    Lagos, Abuja, Oyo worst hit by Covid-19 spread; nine deaths recorded in 24Hrs

    Nigeria posted more COVID-19 cases on Wednesday, with Lagos, Abuja and Oyo topping the chat in infections.

    The Nigerian Centre for Disease Control, NCDC, reported 1,398 new cases and nine deaths on Thursday, as the deadly virus continued to rage in Nigeria in the second wave.

    The 1,398 new cases represent a rise in infections from the 1,270 cases reported nationwide on Tuesday, only that more deaths were recorded (12) than Wednesday (nine).

    Lagos topped the chat with 542 news cases, higher than the 435 cases it recorded the previous day.

    Abuja’s 131 new COVID-19 cases represent a fall in infections from the 234 cases it reported the previous day, while Oyo, which raked in 120 fresh cases reported a rise in infections from the 103 cases posted the previous day.

    Rivers recorded 113 new cases, representing a rise in figures from the 71 cases reported on Tuesday, just a Plateau’s 111 new cases also showed a rise in infections from the 86 cases posted the previous day.

    Others are: Kaduna-71, Kwara-71, Akwa Ibom-34, Sokoto-31, Benue-28, Ogun-27, Kano-26, Kebbi-17, Osun-12, Nasarawa-11, Delta-10, Gombe-10, Bayelsa-9, Borno-9, Edo-8, Ekiti-3, Jigawa-2 and Katsina-2.

    Till date, 103,999 cases have been confirmed, 82,555 cases have been discharged and 1,382 deaths have been recorded in 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.

    New cases were reported in 23 States in the country.

    Seven feared dead as Amotekun, herdsmen battle in Oyo

    Men of the Oyo State Security Network Agency popularly known as Operation Amotekun and some Fulani have allegedly engaged in a clash at Aiyete in the Ibarapa North Local Government Area of the state.

    The brawl was said to have started at Okebi village on Saturday morning but the cause of the clash could not be directly ascertained as of the time of filing this report.

    A man, Saliu, who claimed to be a resident of the area seven persons had been killed.

    Saliu said, “Alhaji Usman Okebi and his two sons were killed. We don’t know what caused the fight. Some persons were shot and injured.

    “The number of people killed has increased to seven. Those who were shot and ran away later died in the bush”, he told Punch..

    The Commandant of Amotekun in Oyo State, Col. Olayinka Olayanju (retd), when contacted said he was on his way to the place to ascertain what happened.

    He said, “I heard the same thing and I am on my way there now.”

    Makinde to sanction erring personnel of Amotekun corps

    Gov. Seyi Makinde of Oyo State says his government is already investigating the reports of alleged highhandedness of some personnel of the Western Nigeria Security Network; code-named ‘Amotekun’.

    This is contained in a statement issued on Friday in Ibadan by Mankinde’s Chief Press Secretary, Mr Taiwo Adisa.

    The statement said that Makinde’s reaction on his Twitter handle followed the recent face-off between some personnel of the Amotekun corps and some youths in Tapa town, Ibarapa North Local Government Area of the state.

    The governor stated that the matter would be addressed squarely in the interest of the security and wellbeing of residents of the state.

    He maintained that his administration was doing everything it could to address security challenges in the state.

    Makinde said that Amotekun was introduced to check insecurity in the state and that his administration would not sit back and watch any harassment or intimidation of any member of the public or any security agent.

    “Following the recent events in Tapa, Ibarapa North local government area, it becomes imperative that I once again reassure the good people of Oyo state that our administration is doing everything in its power to address security issues in our state.

    “One of the strategies we are using to check insecurity in the state is the recently introduced Western Nigeria Security Network (Amotekun).

    ” I am fully aware of the alleged highhandedness by some members of the corps. We are investigating these issues to address them promptly.

    “The welfare and security of the good people of Oyo state remain our top priority.

    “We will not sit back and watch any harassment or intimidation of members of the public or our security officers.

    “Therefore, I urge the good people of Oyo state to please remain calm and allow members of the corps to perform their legally authorised duties for our peoples’ well-being.

    “Let me assure you that if any corps members is abusing their office, they will be dealt with accordingly,” Makinde stated.

    Three killed, one doctor kidnapped as gunmen invade Oyo community

    The Oyo State Police Command on Sunday confirmed that a businesswoman and two nine-year-old cousins were killed by gunmen in the state.

    The command also confirmed that a man known as Dr. Akindele in Tapa in the Ibarapa North Local Government Area of the state was abducted.

    The three were at Idere in the Ibarapa Central Local Government Area of the state.

    The police commissioner in the state, CP Joe Nwachukwu Enwonwu, in a statement issued by the state Public Relations Officer, PPRO, Olugbemiga Fadeyi, said some suspects had been arrested through the collaborative efforts of the police, vigilantes, and hunter’s.

    He added that investigation had commenced and its outcome would be made public in due time.

    The statement said, “The attention of the Commissioner of Police, Oyo State Command, CP Joe Nwachukwu Enwonwu, has been drawn to the two incidents that happened at Idere in Ibarapa Central Local Government Area, where a businesswoman and two nine-year-old cousins were killed by unknown gunmen, while a man known as Dr. Akinyele was abducted in Tapa in the Ibarapa North Local Government Area of Oyo State on the 2nd of January, 2021.

    “The CP wishes to state that regarding the incident of murder at Idere where three persons were killed, some suspects have been arrested through the collaborative efforts of the police and other local security agents i.e. vigilantes, hunters, etc. and investigation has commenced. The outcome will be made public in due time. Furthermore, intensive manhunt is still ongoing around the area to arrest other fleeing suspects (if any) and at the same time, massive deployment is (being done) to restore confidence to the community in particular and the whole Ibarapa axis in general.

    “The CP stressed further that the abduction of Dr. Akindele in his hospital, though not officially reported to the Divisional Police headquarters in Ayete as stated by the DPO was an issue of concern. Nonetheless, he reiterates his commitment to rejig the security architecture of the area (to do) more than the previous year —2020. He stated that, concerted efforts have been put in place to protect lives and property in Ibarapa axis in particular and the whole Oyo State in general.

    “The CP uses the opportunity to further assure all and sundry in Oyo State that adequate security measures have been put in place to professionally prevent any breakdown of law and order in the state. He stated that the good people of Oyo State are enjoined to go about their lawful businesses without any fear of molestation from any individuals, persons, or groups, while decrying the sudden increase in the rate of abduction in the state and the need to be more careful in our daily activities to stem the tide.

    “He concluded that as a new year package, the command expects collaboration and prompt dissemination of credible information from members of the public as the police in turn will give quality service delivery.”

  • COVID-19 kills 5 in Oyo, 2 in Kano, 1 in Anambra

    Eight persons died Saturday from COVID-19 complications in three states, with Oyo recording five of the deaths.

    Oyo, the fifth most affected state by the virus in Nigeria, with 3,994 cases now has a death toll of 51.

    Kano also recorded two deaths, taking its death toll to 68.

    South eastern state of Anambra recorded its 20th COVID-19 death, with one death, also on Saturday.

    Overall, Nigeria’s death toll is now 1,302, from 1,294 on Friday.

    The figures were the latest statistics released by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control, NCDC Saturday night.

    There were fewer confirmed cases, plunging from 1,074 on 1 January to 576 a day after.

    Lagos led with 277 new cases, making its cumulative cases 31,107.

    FCT Abuja registered 90 cases, Oyo 51 and Nasarawa 49.

    Kaduna was missing on the list Saturday. NCDC did not explain why.

    As at Saturday, Nigeria has 89,163 confirmed cases, with 74,789 discharged.

    Among the 416 discharged were 287 community recoveries in Lagos State and 60 community recoveries in Plateau State.

    Cases being treated also shot up to 13,072.

    Kidnapped sister of Oyo Deputy Minority leader regains freedom

    Mrs Jumoke Babalola-Oludele, sister of the Deputy Minority Leader, Oyo State House of Assembly, Mr Sunkanmi Babalola, has regained freedom from her abductors.

    Recall that Babalola-Oludele was kidnapped on December, 21 around Oniguguri junction, beside Lion of Judah, Iyana Church, Monatan area, Ibadan.

    The victim was allegedly kidnapped by three unknown gunmen who drove in a white Toyota Camry.

    The kidnappers had earlier demanded for N20 million ransom for her release.

    Confirming the release of the victim on Saturday in Ibadan, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) in the state, SP Olugbenga Fadeyi, said the victim had regained freedom and united with her family.
    Fadeyi said Babalola-Oludele was released through the collaborative efforts of the security agencies and other stakeholders in the state.

    The police spokesman further said that two suspects had been arrested in connection with the case while investigation was still ongoing.

    The victim’s brother, Babalola, representing Egbeda State Constituency in the state Assembly, who also confirmed his sister’s release, said that no ransom was paid to her abductors.

    NDLEA captures 133 suspected drug offenders in Oyo

    The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, Oyo State Command, said in Ibadan on Friday that it arrested 133 suspects for various drug-related offences in the year 2020.

    This is a sharp reduction compared with the 201 arrests made in year 2019 even as there was a 28 per cent increase from the 3,703.58 kilogrammes seized in 2019 in the year under review.

    The Public Relations Officer of NDLEA in the command, Mrs Mutiat Okuwobi, made the revelation in a statement made available to journalists in Ibadan on Friday.

    The statement indicated that 44 convictions were recorded during the year. The convicts are currently serving various jail terms ranging from six months to 10 years.

    It read that the command also seized 4,739.195 kilogrammes of Cannabis Sativa, otherwise known as Indian Hemp, and other illicit substances during the period under review.

    A total of 51 people are undergoing counselling while the command destroyed two marijuana farms at Ajani village in Ona-Ara and Oluyole local government areas of the state.

    The statement partly read, “There is hope for people who use drugs so parents and loved ones should never give up on them. Stakeholders must work together to get useful information on drug abuse to win the fight against trafficking in our communities.

    “The NDLEA command appreciates the support from the state government and other stakeholders during the year.”

    Cross-over: Oyo seeks CAN’s compliance with FG curfew

    Oyo State Government has urged the state chapter of the Christian Association of Nigeria to ask churches in the state to end their cross-over services before 12 midnight on New Year eve to enable worshipers to comply with the existing 12 midnight to 4 am curfew imposed by the Federal Government.

    The Coordinator of the Oyo State Task Force on COVID-19, Prof. Temitope Alonge, said this in Ibadan on Tuesday while briefing newsmen on the latest developments on COVID-19.

    He urged the Oyo State chapter of CAN to emulate their counterpart in Lagos State which had directed their members to end their cross-over services latest by 11pm on Thursday.

    He said street carnivals were banned in order to curb the spread of the virus while appealing to residents to obey COVID-19 protocols.

    Alonge said, “I know that the Christian Association of Nigeria in Lagos State, after the release from the Lagos State government, had a meeting and directed that churches should in compliance with the national directive complete their services early enough to go home.

    “We are asking CAN in Oyo State to do the same, admonish and advice as many of their members to comply with the national directive.

    “It is not an Oyo State directive and we believe that was in the general good of everybody.

    “It is the responsibility of the individuals, families and corporate organisations to adhere to existing COVID-19 guidelines and protocols such as the use of face masks in public places, physical distancing and regular hand washing.”

    Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has declared that terrorists are entering the South West geo-political zone of the country through Oke Ogun.

    Makinde said terrorists and bandits from Mali and other countries in the West African region are entering through a border in Saki, one of the towns in the State.

    The Governor, who spoke when he visited Saki, noted that the issue of banditry was one of the challenges his government was battling with.

    He added that the inauguration of Amotekun Corps was yielding positive results.

    Makinde noted that Amotekun Corps had been able to flush out some bandits terrorising residents of the State.

    He said, “So, it was really tasking. Of course, in our locality here, the issue of banditry is also another issue.

    “For instance, Saki shares an international border and it is more of an international issue because we have bandits all the way from Mali that are trying to cross.

    “Once they gain entrance into anywhere they can operate, they will stay there.

    “When we inaugurated Amotekun, you gave us your support. When some bandits went to the bush at Kishi, we were able to flush them out with all the efforts of all of us here. So, we want to use this opportunity to say thank you to you all.”

    Police arrest suspected kidnapper of Oyo lawmaker’s sister

    The Oyo State Police Command has arrested a suspected kidnapper of a lawmaker’s sister, Jumoke Babalola.

    In a statement issued on Friday by the Police Public Relations Officer, Fadeyi Olugbenga, 35-year-old Babalola was abducted by armed men while returning from her shop by unknown armed men.

    Following the abduction, the police spokesman said the Anti-Kidnapping Squad of the Command swung into action.

    “One Jumoke Babalola Oludele ‘f’ age 35 yrs that was kidnapped while returning from her shop by an unknown armed man, one suspect arrested after the anti-kidnapping squad of the Oyo Police Command swung into action,” the statement partly read.

    “The suspect is currently being quizzed to obtain useful information. The effort intensified to rescue the hostage and also to arrest the culprits. Further development shall unfold soonest, please.”
