We are ready for business, prepared to welcome investors to Nigeria-Tinubu tells Afreximbank, EBRD president in Paris

President Bola Tinubu on  Thursday in Paris – France said ongoing reforms, starting with removal of fuel subsidy and streamlining of exchange rate, will be sustained for a more competitive economy that attracts Foreign Direct Investment (FDI), urging investors to take advantage of opportunities in Nigeria.

“We are ready for business, prepared to welcome investments,’’ he said, while receiving President and Chairman of the Board of Directors of African Export-Import Bank (Afrexim), Prof. Benedict Oramah and President of European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), Odile Renaud–Basso, in separate meetings, on the sidelines of the Summit for New Global Financing Pact.

In a statement issued by Dele Alake,
    Special Adviser to the President
Special Duties, Communication and Strategy said the President assured the delegation of AfreximBank Executives led by Dr Oramah that the Federal Government will continue to stimulate the economy with policies that support investments in areas of Nigeria’s competitive advantage, particularly agriculture.

“We need reforms for national survival,’’ he added, noting that it would take boldness and courage to reposition the economy, calling for more collaboration to solidify the economy.

“We must stimulate recovery for the growth and prosperity of our people, which will not be far away. Nigeria is ready for global business and our reform is total.

“Nigeria is blessed with human and material resources,’’ President Tinubu told the delegation, who had earlier listed areas of interventions to buoy the economy, like infrastructure, health, energy and agriculture.

The President of AfreximBank commended President Tinubu for the bold steps in removing the fuel subsidy and unification of the exchange rate, assuring the Nigerian leader of the full support of the financial and development institution on the ongoing reforms.

Dr Oramah said the bank was already building the first African Specialist Hospital in Abuja, and Energy Bank, pledging to inject more money into the economy to further build confidence of investors.

In the meeting with the EBRD, President Tinubu said, “We are challenged in terms of reforms, and we have taken the largest elephant out of the room with removal of fuel subsidy, and multiple exchange rates are equally gone. We are determined to open up the economy for business. Consider us a stakeholder in the Bank.’’

He told the EBRD President that Nigeria’s economy was too large and potent to be ignored, adding, “Ignoring Nigeria will be a peril to the universe.’’

Renaud-Basso said it would be a mistake for the development bank not to invest in Nigeria, after considering six potential economies for investment.

She explained that focus would be on the private sector, especially Small and Medium Scale Enterprises (SMEs).

The Nigeria Olympic team will play the Guinea U -23 side at the last round of the  Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) final qualifying round first leg fixture at the Lekan Salami Stadium in Ibadan on March 22.

Recall the Olympic Eagles had defeated Tanzania U -23 side to get to this stage.

A textbook free-kick by Timilehin Ogunniyi and another penalty kick by team captain Success Makanjuola in the return leg game in Ibadan saw the Eagles sailing to the final round.

The winner of both ties will qualify to the group stage of an eight-team format in the AFCON that will hold Morocco later in the year.

Nigeria won the second edition of the Africa Under-23 Cup of Nations in Senegal in 2015, before winning the bronze medal at the Men’s Olympic Football Tournament in Brazil in 2016.

The first four teams from the tournament will proceed to the football competition of the  Olympics slated  for Paris in 2024.

  • Meghan Markle reveals she is ’43 percent Nigerian’ after genealogy test

Meghan Markle reveals she is ’43 percent Nigerian’ after genealogy test

Meghan Markle has revealed insight into her genetic heritage on the latest episode of her bombshell podcast, Archetypes.

Unpicking the “Angry Black Woman” stereotype in a thought-provoking discussion with Nigerian American actress and comedian Issa Rae, writer Ziwe Fumudoh and professor Emily Bernards, The Duchess of Sussex told listeners that she took a genealogy test which revealed that she is 43% Nigerian.

“I just had my genealogy done a couple years ago,” Meghan explains, as her guests eagerly ask her to share what the results entailed.

The Duchess then proudly says “I’m 43% Nigerian” to the shock of Ziwe, who shouts “No way!”.

Meghan says she wants to explore her heritage further after getting the results.

Meghan can be heard giggling over her guest’s excitement, as she opens up about her roots during the major podcast moment.

“Are you serious? This is huge. Igbo, Yoruba, do we know?,” the writer excitedly probes, desperate to know more about Meghan’s findings.

The Duchess of Sussex then tells her listeners: “I’m going to start to dig deeper into all of this because anyone that I’ve told, especially Nigerian women, are just like, what?”

After absorbing the bombshell revelation, Nigerian American Ziwe continues to joke that the Duchess looks like ‘her aunt Ouzo’ in a heart-warming clip between the pair.

A strong advocate for fighting against racism and prejudice, this is the first time that Meghan has opened up about her ancestral background on the public stage.

On this week’s episode, the Duchess of Sussex also opens up about the stereotypes of Black female roles in TV as she draws on her experience as a former actress.

The revelation comes after the Duchess’s explosive interview with Oprah Winfrey in 2021, where her and Prince Harry alleged that a member of the royal family made racist remarks about their son Archie’s skin colour when they were working royals.

Meghan and Harry signed a lucrative deal with the audio streaming giant Spotify to host and produce podcasts, estimated to be worth around £18 million, in late 2020.

Archetypes was launched with the aim of investigating “labels that try to hold women back” through conversations between Meghan and historians, experts and women who have experienced being typecast.

In last week’s episode, she chatted to Paris Hilton about the stereotype of the “bimbo” and revealed that she felt “objectified” during her stint as a briefcase girl on Deal or No Deal.

WAR: Paris grants stranded Ukrainian dancers long-term residency to keep them safe

Ukrainian dancers of the Kyiv City Ballet, who are stranded abroad after they went on tour in February, have been granted a long-term residency by Paris, to keep them safe.

TheNewsGuru.com reports that the dancers had no idea they would be stranded abroad for eight months due to war in Ukraine. They remain in limbo, determined to save their culture through dance.

WAR: Paris grants stranded Ukrainian dancers long-term residency to keep them safe

In Chicago’s Auditorium Theatre, under the rumble of the “L” train, the ballet’s dancers have more on their minds than just choreography. Dancers Sasha Moroz and Maryna Apanasenko, both 19, say most of their family members are still in Ukraine.

“All my family are in Kyiv now. My mother, father, sister,” Moroz said.

“I’m lucky to hear the voice of my mother, to see them only by phone. But I hope everything will be okay. To keep them safe, Paris granted the dancers a long-term residency. They are now traveling on their first-ever U.S. tour.

“It is a difficult period for all Ukrainians, but when you understand the main aim, to represent your country, you become more strong. I feel stronger when I dance because I know the main reason, and the main aim of that: to show the world our light, our energy,” Apanasenko maintained.

WAR: Paris grants stranded Ukrainian dancers long-term residency to keep them safe

The dance company left Ukraine on Feb. 23 to perform in Paris. Company director, Ivan Kozlov, said they were only supposed to be gone for three weeks. However, Russia invaded Ukraine the following day.

“We woke up and realized that our country is under attack,” Kozlov said.

When asked if the company feels any kind of guilt for not being in Ukraine, Kozlov responded: “It’s not guilt. We feel sorry that we cannot be in two places at the same time, you know? We are doing our best from the field of war, from the stages. You know, we represent our country. We’re trying to show how brave we are, how strong we are.”

Their U.S. tour features a new work created after the war started, called “Tribute to Peace.”

“It’s our place to fight, because our task is to save Ukrainian culture, to save Ukrainian dancers, to serve Ukrainian artists,” Apanasenko said. “Because culture is the country. Culture creates the country, I think. And Ukraine has a great history. And our task is to save it.”
