Ibadan carnival tragedy: Several children dead as Oyo govt vows to punish organisers

The Oyo State Government has directed security agencies in the state to fish out organisers of the children’s funfair where several deaths and injuries were recorded on Wednesday morning.

The state’s Deputy Governor, Mr Bayo Lawal, disclosed this while visiting the Adeoyo State Hospital, off Ring Road in Ibadan, to sympathise with the victims.

Several persons, mostly children, were feared dead while many others were injured during a children’s carnival at Basorun Islamic High School.

The Deputy Governor said it was disheartening that the event’s organisers failed to inform security agencies about the event knowing that many residents would be eager to attend.

“We are not exonerating anybody connected to this incident, but the government is awaiting the report of the security agencies and we have given a time line to know the next line of action,” he said.

Lawal however urged the people of the state to be careful of the kind of event they attend during this Yuletide season.

The state government had said earlier that the dead and those injured were taken to five hospitals across Ibadan, including Adeoyo State Hospital and the University College Hospital (UCH).

Most of the victims and their parents had gathered at the carnival’s venue as early as 5 a.m. on Wednesday.

There were also several others who arrived late Tuesday in order to be among the first to benefit at the event which had promised a free distribution of food items.

On the actual figure of casualties, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) in the state, Adewale Osifeso, told NAN that investigation was still ongoing on the incident.

“Investigation is in progress. Updates would be provided accordingly,” he said.

A visit by a NAN Correspondent to the Adeoyo State Hospital indicated however that no less than 20 dead bodies were brought to the hospital from the carnival venue. There were also several other victims who were receiving treatment.

Speaking to NAN, a parent, who came to pick the corpse of his eight-year-old child, Idowu Muiz, blamed it all on the current economic hardship in the country. He said this was what led him to allow members of his family to attend the event. Several other parents were seen at the hospital weeping over the death of their children.

The state’s Commissioner for Information and Civic Orientation, Prince Dotun Oyelade, in a statement disclosed that majority of the victims were children.

“Government has swiftly mobilised a rapid response team following the incident.

“Victims of the incident have been swiftly transported to various hospitals within the Ibadan metropolis for medical attention,” he said.

The Commissioner however said government was awaiting a detailed report from the Police Command in the state to know the total number of victims involved in the unfortunate incident.

He went on to state that government was not involved in any of the planning.

“Neither was the state Ministry of Health requested to provide any logistics to support the private funfair,” Oyelade said.

He stated further that government would do all in its power to stand by victims of the incident “through this trying period.”

The Commissioner urged parents who had become apprehensive about their children’s whereabouts to check some medical facilities in Ibadan where victims of the stampede were taken to.

“The medical centres are Patnas Hospital, Basorun; Western Hospital, Basorun; Ring Road State Hospital; Molly Specialist Hospital; and University College Hospital (UCH).”

He added that while the State Government extended its deepest sympathies to the families affected by the tragedy, it also urged members of the public to remain calm and cooperative.

“We are in the process of gathering relevant pieces of information and necessary support is being arranged for the victims,” Oyelade said.

  • 23-year-old convict escapes from courtroom, imprisoned for 6 years

23-year-old convict escapes from courtroom, imprisoned for 6 years

A 23-year-old convict momentarily escaped from the Mapo Chief Magistrates’ Court in Ibadan on Tuesday when the magistrate stepped briefly to her chamber to write her judgment.

It took the efforts of some police officers and a soldier, who threatened to gun down the convict if he refused to stop before he was rearrested and brought to justice.

Upon his rearrest, the magistrate, Mrs O. O. Latunji, sentenced the convict, Abubakar Bello, to six years imprisonment.

Latunji said she convicted and sentenced Bello based on the overwhelming evidence tendered against him by the police as well as his confessional statement.

According to the magistrate, she took note of the fact that pleading guilty to an offence should be accorded a reduced sentence.

“However, to serve as a deterrent to others, you are hereby sentenced to three years imprisonment for each of the two offences.

“The sentence has no option of fine and shall run concurrently,” Latunji said.

The police prosecutor, Insp Oluseye Akinola, had earlier told the court that the convict was arraigned on a two-count charge bordering on conspiracy and stealing.

Akinola said the convict stole N3.5 million worth of electrical cables from a filling station at Odo-Ona Kekere, Ibadan, on Oct. 28.

The prosecution said one Mayowa Balogun, Manager of Olabanji Oil and Gas Station at Odo-Ona Kekere, reported the stealing at Mapo Police Station, after which the police swung into action.

According to Akinola, the convict, who had just returned from a jail term, was apprehended by the security guard of the filling station at about 4.00 a.m., after cutting electrical installations.

“Other members of his gang are now at large,” he said.

The prosecutor said it was not the first time the convict would be leading his gang to steal from the filling station.

He said the offences contravened Sections 516 and 390 (9) of the Criminal Code Cap 38 Vol. II Laws of Oyo State 2000.

The Oyo State government has cancelled the collection of N4,000 as administrative fee for retirement form.

This is contained in a statement issued on Friday in Ibadan by the Commissioner for Establishments and Training, Mr Olusegun Olayiwola.

Olayiwola, citing Gov. Seyi Makinde’s commitment to enhancing retirees’ welfare, said the cancellation was aimed at alleviating financial burdens on civil servants.

“Before now, retirees were required to pay N4 000 to access the retirement form at the Ministry of Establishments and Training.

“However, with the governor’s directive, an electronic form has been designed online at no cost to retirees,” the commissioner said.

He said that the decision to cancel the payment reflected the governor’s efforts to prioritise retirees’ well-being.

Olayiwola emphasised that the decision was a significant step toward reducing financial stress on retirees.

  • Oyo govt reveals actions to be taken against tax evaders

Oyo govt reveals actions to be taken against tax evaders

The Oyo State Government may soon be using legal action against residents and business owners domiciled in the state who evade the payment of taxes, an official said on Friday.

Mr Olufemi Awakan, the Executive Chairman of Oyo State Board of Internal Revenue, disclosed in a statement in Ibadan it was time to clear all backlog of tax payments.

“It is also time we ensure residents of the state fulfil their civic responsibilities and obligations to the state.

“The payment of taxes and levies are not optional, as stated in Section 24 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria,” he explained.

Awakan stated that it was important that every citizen who earned income on his or her trade, business, profession, vocation or employment must pay the correct amount of taxes.

“Payment of taxes is not a punishment by the government against citizens, but a compulsory obligation by all citizens to the government.

“Tax obligations are governed by several laws, primarily the Federal Inland Revenue Act, Personal Income Tax Act (2011) amended, and various state tax laws which must be obeyed,” he added.

Awakan pointed out that there were some forms of punishment available for tax evaders.

“Serious cases of tax evasion can lead to criminal charges. Convictions may result in imprisonment, fines, or both, depending on the severity of the offence.

“The tax authorities have the power to assess and determine the tax owed, if an individual or business does not file returns or pay taxes.

“This can lead to additional penalties like fines and interests. Also, the government can seize assets or bank accounts of individuals or businesses that fail to comply with tax obligations.”

The Oyo state board of internal revenue’s executive chairman also warned that business organs which neglect their tax obligations may face difficulties in renewing licences or permits necessary for operation.

“Tax authorities can take legal action to recover unpaid taxes, which may involve court proceedings.

“Non-compliance with tax laws can lead to reputational harm, affecting relationships with clients, customers and business partners.”

Awakan then advised citizens to ensure they pay their taxes as at when due.
