Help, my wife wants to send me to my early grave – Man cries out

An electronics repairer, Samson Babalola, has petitioned the Ile-Tuntun Customary Court, Ibadan, to dissolve his 10 year-old marriage to his wife, Abosede, over death threats and alleged use of demonic powers.

Testifying on Monday before Chief Henry Agbaje, the court’s President, Babalola, who resides at Oke-Bola area, Ibadan, said that his wife often told him that she would use her demonic powers to send him to his early grave.

He said that Abosede often issued the threat whenever she saw him with any woman, not caring whatever relationship he might have with the lady.

The petitioner also claimed that his wife was trying to foist on him a pregnancy that was not his.

“After Abosede failed in her attempts to lord over me, she started inciting my first child I had with my late wife against me.

“She poisoned that child’s mind that I was responsible for his mother’s death, and that I was also making desperate efforts to kill her.

“Worse still, she instigated her younger brother and mother to ensure they ruined me because I reported her at Oyo State Welfare Department for her evil acts.

“Abosede now has an extra-marital affair with a man and they go to parties together.

“She is currently forcing me to accept a pregnancy I know nothing about because I have stopped having any conjugal rites with her,” Babalola said.

The respondent, who earns a living as a fashion designer, however, opposed the suit.

She defended the allegations against her, insisting that her husband was responsible for her pregnancy.

In his ruling, Agbaje held that there was need for Babalola and Abosede’s relatives to intervene in the matter.

He therefore, adjourned the case until Dec. 3, for continuation of hearing and advised the estranged couple to maintain peace.

Man narrates how his wife beats him at slightest provocation

Olumayowa Afolabi, an auto mechanic, who lives at Odeyan-Akanran road in Ibadan, Oyo State has narrated how his wife beats him at any slightest misunderstanding.

On Tuesday, he asked an Ile-Tuntun Customary Court in Ibadan to dissolve his 17-year-old marriage to his estranged wife, Mojisola on grounds of disrespect, threat to life and frequent assault.

In his testimony before the court, the petitioner said he was no longer willing to continue in the marriage with his wife so as to save himself the embarrassment of constant beating.

“My lord, if someone had told me that Mojisola would turn out to be beating me, I would have argued that it was impossible.

“It all began in 2018 when she first gave me a deafening slap when I challenged the bad role she played in the fight among four young teachers living in our house.

“Ever since that time, Mojisola does not hesitate to slap me anytime there was an issue between both of us.

“In fact, she got so used to slapping me that she even did it in the presence of her younger siblings who themselves complained against it,” he narrated.

Olumayowa said that her misbehaviour climaxed on January 1st, during the crossover service in church when Mojisola humiliated him by pushing him away in front of the congregation when spouses were exchanging greetings.

“Worst still, she stripped me naked and beat the hell out of me around May because I prevented her from going out late in the night to collect her phone.

“Mojisola has repeatedly shown it times without number that she no longer loves me and as a result denies me my conjugal rites,” Olumayowa said.

However, Mojisola prayed the court not to dissolve the union, adding that her close friend, who was in an amorous relationship with her husband, was the cause of the crack in their marriage.

    She also denied slapping Olumayowa.

“Our church and family friend named Esther Oluremi, who my husband engaged to run our poultry farm, is the one causing disaffection in our matrimonial home.

“The woman has sent her husband packing from his matrimonial home and when we visited her on January 1st, this year, I was in the sitting room when Olumayowa went to her bedroom and I saw him putting makeup powder on her face.

“That was the reason why I pushed Olumayowa in the church. He has also given custody of our children to Oluremi,” Mojisola explained.

In her counter claim, Oluremi said that Mojisola, her friend, was a pathological liar.

She contended that the poultry farm was jointly owned by her and Afolabi’s family and that the children were living with her because they were studying with her own children.

Delivering judgment, Chief Henry Agbaje, held that the damage done to the relationship was irredeemable, hence the dissolution.

He awarded custody of the first two children produced by the union to the petitioner and the last to the respondent.

The arbitrator also ordered Olumayowa to pay N4,000 as the child’s monthly feeding allowance in addition to taking responsibility of her education and other basic needs.

  • Why COVID-19 cases plummeted in Oyo State

Why COVID-19 cases plummeted in Oyo State

From a peak of over 1,380 COVID-19 confirmed cases in July to just 358 positive cases in August, Oyo State has witnessed a dramatic drop in number of new cases in a single month, an official said on Thursday.

The State Coordinator, Emergency Operation Center on COVID-19, Dr Taiwo Ladipo, said in Ibadan that the number of new infections plummeted within only a month.

But experts are of the opinion that the decline in cases may be partly due to insufficient testing.

Ladipo, spoke at a virtual lecture organised by the Medical and Dental Consultants’ Association of Nigeria (MDCAN), University College Hospital (UCH) Chapter, Ibadan.

According to him, Coronavirus infection among the frontline healthcare personnel and the scrapping of the drive-thru COVID-19 test centres affected testing in the state.

He also attributed the drop in number of tests to misconceptions and disinformation about COVID-19 among the residents.

Ladipo said that reduction in the number of coronavirus testing has contributed to the downward trend of new infections.

“Initially, we came up with innovative ways to encourage people to get tested.

“There were drive-thru testing centres and 12 community level mobile mass testing sites established across the state, so that gave us the high numbers we saw in June and July.

“However, we decided that we could not continue having an ad-hoc arrangement, but we should transit to more static and sustainable testing platforms which we have established in the general hospitals across the state.

“Unfortunately, we are not getting many people tested because they don’t want to visit any of the hospitals where the testing centres are now located,” he said.

“Misinformation in the media has also been a major setback, people are no longer seeing COVID-19 as a public health issue, they think it has been defeated.

“Also, we have had so many of our personnel coming down with the COVID-19 illness; I recall the instance where we had a training for lab scientists across the state and we had to test those lab scientists.

“We found that we had about 20 per cent positivity among them which was very demoralising. These are the challenges we are seeing.”

Ladipo said the state government had also rolled back many of the coronavirus restrictions due to pressure from highly placed persons in the society.

“These people are saying that since the number of new coronavirus infections are dropping, the state government should remove all the restrictions.

“While we are giving thoughts into easing the lockdown rules, we must be mindful that the battle against COVID-19 is not yet won,” he said.

The Chairman, UCH Response Team on COVID-19, Prof. Kayode Osungbade, said the low number of new infections recorded in recent weeks did not represent an actual decline of COVID-19 in the state.

Osungbade said that following an initial surge in July, the number of infections plummeted in August due to low number of tests conducted.

“The state conducted a total number of 5,901 and 5,347 tests in June and July respectively; in August only 2,427 test were conducted.

“In June, about 1,000 of the tests returned positive and the state recorded the highest number on July with 1,380 in confirmed cases.

“However, the confirmed cases fell drastically to 358 cases in August.

“We cannot call this a true decline, we can only have a true decline when the number of test rises beyond 6,000, while the number of positive cases are falling.

“Using the current statistics to make decisions and policies may result in dangerous and irreversible mistakes,” he said.

Oyo govt. to repatriate indigenes stranded in Lebanon – Makinde

Gov. Seyi Makinde of Oyo State says the State will ensure the repatriation of all its indigenes found to have been trafficked to Lebanon.

This was contained in a statement issued on Sunday in Ibadan by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Mr Taiwo Adisa.

The statement indicated that Makinde stated this while receiving a brief on the plight of the state indigenes trafficked to Lebanon from the Senior Special Assistant on Diaspora Matters, Mrs Bolanle Sarumi-Aliyu.

The governor said that the state would not stand by and be watching its indigenes suffer dehumanization, under any guise, in any part of the world.

“We will pay for the repatriation of all Oyo State indigenes who have been confirmed to have been trafficked to Lebanon. Please, put all the necessary plans in place to bring them back.

“I understand that some well-meaning individuals and groups have made some donations to some of the victims. Let them use such donations as pocket money.

“This state will pay for their flights and the fees requested to conduct COVID-19 tests on each of them,” he said.

Earlier, Sarumi-Aliyu informed the governor that a number of Oyo State indigenes had been discovered to be illegal migrants who were trafficked into modern-day slavery in Lebanon.

She said that while 40 of such victims had been screened and ready for the journey back home, more were still being discovered.

The governor’s aide added that her office had been working closely with the Lebanese authorities to identify those indigenes stranded in Lebanon, adding that the 40 victims already screened would be returning home on Aug.12.

“Since the government found out that we have some victims of human trafficking, who are stranded in Lebanon, we have stepped in.

“On July 11, we received 11 victims and they are going through rehabilitation with the social workers in the Ministry of Women Affairs.

“The state has given commitment that they will all be empowered. The same thing will happen to those we are expecting from the flight from Lebanon this August, once they have been cleared.” Sarumi-Aliyu stated.
