U Turn: Ex Oyo Gov. Ladoja agrees to wear beaded crown

Former Oyo State governor and Otun Olubadan of Ibadanland, High Chief Rashidi Ladoja, clarified yesterday that his decision to join other high chiefs in wearing a beaded crown should not be interpreted as him becoming an Oba. He emphasized that despite wearing the beaded crown, which he described as ceremonial, he remains the Otun Olubadan of Ibadanland.

Speaking to reporters at his Bodija home, Ladoja explained that his decision followed consultations with Christians, Muslims, Oluwo, and Araba of Ibadanland, and was in line with the wishes of the Ibadan people. He reiterated that the ceremonial crown does not make him an Oba, as there is only one Oba in Ibadanland, the Olubadan.

“The crown is ceremonial, for those of us in the Olubadan line to become the Olubadan. We have only one Oba in Ibadanland, who is the Olubadan,” Ladoja stated. “For Ibadan, the crown does not make someone a king. I remain the Otun Olubadan. To be an Oba, you need a domain and chiefs. As an Olubadan chief, you can’t be a king in Ibadan and wear your crown and horse whip to the Olubadan palace.”

He addressed speculation that the amended Chieftaincy Law was targeted at him, suggesting that it was made public to inform him of any potential hindrances to becoming the Olubadan. “It’s not just about becoming the Olubadan, it’s about service. Only God knows who will become Olubadan. I am grateful for the life I’ve been given,” he added.

Senator Ladoja, along with other dignitaries, attended a thanksgiving service for the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Owolabi Olakulehin, at the Cathedral Church of St. Peters, Aremo, Ibadan. The service, attended by monarchs, politicians, and religious leaders, marked the end of the coronation activities for Oba Olakulehin, the 43rd Olubadan of Ibadanland.

Bishop of Ibadan North Anglican Diocese, Rt. Rev. Rotimi Aladekugbe, urged Oba Olakulehin to use his position to promote peace, unity, and development in Ibadanland, praying for wisdom, guidance, and strength for the monarch. Oba Olakulehin expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve and committed to working for the progress and prosperity of his people.

Oyo SUBEB shuts job portal after 52,423 applications

Oyo State Universal Basic Education Board (Oyo SUBEB) has shut the job application portal opened for recruitment of primary school teachers, after receiving 52,423 applications.

The job application portal was opened on June 25 and ran till July 9.

A statement issued by the SUBEB Chairman, Dr Nureni Adeniran, on Thursday said that the job application portal was closed after the July 9 deadline.

“We are impressed by the response, which shows that people are truly keen and excited to work with Oyo State Universal Basic Education Board.

“However, we are compelled to close the portal, as the deadline had passed.

“We received not less than 52,423 submitted applications within the number of days of opening the portal. That was impressive.

“After shutting the portal, our team has started sorting out the applications and picking the suitably qualified candidates who will be contacted by the board,” he said.

Adeniran, however, urged the applicants to be wary of fake news on the ongoing recruitment process.

He also advised them to check their e-mails and phones regularly for information on developments.

Adeniran stated that after the sorting out of the applications, the next stage would be the conduct of CBT examinations.

“The date, venue and time scheduled for each candidate will be sent through the email and phone numbers submitted,” he said.

Makinde inaugurates newly built Olubadan palace

Gov. Seyi Makinde of Oyo State on Wednesday inaugurated the newly built Olubadan Palace situated at Oke Aremo, Ibadan.

Performing the ceremony, Makinde said he had put process in place that would make all the 11 Local Government Councils in Ibadan, to contribute money monthly toward the maintenance of the palace.

The governor said his administration would soon commence the second phase of the palace and renovate the Bower Tower, which was behind the palace, so as to attract tourists to the fortress.

He commended the effort of his predecessor, late Abiola Ajimobi for initiating the construction of the new palace.

In his welcome remarks, the President-General, Central Council of Ibadan Indigenes (CCII), Chief Adeniyi Ajewole, expressed joy over the completion of the new palace.

Ajewole said the completion of the project had put an external stop to the embarrassment, mockery of Ibadan by outsiders “that Ibadan with its uniqueness does not have a palace of its own.

“Ibadan is not just having a palace today, but a palace of world class which the indigenes can be proud of.”

Ajewole appreciated all the industrious sons and daughters of Ibadan, who contributed in one way or the other to the commencement and completion of the new palace.

Oba Oloyede Asanike, who reigned between 1983 and 1993 was the first Olubadan to live in a modern palace, built in the heart of the city, Oja’ba, Ibadan.

However, the traditional rulers that reigned after him, including the last occupier of the Olubadan throne, Oba Lekan Balogun, made their personal or family houses their palaces.

The new palace located at Oke Aremo, Ibadan was spearheaded by the CCII following the need to relocate the palace from Oja’ba to a befitting cite.

The Olubadan designate, Oba Owolabi Olakulehin, who would be inaugurated on Friday will occupy the new palace.

The Oyo State government has noted that the job portal for recruitment of public primary school teachers will be accessible as from Tuesday June 25 by 6pm.

Dr Nureni Adeniran, the Chairman, Oyo State Universal Basic Education Board made the disclosure on Tuesday while briefing newsmen at the Board’s headquarters in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital.

He added that the portal would register each candidate with his/her email, phone number, and National Identification Number, among other requirements, to provide suitable jobs, either as teachers or caregivers.

Adeniran gave the site link as subeb.jobportal.oyostate.gov.ng for the recruitment of 7,000 teachers and 100 caregivers.

Oyo health workers begin 7-day warning strike today

Medical and health workers in Oyo State will, on Monday (today), begin a seven-day warning strike to press home their demands.

President of the state chapter of Medical and Health Workers’ Union of Nigeria (MHWUN), Mr John Fabunmi, disclosed this in Ibadan on Sunday.

Fabunmi said that the warning strike would be observed by members of the union in all the health institutions across the state, including those in the ministries, departments and local government councils.

He said that the industrial action had become imperative in order to press home their demands.

The labour leader said that the union had reminded the state government of its grievances several times, but that nothing had been done to address their demands.

“Part of the union’s demands is that the new hazard allowance in the state be spread to cover all other health workers in the state, and not only those working in the hospitals.

“Another demand is that some of our members removed from the Consolidated Health Salary Structure (CONHESS) be returned and those who have not been placed on the CONHESS be included.

“We wish to let Gov. Seyi Makinde know that up till now, nothing has been done to address these demands, even after we had given the state government a 14-day ultimatum,” he said.

Fabunmi said that the 14-day ultimatum elapsed on June 21, adding that up till now, nothing had been heard from the government.

“In view of the present situation and the agitations from our members, the union has, therefore, resolved to embark on a seven-day warning strike to further call the attention of the government to the need to attend to our agitations.

“Our members in all the health institutions, ministries and local governments will be participating in the warning strike which will commence on Monday, June 24,” he said.

Nurses and midwives in the state had, on May 21, embarked on indefinite strike, in compliance with the directive of the state chapter of National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives (NANNM).

The union, through its state Chairman, Adeyemi Samuel, had cited failure of the state government to address its demands as the reason for calling for the strike.

The industrial action embarked on the nurses and midwives had been taking its toll on the health sector, as the usual boisterous nature in most of the hospitals in the state had disappeared.

  • Dividends of democracy will go round – Makinde

Dividends of democracy will go round – Makinde

Gov. Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has reaffirmed his commitment to deliver the dividends of democracy to all the state’s residents.

Makinde stated this on Saturday while opening the reconstructed Olodo bridge on the 35.6 Kilometre Iwo Road, Ibadan, whose rehabilitation is ongoing.

The governor was represented at the occasion by the state Commissioner for Public Works and Transport, Prof. Daud Sangodoyin.

Makinde said all the nook and cranny of the state, without regard to the political inclination, religious affiliation or socio-economic group, would feel the impact of good governance.

He explained that his administration’s commitment to this necessitated the reconstruction of the Ibadan-Iwo Road, concentrating energy on projects with the potential to expand the state’s economy.

“The rehabilitation aspect of the road project, involving the repairs of existing hydraulic structure and overlaying of the asphaltic surface had commenced in earnest after the award of the road project and is still ongoing.

“However, the heavy rainfall of July 4, 2023, in which Egberi River overflowed its banks at Olodo area, due to the inadequacy of the existing 3.0m x 3.0m single box culvert, rendered the road impassable.

“The anguish and economic losses that the state and her citizenry incurred in the wake of the flooding event were better imagined than experienced,” he said.

He noted that the successful completion of the first half of the bridge would, however, enhance the seamless movement of people, vehicles, goods and services and serve as a link connecting Osun.

On behalf of the Olodo community, John Adebayo said completing the bridge had ended the many years of suffering caused by incessant flooding and inability to use the road.

He took time to appreciate the Makinde-led administration for its intervention.
