Top gospel singers respond to Pastor Oyakhilome’s remarks regarding charging fees to minister

Nigerian gospel singers, Mike Abdul and Esther Igbekele, have responded to the outburst of the founder and president of LoveWorld Incorporated, also known as Christ Embassy, Pastor Chris Oyakhilome over his claims that many gospel musicians charged money to sing and had turned God’s house into a house of party.

TheNewsGuru recalls that Oyakhilome during a three day Loveworld special season 11, explained that he stopped working with many of the prominent gospel singers because they were no longer celebrating God.

However, speaking on the matter, Mike Abdul during a recent interview with the Punch, maintained that the ongoing conversation would help gospel singers to do what is right.

He said, “I think it is just human behaviour. There will always be extremes where people will be more lured by the money than the work. I think the church has been gracious enough to stretch a hand of honour and fellowship to the music of the gospel.

“So, I think when such extremes come, it depends on us to address them. It’s a good call actually, I won’t lie to you, so that we watch it and do what is right. People are engaging in the conversations and it is a way of reminding us to watch it and do what is right. We need to be able to draw structures that will attend to the issue of money and the sustainability of what we do.”

Popular female Yoruba gospel singer, Esther Igbekele, noted that gospel singers should not remain impoverished because they chose the genre, adding that they have financial responsibilities and families to care for.

She said, “Well, they both align together because choosing gospel music is somehow giving out to the Lord a mandate because there are other businesses. So it doesn’t mean you should be wretched. If you are worshipping the Lord, the Lord himself will bless you. As I’m talking to you, I’m on my way to a programme from Lagos to Akure (Ondo State). You know what it entails to move from point A to B and I am working with grown-up people. They have families, they have bills to pay, and they have things to sort out. If you are not paying them, they will not follow you. So you won’t say because you are giving your life to God, you want to be worshipping God and you remain in penury.

“I am not in party to that kind of arguments. But you know, there are two sides to a coin, so people think differently. But for me, if God is really giving you the courage to do his work, people should bless your life.

“I wouldn’t say some churches have turned worship into a party. The truth is, many people in the world today are struggling with depression. They feel down and need something to lift their spirits. That’s why some people go to church—not necessarily for deep worship, but just to feel happy and forget their problems for a while.”

They charged for singing, turned the church into party place – Chris Oyakhilome reveals why Sinach, Frank Edwards, others left Christ Embassy

The founder and president of LoveWorld Incorporated, also known as Christ Embassy, Pastor Chris Oyakhilome has broken his silence on reason several gospel musicians, such as Sinach, Joe Praize, Frank Edwards, Eben, and others, left his church.

TheNewsGuru recalls the prominent gospel singers left Christ Embassy church a few years ago, after it  was alleged that they left the church because they weren’t allowed to minister elsewhere asides, the church.

The tension reportedly began when Sinach participated in “The Experience,” an annual interdenominational program organized by Pastor Paul Adefarasin of House on the Rock. Her involvement led to speculation that she had joined Adefarasin’s church.

As her ministry expanded globally, Sinach’s attendance at Christ Embassy decreased, which reportedly displeased Pastor Oyakhilome. He allegedly instructed her to return to her local assembly and be more active in the church’s singing ministry.

In a new video that has surfaced online, Pastor Chris Oyakhilome explained that he stopped working with them because they were no longer celebrating God.

According to Oyakhilome, he tried to get them to change their ways, but they refused and stopped following him.

“Why did it happen? The church was turned into a party place, not a prayer place where God’s word was truly celebrated…they were not soul winners; they led praise in church, and when it was time for prayers, they were gone.

“The church lost its way of worship, everything changed, the music in the church became worldly, they danced for themselves, celebrated themselves not God, they charged for their singing, they became professionals making money from the church….and many pastors didn’t know that this was the world coming into the church.

“I did at the beginning and celebrated them but when I changed, they refused to change with me, so I had to let them go; God was getting my attention and saying this is not the way. I told them the lord wanted us to do the right thing…they had become too popular and because they were making even little money….do they know what big money is? The little money they were making was too attractive to them, so they didn’t want to follow me, so they made a detour….I hope they all repent…..they are not worship leaders,” Chris Oyakhilome said.

In his words: “He is not himself. He is under the influence of a devil. This devil was mocking and laughing, scoffing at Nigerians. The devil is using him. It’s a wicked spirit of darkness, a mocker. The devil’s named him a jackal. A jackal is a trickster, a swindler who usually operates on behalf of another for deception. This demon is mocking Nigeria. But he’s been cut off.”

On the final candidate, he revealed although his name is in the bible, he is scared of winning but does not want to lose.

He added: ”Then, in the spirit, the third candidate was afraid of winning. He didn’t want to lose, but he was scared of winning. Then I prayed, Lord gives him wings to fly! His name is in the Bible.”

Following the clergy’s predictions, Nigerians took to social media to deduce the candidates he referred to as “being under the influence of a devil”, “the thief and would run the country down”, and the “one whose name is in the Bible”.

Out of the three candidates above, only Peter Obi has the same name as a bible character who was one of Jesus’ disciples.

  • Meet Nigeria’s ‘designer pastors’ changing ways we look at Christianity

    By Kehinde Ajose

Gone are those days when men of God must be dressed in cassocks or soutane before they can be considered as worthy to lead clerical activities in churches.

Now, it is a commonplace in Nigeria to see some of our pastors all styled-up on God’s pulpit like celebrities prepped up for a cover page of an entertainment magazine – wearing expensive leather footwear from Louis Vuitton; Fendi hoodie or sometimes it could be highly prized Gucci sneakers; expensive wristwatch brands like Pateck Philippe, Rolex, Tissot, among other accessories .

Here is the rundown of the proliferation of opulence in Nigerians churches: With the advent of Pentecostal churches came the need for clergymen to dress to reflect God’s glory. This flamboyance was perhaps activated by the late Archbishop Benson Idahosa who during his lifetime introduced the use of ‘Agbada’ on pulpits (big traditional garb or clothing commonly used in traditional parlance for ceremonies etc or by Royalty). The unconventional Benson Idahosa was highly condemned for that by conservative Christians.

In no particular order we take a look at Nigerian pastors who are known to wear designer outfits.

    1. Pastor Biodun Fatoyinbo

The senior pastor of the Commonwealth of Zion Assembly (COZA), located in Abuja is known for his inimitable sense of style. The handsome pastor has been in the news severally – there was a time he caused a stir on social media when a picture of him dressed in a $1280 (N465, 920) hoodie went viral.

Fatoyinbo is one of the few pastors in Nigeria who have switched up fashion style in the Christendom circle in Nigeria – one can clearly see the radiation of his fashion sense on every details in his church.

No doubt! When thinking of a beautifully packaged congregant or a richly adorned worship center to praise God in Nigeria, Commonwealth of Zion Assembly (COZA) will be one of the few churches that will make your list.

    2. Bishop Tom Samson

The General Overseer of Christ Royal Family International Church, Lagos, Bishop Tom Samson, is not only known for having the gift of garb, the Bishop also has a huge taste when it comes to fashion.

Tom Samson loves to dress in glamorous suits that reminds you of a pop star, adorns himself in shiny neck chains and rides exotic cars like 2014 Rolls Royce Phantom.

The customised ‘toy’ was said to have been given the cleric by his members for the “impact”he had made in their lives and his contribution to the body of Christ.

    3. Pastor Chris Oyakhilome

He is the President of the Believers Love World Incorporated, popularly known as Christ Embassy. The fashionable preacher who owns several businesses cannot be pushed aside when it comes to appearing in classy and expensive designer suits.

With his ever shinning Jheri curls, Oyakhilome’s looks reminds one of that same charming hairstyle which was rocked by pop star legend, Micheal Jackson.

On Sundays, once you get to Ojota area of Lagos which is not so far from the headquarters of Chris’ church, you would greeted by lots of shimmering-hairstyles mostly by those on their way to the gigantic church located in Oregun, Ikeja – this alone confirms the spread of the Jheri curls culture among his congregants.

    4. Revd Chris Okotie

Flamboyant minister and founder of Household of God Ministries, Rev. Christopher Okotie is an epitome of style and panache. The pastor who owns several exotic cars including a Rolls Royce Range Rover, is one smooth talker, whose fashion sense is just as impeccable as his communication skills.

    5. AYO ORITSEJAFOR:

Lover of anything ‘Gold’ accessories, Ayodele Joseph Oritsegbubemi Oritsejafor, known as Papa Ayo Oritsejafor, is the founding and Senior Pastor of Word of Life Bible Church, located in Warri, Nigeria. He became the National President of the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria (PFN) on February 7, 2005, a position he held for five years.

Pastor Ayo Oritsejafor who is very close to former President Goodluck Jonathan owns a jet with gold-plated interior.
