the 2023 general elections,” he said.

Jimoh said that traders were not politicians, but group of people struggling to raise capital for their businesses, adding no one could induce, intimidate nor harass any trader for political reason.

He appealed to traders in the state to remain calm and abstain from whatever could lead to breakdown of laws and orders in the state.

Jimoh said that traders in the state are highly discipline and responsible individuals who respect Nigerian Constitution as well as the judiciary.

Makinde had on Friday appointed Alhaji Yekini Abass Oladapo popularly known as Y.K Abass, as the First Babaloja-General in the state.

This followed his nomination as the first Babaloja-General by the state Market Leaders’ Council at its meeting, held on Sept.27.

Chief Bayo Lawal, the state Commissioner for Trade, Industry, Investment and Cooperatives, presenting the certificate, said that due process was followed as dictated by the Court of Law in appointing the Babaloja-General.

“The issue before us today has started since 2013, that is the appointment of Babaloja- General of Oyo State, but I will say that am glad that with the help of God, and also that of my Principal, His Excellency, Seyi Makinde, we are able to achieve the seemingly unachievable.

“And today, despite all the crises, we are able to follow the due process as dictated by the court and judgment interpreted by the Ministry of Justice, we are able to produce Babaloja- General of Oyo State,” Lawal said.

In his acceptance speech, Abass had expressed gratitude to Almighty God for making it possible for him to be the Babaloja-General, thanking Makinde for supporting him.

He promised to use his wealth of experience to the growth of the markets, economy of the state and the general welfare of all traders in the state, assuring that peace and harmony would return to the markets very soon.

This is contained in a statement on Saturday in Ibadan by the Commissioner for Information, Culture and Tourism, Dr Wasiu Olatunbosun.

Olatunbosun said the appointment was sequel to the ratification of Abass’s nomination by the State Market Leaders’ Council at its meeting held on Sept. 27.

He said the state commissioner for Trade, Industry, Investment and Cooperatives, Chief Bayo Lawal, presented the letter of appointment to the president-general, also known as Babaloja-general, on Friday, at the ministry, state secretariat Agodi, Ibadan.

The commissioner said that due process was followed in the appointment of the babaloja-general.

“The issue before us today has started since 2013, that is the appointment of babaloja general of Oyo state.

“But I am glad that with the help of God, and also that of my principal, the governor, we are able to achieve the seemingly unachievable.

“And today, despite all the crisis , we are able to follow due process as dictated by the court and judgment interpreted by the Ministry of Justice, we are able to produce babaloja general of Oyo state.”

He advised Abass to embrace all other contestants in the race, so as to succeed in the new position.

In his acceptance speech, Abass expressed gratitude to Makinde for handing over the baton of the affairs of all markets in the state to him.

He promised to use his wealth of experience to the growth of the markets, economy of the state and the general welfare of all traders in the state.

He solicited maximum support and cooperation from all stakeholders in piloting the affairs of the traders and markets in general as he could only achieve success through their cooperation and support.

Oyo PDP: Party leaders berate Governor Makinde for openly disapproving Atiku

Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo state has been berated by some leaders of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the state following his declaration not to support the presidential candidate of the party, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar.

The PDP leaders expressed displeasure at the governor’s position not to support the party’s presidential candidate in the state.

The leaders spoke in Ibadan on Wednesday at the emergency meeting of the leaders of the party from the 33 local government areas of the state.

They declared their support for Atiku, who Makinde and four other PDP governors are working against.

Former Minister of Mines and Steel Development,  Dr Wole Oyelese, noted that the governor spoke for himself and not the Oyo PDP.

He said ”Makinde was not speaking for the party in the state but speaking for himself”

He added that  PDP leaders would work and deliver the state for the presidential candidate of the party, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar in 2023 presidential polls in the country.

TheNewsguru.com reports that Makinde  during the weekend on a live radio programme  (Fresh FM) posited that he and other aggrieved PDP governors would not work for the presidential candidate of the party for some reasons.

Makinde bragged that the people of the state will vote for the PDP at the state level but cannot guarantee at the presidency level.

The Oyo governor recalled how the people voted for him massively  at the governorship election in 2019 but voted the All Progressive Congress (APC) at the National Assembly level.

Makinde, Wike and three other aggrieved PDP governors have exempted themselves from  Atiku’s camp.

The five governors have not hidden their position and they had vowed not to work for Atiku except for the National Chairman of the PDP, Dr Iyorchia Ayu resigned from office for a southerner to occupy the office.

  • Foreigners nabbed with illegally obtained voter’s cards in Oyo

Foreigners nabbed with illegally obtained voter’s cards in Oyo

The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), Oyo State Command, says it has arrested and repatriated 18 foreigners for allegedly possessing voter’s cards.

The NIS Comptroller in the state, Isah Dansuleiman, made this known during a sensitisation programme on the 2023 general elections for stakeholders in Ibadan on Wednesday.

The theme of the sensitisation programme is “Credible Elections in Nigeria: What is expected of migrants before, during and after the Election”.

Dansuleiman said that the migrants were arrested during a raid conducted in October by the command across the length and breath of the state.

The Comptroller said that the foreigners violated the law of the land and were instantly repatriated to their various countries of origin.

“No migrant regardless of their status should participate in the 2023 general elections and any migrant caught in possession of voters card will face the full wrath of the law.

“Those using them know their status but use them for their selfish reasons to procure voters cards,” he said.

The Comptroller warned migrants residing in Oyo State not to involve themselves in the 2023 general elections, saying they are allowed to stay in Nigeria to carry out their legal activities provided they have the required documents.

Dansuleiman called on Nigerians to report any migrant trying to participate in the general elections.

He assured Nigerians that the command would not relent at ensuring that the 2023 general elections is free, fair and credible.

Dansuleiman further called on migrants who are yet to do the migrants re-registration to do so, saying that the command would soon go out to smoke them out.

  • Our Infrastructure projects will drive economic growth – Makinde

Our Infrastructure projects will drive economic growth – Makinde

Gov. Seyi Makinde of Oyo State, says the various Infrastructure projects being executed by his administration are targeted at not only development of the state, but also economic growth.

Makinde said this on Saturday when he received the leadership of the Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE), in his office at the State Secretariat, Agodi Ibadan.

The NGE leadership was in the state for their Standing Committee meeting.

Makinde, who later took the team on a tour of some of the ongoing projects being executed by his government, said his administration was unrelenting in providing good governance to the people of Oyo State.

The governor and some key government functionaries led the team to visit the newly constructed Methodist Model Primary School, Bodija and the completed 65 kilometres Ibadan-Iseyin Road project.

They also visited the site of the ongoing 78 kilometers Iseyin – Ogbomoso Road project; ongoing Lere Adigun Housing Estate and ongoing Ibadan Airport dual carriage way, Alakia.

The team also visited the headquarters of the State Security Network, codenamed ‘Amotekun’ situated at Akinyele Road, Moniya, Ibadan and the newly rehabilitated/upgraded Primary Health Centre(PHC), Iseyin.

Makinde said the priority given to the Amotekun outfit and other conventional security agencies in the state was because “security is one of the major pillars of our accelerated development”.

He said the establishment of the Amotekun had been of great benefits in tackling security challenges, complementing the efforts of the conventional security agencies in addressing insecurity across the state.

On Ibadan-Iseyin Road, the governor said the project was awarded in November 2019, few months after his assumption of office, and the contractor delivered the project in 2021.

On the 78 kilometers Iseyin-Ogbomoso Road project that was awarded recently, Makinde said that 17 kilometres of the project, from Iseyin end, and 16 kilometres from Ogbomoso end, had been asphalted.

He hinted that all the bridges on the road had been done, hoping that the project would be completed for inauguration in January 2023.

On the PHC Iseyin, he said his administration was targeting to have one functional PHC in each of the 351 wards in the state.

He said the idea was for people not to go beyond one kilometre radius from wherever they are living to access primary health care facility.

On the Ibadan Airport Road being dualised, Makinde said “the Airport itself is central to expanding our economy.
“I tell people that if you want to expand your economy and the airport only has one flight in a day, it does not tell a good story.

“As a matter of fact, we believe aircraft should be landing and taking off every 30 minutes in the airport if it must have an impact on the economy.

“We have been able to put an aviation fuel storage and dispensing facility at the Airport, the only thing that will remain to make the airport fully competitive is the extension of the runway from 2.7 kilometres to 3.3 kilometres.
“Once we are able to do that, then we can do other possible things around there.”

Earlier, the President of the Guild, Mr Mustapha Isah, said the presence of the team in Ibadan was an opportunity to look at government projects in the state.
