Gov. Makinde vows to expose those politicising security

Gov. Seyi Makinde of Oyo State, says he will soon expose the people politicising security issues in the state.

Makinde stated this on Sunday while addressing the congregation at the St. Peters Anglican Cathedral Church, Aremo, Ibadan.

The governor who admitted that the state was experiencing security challenges, however, said it was not peculiar to the state but nationwide.

He said security ought not to be politicised, “but if they are politicising issues of security because they want to be in power in 2023, it means they are making mistake.

“If there’s no Oyo State or Nigeria by 2023 because of the politicisation of security; who and what are they going to govern?” he queried.

The governor said he and those working with him had taken time to investigate reports of security challenges across the state.

The governor implored those behind the politicisation of security challenges in the state because of their 2023 political ambitions to seek the face of God instead of engaging in actions that could trigger insecurity in the state.

Makinde used the occasion to x-ray efforts made so far by his administration, in addressing the menace of insecurity.

Among the efforts were purchase of 100 units of KIA cars equipped with communication gadgets for security agencies and re-establishment of Swift Response Squad and Operation Burst.

Others are purchase of all communication equipment by security operatives and establishment of Amotekun security outfit with 1,500 corps.

He reassured all residents of the state that his government would not rest until every nook and cranny of Oyo state was secured.

The governor further felicitated Christians and the entire people of Oyo state for the Easter celebration and admonished them to forgive one another.

Earlier, the Diocesan Archbishop of Ibadan North Diocese, Most Revd. Segun Okubadejo, charged every Christian to emulate the teachings and ways of life of Jesus Christ.

He urged Nigerians not to relent in praying to God Almighty for restoration of peace and a secured nation.

APC hails ZLP, others over defection in Oyo

The All Progressives Congress (APC), Oyo State Chapter, has praised members of Zenith Labour Party (ZLP) and loyalists of former Gov. Rasheed Ladoja for defecting to the APC on Tuesday in the state.

The party made the commendation in a statement signed by Mr Olawale Sadare, the Personal Assistant to the State APC Caretaker Chairman, Chief Akin Oke, on Thursday in Ibadan.

It blamed Gov. Seyi Makinde for the final collapse of the coalition arrangement upon which he got to power in 2019.

“It has again been confirmed that Oyo state is a divine project which is destined for success despite the setback suffered in 2019.

“All the major coalition partners have deserted Makinde for his failure to honour agreements and inability to perform in office as a worthy successor to Sen. Abiola Ajimobi,” the party stated.

The APC assured politicians from Ladoja’s camp and the ZLP that their decision to join the APC was a right decision taken and which would not be regretted.

“It was a necessary step to arrest the slide in participatory democracy and good governance being foisted again on the state by the PDP administration of Makinde.

“This bold step shall be reciprocated positively as we make bold to state that nobody shall be discriminated against as regards whether they are old or new APC members.

“It is even good that this is happening at the time our dear party is carrying out a nationwide membership registration and revalidation exercise,” the statement further noted.

The party expressed readiness to accommodate all the new members and get them registered accordingly in the 4,778 polling units across the state.

The APC said that the process of rescuing the state from the PDP has begun in earnest and no well-meaning stakeholder or member of the society will be left behind.

Oyo ZLP chapter, Ladoja’s group defect to APC

The Oyo State chapter of Zenith Labour Party (ZLP) and the former Gov. Rashidi Ladoja’s group have finally collapsed their structures into the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The announcement was made on Tuesday after a stakeholders meeting at the ZLP secretariat in Ibadan.

Speaking, Mr Kola Olaniyan, the state ZLP Chairman said the meeting was to inform members of the decision to move into the APC.

“It is just to inform them that we are now moving to APC as a group.

“Our leaders have held meetings with the APC and we are still on the meeting. We know it is going to pay us better than where the promise and fail.

“Without Ladoja, we cannot move to APC. It is with his knowledge that we took that decision,” he said.

He said the failure of PDP led administration in the state to fulfill its campaign promises necessitated the movement to the APC, saying the decision was supported by Ladoja.

Alhaji Kazeem Raji, representative of Ladoja Group, said the meeting was to consider their next political move that would be beneficial to their members and the state.

“We are here today to consider various deliberations held with different political parties with a view to joining anyone that will take care of the interest of their members.

“After judging from different political narratives and we have to choose the best out of the lots, APC remains the best political party to join today.

“As you can see, a motion was moved by the chairman of ZLP from Egbeda Local Government Area (LGA) of the state and was seconded by the chairman, ZLP from Atiba LGA to dissolve ZLP as well as Ladoja Group into APC,” he said.

Mr Kola Olabiyi, a party chieftain and former House of Representatives member said the failure of PDP to fulfill the 2019 coalition agreement necessitated their movement into APC.

He said that their movement into the APC was a better alternative than the 2019 coalition, saying it was a prosperous arrangement.

“The 2019 coalition came into being few days to the election and of course, this is not 2019 and election is still far, the registration is going on. Politics is a game of numbers.

“At the end of the day, everybody will move back to the ward, work and some of the agreement that we have reached, we will look at how it can best suit us.

“So, what we are trying to do now is to mobilise our members to register as members of this political party,” he said.

Quit notice: Fulani leaders dispute 4000 herders left Oyo for Kaduna

Some Fulani leaders at Ladduga grazing reserve in Kachia Local Government Area of Kaduna state, together with other stakeholders, have disputed the 4,000 figure published by the media, saying that only 107 herders from Oyo state relocated to Kaduna.

Malam Ardo Goge, Leader of the Fulanis at Ladduga, told some Peace builders and Journalists, who visited four of the new settlements of the Fulanis from Oyo state, due to the quit notice given to them, that only 107 of them relocated with their children, women and elderly.

Goge explained that the returnees were initially from the community before they left for the South, saying: “They left the area eight years ago to the South in order to feed their animals and now they are back.”

According to him, the returnees were peace loving herders, with a good record of promoting peaceful co-existence, even before they left Ladduga community to the South, saying that no herder would arrive Ladduga without the knowledge of the community leaders.

He challenged journalists and NGOs to prove that over 4000 herders had arrived Ladduga as earlier published in the media, saying that the media should always cross check their facts before posting their news, to avoid unnecessary suspicions.

“These herders were our own people and we have been living with them in peace and harmony for many years, before they migrated to the south, and now they are back due to threat of attack. They are not foreigners, they are Kaduna state indigenes, it is the crisis that brought them back.

“we have given them place to stay and we have cleared the bush for them to build new homes with their families,

‘”But they lack many things like social amenities, clothes, foods as they came into the state without their normal cows and other animals we are used to seeing them with”

Dr Saleh Momale, a former Permanent secretary of the Kaduna state peace commission, who is also a resident of the community, said he had been part of the fact finding mission to Ladduga community.

Momale said that since the report that over 4000 Fulani herdsmen arrived Ladduga community, he had spent a whole day in the forest with some Fulani Leaders moving round to ascertain the number of those Fulanis that relocated from the south.

“From the facts and figures, we only received the report of only 107 Fulani migrants from the South, who were originally Fulanis from the area that came back home” he said.

He stated that some of the Fulani herdsmen complained of lack of shelter, food and warming cloths against the harmattan.

Ibrahim Abdullahi, one of the returnees, reiterated their needs to include food and shelter, as their children were sleeping in open spaces and the ”weather is really cold”.

He called on Non-Governmental organizations (NGOs), Civil society organizations, NEMA, SEMA, The Red Cross, Interfaith mediation centre and public-spirited individuals to come to their aid.

Abdullahi also appealed to Miyetti Allah and all Fulani organizations to come to their rescue as they were really in need of help.

Oyo records 23 new coronavirus infections, urges people to self-isolate

As Oyo State records 23 new COVID-19 infections, the state’s Emergency Operations Centre (EOC) has urged people waiting for their test results to self-isolate.

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control, in its daily update on Wednesday confirmed that the new cases bring the total number of infections in the state to 6,016.

Dr Tomi Owopetu-Iken, a member of the EOC, in Ibadan said self-isolating while waiting for results was still needed to help stop the virus spreading to other people.

“While waiting for your test and results, you should remain at home and self-isolate.

“First, after samples have been collected for a COVID – 19 test, the people should self-isolate.

“It is important that anyone who has gone for a COVID – 19 test and is awaiting the result undergoes self-isolation immediately after sample collection until the result of the test is known.

“If the result is negative, the person no longer needs to self-isolate.

“However, if it is positive, the individual must self-isolate for 14 days from the day the sample was obtained.

“This is because an individual with COVID – 19 can spread the virus directly or indirectly through talking, sneezing and coughing,” Owopetu-Iken said.

According to her, self-isolation has been identified as the most effective way of containing the spread of COVID – 19 thereby protecting one’s family, friends and community from getting infected.

“Self-isolation involves staying at home, avoiding contact with family members and friends, not going to work, school, houses of worship or other public areas and not using public transport.

“The government is actively working towards making vaccines available and distribution will most likely be prioritized,” Owopetu-Iken said.

Stop taking in COVID-19 patients – Oyo Govt tells private health facilities

The Emergency Operations Centre (EOC) and the COVID-19 Technical Task Force in Oyo State on Saturday directed owners of private health facilities to stop managing COVID-19 cases in their facilities.

The directive was contained in a statement issued on Saturday in Ibadan by Mr Taiwo Adisa, the Chief Press Secretary to Gov. Seyi Makinde, and made available to newsmen.

The statement, which was addressed to Chief Executive Officers, Chief Operating Officers and Managers of private health facilities in Ibadan, Oyo state, indicated that the directive had the backing of Prof Temitope Alonge, the chairman of the state’s COVID-19 Technical Task Force.

“No private health facility in Oyo state has been licensed to manage COVID-19 patients. Strict adherence to the laid down infection prevention and control measures will be enforced by the EOC at any private health facility,” the statement quoted Alonge as saying.

According to the statement, the recent rising cases of COVID-19 in the state had been linked to the management of the pandemic by the private healthcare providers.

“I wish to inform you that there are reports of an increase in the number of healthcare workers who have contracted coronavirus infection at various healthcare facilities”, Alonge said.

He, therefore, enjoined the health workers to comply strictly with the advice, reiterating that the Oyo state government could not afford any depletion in the healthcare workforce, due to ill health arising from coronavirus infections.

He said that there were 30 testing centres approved for the purpose of testing samples, including the University College Hospital, UCH, Ibadan, adding that all suspected cases of coronavirus infection should be referred to the centres for testing, which is free for both symptomatic or suspected cases.
