Why I chose Real Madrid over Barca – Ozil

Mesut Ozil has revealed why he chose Real Madrid over Barcelona when leaving Werder Bremen.

At the age of 34, Ozil announced his retirement on March 22, 2023.

He told Marca: “It was a decision between Real Madrid and Barcelona. And in the end it was not a matter of money.

“I don’t know if this is known, but I visited Madrid and Barcelona at that time and the difference was José Mourinho. Mou gave me a VIP visit to Real Madrid. He took me to see the stadium and all the trophies they had won. That gave me goosebumps.

“The visit to Barcelona was less enthusiastic and what was more disappointing is that Pep Guardiola didn’t bother to meet me. Before that trip I really liked Barcelona’s style of football and I could really imagine playing with them, but Madrid went all out. So José Mourinho was without a doubt the most important factor in my decision.

“After my visits, my decision was one hundred percent clear: I wanted to be a Madridista.”

Ozil also said: “The Madrid fans are really incredible. Even ten years after leaving Madrid, I continue to receive spectacular support and affection from the fans. It’s really amazing. I think we spent three very good years together, three years in which the fans enjoyed themselves and saw that I gave everything for the club. I’m going to be honest, I didn’t expect this support to continue for so long, so I can only thank the madridistas.”

Manchester United boss Ralf Rangnick turned down the manager’s job at Arsenal, it has been revealed.

After the retirement of Arsene Wenger in 2018, Arsenal went well down the road to appointing Rangnick as the Frenchman’s replacement, reports Kicker.

However, the German pulled out of negotiations after learning Arsenal had renewed the contract of Mesut Ozil without his say-so.

The source states Rangnick walked out on the deal because of extending the contract “without consultation […] with playmaker diva Mesut Özil”. Instead, the Gunners turned to Unai Emery.

Rangnick enjoyed a winning start with United on Sunday with victory over Crystal Palace.

In his post-match analysis for BT Sport, Crouch, 40, said: “I thought Ziyech and Havertz were very disappointing. I think Havertz reminds me of Ozil.

“He does things where it comes easy to him and he looks technically brilliant.

“But he can also look lazy and laboured at times and he can frustrate you and I thought tonight they were frustrating.”

Real Madrid President, Florentino Perez, has in an audio recording, revealed how Jose Mourinho made Mesut Ozil dump his girl while they were at Real Madrid.

A series of audio recordings from 2012 were released by Spanish newspaper, El Confidencial where the Real Madrid president was caught badmouthing some of his then players and coaching staff, including Mourinho.

In the latest batch, Perez’s thoughts on former Real star, Mesut Ozil have been revealed.

Speaking about Ozil, he said, “[Ozil] came here aged 21. He is third generation Turk and then he discovers Madrid. There was nothing, no Turks, dicks, third generation or girlfriend.

“He sent his girlfriend away and changed his lifestyle, falling for an Italian model from Milan. He had a private jet, so he would fly out there, have sex and come back.

“Then one day, he annoyed Jose Mourinho, who jokingly said ‘Hey Ozil, idiot, let me tell you something as if I were your father, because this girl you’re going out with has f**ked everyone at Inter and AC Milan, including the coaching staff of both teams.’ [Ozil] ended up leaving her.”

Two senior Arsenal players battle for Ozil’s No10 shirt

Two Arsenal players are battling for Mesut Ozil’s old No10 shirt.

ESPN says Fenerbahce snapped the 32-year-old up on a free transfer where he has made nine appearances in all competitions.

It has left the No10 vacant and a number of players have asked to take on the ex-Real Madrid star’s shirt.

Alexandre Lacazette has demanded that he be given the number despite currently occupying the No.9 kit – a shirt predominantly worn by the main striker.

However, the Frenchman is said to prefer the No.10, the same kit he wore at Lyon in his final four seasons at the club where he caught the eye of Arsenal.

The other looking to land the kit is club captain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, despite being on record saying that he prefers to be the No.14.

A handful of players at Arsenal are also in the running, including Willian – who currently dons the No.22.

The Brazilian was No.10 at Chelsea in his final year but it remains to be seen whether the forward will be at Arsenal next season.

REVEALED: Arsenal still paying over 90% of Ozil’s wages at Fenerbahce

Premier League side Arsenal are still paying over 90 per cent of Mesut Ozil’s wages as he plays for Fenerbahce.

Ozil, who was frozen out by manager Mikel Arteta at the start of the season and left out of the club’s squad, joined Fenerbahce on a free transfer during the January transfer window.

But instead of freeing themselves of Ozil’s huge contract once and for all, it has been reported that the Gunners are continuing to pay the majority of the star’s wages.

The Athletic reports Arsenal are paying ‘more than 90 per cent’ of the 32-year-old’s previous £350,000-a-week salary until the end of June.

Ozil’s Arsenal deal had been due to expire this summer and an agreement was reached to terminate the contract over five months early.

However, the former Real Madrid playmaker managed to negotiate keeping his full pay until the summer, after which he will take a hefty cut for the remaining three years of his deal with Fenerbahce.

The Turkish side are currently paying less than than £35,000 a week towards Ozil’s salary.

  • Ozil wasn’t given fair opportunity at Arsenal – Wilshere

Ozil wasn’t given fair opportunity at Arsenal – Wilshere

Fenerbahce-bound Mesut Ozil wasn’t given “fair opportunity” in his final year at Arsenal, according to Jack Wilshere.

Mikel Arteta left Ozil out of his Premier League and Europa League squads at the start of the season, which was the final straw for a player whose last appearance for Arsenal came way back in March.

He questioned the club’s loyalty in the wake of that decision, and Wilshere says he can relate to how his old team-mate must have felt after being frozen out.

“But no, I didn’t speak to him. I’m sure it was as difficult for him [to not be playing] as it was for me. It’s not nice to be in a position where you’re not given that opportunity – a fair opportunity – to try and challenge for a place in the team.

“Listen, people can have bad games and miss out on the team, but to not be given an opportunity is tough, and was tough, to take.

“So I’m happy that he has found happiness and hopefully he can go on to be successful in Turkey.”
