2023: Prepare for your defeat, APC tells Makinde, PDP

The All Progressives Congress (APC) says no amount of fake news can save Gov. Seyi Makinde of Oyo State and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) from defeat in the 2023 general elections.

Its Publicity Secretary, Olawale Sadare, said in a statement on Tuesday in Ibadan, that PDP was allegedly behind the spread of fake news purportedly issued by one Alhaji Bashir Adeola, a Chieftain of APC in the state.

APC was reacting to a news report which claimed that Adeola, a spoke in condemnation of his party to favour PDP.

The APC spokesperson dismissed the said news as fake, saying that the name, Bashir Adeola, was a fictitious name.

According to him, the report was the handiwork of some desperados in power who had been overwhelmed by the political fireworks of Oyo APC as demonstrated in the last few months.

“We have painstakingly checked our party membership register and found no member by the name Bashiru Adeola.

“We, then wonder where the PDP media got the ghost to speak with them as a chieftain of Oyo APC,” he said.

Sadare said that no amount of such sponsored fake news as well as unsubtantiated claims against the opposition would stop Makinde and PDP from imminent sack in the forthcoming general elections.

He said that some funny characters around the governor felt that “this was the best way to mitigate the effects of political affliction befalling their administration and party every day”.

Sadare said that PDP felt it was an unhealthy development to keep losing its members and supporters to the opposition.

He said that Makinde has nobody to blame for the development, adding he could not eat his cake and have it.

“A governor who neither does well with governance, nor runs an all-inclusive government cannot have the trust of serious politicians and voters.

“They just package their usual lies and put fictitious names as the source whereas the so-called Bashir Adeola was without a known Ward, Local Government Area or traceable residence or office address.

“They came up with the latest spurious story aimed at discrediting APC in an attempt to water down the adverse effect of Hon. Olusegun Olaleye’s defection to the APC,” he said.

The APC spokesperson said that Olaleye had only retraced his step as he returned to the progressive fold few days after hundreds of PDP leaders and members left the party for APC in Oyo Federal Constituency.

“For the avoidance of doubt, we do not have any member or chieftain who bears the name mentioned and it is safe to say that the story was sponsored by the PDP to mislead the public.

“We are focussed on our electioneering campaigns as a serious political party whose candidates have all it takes to win the forthcoming elections in the state,” he said.

Sadare urged the electorate to disregard myriad of fake news being churned out to create soft landing for Makinde, who had already lost his reelection bid before the day of the poll.

APC, PDP trade words over killing of party member in Oyo

The All Progressives Congress (APC), Oyo State chapter has called on the police to investigate the killing of Hakeem Mudashiru, a Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) member in Oyo town.

The call came, even as PDP in the state accused APC of sponsoring a ‘killer squad’ to assassinate its member.

Mudashiru was reportedly hacked to death by hoodlums at his family compound in Oyo East Local Government Area of the state on Wednesday.

APC, in a statement issued by its Publicity Secretary, Olawale Sadare, and made available to newsmen on Thursday in Ibadan, urged the police to investigate those accusing it of behind the killing.

It condemned the ruling party for allegedly playing politics with issues relating to security of lives and property in the state.

“Oyo town is not a recluse, as it is populated by good people who had been living in peace and tranquility until the present PDP administration of Gov. Seyi Makinde came with its mission of domestic terrorism.

“For the avoidance of doubt, some leaders of our great party (APC) were in Oyo town to welcome some defectors from PDP, Accord and other parties,” it said.

APC said that the ceremony went well and that everybody present, including the party’s candidates, leaders as well as party supporters, enjoyed the atmosphere devoid of violence or tension.

The party said that it was not aware of any violent attack recorded in Oyo town yesterday.

“We urge the state police command to investigate the allegation, with a view to establishing the fact and punishing the culprits, particularly those making false allegations against our party,” it said.

However, the PDP, in a statement issued by its Publicity Secretary, Akeem Olatunji, described the attack as unfortunate.

The party pointed fingers at APC, accusing it of sponsoring a ‘killer-squad’ to assassinate its member.

While stating that some of its members also sustained varying degrees of injuries during the attack, PDP appealed to the state Commissioner of Police, Adebowale Williams, to bring the culprits to book.

“Despite the peace accord APC entered into alongside other political parties in the state, ahead of the 2023 general elections, the opposition party has continued its sustained and coordinated attacks against our members.

“We are aware that these attacks are fully sanctioned and backed by certain individuals, including some APC candidates who are not only desperate to win the 2023 elections by either ‘hook or crook’, but also doing so at whatever cost,” PDP said.

The Executive Vice Chairman/CE NASENI, Engr. Mohammed Sani Haruna while flagging off the training in Ibadan today said that NASENI was carrying out President Muhammadu Buhari’s directive saying “the time had come to put an end to the habit of giving out technical jobs meant for Nigerians to foreigners or migrants from neighbouring countries” hence President Buhari’s approval of the on-going special training for Plumbers operating in Ibadan, Oyo State.

President Muhammadu Buhari is the Chairman, Governing Board of NASENI.

With the training as a hands-on empowerment programme, Professor Haruna explained, “President Buhari’s intention is the prosperity of the youths and job satisfaction so they could take their plumbing work seriously and move to the highest level of efficiency and professionalism in plumbing”

The training programme targets inputting in the trainees Modern Skills, Acquisition and training on modern methods of Plumbing and its applications. The youths selected from Oyo State are benefiting from the first phase of the programme targeted at those who are already in the profession of plumbing. The capacity building focuses on reskilling the plumbers to handle installations and maintenance of plumbing works with modern techniques, tools, diagnostics and equipment.

According to the study carried out which led to the presidential directive; it was observed in Ibadan metropolis that delivery of plumbing works had become problematic because residents and house owners are experiencing poor jobs and finishing of plumbing works. Therefore empowering the youths, he said and especially a critical subsector like plumbing is critical to housing and general construction, he said. He also disclosed that youths empowerment programme was central to his legislative agenda, adding, that the Ibadan North Federal constituency zone was lucky for being the first beneficiary of the programme by the Federal Government in South west.

He charged the trainees to use the equipment and tools to help themselves to increase their efficiency in the course of carrying out their tasks on site.

The presidential mandate to NASENI in the on-going exercise is to move round the 36 States of the country to empower 100 youths in each location on such areas and skills where it is observed that critical vocational skill lacks efficiency and therefore needing upgrades, new skills acquisition, tools and equipment to advance such identified vocation.

POS transactions records 29.3% growth, hit N4.6 trillion in 7 months

The value of cashless transactions made via Point of Sales, POS in Nigeria recorded a huge leap from January to July 2022 as the figures hit N4.6 trillion.

According to data from the Nigeria Inter-Bank Settlement System (NIBSS), the figure, when compared to N3.56 trillion recorded in the corresponding period of 2021, represents a 29.3% increase and when compared to the value of POS transactions in 2020 represents a 90.3% increase.

Also, the volume of transactions rose by 25% year-on-year from N543.7 million to N679.8 million in the same period.

This increment confirms the gradual acceptance of cashless transactions within the Nigerian commercial sphere.

POS transactions have been selected as the mode of transferring and sometimes, receiving cash within the last five years as Nigerians have differed in the mode of transaction due to the convenience it offers compared to the time they would have spent in the bank.

POS usage as a means of financial transactions peaked during the COVID-19 lockdown in 2020 when major financial institutions had completely shut down their services.

Within the period, data from NIBSS revealed that over 380 million PoS payment platforms were registered in Nigeria, which translated to a total transaction value of N2.8 trillion.

The locations noted to have the highest share of the PoS transactions were the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Lagos, Rivers, Oyo and Delta states.

Apart from making withdrawals, PoS has also served as a means of sending cash as the process has become the closest means to accessing banking products as most customers in rural areas with no access to banking facilities have found the use of the service convenient.

It has also served as a means of employment as most youths have engaged themselves in the business due to its profitability and very low running costs.
