BREAKING: Another popular Lagos pastor sentenced to 7 years in prison

After a pastor of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) was sentenced to jail on Wednesday, another popular pastor in Lagos State identified as Cletus Ilongwo has been sentenced to seven years in prison.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports that Ilongwo, presiding pastor of Power of the Holy Ghost Evangelical Ministry was sentenced to seven years in prison for N59.7 million fraud on Friday.

Justice Sherifah Solebo of the Special Offences Court, sitting in Ikeja, Lagos convicted and sentenced Pastor Ilongwo, after he was first arraigned by the Lagos Zonal Command of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on November 5, 2018, on 11-count charges to which he pleaded “not guilty”.

He was subsequently re-arraigned on June 16, 2022 on an amended seven-count charge bordering on obtaining money under false pretence to the tune of N59.7million.

One of the counts reads: “Cletus Ilongwo, on or about the 29th day of January, 2016, at Lagos, within the Ikeja Judicial Division, dishonestly converted to your own use the sum of N10millon, being money received through your Zenith Bank account from Obinna Ezenwaka meant for the purchase of the property situated at No 165c, Block 12, Diamond Estate, Amuwo-Odofin, Lagos.”

He again pleaded “not guilty” to the charges.

Prosecuting counsels: Ahmed Yerima, Nkemruwem Anana and Nwandu Ukoha presented several witnesses through whom documentary evidences were tendered in court against him.

One of the witnesses and victim, Obinna Ezenwaka, had, in his testimony, alleged that he was introduced to the defendant sometime in 2015 when he was seeking a solution to his “spiritual problem”.

Ezenwaka, also a former employee of Fidelity Bank Plc, claimed that Ilongwo lured him to part with N59,760,000 under the guise that he would use same to purchase a property located at Diamond Estate, Festac Town, with the assurance that they would resell it to a Chinese company at the cost of N150million.

The defendant, however, reneged on his promise, thereby prompting the complainant to petition the EFCC.

Delivering judgment on Thursday, Justice Solebo found him guilty on seven counts of fraud and stealing and sentenced him to seven years in prison for the N59.7million fraud.

The trial judge also ordered the forfeiture of his property situated at 3, Popoola Ajayi Street, Diamond Estate, Amuwo Odofin and his Toyota Prado Sports Utility Vehicle, to the Federal Government as a restitution to settle the complainant.

RCCG pastor bags two years for issuing $1.6m dud cheque

An Ikeja Special Offences Court on Wednesday sentenced Ayodeji Oluokun, an assistant pastor of the Redeem Christian Church of God (RCCG), City of David Parish, Victoria Island, Lagos, to two years imprisonment for issuing 1.6 million dollar dud cheque.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Oluokun was charged alongside his company, Peak Petroleum Industry Nigeria Ltd., on an amended six-count charge bordering on issuance of dud cheque, stealing and obtaining money under false pretences.

Justice Oluwatoyin Taiwo, in her judgment, held that the prosecution had successfully proved the charge of issuance of dud cheque against the defendants.

Taiwo, however, discharged and acquitted the defendants of stealing and obtaining money under false pretences.

“The defendant issued two cheque in the sum of 1.6 million dollars to the nominal complainant, which was dishonoured because there was no fund in the defendant’s account.

“Issuance of cheque for lack of credit is a strict liable offence.

“If the defendant was truly expecting some money till the end of July 2014 as claimed by him, he would have waited till he received the money before issuing the cheque on June 24, 2014,” said Taiwo.

The judge said the first defendant knew all of these and still went ahead to issue the cheque dated June 24, 2014.

“It is hereby in the view of this court that the defendant was deliberate in issuing the dud cheque.

“He is hereby found guilty of counts one and two of issuance of dud cheque.

“The defendants, however, are discharged and acquitted of stealing and obtaining money under false pretences as the prosecution failed to establish the facts against them,” she said.

The judge thereafter sentenced the first defendant to two years in prison or payment of a fine of N2 million, and the second defendant to a fine of N2 million.

She ordered the convict to make restitution of 1.6 million dollars to the nominal complainant within 18 months.

The defence counsel, Mr Edoka Onyeke, in his allocutus, prayed the court to grant the convict a non custodial sentence, adding that he was a pastor and could use his pastoral work as service to humanity, through community service.

“My lord, apart from the defendant being a first offender, if he is incacerated, he will not be able to carry out the necessary things on behalf of the second defendant so as to make the restitution easy.

“The first defendant is a pastor of a church. This is a very good opportunity for him to engage in community service instead of custodian sentence so as to preach the word of God.

“On a final note, the defendant has promised to involve the nominal complainant in order to make the restitution,” Onyeke said.

Counsel to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Mr Samuel Daji, however, urged the court to convict the defendants as charged.

He argued that the convict and the nominal complainant had not been on talking terms, thereby making the terms of restitution difficult to meet.

He also prayed the court to order the defendant to forfiet his property in order to pay up the debt.

“My lord, from the evidence before this court, the defendant is not committed. It has been nine good years my lord.

“A dollar was N150 at the time the loan was granted to the defendant. The defendant does not even greet the nominal complainant unless it is of utmost necessity.

“There is an evidence that the defendants never want to settle this case.

“The defence counsel said he is a pastor. My lord, the more reason he should be given a custodial sentence in order to server as deterrent to others.

“The court has stated mandatory sentence. We shall be asking for restitution. I shall be urging the court to order the defendant to forfeit his property so as to use it to pay his debt,” Daji said.

The EFCC counsel had submitted that the defendant issued a Standard Chartered Bank Nigeria Ltd. cheque of 1.6 million dollars payable to GOSL Nigeria Ltd.

He said when presented for payment, the cheque was dishonoured on the ground that there were no sufficient funds standing to the credit of the account on which the cheque was drawn.

The offences contravened Sections 1(1) (b) of the Dishonoured Cheques (Offences) Act, Cap D 11 Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004, and Section 285 (1) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State and section 1(3) of the Advance Fee Fraud and other Fraud Related Offences.

  • BIZARRE: Pastor, accomplice face death over beheading of seven-year-old for ritual

BIZARRE: Pastor, accomplice face death over beheading of seven-year-old for ritual

A pastor, Erinmole Adetokunbo, and his accomplice, Adedoyin Oyekanmi, have been sentenced to death, by a Lagos State Special Offences Court sitting at Ikeja, for killing a seven-year-old boy in the Ikorodu area of the state.

The trial judge, Justice Oluwatoyin Taiwo gave the verdict after the defendants changed their pleas from not guilty to guilty.

The men were arraigned on October 30, 2017, before the Lagos State High Court on two counts bordering on conspiracy and murder.

According to the charge sheet, Oyekanmi and Adetokunbo, on June 7, 2017, on Oke Oniburokun Street, Odokekere, Ikorodu, conspired to murder a seven-year-old boy, Kazeem Rafiu.

They were said to have beheaded Rafiu and buried the head around the church’s altar, while the body was kept in a canal.

Adetokunbo was later apprehended by residents. He was said to have confessed to the crime, naming Oyekanmi as his accomplice.

The duo led a team of policemen to the church, where the victim’s remains were recovered.

After four years of being remanded in prison, the state re-arraigned the convicts before the special offences court on September 21, 2021, as the trial commenced.

At the resumption of trial for the prosecutor to present another witness to prove the allegations against the convicts, the court was informed by the state counsel, Mrs O. A. Bajulaiye, and the defence counsel, Ms Anthonia Otsokwa, that the men had decided to change their pleas.

Subsequently, the judge ordered their pleas to be taken.

The charges were read to them in Yoruba and they pleaded guilty to the two counts.

The state counsel, Mrs O. A. Bajulaiye, thereafter reviewed the facts of the case and urged the court to convict them accordingly.

While begging for mercy, the defence counsel, Ms Anthonia Otsokwa, told the court that the convicts had realised their offence and were remorseful for the death of the child.

In her judgement, Justice Taiwo noted that the case was a pathetic one as the defendants conspired and killed a child by cutting off his head for ritual purposes.

The judge said, “These defendants have committed a heinous crime and deserve no mercy. They have cruelly and intentionally killed a seven-year-old boy, depriving him and his family of a bright destiny.

“Section 222 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State imposes the death penalty for premeditated murder and I have no hesitation in imposing the said punishment.

“I hereby sentence Adedoyin Oyekanmi and Erinwole Adetokunbo to death for killing Kazeem Rafiu. May God have mercy on your souls.”

  • 88-year-woman narrates how pastor took her to Olookun, defrauded her of N36.5m

88-year-woman narrates how pastor took her to Olookun, defrauded her of N36.5m

An 88-year-old woman, Mrs Tawakalitu Ilumooka, on Thursday told an Ikeja Special Offences Court how a pastor,  Ayodeji Olorunfemi, allegedly defrauded her of N36.5 million.

Ilumooka testified that the pastor took her to a river goddess (Olookun) for fake hard currency.

Olorunfemi is standing trial on a three-count charge bordering on obtaining money under false pretences and stealing.

He is being prosecuted by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

On Thursday, Ilumooka, led in evidence by EFCC counsel, Mr Ahmed Yerima,  said that the pastor took her to Olookun on the pretext that the river goddess had blessed her with a box containing dollars and pounds sterling.

The octogenarian testified that the defendant told her that the N36.5 million would be used for spiritual cleansing before the currencies could be spent.

Ilumooka, a former businesswoman on Lagos Island, told the court that she gave birth to nine children and that one of her daughters, Kuburat, and her friend introduced her to the defendant.

“It has been seven years since we have been on this matter.

“Otunba has a big church and he prays for people; so, I spoke with him on the phone and told him I wanted to sell a piece of land at Orile Agege and he could help me pray about it.

“He instructed me to prepare a large bowl of semo with assorted meat and give it to a mad person, which I did and later sold the land for N100 million after he prayed for me.

“I told him to send his account details in which I transferred N100,000  as a form of appreciation,” she said.

The witness further told the court that his 64-year-old son later called her from America and told her that he was sick and confined in a wheelchair.

She said she called the defendant on phone to pray for his sick son but he told her that she had to travel to Ondo State before her son could be healed.

“I told him Ondo is far that I could not go because I am old, but Otunba insisted that it is the only place they could take care of my sick son, and I told him, ‘It is okay’.

“He told me that one Fakunle Fabunmi and one other person, whose name I cannot remember, would call me.

“I was in a bus when they started calling me and when I got to Ondo State, I was taken to Ondo Town,” she said.

The witness said she did not suspect any foul play because the two men came with an expensive car and the defendant knew them.

She told the court that she was taken to a big house in a bush and was later taken into a room filled with water, adding that a woman, Olookun (river goddess) came out of the water and promised to give her money but she declined.

“When I entered the room filled with water, a woman came out from the water and they told me it was Olookun (river goddess) and they instructed me to look down to avoid looking at her face.

“They were the ones interpreting what Olookun was saying as I could not hear her, and they said Olookun wanted to give me money but I told them that I did not need money. I came because of my son’s health.

“They took me to another room filled with many people that were masked with white clothes. They mentioned my parents’ names to me, and I was terrified.

“They gave me a calabash when I got out and instructed me to take it home so that my son could recover from illness.”

According to the witness, the men took her back to Lagos and warned her that her house would be razed by fire if she would not return the calabash within seven days.

“I was scared; that made me return the calabash to Ondo Town,” she said.

The witness said that she met the defendant with the two other men when she returned the calabash to Ondo Town and they brought out a portmanteau into which hard currencies were flowing into from the roof of a room.

”Dollars and pound sterling were flowing into the portmanteau from the roof of the room, and they asked if I wanted money, but I told them, ‘No’.

“They said Olookun wanted to give me money but I told them I did not come because of money.

“They tore my cloth and I was naked and they started snapping my nakedness when I refused to carry the portmanteau full of dollars and pound sterling.

“The defendant looked at me  and said, ‘You  did not know what you came to do here.’

“I replied that I was there because of my son. I told them I wanted to poo but they said I should poo inside a big hole that was dug in the room.”

She told the court that she cried unto God afterwards.

“They said I should take the money and they would follow me to my house.

“They carried the portmanteau inside a jeep and drove me down to Lagos from Ondo.

“Fakunle plucked a leaf and dropped it on the portmanteau and said some words into it so that no police would stop them on the way.”

The octogenarian told the court that the men carried the money to her house and put it under her bed.

“They warned that I should not tell anybody,” she added.

The witness further told the court that the defendant and the two men monitored her and later sent their account details in which she paid N36.5 million.

“The first one I paid was N5 million, the second one was N11 million and they later collected N10 million.

“The total money they collected from me is N36.5 million.

“They said they would give me something like a stick with cowries to stir the portmanteau.

“My lord, I am 88 years old. Despite all my struggles not to lose my son and the money they collected from me, my son died from the illness in February at the age of 64 years.”

The witness testified that she reported the case to EFCC.

“Otunba was arrested and N1.8 million was recovered from his account. EFCC withdrew the money and gave it to me and took the portmanteau,” the witness said.

The witness broke down in tears and her statement dated March 16, 2018 and July 2018 with an obituary of her son were admitted in evidence.

During cross-examination by defence counsel, Mr Bamidele Olayemi, the witness said that she had been relating with the defendant on phone since the time her daughter and her friend connected her with him.

“She also said that she did not see the defendant in person prior to the time they met in Ondo.

The EFCC alleged the defendant with six others still at large fraudulently obtained the sum of N36 million from the octogenarian.

The alleged offences contravene Sections 1(1)(a) and 1(3) of the Advanced Fee Fraud and Other Fraud Related Offences, 2006, and Sections 287 (1) (2) and 285 (1) of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State,  2011 .

Justice Mojisola Dada adjourned the case until Sept. 30 for the continuation of trial.
