For the sake of your children, take care of yourselves – Rita Edochie urges parents

Nollywood actress Rita Edochie has urged parents and prospective parents to always take proper care of themselves for the sake of their children.

The renowned actress, who took to her Instagram page @ritaedochie to give this advice, said that it was not that rosy for most children after the death of their parents.

According to her, no one else can take care of your children or be a better shepherd to them except you, especially when they are still minors.

“For the sake of your children, take care of yourselves, if you die and leave them behind you have simply exposed them to the vultures.

“No one can ever be a better shepherd to them except you.

“As parents, married or single, no one can adequately take care of your kids in your absence.

“You are the only person who can do that, you are the only one who can read their minds, pay attention to them, understand them and love them to the core.

“My prayer for you this morning is that you will live so long for your children and not die to leave them behind.

“If you think that when you give up on life and die, that those you think they care about would take care of your kids then that is a big lie.

“May God guide and preserve your lives, so as to live long for your children,” she wrote.

Rita Edochie who is currently the Women Leader of the Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN), began her acting career in the 1990s.

  • Hardship: Parents shun noodles as price soars

Hardship: Parents shun noodles as price soars

Some parents in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) on Friday said they have cut off noodles from their household menu as the price of the commodity continues to increase.

The parents said this in separate interviews with the News Agency of Nigeria in Abuja on Friday.

They said that their children’s favorite fast food was becoming unaffordable, hence the need for them to look for an alternative.

Hajiya Hauwa Bakari, a mother and a teacher, said that she used to prepare noodles for her children to take to school every Friday and to Islamic school on Sundays.

Bakari, however, said that the recent increase in the price of the item had made her change to other available food in the house.

“The last carton we bought before the present increase was N6, 000, for indomie noodles.

“By the time I went to get the same item after two weeks, it had increased to N8, 400.

“Now I learnt that the price is N18, 000 and above for the medium size of indomie noodles, while minimie noodles is N16, 000.

“I know it is one of my children’s favourite foods but with the way things are going, I cannot afford it so they have to eat whatever is available at home,’’ she said.

Bakari said that noodles have become a luxury for the ordinary Nigerian.

Mrs Kemi Samuel, a mother of four, said that she has decided to cut off noodles from her list of groceries, because it now looks like a waste of resources and unnecessary.

Samuel said that she would rather buy and cook more spaghetti with enough vegetables for the family, rather than using so much money on noodles that digests in no time.

She said that the decision was timely, since her children depended too much on noodles as it was easy to make.

Miss Rose Yakubu, a student, however, said that the high cost of noodles would not deter her from eating it.

Yakubu said that she liked the food, not because it is easy and fast to prepare, but because it saves her from buying other food ingredients to cook a proper meal.

“ If I have to cook rice for instance, I will have to buy oil, meat or fish, seasoning and vegetables, which I may not have enough money for,’’ she said.

A shop owner, Mr Shefiyu Abubakar, said that not many people can afford to buy noodles from his shop anymore.

He attributed this to the increase in the price of the commodity and the fact that many would prefer to buy other foodstuffs.

Abubakar said that the price for the hungry man indomie pack is between N18, 000 to N19, 000 per carton, while the smallest size sells for N10, 500.

“These prices were far lower in January and suddenly increased because of the inflation in the country.

“It is our  prayers that the prices of food go down soonest else, many may not be able to afford a meal per day,” Abubakar said.

ASUU Strike: Parents calls on FG, ASUU on speedy resolution

Some parents in the FCT have called on the Federal Government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) to reach a workable agreement to enable their children resume school.

Some of the affected parents, who spoke in separate interviews with newsmen in Abuja, said the strike was having a negative impact on their children and appealed for speedy resolution.

Thenewsguru.com recalls that ASUU had on Monday, extended the strike by 12 weeks which brings it to 20 weeks the students will stay at home over the failure of government and the union to reach a workable agreements.

The union through its President, Mr Emmanuel Osodeke had embarked on a nationwide warning strike from Feb. 14 to press home its demands, stressing that the action would continue until their demands were met.

The lecturers’ are demanding funding of the Revitalisation of Public Universities, Earned Academic Allowances, University Transparency Accountability Solution (UTAS) and promotion arrears.

Others are the renegotiation of the 2009 ASUU-FG Agreement and the inconsistency in the Integrated Personnel Payroll Information System.

However, Mr Silas Lagi, a parent in Gwagwalada Area Council, whose child is studying veterinary medicine at the University of Abuja, said that the strike had made his son shift focus to other things that he did not budget for.

Lagi said, “If politicians and government appointees, some of who are also in the education sector can purchase nomination forms worth N100 million, then there is something wrong with this country.

“After each episode of the strike, the children are no more focused and they end up not graduating within the stipulated years.

“My only pain is that the people in government are not feeling it because their own children are not in public schools but abroad or in private schools,” he said.

A parent in Abaji Area Council, Mr Musa Gimba said the parents’ appeal was for the government to listen to the union and reach an agreement to save the future generation.

“If the senators can have sitting and sleeping allowances, then the builders of these characters should be considered; they are the lecturers.

“The Federal Government should listen to the demands of the striking union so that our children can go back to school,” Gimba said.

Mrs Julian David, a parent in Kwali Area Council, said her son is a final year student at Nasarawa State University studying law “but cannot graduate because of the lingering strike’’.

“I am seriously appealing to the relevant authorities on behalf of parents to end the strike and make education a top priority and save the sector from imminent collapse.

“The Federal Government must at all costs meet the demands of the union to save the future of our children,” she said.

Meanwhile, the union during its last National Executive Council (NEC) meeting noted that it was disappointed that the government had not treated the matter with utmost urgency as expected of a reasonable, responsive, and well-meaning administration.

Sad! Niger Govt confirms NAF jet killed four kids of same parent

The Secretary to the Niger State Government, Ibrahim Matane, has confirmed the killing of six children by a NAF fighter jet in the state.

Matane said four of the children were of the same family, and the incident which occurred last week, is being investigated

He stated that the children were killed during a raid on the terrorists.

The incident occurred in the Kurebe Community, Shiroro Local Government Area of Niger State.

When asked if six children were killed by a NAF fighter jet, Matane replied, “Yes, it occurred, the government is looking into the incident and an investigation is ongoing to ascertain what happened.”

According to the chairperson Coalition of Shiroro Associations, Salis Sambo, who spoke to our correspondent, the children got killed when the fighter jets tried to bomb some terrorists who ran into the Community for safety.

He said the affected children were returning from the stream where they had gone to fetch water, adding that four of the children were members of the same family.

“It was the terrorists that they were targeting. That week, there were about four airstrikes carried out in Shiroro and scores of terrorists were killed. The terrorists ran into the community to take refuge and when the explosives were shelled, it affected the children. It wasn’t deliberate,” he added.

Sambo said that a man lost two of his daughters and two granddaughters in the incident.

Scottish parents return from holiday, finds son gone to fight in Ukraine

The parents of a Scottish garage owner said they found out their son is fighting in Ukraine after he failed to meet them at the airport on their return from holiday.

Adam Ennis, 35, from Biggar, south west of Edinburgh, has reportedly left Scotland to join 50 men from around the world to defend the streets of Kyiv.

His father Brian Ennis, who was in Thailand with his wife and daughter for three months, told BBC Scotland it was a shock to discover their son had gone to fight.

“Adam was due to pick us up at the airport but his friend picked us up instead.

“His friend wasn’t going to say anything until Adam spoke to us.

“So we weren’t aware until he phoned us that evening.

“He was already in Ukraine at a camp.” Ennis said.

Ennis junior has no military experience but his father said he knows how to handle weapons and is “a crack shot”.

Mr Ennis said he is worried for his son’s safety but also proud of his decision to go and support Ukraine.

“As any parents, you never want to see a loved one in any danger and it has caused us a lot of anxious nights.

“We are worried but he has done it for the right reasons.

He hasn’t done it for glory, he is not silly. He is a level-headed person and when he got there he said he had no regrets,” he said.

First Minister Nicola Sturgeon has said that any Scot wishing to fight should “think carefully about what we can do to support Ukraine that is actually helpful and meaningful”.

She has previously said she will not encourage people with no military experience or training to go and fight.

UK Defence Secretary Ben Wallace has also urged Britons not to travel to Ukraine to join the fighting as he said the “very dangerous” situation could lead to them being killed.

He said there are better ways to contribute to the security of Ukraine.

  • Oromoni’s death: Some Dowen College parents hindered investigation – Police

Oromoni’s death: Some Dowen College parents hindered investigation – Police

CSP Bamidele Olusegun on Tuesday told an Ikeja Coroner’s Court that parents of some Dowen College students hindered investigation into the death of 12-year-old student of the school, Sylvester Oromoni.

Olusegun, who works at the Homicide Section of the Lagos State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department, Panti, Yaba, told the court that the parents hindered the investigation by refusing to release their wards for interrogation.

Olusegun, the Lead Investigating Officer of the case, made the claim at the continuation of his cross-examination before the court.

While responding to a question from the Coroner, Mr Mikhail Kadiri, Olusegun said that three roommates of the deceased were not released by their parents due to fear of trauma.

Olusegun also said that investigation into the death was not comprehensive due to unavailability of the three roommates of the deceased.

“Having not been able to interview the remaining three students, I can say the investigation was not comprehensive.

“There were four bunks of eight students in the deceased’s room and we (police) were given all the names of the roommates of the deceased.

“We, however, succeeded in interrogating four out of the seven roommates.

“This is because some of the parents said their children were going through trauma,” he said.

Responding to a question by Mr Anthony Kpokpo, counsel to Dowen College, as to how many students confirmed that the deceased was beaten, Olusegun said, ‘None.’

“All the students at the police station said the alleged beating never happened,” he said.

The witness added that investigation into the death did not reveal anything against house masters at Dowen College.

It was alleged by the Oromoni family that the 12-year-old student died on Nov. 30, 2021, from injuries sustained in an attack by five senior students of Dowen College for refusing to join a cult.

It was also alleged that he was forced to drink a substance by his attackers.

Advice by the Lagos State Directorate of Public Prosecutions released on Jan. 4, however, disputed the allegation.

It stated that an autopsy revealed the cause of the student’s death as acute bacterial pneumonia due to severe sepsis.

The coroner adjourned proceedings until Feb. 28.

  • Parents should be forced to send their children school like they are persuaded to vaccinate them – Atiku

Parents should be forced to send their children school like they are persuaded to vaccinate them – Atiku

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar says education is significant to the development and security of any country.

As a result, he believes there is a need to force parents to ensure their children are educated, even at the basic level to have a peaceful society.

The former vice president made the remarks on Friday while delivering the convocation lecture titled ‘Diversity, Education and Autonomy: Developing Nigeria in the Years Ahead’ at Achievers University, Owo in Ondo State.

“We persuade parents to vaccinate their children against infectious diseases because vaccination is a good thing; why don’t we do the same for education?” he queried. “Parents should be persuaded, even forced, to send their children to school so they, at least, acquire basic education. That basic education should be free and compulsory.

“Why does it seem like the importance of education for a society such as ours is so difficult for some to understand? Why do we seem reluctant to the idea of providing good quality basic education for all our people?

“Why can’t we see that the neglect of education for our people has huge long-term consequences which have become obvious already as our country is engulfed in security challenges across its length and breadth?”

According to Atiku, a former presidential candidate, severe consequences for parents who refuse to send their children to have free primary and secondary education will prevent a situation where Nigeria has millions of out-of-school children.

Beyond basic education, he stressed the need for a variety of options for post-secondary education – university, polytechnic, colleges of education, vocational training – for those who would rather acquire vocational and technical skills for particular trades.

The former president, however, advised that while people prioritise education, they should also make full use of the nation’s diversity for the development of Nigeria.

“In addition to ethnic, religious, and regional diversity, we also have diverse endowments – agriculture, crude oil, solid minerals, tropical rain forests, Savanah grasslands; lakes, rivers, and streams that dot and snake around the country,” he stated.

“As different parts of the country are at different levels of development, local priorities would differ. Earning capacities differ. Therefore, we need to tailor our development policies and practices to acknowledge this diversity and benefit from it.”

70% of Nigerian youths may become ex-convicts, EFCC cautions parents

    By Emman Ovuakporie

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), has revealed that more than 70 per cent of Nigerian youths might soon become ex-convicts if the present high rate of their involvement in cybercrime was not stopped.

This is as the Benin Zonal Command of the agency, yesterday, secured the conviction of three cyber criminals before Justice A. T. Mohammed of the Federal High Court sitting Port Harcourt, Rivers State, bringing to 33 the number of internet fraud convictions recorded by the zone within 24 hours.

The Ilorin zonal commander of the EFCC, Mr. Usman Muktar, while speaking with journalists on the state of the nation, decried the high rate of cybercrime among youths and enjoined every stakeholder in the country to discourage the youths from internet fraud.

Muktar, who said the EFCC had witnessed an increasing number of arrest of Nigerian youths in cybercrime in recent time, charged parents to ask their children questions about sources of their wealth.

When your children, who are in schools stopped asking you for money for upkeep or driving expensive cars, parents should ask questions. Unfortunately, some parents support these youth in internet fraud. They say it’s oyinbo money. How does that turn to be your money?”, he asked.
