Oyo approves Olaoye’s selection as new Soun of Ogbomoso

The governor of Oyo state, Mr Seyi Makinde, has approved the appointment of Prince Afolabi Olaoye as the new Soun of Ogbomoso land.

News of the approval came in a statement issued Saturday evening in Ibadan by the state’s Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters, Mr Olusegun Olayiwola.

Olayiwola said the announcement followed the “long-drawn processes specified under the law”.

The commissioner stated that Gov. Makinde has since congratulated the new traditional ruler of Ogbomoso land on his ascension to the throne.

“The exalted position has placed Olaoye in the position to facilitate harmony, understanding and tolerance among his subjects.

“All sons and daughters of the ancient city of Ogbomoso are implored to work with the new king to consolidate on the successes of his forefathers,” he said.

    Olubadan suspends Egungun festival

The Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Lekan Balogun, on Sunday directed the suspension of the ongoing Egungun festival over reported cases of violence, arson and looting of shops.

A statement issued on Sunday in Ibadan by the Olubadan’s Personal Assistant on Media, Mr Oladele Ogunsola, said the atrocities were perpetrated by some hoodlums hiding under the cover of the Egungun festival in Ibadan.

Olubadan equally summoned all the leaders of masquerades known as ‘Alaagbaa’ in Ibadan land, to an emergency meeting on Monday afternoon, at the ancient Aliiwo palace, Agodi in Ibadan.

The traditional ruler expressed sadness over the reported cases of violence accompanying the annual festival, “the video of which has gone viral”.

He described the development as unfortunate and an affront on his palace, because he had warned against turning the festival into avenue to wreak havoc.

It would be recalled that Oba Balogun had on Wednesday condemned the violence reported during the festival at Alafara area.

“As if the warning was just a blabbing, the same thing was reported on Saturday on a scale that made the previous one a child’s play.

“I warned seriously against what is happening when the festival was to commence and the assurances I got then were that nothing untoward would accompany the festival.

“But, the reports coming to me have been at variance with those assurances I earlier got from the masquerades’ leaders.

“No responsible leader would fold his arms when majority of those subjects one superintendents over are in agony and living in perpetual fear just because of the activities of a few misguided elements who find it difficult to be law abiding.

“This is why the suspension clause has to be invoked and how long it lasts would be determined by the outcome of the meeting of Monday afternoon,” Olubadan said.

Oba Balogun insisted that the ugly past when the masquerade festival was usually a period of terror when perceived enemies became targets of attack and violence had been buried a long time ago and any attempt to exhume it would be met with stiff sanctions.

He called on the security agencies to remain up and doing, ensure no culprit is spared, “whoever flouts the suspension order under whatever guise, must be handled like a criminal.

“I’m for peace and there’s zero tolerance for whatever it is that will not give my people peace of mind,” Olubadan stated.

Man rapes wife’s apprentice as victim commits suicide in Oyo

Confusion in Eruwa community, Ibarapa East Local Government Area of Oyo State, as welder known as Ajibode, allegedly raped a sixteen-year-old Olayemi Agbeloba, the apprentice of his wife.

It was learnt that after the incident
    The victim committed suicide

Ajibode, who is a welder, was reported to have threatened to kill the minor if she revealed what happened to anyone.

It was learnt that the minor had been learning fashion design from Ajibode’s wife and was said to have been living with her boss to also assist her with domestic chores.

According to report by vanguard, things took another turn when the minor was sleeping in a room at the couple’s residence when Ajibode entered the room and allegedly raped the minor on June 23, 2023.

Worried by the development, the deceased, who was said to have been traumatised by Ajibode’s action, reportedly drank a substance suspected to be insecticide and died from the toxic substance.

Contacted, Agbeloba’s father, Sunday, who had been inconsolable since he got to know of the circumstances that influenced his daughter’s decision to allegedly take her life, said in a bid to get justice for his late daughter, he reported the case at the Eruwa Police Station.

He, however, lamented that the police, while investigating the case, arrested Ajibode, adding that the suspect had been boasting that justice would not prevail in the matter.

Sunday said; “Olayemi went to Ajibode’s wife’s house early this year because my wife and I decided that she should learn handiwork. She had been staying with Ajibode and his wife for about six months and suddenly, we were told that she died.”

“Later, we heard Ajibode had raped my daughter after which she drank an insecticide. This was confirmed by medical workers at the hospital she was taken to for treatment after she drank the insecticide.”

“At the hospital, we were also told that before my daughter died, she said Ajibode raped her and that was what made her drink the insecticide.”

“I reported the case at the Eruwa Police Station and he was arrested and released. Since then, Ajibode has been claiming that he knows people and that there is nothing we could do to him.”

“He raped my daughter and pushed her to commit suicide and he’s still very confident that he would go scot-free.”

Narrating her ordeal amid tears, mother of the deceased, Folake, demanded for justice over the death of her daughter.

She added that her late daughter once confided to her that Ajibode usually disturbed her while sleeping at night.

“I can’t speak now because they have taken my daughter away from me. Is it a crime for someone to go and learn a trade?” she asked.

Confirming the incident, the state Police Public Relations Officer, SP Adewale Osifeso, said: “A case of homicide was reported at the Eruwa Divisional Police Headquarters. It is also more like a case of defilement.”

  • My target is to become Olubadan – Ladoja

My target is to become Olubadan – Ladoja

High Chief Rashidi Ladoja, the Otun-Olubadan of Ibadanland, on Wednesday in Ibadan said he was not interested in wearing any other crown except the Olubadan crown.

Ladoja told newsmen at his residence after the Eid prayers that it has always been his target to become an Olubadan and was not going to wear any other crown

There had been widespread speculation that the Ibadan high chiefs would be installed as beaded crown-wearing kings from July 7.

Some high chiefs who were crowned during the administration of the late Abiola Ajimobi had surrendered the crowns after an out-of-court settlement.

This was to pave way for Oba Lekan Balogun’s ascension to the Olubadan throne.

However, Ladoja said information at his disposal revealed that the high chiefs were now seeking permission to resume wearing of their surrendered crowns.

Ladoja, a former governor of Oyo State, said it was illegal for any Ibadan high chief to think he can resume wearing an already-surrendered beaded crown.

He said there would not have been a new Olubadan of Ibadan by now if the high chiefs had failed to surrender their crowns and withdrew the case in court.

“I joined the Olubadan line on Oct. 1, 1993. I joined as ‘Jagun Olubadan’ and my target was to become Olubadan. I did not expect that I was going to wear any beaded crown on the way.

“If I wanted to do that, I would have become the ‘Baale’ of my village and I will be called ‘Baale’. Our role as high chiefs is to advise and support the Olubadan, not to wear crown with him,” Ladoja said.

The former governor said he as an individual was not interested in any other crown apart from that of Olubadan of Ibadanland, adding “only God chooses kings in Ibadan”.

Ladoja expressed dismay at the fact that some high chiefs want to short-circuit the system, saying such was alien to the Ibadan tradition.

He said that it was not fair or right to have high chiefs as kings, adding there was no need to mend what was not broken.

“I told them the story of Aliiwo. When Aliiwo was coming from Iwo, he passed through Lagun village where he left his followers to stay with other warriors in Ibadan.

“If he had wanted to become Onilagun of Lagun, he would have done so. But people who started Ibadan said that they want to rule themselves. They want to rule the villages from the town,” the Otun-Olubadan said.

The former governor added that he would however not go to court on the matter, saying there was no issue in the agitation of the high chiefs.

Ladoja said that any Ibadan indigene can go to court over such issues since every bonafide Ibadan man is a potential king.

  • We’re optimistic Tinubu will meet our demands – JOHESU

We’re optimistic Tinubu will meet our demands – JOHESU

The Joint Health Sector Unions (JOHESU) has expressed optimism that President Bola Tinubu Administration would meet its demand in improving the welfare of its members with the present economic realities.

One of the executives of JOHESU in Oyo State, Mr. Oladayo Olabampe, gave the assurance in an interview with NAN in Ibadan on Monday.

Olabampe, who also is the Chairman, Nigeria Union of Allied Health Professionals, Oyo State, said the amalgamated union of health workers had reached an agreement with the Federal Government over their issue.

He said that this gave them the benefit of the doubt that the new government would make good on their promises.

He said that was why it suspended its strike for 21 days, to enable the government work on the agreement, after which the union would review the situation and determine the next line of action.

“Meanwhile, we are seeing signs that they are serious about their promises. We are seeing progress,” he said.

He, however, lamented how the Oyo State Government had handled issues relating to their members at the state level.

“Our demands are different. While we have had a meeting with the Federal Government, it depends on various states because the demands of one state differ from another.

“For example, Osun has implemented the new hazard allowance, but Oyo State has not.

“So, each state will look at their peculiarity and their demands, have they been met? That will determine when their strike will end,” Olabampe said.

He noted that the government of Oyo State did not take the union seriously at first at the Hospital Management Board level

“And because of that the strike continues. And because of that, the board has called for a negotiation which will be held Tuesday, June 13.

“After the meeting, we will know if the union will suspend its strike at the state level or if it will continue.”
