    45-year-old man dies inside well in Ibadan

    The Oyo State Fire Service on Sunday said it recovered the body of a 45-year-old man from a well at First Women Estate in Akala area of Ibadan.

    The General Manager of the Fire Service, Mr Yemi Akinyinka,confirmed the incident in a statement made available to newsmen in Ibadan.

    Akinyinka said personnel of the service received a distress call about the incident on Friday at 2:11 p.m through a telephone call from one Mr Yusuf.

    According to him,fire fighters responded to the distress call by rushing to the scene of the incident.

    “On getting there, it was discovered that a man was trapped inside the well while working beneath,” he said.

    He, however, said the corpse of the 45-year-old man was recovered from inside the well and handed over to his relatives.

    Akinyinka said that personnel of the Amotekun Corps from Oluyole Command led by one Akanbi Kabiru were also at the scene of the incident to give a helping hand.

    In another development, the general manager said his personnel also responded to a  fire incident at Salim Complex , Alafia Estate, in Akobo area of Ibadan on Saturday.

    He said the incident, which was caused by electricity surge, affected one of a twin two-bedroom flat in the estate.

    Akinyinka said that his personnel swiftly curtailed the fire from spreading to other parts of the building while no casualty was recorded.

    He advised members of the public to always switch off and unplug their electrical appliances when not in use.

    Oyo State Governor ,Seyi Makinde has presented the Staff of Office to the new Alaafin of Oyo, Abimbola Owoade.

    The governor made the presentation at his office in Ibadan, the state capital on Monday.

    The symbolic event was performed nearly three years after the death of the former Alaafin, Lamidi Adeyemi III.

    The presentation of the staff of office was done amid controversy concerning the choice of the new Alaafin announced by the governor last week.

    I’m not against LG chairmen carrying out their constitutional duties – Makinde

    Gov. Seyi Makinde of Oyo State on Wednesday in Ibadan said he was not against elected representatives of the people at the local government level carrying out their constitutional duties.

    Makinde, during the inauguration of a newly-built Local Government House and Staff Training School within the State Secretariat at Agodi, said what he was against was for anyone to create confusion.

    “What I am against is for anyone to try to create a constitutional la cuna, which is capable of turning one arm of government against the other,” he said.

    “In a country where there is trust deficit between the leaders and the people, some people will always take advantage of such a situation to fan the flame of disunity or choose to push on unintended narratives and perception,” the governor added.

    He said his administration would continue to work and coordinate with the local governments so that the vision of his administration could also be sold to their administrators.

    “Both the state government and local government councils can achieve more if there’s synergy,” Makinde pointed out.

    He disclosed that his government had collaborated with local governments to upgrade 209 Primary Healthcare Centres (PHCs) and also equipped 264 PHCs.

    “My administration has completed about 60 model schools, constructed and renovated hundreds of primary school classrooms,” Makinde stated.

    He, however, said there were more to be done as his government would continue to support local governments in the state.

    The governor promised to continue seeking innovative ways to collaborate with local government administrators for the benefit of the people of the state.

    Speaking on the inauguration of the new building, Makinde said the structure would provide a more conducive environment for the state’s local government workers and thus enhance their productivity.

    He promised that his administration would work on renovating some of the dilapidated buildings within the State Secretariat as much as it could before the end of his tenure.

    The governor, during the event, announced an approval for the conversion of all ad hoc workers across local government areas in the state into permanent staff status.

    He directed the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters, Mr Ademola Ojo, to follow due process within four weeks and interview affected ad hoc staff for permanent employment.

    Speaking also at the event, the National President of Nigerian Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE), Mr Ambali Adetunji, commended Gov. Makinde for giving priority to workers’ welfare in the state.

    Adetunji who was represented by the South-West Vice Chairman of NULGE, Mr Abimbola Babalola, noted that the newly-built structure would boost the morale of staff of local governments.

    He added that the training school would also enhance the building of capacity of local government workers.(

    Ladoja’s role in my emergence as governor in 2019 – Makinde reveals

    Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde on Wednesday acknowledged that Sen. Rashidi Ladoja, a former governor of the state, played a critical role in his emergency as governor in 2019.

    Makinde stated this while speaking on Wednesday in Ibadan during one of the ceremonies marking Ladoja 80th birthday at the celebrant’s residence.

    The governor said Ladoja, who is also the Otun Olubadan of Ibadanland, midwifed the process that led to his emergence as governor in 2019.

    He said that his political trajectory could therefore not be completed without Ladoja.

    “We may have some political differences. When I became governor in 2019, you (Ladoja) are the one that midwifed the process.

    “And I beg you that whenever I have offended you, I have begged you.

    “This is not the only thing, and sincerely we will re-align and there will be development,” Makinde said.

    Makinde said that witnessing the 80th birthday celebration made the day a special day for him and described Ladoja as a leading light in Ibadanland.

    He said the former governor still have a big role to play in the development of the state and people of the state would continue to look forward to his leadership.

    NAN reports that Muslim and Christian clerics, as well as traditionalists, offered prayers at the occasion for the celebrant.

    Dignitaries present also at the occasion included former Deputy Govenor of Oyo State, Rauf Olaniyan, Sen. Sarafadeen Alli, Sen. Fatai Buhari, politicians, businessmen and women, among others.

    Makinde reacts to shocking death of Oyo rep member

    Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde has described the demise of a House of Representatives member, Mr Olaide Akinremi, as shocking and a great loss to the state.

    The news of the death of Akinremi representing Ibadan North Federal Constituency in the Green Chamber was announced on Wednesday morning.

    Recall that t he two-term All Progressives Congress (APC) lawmaker and Chairman, House of Representatives Committee on Science Research Institutes, died in an Abuja hospital during a brief illness

    Makinde, in a statement issued by the Commissioner for Information and Civic Orientation, Mr Dotun Oyelade, said that Akinremi’s death was a great loss to the state.

    The governor, who prayed for the repose of the soul of the deceased, ordered that flags be flown at half-mast across the state in honour of the late lawmaker.

    Oyo gov, Makinde reshuffles cabinet

    Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde has effected a minor cabinet reshuffle.

    This is contained in a statement issued by Special Adviser to the Governor on Media, Mr Sulaimon Olanrewaju, on Tuesday in Ibadan.

    According to the statement, Mr Segun Olayiwola, Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters, has been moved to Ministry of Establishment and Training.

    The Commissioner for Trade, Industry, Investment and Cooperatives, Mr Ademola Ojo was named as the new Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters.

    The Commissioner for Establishment and Training, Mr Adeniyi Adebisi, is to take over the Ministry of Trade, Industry, Investment and Cooperatives.

    The postings, according to the statement, are with immediate effect.

    Cholera: Oyo Gov’t rolls out preventive measures in public schools

    The Oyo State government has rolled out some guidelines to ensure that food handlers in public schools follow strict hygiene practices to prevent contamination.

    The Executive Chairman, Oyo State Universal Basic Education Board, (SUBEB), Dr Nureni Adeniran made this known in the instructions released in Ibadan on Saturday.

    He advised headteachers to implement the measures to prevent cholera outbreaks in public basic schools in the state.

    The SUBEB boss said that the Oyo State government, through the board, “is on top of its game to ensure that public basic schools are taking steps to ensure the health and safety of students.”

    Adeniran urged parents, guardians, as well as school authorities to adhere to safety guidelines.

    He said the board would work with Education Secretaries, teachers and other stakeholders to ensure strict compliance.

    The advisory emphasised the importance of hand hygiene, recommending that children carry hand sanitisers and frequently wash their hands with soap and water, especially before meals and after using the restroom.

    Adeniran also recommended that schools keep Oral Rehydration Salt (ORS) available in their clinics to manage dehydration cases promptly.

    He said that schools should notify the state emergency hotline, 615, immediately, in case of any health emergency or suspected cholera cases.

    Adeniran said other preventive measures including comprehensive health talks on cholera prevention among learners and staff would be conducted regularly, as well as ensuring safe drinking practices.

    Afonja’s demise shocking, says Makinde

    Gov. Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has mourned the passing  of a former Minister of Labour and Productivity, Prince Ajibola Afonja, describing his death as shocking.

    This is contained in a statement issued by Mr Moses Also, Special Assistant to the Governor on Print Media,on Tuesday in Ibadan.

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Afonja ,also a former  Chairman of First Bank Plc ,hailed from Oyo town.

    He died on Sunday night at the University College Hospital, (UCH) Ibadan, at 82.

    Makinde described Afonja as an illustrious son of Oyo State, who represented and promoted the state well.

    He commiserated with the immediate family of the former minister, the people of Oyo town and people of  the state .

    He prayed to God to grant  soul of the deceased peaceful repose and stand by the family and the community he left behind.

    “I received the news of the death of a former Minister of Labour and Productivity, Prince Ajibola Afonja, with shock and sadness.

    “Prince Afonja was a great ambassador of Oyo State, who promoted the state and made immense contributions to its growth.

    “It is my prayer that God grant repose to his soul and grant him Aljana Firdausi,” the governor said

    Nigeria’s three most expensive states revealed

    Oyo, Kogi and Bauchi have all been identified as Nigeria’s three most expensive states on a year-on-year basis according to reports from the Nigeria Bureau of Statistics, (NBS)

    The latest April consumer price index and inflation report shows  all three states recorded highest in its  Items Inflation.

    The NBS’s latest April consumer price index and inflation report further showed , Lagos, Ondo, and Edo as the most expensive states in Nigeria on month-on-month basis.

    In the breakdown of  the NBS report, Kogi state has 40.84 per cent of all items in inflation, Bauchi (39.91 per cent), and Oyo (38.37 per cent).

    Conversely, Borno (26.09 per cent), Benue (27.53 per cent), and Taraba (28.69 per cent) recorded the slowest rise in Headline inflation on a Year-on-Year basis.

    Meanwhile, on a month-on-month basis, April 2024 recorded the highest increases in Lagos (4.52 per cent), Ondo (3.35 per cent), and Edo (3.27 per cent), while Kano (0.30 per cent), Ebonyi (0.97 per cent), and Adamawa (1.25 per cent) recorded the slowest rise in Month-on-Month inflation.

    Police parade ‘Auxiliary’ over alleged murder, armed robbery

    The Police Command in Oyo State, on Thursday, paraded a former Oyo State Park Management System (PMS), Mukaila Lamidi, popularly known as Auxiliary, over alleged murder, armed robbery and kidnapping.

    The Commissioner of Police, Adebola Hamzat, while briefing newsmen at the command’s headquarters in Ibadan, said that the command had, on June 2, 2023, declared Lamidi wanted.

    Hamzat listed the offences committed by the former PMS chairman to include: murder, attempted murder, arms dealing, armed robbery and kidnapping.

    He said that the suspect was declared wanted in furtherance of a well-coordinated intelligence-led raid by the police on May 30 and May 31, 2023 on the suspect’s Diamond Hotel residence at Alakia, where 78 suspects were arrested and weapons recovered.

    According to him, the exhibits recovered from the suspect’s residence and hotel include: two SMG riffles with two magazines, one AK-47 rifle, One Pump action riffle, nine locally-made pistols and two English pistols with magazines.

    Others were: 70 rounds of AK-47 ammunitions, 338 pieces of live cartridges, 62 expended, 13 pieces of 9-mm ammunition, nine jack knives, three axes and 400 pieces of long cutlasses, among others.

    Hamzat said that the suspect was recently arrested due to the collaborative efforts of the police and other sister security agencies in the state.

    “Furtherance of these, discreet intelligence-led search commenced for the sacked PMS chieftain, with the help of technology, collaborative efforts with sister services and community policing.

    “Many locations were identified, traced and combed for months until his recent arrest in a concerted effort with our sister services,” he said.

    Hamzat said that the suspect would be charged to court for the offences committed.

    He thanked the public for providing credible information to curb crime in the state.

    Hamzat pledged the command’s commitment to dealing with any criminally-motivated individual or group intending to flip the state retrogressively into the historical dark ages of the “Wild Wild West”.
