Northern governors allege plot to blackmail forum over Pantami

The Northern States Governor’s Forum says it has uncovered a plans by a shadow group to engage in a smear campaign against the forum as well as its chairman and governor of Plateau State, Rt. Hon. Simon Bako Lalong.

This was revealed in a statement by spokesman to the governor, Dr. Makut Simon Macham.

The forum expressed disgust over campaign of calumny in which the group has gone, to the extent of printing and circulating posters to the effect that it is supporting the Minister of Communication Technology and Digital Economy, Dr. Isa Pantami over some statements he is said to have made in the past.

The uncovered plan shows that those behind the propaganda publication are political interests that are bent on dragging the forum into the controversy by widely circulating the posters on social media and pasting same across the country with a view to tarnishing the image of the body and its members.

For the avoidance of doubt, the forum wishes to state that it has no intention of being dragged into the matter, as the minister has provided his response to the issue which does not need the validation or denial of the forum.

The statement further adviced members of the public to beware of the antics of such sponsored mischief makers and should therefore disregard such propaganda posters, which only intend to serve the selfish interests of those behind them.

Pantami needs to step aside for investigation – PFN leader

The Chairman of the Financial Accountability Council of the Pentocostal Fellowship of Nigeria, Bishop Charles Ighele, has advised the embattled Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Isa Pantami, to step aside for proper investigations to be conducted over the allegations of his link to terrorist organisations.

Ighele also called on the Presidency to investigate the allegations levelled against the minister.

While describing security as a sensitive matter that should be handled with all the seriousness it deserves, the cleric urged the government to establish the facts surrounding Pantami’s case even if the matter in question took place before his elevation to his current office.

He said, “The Federal Government should not treat the issue with kid gloves, they should dig deeper and establish the fact surrounding the Minister’s alleged romance with terror groups before his appointment to office. “Government needs to get more information from international community.

“The issues involved here are so serious that you are never going to convince the United States, Britain and other international community that you are fighting terrorism.

“It is very possible that he has repented of that extra Islamic attitude. But many people might not be convinced that he has repented. Ditto for security agencies and the international community. They might think that he wants to remain in office, that’s why he said what he has said so far.

The cleric further said, “For the sake of the nation and citizens, the Minister should step aside. There are things that for the sake of the society and nation you forego. So, the Federal Government may believe him but the international community won’t. I think it is more honourable for Pantami, a Muslim cleric himself, to resign, as a token of his remorse for what he said years before.

“The minister should take a cue from the former Minister of Finance, Kemi Adeosun, who honourably resigned when the occasion was loudest.

There are times that public opinion is powerful but all I know is that what will give him honour is to resign. But if he chooses to remain in office and his tenure expires, he has lost the honour forever and the international community will not respect him too. So, he has to choose between the office that may not last between now and two years or resign now and gain honour forever. If I should counsel him, I’ll ask him to resign.”

Forces against me plotting to release doctored videos to damage my reputation – Pantami

The embattled Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Isa Pantami, on Monday raised the alarm that some unnamed persons were planning to release some doctored videos against him.

Pantami, who disclosed this in a statement issued in Abuja by his media aide, Uwa Suleiman, said the move was the next stage of the forces against him.

There had been calls for the resignation of the minister after his controversial comments on the activities of terrorists emerged on social media.

Although the minister had renounced the comments and insisted that he made them out of immaturity in the past, many Nigerians still insisted that he should resign or be sacked.

But on Monday, Pantami through his aide said, “We are in receipt of credible intelligence that the same forces, who have been championing a well-coordinated and richly funded campaign against Pantami, are now unto the next stage of their diabolic project.

“This time round, the forces of evil are shopping for willing partners as well as their usual avenues to release doctored videos purporting to show the minister in an alleged compromising condition as a way of creating injury on his image.

“We are least surprised by this recent move which is a clear intensification of their desperation, having failed in their assault on the personality of the minister, despite their previous efforts.”

The minister said the notice was to alert the public to the latest plan and to warn the perpetrators about the consequences of such action.

The statement indicated that the minister would not sit idly to see his reputation as a community leader, Islamic scholar and public servant being muddled in the mud by paid agents.

It warned of consequences, although the minister was mute on what such consequences could be.

Nigeria needs more Pantami’s in Power – Gumi

Islamic cleric, Ahmad Gumi, has warned that Nigerians will regret it if the Minister of Communication and Digital Economy, Isa Ali Pantami is removed from office.

Nigerians had continually mounted pressure on the presidency to sack the minister while some called for his resignation following the re-emergence of his public declaration of support for terrorist groups in the past.

But Gumi, a Kaduna-based Islamic preacher who had consistently called for negotiations with bandits stated that Pantami was not sympathetic towards terrorists, Peoples Gazette reported.

Gumi, who was speaking in an interview with Roots TV said the embattled minister was rather a nation-builder who was working to attract other youths of his Ilk to support the government.

He said “Show me one person he has killed. He has not killed anybody. He has not ordered the killing of anybody. The man is stabilising a government among a section of youths which we want them to come and join in nation-building.”

Gumi also said Pantami was a victim of wicked campaigns to remove him from office.

“And you people are fighting them. No. You should get more people like Pantami and put them in power. Don’t remove him. You’ll regret,” he warned.

Pantami: Buhari-led govt unserious about fight against terrorism – PFN

The Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria has decried the continuous retention of the Minister of Communication and Digital Economy, Isah Pantami, in the cabinet of President Muhammadu Buhari, describing the development as absurd and ludicrous.

It also noted that the defence of the embattled minister by the Buhari administration shows that the government is not serious about its fight against Boko Haram insurgency and other related security challenges facing the country.

The president of the body, Bishop Francis Wale Oke, in a statement said the controversy currently generated around the minister is needless, as he (Pantami) ought to have resigned or be sacked by now on account of his proven past support for al-Qaida, Boko Haram and other insurgents.

In a statement issued on Monday by the PFN Media Department as signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Bishop Emmah Gospel Isong, the PFN president lamented that the Buhari’s government’s supposed fight against insurgency, banditry and the like is, after all, a facade.

“To us at the PFN, the Buhari government is not sincere in its alleged war against Boko Haram, killer herdsmen and other criminalities.

“Do we have to look beyond our shoulders for the sponsors of the mindless killings and bloodshed currently ravaging our country? The answer is no! The government knows them.”

The PFN said that things would continue to go awry for the nation unless the government and its people learn to be just and righteous, demanding that those behind various heinous crimes in the country be made to face the wrath of law no matter how highly placed.

Wale Oke said that criminal activities have been festering under this administration due to the way it has been treating those behind it with kid gloves.

“We want to urge President Buhari to rise above primordial sentiments and sectional attachments in dealing with the issue at hand. We want Nigeria that we can proudly call our own.”

He also called on the government to do all within its reach to ensure that the sponsors of criminal activities in the country are not only fished out but brought to justice in accordance with the law of the land

    By Hope Eghagha

Emeka: I’m fed up with just everything in the country! No light. No governance. No leadership. No equity. No justice. No security. No fairness! No this, no that! Phew! I regret being born here and I think I should migrate to America now that Donald Trump has been booted out of the White House! Canada is waiting with open arms too!

Obukohwo: Hehehehehehe! Migration is not easy these days even without HRM Donald Trump the White Supremacist. Only God is available here in our country now. God! God! God! By the way business and life too are still available!

Aboki: Life? Is there life in this country? If there is life, it is too cheap. I can’t count how many people I know who have been slaughtered by Boko Haram or kidnapped or assaulted by bandits! Too many have been sent to paradise even when they were not ready!

Obukohwo: If they are in paradise, why should anyone complain? Its better to go to paradise than remain in tis hole, especially we people of the Niger Delta who have been recolonized. Except we are not sure the dead men and women are really in paradise!

Kalio: Even you Aboki? Complaining too about Nigeria? Come on! You guys are having a ball with power. This is interesting. We in the south are angry with the northerners who are ravaging our bushes, killing people, and destroying crops!

Aboki: This is the mistake you guys make about the challenges in the country. You think that we are happy in the north and that all northerners support the charade of governance in Abuja. My brother, insecurity is worse in the north. Anger against the government is higher in the north than in the south, believe me. The power elite in the north may be happy. Not so the ordinary people for whom hunger and uncertainty have become too familiar. Maiduguri and its environs are under siege. Zamfara and Katsina states are constantly under attacks. Katsina the president’s home state is unsafe. What about Kaduna? The latest is that a university in Kaduna was attacked, a security man killed, and undergraduates kidnapped. They have moved away from kidnapping secondary school students to abducting undergraduates.

Emeka: I think it’s because the president comes from the north and has appointed mainly northerners to key positions in the country. So, there is a deep anti-north sentiment in the country!

Aboki: It is unfortunate. Most of those appointed to high office look after themselves. The level of poverty in my side of the country is scary. And the people are waking up now. As things stand, most of those appointees cannot visit their villages and hometowns! Victims of banditry are Christians and Muslims. Indeed, we need to publish the names of all victims of Boko Haram attacks. We need to have a figure.

Kalio: Figure of the number dead? Government is more interested in the number of cows! May God save us, save us from ourselves, save us from our rulers, and save us from official nepotism.
Tunde: God doesn’t take us seriously anymore. He has given up on us because of our foolish ways. So, calling God! God! God! is in vain! Heaven helps those who help themselves!
Emeka: As for business, look at the climate. Inflation and a horrible exchange rate. The people don’t have money to buy things. The businessman is complaining, the seller is complaining, and the buyer is complaining too! Everything is jagajaga!

Obukohwo: I thank God still. We are better than Zimbabwe, Venezuela, or Lebanon! It could have been worse! We still get food items to buy. We still manage to import stuff. Somehow, we are coasting along. Out of the jagajaga, something good will come out when we get to rock bottom!

Aboki: For how long? How long shall we just depend on the elements to smile at us without our rulers doing anything concrete? Islam does not support jagajaga government. Is Saudi Arabia jagajaga? Or Iran? Indonesia?

Kalio: That is the big question. It’s the ‘big three’ ethnic groups that have got us into this mess. You believe the national patrimony is yours and initiate policies to favour your region. Now everyone is suffering!

Emeka: We the Igbo may be among the so-called ‘big three’ in terms of population, in the power equation, we are nowhere. The powers-that-be are bent on preventing an Igbo man from becoming president. It is unfair, antithetical to the ideals and practice of federalism. Nobody should be prevented from aspiring to the presidency on account of their ethnic background.

Aboki: In principle, I support the view that rotation should now favour the Igbo. But let me warn you in advance: it is no guarantee to development. As the people of the northern part of the country! Indeed, it could become an albatross. If an Igbo man as president tries to restructure the country, he could be accused of continuing the struggle for Biafra! So justice and fairness on that part of whoever becomes president is more important.

Kalio: I agree with Aboki. What did, how did the Jonathan presidency favour the Izon people or the South-south? Nothing. We gained nothing. I wish Jonathan had pushed ahead with the recommendations of the National Confab!
Emeka: Justice? Ok. Let an Igbo man be president first. Then you can start to talk about other yardsticks. Please, the tension in the south east is frightening.

Obukohwo: The tension in the whole country is frightening. We do not know what the next day could bring. Too many brigands spring up everyday around the country. Too many acts of impunity. The federal government is losing control.
Tunde: The federal government is sabotaging itself. I wonder what a character like Isa Pantami is still doing in the cabinet. Ive always believed that there are fifth columnists within the government who undermine the efforts of Mr. President. Something must be done.

Aboki: But the man says he has changed or dropped his extreme views on non-Muslims! Not that I believe him though. He should have enough gumption to own up to his past and resign. His days and actions are already tainted. This is my worry with some of my Muslim brothers. They make provocative statements to curry favour from some Islamic groups.
Emeka: It is good to talk. In beer parlour discussions, people tar the rest with one brush. We must return to this idea of publishing the names of victims. It will give us a number, add humanity to the colossal losses and make us review the situation.

Obukohwo: Exactly, let us meet again and continue the dialogue. I know that if there is a conflagration, the elite in the north and the south would jump into airplanes and abandon us all here.

Tunde: Yes, the ordinary people in the north and south should come together and tell the current rulers that ‘enough I enough!
    All: Yes!

Aboki: It’s the way to go!

  • Mr. President, Let this Minister Go – Chidi Amuta

Mr. President, Let this Minister Go – Chidi Amuta

    Chidi Amuta

President Buhari’s Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Sheikh Isa Ali Ibrahim Pantami, could have casually slithered through public office with scant notice if he could delete his past. Unfortunately he cannot run faster than the jagged shadows from his past. In these parts, a ministerial portfolio with an oversized office and some fancy title can disguise many past inadequacies and thrust otherwise tainted individuals from relative anonymity to dizzying national prominence. Mr. Pantami easily fits into this familiar mould, having had scant national name recognition before joining government in 2016. But as a cabinet minister, he has recently stumbled on additional prominence by dint of a familiar media mishap.

Some media outlets published (rather prematurelyand, for now, falsely) that the minister is on some US terrorist watch list. This has sent the minister and his foot soldiers scampering around social and conventional media outlets in search of mitigation. The minister’s specific contention is that he is not on any US watch or black list as variously portrayed by the errant media. No one has yet heard from the US State Department on the matter. What the minister is nervous about is the fake news of the US watch list;not his past flirtations and murky alignments with bad people and dangerous organizations.

Whether or not he is on the terrorist watch list of the US or any other country, what has come out is that Mr. Pantami has a documented history of views, activities and associations that make him a fit candidate for both domestic and international close watch on matters relating to terrorist support and sympathies. By the same token, these attributes make him an unfit person to hold high public office in a nation that is part of the global campaign against terrorism and extremism. The current elevated attention on him is simply because his past actions and alignments do not fit the profile of someone who should be entrusted with a strategic public office.

In spite of feverish efforts to deal with the fake newsin question, however, Mr. Pantami has found himself entangled in a sticky web from his recent past. His most lethal adversaries are in fact ghosts from anuntidy past of bad behavior, ugly associations and bad choice of role models. As it turns out, Mr. Pantami was up to the time of his appointment into government an influential Islamic scholar and preacher, fundamentalist zealot, valiant extremist and an avid sympathizer and admirer of major terrorists.

It is disturbing that in spite of the cascade of anomalies in the Pantami affair, the Presidency, through Mr. Garba Shenu, Buhari’s media Special Assistant, has weighed in to protect Pantami from genuine public demands that he be held accountable for his past. It is of course a blatant falsehood to claim that Pantami was too young at the time of his untidy extremist activities. From available records, Mr. Pamtami is currently 48 years old. He was clearly a mature and well educated adult as at the time he was proselytizing for extremists prior to his ministerial appointment in 2019, having been the Director General of the National Information Technology Development Agency (NTDA) from 2016. He is bodoubt an outstanding Islamic scholar with deeply ingrained convictions, achieving the uncommon feat of memorizing the Koran at the remarkable age of 13.

In any case, in every political context, the demons that fell major public figures are most likely to come from a past of unguarded actions. Even the diversionary claim that Mr. Pantami is the victim of a plot by Telcos and other interests to get even with him on policy grounds in a bid to protect and advance their interests is hollow. These interests did not deliver those fiery jihadist sermons or direct Mr. Pantami to issue fatwas against innocent Nigerian non muslims or direct those feverish endorsements of Osama Bin Ladin, the Taliban and Boko Haram. Moreover, documentary evidence of Pantami’sextremist career highlights make nonsense of the Presidency’s weak and rambling defense.

In a recent column, his friend, Farooq Kperogi, disclosed very disconcerting details from Pantami’spast. It is a past of active pro jihadist views and subversive sectarian activities. Drawing mostly from the publication, Peoples Gazette, we are treated to the highpoints of some of Pantami’s past views and sermons. Mr. Pantami has serially sermonized in favour of jihadists and terrorists. He is on record to have advocated acts of terror against fellow Nigerian non-Muslims. He once volunteered to lead jihadist warriors to avenge the death of muslims that fell victim of sectarian and communal violence in parts of Plateau and Nassarawa states. He has openly identifying with Boko Haram, advocating their right to violent acts of terror and justifying their apocalyptic zealotry and violent campaigns of bombings and killings.

There is videographic and textual evidence of a series of fundamentalist sermons mostly endorsing violence and terrorist acts against non-Muslims.

For instance, in one of them cited by Prof. Perogi, Pantami describes himself as always very ‘happy’ when ‘unbelievers are being killed by jihadist terrorists. He once justified killings by Boko Haram as acts of revolt against an unjust Nigerian state. He has therefore advocated for amnesty for Boko Haram militants in the manner of the Niger Delta militants. In the process, Mr. Pamtami vicariously elevatedIslamic jihadist terrorism to the pedestal of a legitimate political agitation for equity by aggrieved citizens. In one of the sources, Mr. Pantami is on record as being stoutly opposed to the government’s war against the terrorists and insurgents, characterizing it as a ‘cheapening’ of the blood of fellow muslims! Mr. Kperogi cites a particularly scathing twenty minute long sermon in which Sheikh Pantami concludes with the prayer: “Oh God, give victory to the Taliban and to Al Qaeda”, having previously confessed his open admiration for Osama Bin Laden.

Similarly, a trove of files, intelligence chatter and leaks from a broad range of other sources seem to confirm Pantami’s alliances and activities. Chatter from international counter terrorism organizations and active military commands operating in the Sahel have also included Pantami’s name among jihadist influencers of note in West Africa. Background briefing documents for both the US military’s Africa Command (AFRICOM) and the French military operation in the Sahel code named ‘Operation Barkane as well as the dedicated French force in northern Mali code named “Operation Servalmention the major ideological influencers of jihadist extremism in the Sahel which include Mr. Pantami. Major scholars who have written on Boko Haram have cited some of his sermons as well. As it turns out, Pantami’s past flirtations with fundamentalist extremism and Salafist ideologies were not merely episodic or accidental. They were systematic and sustained throughout his preaching career. The bottom line of these sources is that he has been consistently associated with the popularization of extremist Salafist ideologies in Nigeria.

In sum, Mr. Pantami comes out in these revelations as an active advocate of jihadist violence and a subscriber to dangerous sectarian ideologies. As a free citizen, however, Pantami remains free to hold beliefs and subscribe to faiths and ideologies that appeal to him but most of his past activities, views and affiliations run counter to the interests of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and the harmonious coexistenceof its peoples.

Perhaps the Pantami debacle would have been easier to wave off if his cabinet portfolio was a less strategic one. It is chilling that Mr. Pantami presides over what is arguably the most strategic ministry in the country. A self confessed pro- Al Queda, pro –BokoHaram and fundamentalist extremist is in charge of the nation’s entire telecommunications infrastructure and network, satellite communications, internet access and connectivity and vital citizens digital data base.

The same person is presiding over all of the nation’s corporate and private citizens’ Bank Verification Numbers (BVN), ongoing National Identification Number(NIN) system, International Passport digital data base etc. And when the ongoing merging of all citizens personal digital data is completed, Mr. Pantami’s ministry will be presiding over the telephone numbers, internet activities, personal data, financial data, travel information, voter registration data, drivers license data etc. of at least 180 million Nigerians! All this in a

country that now boasts some of the best digital technology experts in the world. It is of course immaterial that Mr. Pantami may possess the requisite expertise. The concern should be to what uses he could put the information at his disposal given his embarrassing antecedents.

The case of minister Pantami throws into bold relief some very embarrassing lapses in our leadership selection and emplacement system. While our democracy has all the fancy infrastructure and institutional embellishments of even the most advanced democracies, our institutions have functioned more like the outposts of an authoritarian Banana Republic.

When it comes to Senate confirmations of ministerial nominees, our lazy ‘bow and go’ system has reduced the process of screening of public office nominees to a national televised comedy. Thus, in spite of his troubling past activities and views, Mr. Pantami was cleared for appointment as a Minister of the Federal Republic of Nigeria by our security agencies. He was subsequently confirmed for appointment by the Senate. In the case of cabinet rank appointments, it ought to be that the security services would dig into specific backgrounds of nominated individuals to equip the Senate with enough background information to make informed determinations.

Clearly, this process does not seem to have been followed in the case of Mr. Pantami and indeed many other ministerial confirmations in recent times, hence the parade of incompetence we are witnessing.

It is unfortunate that it has taken a media hoax to unearth these sad details from the past of a serving Minister of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. These revelations have now compelled Mr. Pantami to disavow his previous pro-jihadist utterances. He and his sympathizers have bombarded the internet withregrets about his past of infamy.

He is of course free to claim that he has now recanted his previous views and beliefs. Every free society has room for people to change their minds on matters of belief and conviction. But in matters of fundamentalist extremist radicalism, there is an even bigger requirement. There must be a systematic de-radicalization process before the individual extremistis adjudged truly repentant. I am not aware that Nigeria has ever put in place a proper de-radicalization programme for repentant terrorists and jihadists. I do not know if Mr. Pantami has enrolled in any such prrogramme yet. It is only natural and politically expedient for him to now plead repentance and disavowal of his past if only to save aninfluential and lucrative ministerial job. But there is nothing in these rearguard disavowals that protects the nation from the dangerous consequences of his dangerous curriculum vitae.

In a desperate bid to save his job, Mr. Pantami is playing into existing religious and partisan murkiness. The organization of Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has joined in calls for him to remain in office as, in their view, he has committed no offence. Sporadic voices from from contrary faith bodies and enlightened civil society are insisting that Pantami quits. Our partisan divide has predictablyjoined the fray. While the ruling APC has rushed to vindicate the minister, the opposition PDP has risen to join voices with calls for Mr. Pantami’s removal. There of course remains the still small voice of genuine patriotic outrage in the middle of the raging fire and storm of desperate partisanship and religiousfrenzy.

I think the Pantami debacle is above religious bigotry, partisan trade of abuses or the other silly dichotomies with which we derail sensible national discourse. This is not about the lazy recourse to North versus South among political devotees. Nor is it about the opportunistic recourse to Christian versus Muslim that zealots on bith sides use to trivialize serious matters. This is not about Mr. Pantami’sconstitutional right to hold beliefs or pray as many times as he wishes in a day, facing any direction on the compass. It is not even about whether his title remains Sheikh, Bishop, Imam, Arch Deacon or General Overseer. It is not about infringing on his right to enter into alignments, to endorse or subscribe to ideologies of his choice. It is not even about the religious role models he chooses to adopt for his personal sanity. The latter belong in the realm of his personal choices and right to freedom of worship and belief as are constitutionally guaranteed.

On the contrary, we are dealing with the fundamental realm of the higher ethical requirements for holding public office in a diverse republic with interlocking beliefs, alignments and faiths such as ours. It is aboutthe ground rules that govern leadership selection and the overriding higher imperatives of public office and the trust that ought to go with it. Even more important is the overarching imperative of national security as the strategic bottom line for all public offices in the nation.

It is therefore immaterial whether Mr. Pantami has repented and recanted. What is paramount is that his position as minister violates all known criteria for the selection of the leadership of any decent country. First, it is flagrant disregard of the principle of a ‘fit and proper person’ to hold high public office. This unscripted principle prescribes that citizens that must be approved to ascend to high office must not in their past or present conduct, activities or affiliations have engaged in acts unbecoming of an occupant of such high public office. Secondly, national security must take precedence in the consideration of individuals for high public office to ensure that such appointments do not in any way jeopardize or compromise national security. Thirdly, the public must be satisfied that the procedure by which persons are processed for high public office have integrity and follow approved due process.

Forgiveness of an errant public officer may be easy if it were personal. But the erosion of public trust resulting from an official’s error is more difficult. Once an occupant of a strategic public office is found to have betrayed public trust, there is only one route open to the individual concerned and the system he serves. As things now stand with Mr. Pantami, the plain unvarnished truth is that he can no longer be trusted with any public office let alone one as strategic as the one he currently occupies.

The way out of this unfortunate debacle is a route with only two lanes. The first and easiest is for Mr. Pantami to resign his appointment and tender an unreserved apology to all Nigerians. The other is a recourse to the prerogative of ultimate presidential responsibility. President Buhari needs to quickly relieve Mr. Pantami of his appointment in order to save himself, his administration and the nation the lingering embarrassment of the Minister’s continued stay in office.

For a nation that has repeatedly echoed its commitment to the global fight against terrorism, the Pantami entanglement is a consequential test. If the president keeps Pantami in office, he will have hugged terrorists and could lead the public to unsavory conclusions that can only load up hisalready bulging baggage of political liabilities.

Why Pantami can’t get the Kemi Adeosun treatment – Presidency

The Presidency on Friday insisted that the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari is standing firmly behind the embattled Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Dr Isa Pantami.

Appearing as a guest on monitored Channels Television programme, Presidential spokesman, Garba Shehu compared the case of Pantami with that of Mrs Kemi Adeosun, a former minister of finance.

Shehu said the Presidency would have acted differently if the communications minister had committed forgery.

“If Pantami had forged a certificate to come into office, the attitude (of the Presidency) would have been different,” he said.

The presidential spokesman added, “In the second case which is that of Pantami, you are probing the thoughts and this what Americans have called ‘McCarthyism’.

“You search the inner recesses of the minds of individuals, bring out things they have said, or they are about to say, or you think they would say, and use that against them.”

TheNewsGuru.com, TNG reports that Adeosun, a Commissioner of Finance in Ogun State between 2011 and 2015, was appointed as the Minister of Finance by President Muhammadu Buhari in November 2015.

About three years after serving in the President’s cabinet, the former minister was caught up in a controversy after a report emerged that she failed to participate in the compulsory National Youth Service Corps (NYSC).

The report indicated that Adeosun did not only fail to take part in the one-year scheme but also supposedly obtained a fake exemption certificate.

This sparked a widespread call for her removal, forcing the 54-year-old to resign as a minister in September 2018.

Pantami, on the other hand, was widely criticised by various individuals and groups for the comments he made many years ago in support of extremist groups.

Amid the calls for his resignation or removal by the President, the minister renounced his comments and said he was a changed person.

Unlike in the case of Adeosun, the Presidency declared its support for Pantami, saying he was being subjected to a “cancel campaign” instigated by those who seek his removal.

Presidency’s statement on Pantami confirms sympathy for terrorism – PDP

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) yesterday said the statement by the Buhari Presidency showed desperation to provide official cover to a terrorism apologist that further confirmed public and international apprehensions that the Buhari administration and the All Progressives Congress (APC) were patronising acts of terrorism in the country.

A statement by the National Publicity Secretary of the PDP, Kola Ologbondiyan said.

“Nigerians were traumatised that the Presidency could mount a hopeless defence and justification for the actions of the exposed Minister of Communication and Digital Economy, Isa Pantami, who had already confessed to supporting terrorist groups like al-Qaida and Taliban. “It is instructive to note that this anti-people stance has heightened public anxiety that the Buhari Presidency is a haven for traitors who are providing support to acts of terrorist activities in our nation.”

The PDP said the party held that it had further exposed why the Buhari Presidency had failed to decisively confront terrorism as well as why terrorists, bandits, kidnappers and insurgents were emboldened to ravage the nation and massacre our compatriots.

According to PDP, “It is inexcusable that the Buhari Presidency is showing grave insensitivity to the fact that thousands of Nigerians have been massacred, maimed and horrified; that hundreds of communities have been devastated and that our nation has been under siege because of the actions and public comments by individuals like Isa Pantami.

“Our party notes that if indeed, the Buhari Presidency has not found itself entangled, the least it ought to have done in the face of allegations against Pantami was to reassure Nigerians by first relieving Isa Pantami of his office and hand him over to the appropriate agency for deradicalisation,” the party said.

The PDP asserted that it was pertinent to point out that Isa Pantami had initially denied his support to terrorist groups and only admitted after he was overwhelmed by evidence; thus rubbishing the lame claims by the Buhari Presidency that the minister had turned a new leaf 20 years ago.

The PDP said that it holds that Isa Pantami belongs to the deradicalisation center and not in any way in the Federal Executive Council where he had been alleged of compromising the national security as evinced in his initial denials.

The party said that “This is in addition to allegations in the public space that the exposed minister had been compromising our national data as well as the NIN registration exercise, wherein aliens and invaders from other countries were alleged to have been registered as our citizens. These are issues that our party insists must be investigated by the Department of State Services (DSS).

“As a party, the PDP charges President Muhammadu Buhari to reassure the citizens by immediately withdrawing the statement from his Presidency, relieve Isa Pantami of his position as minister and take a bold step to flush out terrorist apologists from the Presidency.”, the PDP declared.

For siding Pantami, Nigerians now know Buhari’s stand on terrorism – Ezekwesili

Former Minister of Education, Oby Ezekwesili has condemned President, Muhammadu Buhari on his support for the Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Isa Pantami.

Recall TheNewsGuru( TNG) yesterday reported that the Presidency through the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, threw its weight behind Pantami amid calls for his resignation or sacking.

The calls followed revelations allegedly linking Pantami to terrorist organisations – Al-Qaeda and the Taliban. Sermons delivered by the Minister in the past had him allegedly sympathising with the terror groups,

a thing he says he has repented of.

Addressing calls for the Minister’s removal, Shehu in a statement yesterday said, “They do not really care what he may or may not have said some 20 years ago: that is merely the instrument they are using to attempt to ‘cancel’ him.”

He also said, “The administration stands behind Minister Pantami and all Nigerian citizens to ensure they receive fair treatment, fair prices, and fair protection in ICT services.”

Reacting, Ezekwesili revealed that the position of the Presidency in regards to the case involving Pantami shows the view of President Buhari on terrorism.

“In that singular act of siding with his Minister of Communication, @NGRPresident @MBuhari actually conveyed a message on his view of terrorism. Nigerians now know that his views align with that of his Minister. It is now left to Nigerians to convey whether we agree with them,” she tweeted.

“I do not agree with @NGRPresident @MBuhari and his Minister of Communication that any citizen can get away with such bloodcurdling rhetorics the latter made through the years. Worse that one who swore an oath to public office said and did the things @NigeriaGov has waved off.

“Yesterday’s action by our President was an anti-climax. He has persisted in badly managing our country’s diversity.

“Nigeria cannot at this stage avoid a genuine conversation about its future. The signs are all too obvious for all to see and act on.”
