NIS tells applicants what to do when applying for passport

The Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS) has advised applicants to always provide verifiable addresses and phone numbers when filling their online passport application forms.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports Comptroller General of NIS, Kemi Nandap gave the advice in a statement released on Friday by the Service Public Relations Service, Mr Kenneth Udo in Abuja.

Nandap in the statement stressed that providing verifiable addresses and phone numbers when filling the online passport application forms will make for for easy contact of applicants when their passports are ready.

Revealing that 107,646 produced passports remained uncollected nationwide, the CG appealed to applicants whose passports have been produced to go for pick-up at the various Passports Issuing Centres across the country.

Nandap lamented that efforts being made at reaching out to the owners had proved abortive.

“Applicants are therefore strongly advised to always provide verifiable addresses and phone numbers when filling their online passport application forms for easy contact, “she said.

The NIS CG directed that all Passport Offices in Lagos should operate on Saturdays between 9am – 2pm. This, she said would enable officials attend to applicants coming for the collection of their produced passports only.

“Therefore, those concerned are hereby informed to take advantage of this opportunity. For further enquiries, complaints or feedbacks, the Service can be reached through the following channels:

“Twitter: @nigimmigration, Instagram: @nigimmigration, Official Website: http://www.immigration.gov.ng, Contact centre: 09121900655;09121556359;09121477092,” she said.

  • Nigerians in New York beg FG for passport printers

Nigerians in New York beg FG for passport printers

Nigerians in New York have again appealed to the Federal Government to provide passport production printers to the Nigeria Consulate to enhance smooth passport services in the U.S.

The concerned Nigerians made the call at a virtual 12th Town Hall Meeting hosted by the Consulate for the Nigerian Community under its jurisdiction.

The New York Jurisdiction comprises the 20 states of Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Maine, Massachusetts, Michigan, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Nebraska, Ohio and North Dakota.

Others are South Dakota, Rhode Island, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Vermont and Pennsylvania.

During the question-and-answer segment of the meeting, the Nigerians wondered why the Federal Government would have only one passport production center in the U.S., which is in Washington D.C.

Nigeria has three missions in the United States, namely: the Consulates-General of Nigeria in New York and Atlanta, and the Embassy of Nigeria in Washington DC.

The embassy in Washington DC is the only passport production centre in the U.S while the consulates take biometrics and forward same to the Embassy in Washington DC for passport production.

They questioned the decision to provide two passport production printers in a center that has 10 states under its jurisdiction and none in the New York Consulate, which has 20 states under its jurisdiction.

According to them, New York Consulate has the highest number of states and accepts the most significant number of applicants across the United States.

They also questioned the response of the Federal Government to several appeals made on this issue, wondering if money is the issue to get the machines, expressing willingness to task themselves to get the machines.

Similarly, the moderator of the meeting, Mr. Olayinka DanSalami, shared the same sentiments with the concerned Nigerians, noting that his organisation and its partners had recently called the attention of the Federal Government to it.

The Organisation for the Advancement of Nigerians (OAN) and 20 partners in New York had on Feb. 6 appealed to the Federal Government to install passport production printers at the consulates in New York and Atlanta.

In a letter addressed to Nigeria’s Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, on behalf of the partner organisations, OAN, expressed concern over the lack of printers at the two consulates.

Dansalami, a Board Member of OAN, however, called on more Nigerian associations to join in the campaign of demanding the provision of the machines to enhance improved consular services in the two consulates.

In his response, the Consul General of Nigeria in New York, Amb. Lot Egopija thanked the concerned Nigerians for their passion, hoping the machines would be delivered to the Consulate soon.

“We have informed the Government, and we have been assured that they will provide the passport production printers to New York and Atlanta Consulates in the next face of passport production machines issuance.

Earlier, the Nigerian envoy thanked the nationals for their commitment to attending the Town Hall Meeting, which has helped in getting feedback from them.

“We have done our best to see that our nationals get their passports within the stipulated time,’’ he said.

  • Passport application automation to begin January 8 – Tunji-Ojo

Passport application automation to begin January 8 – Tunji-Ojo

Nigeria’s Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo has assured Nigerians that automation of passport application process will begin from January 8, 2024, saying that the people will be able to apply and complete their passport application process online without human contact.

“We are good to go live,” Tunji-Ojo said Monday in Abuja during an inspection of facilities of the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) alongside the Comptroller General (CG) of the Service, Wura-Ola Adepoju.

“We are starting the training and on January 8, the solution will be live and direct for Nigerians to have a good feel, a sweet experience based on the Renewed Hope of Mr President.

“We have been able to reduce human contact in passport acquisition to the minimum,” the minister said, adding that the new initiative will enhance the security architecture of the country as well as the comfort and convenience of Nigerians.

According to the Minister, the government wants to bring an end to the era of people bringing fake documents for passport application, even as he announced that the Service now have document verification officers across all local government areas in the country to scrutinize passport applications in the country.

Tunji-Ojo added that this process will hasten data collection, capturing and collection of passports.

NIS probes allegations of passport racketeering in South East

The Comptroller General, Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), Mrs Caroline Adepoju, has ordered investigation into allegations of passport racketeering against personnel of the service in the South East.

The Service Public Relations Officer, Deputy Comptroller of Immigration, Adedotun Aridegbe said this in a statement on Saturday in Abuja.

The Passport Control Officers in the region have been accused of charging extra fees in addition to the official fees for obtaining international passports.

Aridegbe said that any officer found culpable would be dealt with as the service would not tolerate any form of misconduct or improper behaviour.

“The attention of the NIS has been drawn to a report of allegations of misconduct against the personnel of the service over passport racketeering.

“As part of efforts to rid the agency of these bad eggs, an order for immediate probe into the allegations has commenced and anyone found guilty will be sanctioned.

“The CG and the Minister of Interior has given a directive for the investigation of the allegations and that is what we are doing,” he said.

Aridegbe maintained that the guidelines for application for international passport were clearly stated in NIS website.

“We also sent out our customer feedback number: 08028320751 (SPRO), 08067761196 (SA – SERVICOM), and we are not only ready to answer your calls but resolve issues.

“The problem is that Nigerians like to look for shortcut and so they fall into the hands of people who fleece them.

“They prefer to do things through the backdoor. Nigerians need to know that every office opened by the NIS has a duty to serve them, ” he said.

Aridegbe enjoined prospective applicants to visit the NIS official website at immigration.gov.ng to apply for Passports.

He also urged them to make payments for their preferred passport categories and avoid patronising individuals or entities that request cash payments for passport services.

  • NIS to open more passport service points in UK, USA, others – CG

NIS to open more passport service points in UK, USA, others – CG

The Comptroller General, Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS), Mrs Caroline Adepoju, has said that the service would open more passport service points to meet the needs of Nigerians in the Diaspora.

Adepoju said in an interview with NAN on Friday in Abuja that efforts were also on to ease passport processing in the country.

“I have it on good authority that in UK, we have over four million Nigerians and this number increases everyday because of the “Japa syndrome”; families that relocated, students, and those in search of greener pastures and jobs.

“So all hands are on deck to ensure that we create more service points in the UK, Canada and in the USA.

”We listen to the plight of our nationals, we hear their cries and we are working hard and by the grace of God, we will get there,” she said.

Adepoju said that the service had opened three additional passport processing centres in Nigeria located at Ikorodu, Offa and Ile-Oluji to ease demands on passport centres in Lagos, Kwara and Ondo states.

“More are coming, we are going to Ibadan, Badagry, we will look at everywhere we have high volume of applications.

“I want Nigerians to continue to support me, understand and be aware that they owe us the duty of ensuring that they apply for their passports when it is about six months before the expiry date, that will ease the pressure on them and the system.

”And Nigerians should stop patronising touts. Nigerians can apply for International Passport online and can make payment and book appointment online.

“Very soon, we are looking at making everything digital so that there would be minimal human interference,” the NIS CG said.

She also appealed to those in diaspora whose passports were tied to their stay and status abroad, to always be conscious of the need to renew their passports on time.

Adepoju attributed delays being experienced in passport issuance to technical issues like non alignment of applicant’s data with their National Identity Number (NIN), which must be rectified by the National Identification Management Commission (NIMC).

“Usually when such a thing happen, such passport may have technical issues like non alignment of the NIN with the data supplied for the passport application.

“Fortunately, NIMC are in the same ministry as us and we have engaged with them and we are having a robust relationship, so the issue of NIN being a problem will soon become a thing of the past.

”But that being said, for people who are experiencing such hardship, we have mechanisms in place where complaints and feedback can reach us through our website, and we will do everything we can to resolve the issues,” she said.

Adepoju said the NIS has cleared thousands of pending passport applications and urged those who applied to come forward and collect their passports.

“There are thousands of uncollected passports. About a few months ago, I published the names of all applicants and the passports ready in Nigeria.

“I was in London two weeks ago and I was shocked at the number of passports already produced, waiting for collection,” the NIS boss added.

  • FG resolves passport production crisis in U.S. as Missions resume services

FG resolves passport production crisis in U.S. as Missions resume services

The Federal Government has resolved the passport production crisis in the U.S. as the three Missions have resumed passport services.

According to a Public Notice posted in the Embassy of Nigeria Washington DC, all passport applicants scheduled earlier for biometric are expected to come to the Mission on Monday.

“This is to inform all passport applicants scheduled for biometric capture from Monday November 13th to Thursday 16th have been rescheduled.

“It has been rescheduled to hold from Monday 20th to Wednesday 22nd, 2023. The affected applicants can come to the Embassy on any of the days.

“The change of schedule is due to the internet outrage experienced at the Embassy and we regret any inconveniences this might have caused.’’

Confirming this development, a source in the Embassy in New York on Sunday disclosed the problem was resolved over the weekend.

“The system is back over the weekend. The experts worked tirelessly to resolve it and we are back.

“We fixed it yesterday (Saturday) and test run it. The system is back and all the centres are fine, both New York and Atlanta.

“The server  in DC is collected to Atlanta and New York  so whatever happens to our server affects other Missions.’’

The source, who pleaded anonymity, said the problem was  internet- related, not a server issue , noting that  since the server is connected to the Embassy internet,  anything that happens to the internet disconnects the other centres as well.

According to the source, the experts in Nigeria worked with local ICT experts in the Embassy and they all worked together and they were able to fix it.

Nigeria has three Missions in the United States. They are the Consulates-General of Nigeria in New York and Atlanta, and the Embassy of Nigeria in Washington DC.

The embassy in Washington DC is the only passport production centre in the U.S., while the consulates take biometrics in their Missions and take same to Washington DC for passport production.

The Organisation for the Advancement of Nigerians (OAN) and its 20 partner organisations in New York have earlier appealed to the Federal Government to provide passport production machines for Missions in Atlanta and New York.

“The New York consulate has jurisdiction over the highest number of states and accepts the largest number of applicants from across the United States.

“It boggles the mind to understand why two passport printing machines are located in Washington with none in New York and in Atlanta,’’ the associations pondered in a statement.

The Federal Government has inaugurated additional enhanced e-passport facilities at selected Nigerian Embassies in Italy, Greece, Austria and Switzerland.

The Minister of Interior, Dr Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo inaugurated the facilities at the Nigerian Embassy in Rome.

A statement by the Service Public Relations Officer (SPRO) Dr Adedotun Aridegbe on Tuesday in Abuja stated the new passport processing centres were part of efforts to streamline passport processing and acquisition for Nigerians residing in the diaspora.

Tunji-Ojo emphasised the dedication of President Bola Tinubu’s government to citizens’ diplomacy and the enhancement of services to the diaspora community.

The Interior Minister who, was represented by the Acting Comptroller General, Caroline Adepoju announced the phased rollout of the enhanced e-Passport in Europe.

According to him, FG is unveiling additional enhanced e-Passport facilities at select Nigerian Embassies in Europe.

”Phase one, which includes Spain, Greece, Austria, Switzerland, and Italy, is officially Introduced in Rome while phase two is scheduled to be implemented by the end of the week, “he said.

Tunji-Ojo said that the e-Passport complies with all standards set by the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO).

This, he said positioned Nigeria as the first country in Africa and the fifth worldwide to embrace the technological achievement.

“This accomplishment has garnered high regard from the international community, ” he said.

Tunji-Ojo highlighted that the enhanced e-Passport would significantly reduced processing delays in Europe, provided applicants adhered strictly to application guidelines.

This, he said including utilising the online application and payment platform at passport.immigration.gov.ng and ensuring the synchronisation of their passport application data with their National Identification Number (NIN).

He added that the advanced travel document offers three categories: i. 32-page Five-year validity category ii. 64-page Five-year validity category iii. 64-page Ten-year validity category (for adults only)

He enjoined applicants with complaints to use the following channels for resolution.

“(i) Twitter: @nigimmigration (ii) Website: www.immigration.gov.ng to interact with the virtual assistant and the Contact Center on; 09121900655, 09121556359, 09121477092, ” he said.

  • Passport Processing: Nigerians laud Minister of Interior, NIS, for clearing corruption bottlenecks

Passport Processing: Nigerians laud Minister of Interior, NIS, for clearing corruption bottlenecks

The Federal Minister of Interior Dr. Olubunmi Tunji Ojo has received accolades from Nigerians in his efforts to sanitize the process of the issuance of international passports.

The Minister was urged to go beyond overseeing the clearing of over 200,000 backlogs of passports by the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) to institutionalize efficiency and integrity in the service.

The call was made by participants in an anti-corruption radio programme, PUBLIC CONSCIENCE, produced by the Progressive Impact Organisation for Community Development, PRIMORG, on Wednesday in Abuja.

Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo was praised for stepping up integrity and speed in the passport application and processing.

Data Analyst and programme Associate at Step-Up Nigeria, Godfrey Itatu, said there was no better time for the Ministry of Interior and Nigeria Immigration Service to work out modalities that will institutionalize seamless processing of passports and measures that will reduce corruption to the barest minimum.

Itatu stressed that the rapid clearance of the backlog of passports at Immigration offices nationwide is a testament that the lack of will to do the right thing is the bane of service delivery in public offices. He hailed the Minister of Interior for leading a significant change in the operations of the Nigeria Immigration Service.

“Until we get it right, this may just be a phase. If the Minister does not structure the immigration service properly, especially from the leadership, the effort is not going to last.
“When you fight corruption, corruption fights back. When you cut the source of where people make money from illicit money, they will definitely fight you.

“if structures are not put in place, if all the changes are happening because of the strength of the new sheriff in town, and you know everybody has to act in line, once he leaves, it goes back to business as usual. So until the structure is gotten and the institution strengthened against corruption, we are going nowhere.”

Itatu backed the use of technology, describing it as a silver bullet in eradicating corruption in a passport application, emphasizing that “the more humans are out of the system, the better; when you deal with computers, everything has been arranged, and it’s organized. It’s a fluid process. When you take out the human interference, everything becomes faster and easier.

He urged Nigerians to embrace technology introduced in passport application and stop seeking proxy services, as well as desist from any act that would encourage extortion and bribery in passport processing. He called on the National Orientation Agency (NOA) to decentralize information about passport applications so that many Nigerians know the prices and processes of legitimately acquiring passports.

Similarly, PRIMORG’s Program Manager, Dr. Adaobi Obiabunmuo, called for the strengthening of the Nigeria Immigration Service and creating an unconducive environment for corruption to thrive in passport issuance across the country.

She noted that Nigerians have endured difficult years of processing their international passport and cannot afford not to build on the innovations and drive to sanitize the system of sharp practices and make it more efficient the current Minister of Interior.

“For several years, many intending Nigerian travellers have been subjected to tough times in their bid to obtain passports from the service.

Passport applications in Nigeria have been associated with delays in enrolment, processing and production of passport booklets, which is at the center of extortion of applicants and other sharp practices.

“A couple of times, PRIMORG amplified reports on the challenges citizens seeking passports go through in the hands of immigration officials and the attendant corruption affecting the system, ” Obiabunmuo said.

Nigerians who called into the radio programme commended the Minister of Interior following immediate changes he brought in passport processing.

Public Conscience is a syndicated weekly anti-corruption radio program PRIMORG uses to draw government and citizens’ attention to corruption and integrity issues in Nigeria.
The program has the support of the MacArthur Foundation.

  • NIS commences 24/7 passport issuance

    NIS commences 24/7 passport issuance

The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) says it has commenced 24/7 production of passport booklets and issuance to applicants within a week after data capturing.

The acting Deputy Comptroller-General of Immigration and Head of the Passport and Other Traveling Document Directorate, Sadat Hassan, made the disclosure in an interview with PRNigeria in Abuja.

Mrs Hassan spoke in the wake of the investigative story published by the Fact-Check medium over underhand practices by some immigration personnel who extort applicants and delay the issuance of their passports.

Recall that the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, had also said that from December 2023, passports would be made available to applicants in two weeks.

Mrs Hassan said efforts are on to ensure that the instructions of the minister are met.

She said: “The Controller-General of Immigration, Caroline Wura-ola Adepoju, has not only directed the 24/7 production of booklets including Saturdays and Sundays, she also provides transportation and other incentives to to staff ensure that we meet the demands as well as the instruction of the Hon Minister of Interior.”

She revealed that so far, all outstanding backlog of passports has been cleared, adding that only Kwara and Edo have some backlogs due to technical glitches.

The DCGI also announced that with the deployment of technology, passport production has now been centralised through which the Service can assess data of applicants, complaints, and other irregularities that could be easily tackled.

“Before now, we have what is called the e-Passport, NIS is currently moving to the production of a new enhanced one which is engraved with laser technology. Through this, we have a centralised platform to work with since the National Identification Number, NIN, is a requirement for application,” she said.

According to her, the movement to the new platform is now 80 percent complete.

“Interestingly, this process has also been completed in some of our offices in the diaspora including the United Kingdom, Canada and the United States of America,” she added.

  • Passports backlog and Minister Tunji-Ojo’s wave of ‘magic wand’ – By Ehichioya Ezomon

Passports backlog and Minister Tunji-Ojo’s wave of ‘magic wand’ – By Ehichioya Ezomon

When someone does a good job, they deserve our praise, and our honour. Today, that praise, that honour goes to the Minister of Interior, Mr Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, for a promise made and a promise kept. He’d pledged on September 7, 2023, that the backlog of applications for 204,000 passports would be cleared in two weeks.
But the minister was “laughed out of court” because Nigerians had heard such promises from different Ministers of Interior and Comptroller-Generals of Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), and they never delivered on those declarations.
So, Tunji-Ojo making the assurances to clear accumulated passports in two weeks was like a promise made by a drunk under the influence, as usual. But this minister was a different promise-maker, who bandied the name of President Bola Tinubu as wanting the backlog cleared because he (Tinubu) was “embarrassed” by the undue delays in their issuance.
And pronto, the passport officials – lethargic in operations, and notorious in underhand dealings to fleece hapless applicants – swung into action, and in a record time, “the 204,000 passports were cleared.”
Besides former Minister of Aviation under the Muhammadu Buhari government, Mr Hadi Sirika – who’d promised a “brand new runway” for the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja, and delivered it with 24 hours to spare – Nigerians can’t recall in recent history such a “magician” like Minister Tunji-Ojo.
Not even former Minister of Interior, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola (former Governor of Osun State), could solve the endemic delays in passport issuance in his four-year supervision of the ministry, leaving behind the backlog inherited, and now “cleared in a jiffy” by Tunji-Ojo.
The minister gave a “marching order” to the NIS in September, demanding swift clearance of the pending passport applications in two weeks. At a meeting with top government officials, including the Acting Comptroller-General of NIS, Mrs Caroline Adepoju, and the Managing Director of Iris Smart Technologies (that produces passport booklets), Mr Yinka Fisher, the minister said he’s determined to remove “bottlenecks in the acquisition of passports and other immigration documents.”
Describing the task ahead as a national emergency, Tunji-Ojo said: “As far as I am concerned, the issue of passport is a national emergency. I keep getting emails daily from Nigerians complaining. We cannot continue like that.
“It has become an embarrassment to His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. I represent him here as your minister. That embarrassment is mine now. I am not changing my words. I need the backlog cleared in two weeks.”
As a strategy for achieving the goal, the minister “man-marked,” and monitored the process, making the passport officials to give him progress reports every morning until “mission accomplished.”
Even as Tunji-Ojo’s hit the bull’s eye with his first shot at clearing the backlog of passports, he’s promised more actions that’d ease the processing of passports within two weeks, and “the documents would be delivered to the owners at homes, in offices or places of their choice.”
He told visiting Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Dr Betta Edu, in his office in Abuja on September 12, that, “Nigerians must not be relegated from being citizens of Nigeria by denying them a passport,” adding that, “We must get it right now… By the time the backlogs are cleared, Nigerians will start enjoying the efficient service of having their passports issued within two weeks upon application.”
Also in an interview on Channels TV, Tunji-Ojo said to fast-track passport issuance, his ministry would enter into a partnership with post offices, financial institutions, and others to serve as enrolment centres, and also work towards reducing the human factor in the passport application process, which “breeds corruption.”
Only a few other ministers have “hit the ground running” after their inauguration. They include Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Mr Nyesom Wike; Minister of Works, Senator Dave Umahi; Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Dr Betta Edu; Minister of Labour and Employment, Mr Simon Lalong; and Minister of State for Petroleum (Oil), Senator Heineken Lokpobiri.
Most Nigerians will disagree with the tag of “performing Ministers” bestowed on these gentlemen and lady. Yet, their policy statements, actions and body language stand them out from the crowded field of ministers. Samplers: Mr Wike – nicknamed “Mr Project” as Governor of Rivers State (2015-2023) – was on the streets of Abuja the day after his swearing-in, inspecting projects, and making pronouncements, some with far-reaching ramifications. He said he’d revoke and/or demolish thousands of undeveloped plots, property built on green areas, and property owing ground rents.
Exhibiting his “talk-and-do” trademark, Wike’s test-run his demolition machine with multi-storey structures owned by “very influential Nigerians,” and by last week, the FCT administration had raked in about N2bn from ground rents, with a projection of N5bn to N7bn from that single source of revenue by December 2023.
Senator Umahi – also a “Mr Project” as Governor of Ebonyi State (2015-2023) – made the inspection of the Abuja-Lokoja-Benin highway in a punishing 14-hour vehicular journey – but done partly on foot due to the road’s dilapidation.
From interactions with contractors, stranded commuters and community people living on the highways, Umahi’s plotted how to efficiently and timely fix that road and others in similar shapes nationwide. That’s how a new policy of officially adopting cement and discarding literite for road construction was mooted.
Dr Edu – former Commissioner of Health in Cross River State and Women Leader of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) – has shown that President Tinubu didn’t make mistakes in picking her as a female and a youth, and giving her the important ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation to supervise.
She’s been all over the place – disaster and disaster-prone areas – meeting, and sharing in the experiences of the internally-displaced persons (IDPs) in their camps, and preparing and fine-tuning a template for bringing 15m Nigerians into the social safety net of the federal government.
Mr Lalong, an elected Senator, had his work cut out for him, as he’s thrust immediately into the den of angry organised labour unions up-in-arms against the government over President Tinubu’s “subsidy is gone” declaration in his inaugural speech on May 29, 2023, and floating of the Naira that combined to send the economy into a tailspin.
Lalong has only had some respite in the past week from labour’s series of agitation, but there’s potential for further confrontation if the government failed in the next two weeks to wrap up negotiations with the unions led by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC).
Coming at a time when prices of oil products, mostly for petrol, hit the roof aftermath of President Tinubu’s removal of subsidy, Dr Lokpobiri’s staked his reputation and that of the president on the December 2023 completion of rehabilitation of the Port Harcourt Refinery, and resumption of refining crude thereafter.
Lokpobiri’s paid several visits to the refinery, for progress assessment, and came out each time to restate that the revamping of the plant was going according to plan and schedule, and that the December deadline would be met. Nigerians pray, and hope that the money-guzzling refinery would be back to life as promised by the minister and President Tinubu!
One or two other ministers have proclaimed the directions they want to take their ministries. They include the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Mr Festus Keyamo (SAN); Minister of Sports Development, Senator John Owan Enoh; Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Chief Adegboyega Oyetola (former
Governor of Osun State); Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, Dr Doris Uzoka-Anite; Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr Bosun Tijani; Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Mr Dele Alake; and Minister of Defence, Mr Mohammed Badaru Abubakar (former Governor of Jigawa State).
But most of the ministers appear to be sleeping on duty, or at home. It took quite awhile for them to resume duty from organising and/or attending parties to celebrate their appointments. Thus, many Nigerians are unsure if these appointtees had visited their ministries to introduce themselves to, and familiarise with the staff and workings of the ministries.
Particularly concerning are the following: Chief Adebayo Adelabu, who handles the crucial Ministry of Power – the most critical driver of the economy after petrol and foreign exchange; the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mr Mohammed Idris, supposedly the spokesperson for the government; Minister of Education, Prof. Tahir Mamman; Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof. Ali Pate; and Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Abubakar Kyari.
One thread, though, runs through the pronouncements and actions of the “stand-out ministers,” and that’s to invoke President Tinubu’s name to drive the process. Often, you hear the ministers say: “That’s what the President wants,” “That’s the instruction of Mr President,” “The President said I should carry out this plan,” “Mr President wants quick results.”
The ministers aren’t coy deploying the President’s name, so long as it yields the necessary results – and it seems to be doing the “magic” afterall! So, the “slumbering” ministers should wake up, adopt a similar strategy, and add value to the lives of Nigerians, who hurt from government’s twin economic policies of subsidy removal and floating of the Naira!
To succeed in his ambitious “Renewed Hope” agenda, President Tinubu needs to encourage the likes of Mr Tunji-Ojo to implement government’s policies and programmes, and execute and timeously deliver on projects and services to meet the people’s needs.
