Three years felt like forty – Patience Jonathan speaks on struggle to earn Ph.D

Patience Jonathan, Former First Lady of Nigeria, has opened up about the struggles she endured during her academic journey, describing her pursuit of a doctoral degree as one of the toughest yet most rewarding chapters of her life.

TheNewsGuru reports that Patience, during a testimony and thanksgiving service at Streams of Joy International in Abuja, said the process of obtaining the doctorate degree was filled with moments of doubt, physical stress, and emotional struggle.

She emphasized that age should never be a barrier to education and expressed her hope that her achievement would inspire both young and old individuals to pursue knowledge with courage and humility.

Patience stated that she was not ashamed, even though she often asked questions multiple times and sat in lecture halls with students who were young enough to be her children.

She said, “When I went to pick up the Ph.D form, I asked myself, ‘What am I going to do with this now that I have finished as first lady?’ But God told me, If these young children can make it, why can’t you? So, I tried. Honestly, those three years felt like forty.

“I wasn’t ashamed, though. When the teacher was teaching, I raised my hand and asked questions. The younger ones understood things quickly, but me, Mama, I had to ask three times before I understood one. I kept going. I wasn’t afraid to learn.

“There is no age limit in education. You are 100 years old, you can make it. You are 10 years old, you can make it. Just sit like me. Be determined, and you will succeed.”

The former first lady further called for national unity and collective responsibility in nation-building, urging religious leaders to pray fervently for Nigeria and for citizens to rise above division and work together for the country’s progress.

She added, “This is Nigeria. Nigeria belongs to all of us. And we will work together to make Nigeria great. One person alone cannot do it. It’s all of us, joining hands, that will make this country succeed.”

“I thank God for His doings in my life and my family. That thing that seemed impossible, God made it possible. Last week was my graduation. I give God the glory. If I, Patience, can make it, then you, especially the younger ones, can do even better.”

2027: Jonathan’s possibility of running for president ruled out

Former First Lady, Dame Patience Jonathan, has ruled out any possibility of her husband, former President Goodluck Jonathan, contesting the 2027 presidential election.

Dame Jonathan rather expressed her support for zoning ahead of the 2027 general election and pledged to work with First Lady Oluremi Tinubu to campaign for President Bola Tinubu for the 2027 presidential election if called upon.

Patience Jonathan said this after receiving the Women Icon Leader of the Year award from Accolade Dynamics Limited in Abuja on Saturday.

She recalled how the incumbent First Lady and President Tinubu supported her and her husband when they contested the 2011 presidential election.

She insisted that rather than return to Aso Rock, she would support the First Lady and her husband.

“I didn’t just know her (Senator Oluremi Tinubu) just because she’s the First Lady, no. We worked together. We worked as a group.

“We are groups. We worked when I was a deputy governor’s wife. We worked when I was a governor’s wife. I know her. I talked with Oluremi.

“Even when my husband was the vice president, Oluremi stood with her husband and supported us during our first election.

“They supported us. So, for me, I have a conscience. I cannot abandon my friend, whether you like it or not,” Mrs Jonathan said.

Speaking further, she said: “Because, you see, this is turn by turn. Today is my turn—I will go. Tomorrow, it will be another person’s turn—then we go. And when we go, will we still meet? Where will we meet? I don’t know.

“I stand by my friend. My friend is great. I told her I would campaign with her. I’m not denying her. I’m not running. I’m not going back to the villa. If you call me, I will not go.

“I say it every day. Don’t you like how young I look? People say, “Mama, you are young, you are young!” It is because I have rest of mind, yes.

“I don’t want to go there—let my friend be there. Let me also “wahala” her the way she used to “wahala” me when I was there! Let me also tease her. And until she comes out, she will be young. But for now, she won’t be young”.

  • Court gives fresh order over trial of Patience Jonathan’s former domestic workers

Court gives fresh order over trial of Patience Jonathan’s former domestic workers

The Bayelsa State High Court has ordered an expedited trial for 15 domestic workers who have been detained at the Okaka Correctional Centre in Yenagoa for nearly six years without conviction over missing jewelry that is allegedly connected to former First Lady Patience Jonathan.

The move follows a rare consensus between the prosecution and defence teams during Thursday’s hearing to fast-track a case long plagued by delays.

The court proceeded well today, and both parties have agreed to finish the case as soon as possible, with an accelerated hearing. So victory is coming,” a source close to the defence disclosed.

TheNewsGuru reports that the staff have reportedly been languishing in Bayelsa State’s Okaka Correctional Centre without a court conviction, as their trial has been delayed repeatedly, allegedly under the orders of the influential former First Lady.

A previous investigation revealed that private prosecutors Ige Asemudara and Samuel Chinedu Maduba, representing Mrs Jonathan, had repeatedly used stalling tactics such as presenting witnesses with inconsistent testimonies and requesting extended adjournments.

One of them comes from Lagos while the second travels in from Port Harcourt. They’ve been handling this case from day one, presenting witnesses who come to tell lies. One witness took almost two years,” said a source familiar with the case.

Another insider claimed the delays were intentional. “The aim is to frustrate the process and keep these innocent people in prison as long as possible. It’s an abuse of the legal system,” the source added.

“Tactics allegedly included citing illnesses, unavailable witnesses, and procedural excuses. “Sometimes, Ige Asemudara would claim he is sick or his witness has work. Other times, he just asks for long adjournments,” another person involved in the case stated.

A source disclosed that the presiding judge initially postponed hearing bail applications to “first listen to the prosecution’s evidence,” only to later deny bail entirely on the grounds that the charges were capital in nature.

“When the case started in 2019, they all applied for bail,” the source said. “But the judge told their lawyers to wait so she could hear some evidence. After that, she shockingly denied bail, saying the offences were capital and therefore not bailable.”

In response to the allegations, the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) in Bayelsa  denied the reports and reaffirmed its commitment to speedy justice. The court maintained that available records show delays were due to the presence of multiple defence lawyers needing to cross-examine witnesses and several adjournments at counsels’ requests.

The 15 detainees—Williams Alami, Vincent Olabiyi, Ebuka Cosmos, John Dashe, Tamunokuro Abaku, Sahabi Lima, Emmanuel Aginwa, Erema Deborah, Precious Kingsley, Tamunosiki Achese, Salomi Wareboka, Sunday Reginald, Boma Oba, Vivian Golden, and Emeka Benson—remain incarcerated without trial or conviction.

Patience Jonathan is using her powerful influence to frustrate case of domestic workers – Family members

Some family members of the detained domestic workers of former First Lady, Patience Jonathan, held in the Okaka Custodial Centre, Bayelsa State, have publicly denounced the maltreatment and delayed trial of their siblings, saying they are undergoing hardship and torture.

TheNewsGuru reports that the staff have reportedly been languishing in Bayelsa State’s Okaka Correctional Centre without a court conviction, as their trial has been delayed repeatedly, allegedly under the orders of the influential former First Lady.

The report indicated that the staffs had been incarcerated without a competent court trial for an alleged robbery case involving Patience Jonathan’s jewellery.

According to sources familiar with the situation, the workers remained behind bars despite the years that have passed due to the continuous postponement of their trial, which is said to be on Jonathan’s direct instructions.

One of the charge read, “Golden Vivian, Erama Deborah, Precious Kingsley, Vincent Olabiyi, Ebuka Cosmos, Wiliams Alami, Tamunokuro Abaku, Boma Oba, Emmanuel Aginwa, Emeka Benson, Tamunosiki Achese Fiberesima, Wariboko Salome, Sahabi Liman, Reginald Sunday, John Dashe and others now at large, sometime in June 2019 at Otuoke community in Ogbia Local Government Area of Bayelsa State, within the jurisdiction of this honourable court, did conspire to kill Her Excellency Dame Patience Jonathan (former First Lady of the Federal Republic of Nigeria) and thereby committed an offence.”

A relative of the detained worker, Boma Hubert, in a recent interview said his brother, Reginald Sunday, was working in the former first lady’s hotel in Otuoke, when he was accused of stealing jewellery at the presidential villa in Abuja.

He described the continued detention of his brother as illegal, attributing it to the failure of the former first lady to appear in court since the case commenced in 2019.

Hubert said, “She (Patience Jonathan) has never appeared in court since the case started in 2019. The court was sitting twice a month before, but since 2023, the court has been sitting only once a month.

“The judge told us earlier this year that the case may be thrown out since the former first lady has never appeared in court, but nothing has been done to release them. I suspect that she (Patience Jonathan) is using her influence and power to ensure that they are not released.”

Similarly, a father of another defendant, Offor Cosmos, said his son has a medical condition, adding that his wife nearly died when the situation occurred.

He said, “My son is suffering. He has pile and it is disturbing him seriously. I want the government to help me because I do not know what is happening. The woman should leave my son.”

Steve Ibiene, the brother of another detainee, William Alami, expressed sadness over the situation, stating that he had been upset since his brother was imprisoned.

He said, “We only want them to do what is right. Let the court try them quickly, and if they are guilty, then sentence them to serve their punishment. They should not just be kept in prison without being tried. An investigation should be carried out. No court has pronounced them guilty, yet they have been in prison for six years.

“If they are later found guilty, what will happen to the six years they have spent? They should release all of them. No court has said they are guilty of the crime.

“The first lady accused people of theft and took them to prison, not just to a cell. She has been the one frustrating the case because she is a powerful person. Every time they go to court, they say the prosecutor is not around.”

Former Nigerian’s First lady, Patience Jonathan has come under heavy criticism following continuous incarceration of fifteen domestic staff over unproven accusations of theft.

“Since 2019, former First Lady Patience Jonathan has locked up about 16 of her domestic staff in Okaka Prison for allegedly stealing her jewellery, without first allowing a competent court of law to try them and sentence them,” a source stated.

Following the revelation, several Nigerians have slammed the Mrs Jonathan, questioning where she got the funds to buy jewelry valued at ₦750 million.

Sowore said that Nigeria is the only country where alleged public treasury looters have the audacity to arrest others accused of stealing a portion of the funds they looted from the public treasury.

He wrote, “Former Nigerian first lady Patience Jonathan has detained 15 domestic staff members for over six years while awaiting trial for allegedly stealing N750m worth of jewelry from her.

“Where did she she get the funds to purchase jewelry valued at N750 million?

“Nigeria appears to be the only country where alleged public treasury looters have the audacity to arrest others accused of stealing a portion of the funds they themselves looted from the public treasury.

“We must do everything to get them released from unjustified prosecution. Patience Jonathan should be the one in prison.”

An X user, Maria wrote: “Where Patience Goodluck Jonathan get money to buy N750 million jewelry Nigerians no go ask the question abi una no know say the president gets paid a salary. Yeye Rulers!!!!”

Mr Macaroni condemned the injustice perpetrated against the domestic staffs by the former First Lady, saying the staff members are all innocent until proven guilty by law.

He wrote: “The injustice in this country is so painful!!! According to reports, these men and women have been locked up by Former First Lady Patience Jonathan for over five years over a missing jewelry without a court conviction!! Does Madam Patience even remember that they are still in Prison??? We must stand against this pattern of abus!ng power that allows rich or influential people lock up others because they cannot speak or fight for themselves. By law, they are innocent until proven guilty.”

Steve wrote: “Where she get the 750million to buy that jewelry at the first place?….oloshi calling out oloriburuku.”

  • What Patience Jonathan did to Edwin Clark, to make Wike Rivers governor

What Patience Jonathan did to Edwin Clark, to make Wike Rivers governor

Godknows Igali, the Chairman of the Pan Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF), has recounted how the former First Lady Patience Jonathan rolled on the floor  before late elder statesman Edwin Clark, to support Nyesom Wike’s bid to become governor of Rivers State.

Igali, while speaking during a programme on AIT, disclosed that the former First Lady knelt on the floor to persuade her husband, former President Goodluck Jonathan, and Clark to back Wike’s candidacy.

Wike, who is now the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), was elected as Rivers State governor in 2015 and re-elected in 2019, serving until May 2023.

The revelation comes after Wike’s recent media chat, where he accused PANDEF of visiting President Bola Tinubu to seek personal favors.

Reacting, Igali backed the delegation, stressing that it included senior traditional rulers, former governors, senators, and ministers.

We used to organize retreats for new ministers, where we taught them ethics—how to be decent and respectful. Not to dance around, shout at people, or use inappropriate words on elders. We are still Africans, for goodness’ sake,” Igali said.

He further recounted receiving calls from respected figures in the Niger Delta, including retired military officers, who felt insulted by Wike’s remarks.

The PANDEF leader said: “Some of the traditional rulers called me and said, ‘Ambassador Igali, did you take us to the villa to be insulted this way? Do you know that I retired from the army in 1975? Where was that minister?’ I had to apologize and clarify our intentions.”

Igali also recalled how the former Rivers governor sought PANDEF ’s support when he was aspiring to be governor.

You came to PANDEF when you wanted to be governor. You knelt before Chief Edwin Clark. I was in the other room in the house. Patience Jonathan rolled on the floor to beg President Jonathan to make you governor,” he said.

He explained that some key figures, including Chief A.K. Horsfall, the late Alabo Graham-Douglas, and the traditional ruler of Etche, were initially opposed to Wike’s candidacy, arguing that it was time for a riverine candidate. However, the former First Lady insisted on Wike’s emergence, pleading with stakeholders to back him.

“She begged. And she is alive. She rolled on the ground to beg Chief Clark and others on your behalf,” Igali emphasized.

  • Pastor Jerry Eze faces backlash for commissioning former first lady’s hotel

Pastor Jerry Eze faces backlash for commissioning former first lady’s hotel

Nigerian pastor and founder of Streams of Joy International, Pastor Jerry Eze has come under criticism following the crucial role he played in an opening ceremony of a hotel in Abuja.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports that renowned businessman Obi Cubana, recently shared a video unveiling an exclusive look into the opening ceremony of a grand hotel owned by former Nigerian First Lady, Patience Jonathan.

The event was star studded following the attendence of influential politicians and celebrated entrepreneurs. Pastor Jerry Eze was in attendance as well.

Pastor Jerry Eze being known for his fiery sermons and spiritual leadership, took center stage, leading the guests in prayers as he commissioned the new hotel declaring it open for business.

Reacting, outspoken critic, Ossai Ovie Success via Facebook criticize the pastor for commissioning the hotel.

He stated that pastors should stay away from commissioning or establishing hotels, questioning the compatibility between their calling with an industry that often caters to morally questionable acts.

He expressed concerns over the reputation of hotels as spaces that foster adultery and immorality, and as such religious leaders and practitioners who align themselves with such enterprises may be endorsing actions that clash with their spiritual and biblical teachings.

“I think Pastors should stop building hotels or opening hotels built by people because 95% of hotel users are there for fornication and adultery and it contradict Christian values.

“So Pastors should rethink hotel investments, considering the high percentage of users engaging in immoral activities. When a pastor goes to commission a hotel , he prays for more customers to patronize the hotel so the hotel can grow bigger and bigger.

“The customers coming to the hotel , 95% of them are for fornication and adultery” Ossai wrote.

  • Why students must shun prostitution, drug abuse – Patience Jonathan

Why students must shun prostitution, drug abuse – Patience Jonathan

Mrs Patience Jonathan, wife of former President Goodluck Jonathan, has advised schoolgirls against prostitution and drug abuse.

Jonathan gave the advice in Abuja on Monday, at the National Female Students Conference and launching of maiden Magazine tagged, “The Face of Women’s Libbers.”

The event was organised by the National Association of Female Students (ANFS) as part of activities to commemorate the 2024 International Day of the Girl Child.

Represented by Mrs Safiya Ogo, Director-General, Women of Change Initiative, the former First Lady noted the involvement of young girls in all kinds of social vices.

She identified some of the ungodly activities as drug abuse, prostitution, girl child trafficking, alcoholism, cultism, cybercrimes, indecent dressing and rituals among others.

Jonathan, adopted as the Grand Matron of ANFS at the event, described the development as “worrisome”, adding that such absurd actions were taking a toll on young girls, particularly female undergraduate students.

“These practices are undoubtedly barriers to the achievement of the goals and aspirations of these girls and women.

“We also have had reports of young girls who are victims of yahoo’ rituals, resulting mostly from the crave for quick wealth.

“This craving for quick wealth can be achieved through hard work and selflessness, while maintaining one’s dignity as a woman,” she said.

Jonathan, therefore, urged the female students to shun prostitution, drug abuse and all manner of vices but instead, be role models with dignity as women, wives and mothers.

She advised the ANFS to embark on a massive campaign to sensitise female students, including the males, to remain focused and law abiding for them to excel in their chosen careers.

“You are not only the future mothers and wives of this country, but also future leaders, businesswomen, heads of parastatals and captains of industries.

“We live in a competitive world, therefore, in preparation for your future role, you must be well equipped and excel in your various professional callings.

“One way to equip our girls ahead of these positions is the girl-child education. This is because education is the key to development,” she said.

Also, Dr Adedayo Benjamins-Laniyi, Mandate Secretary, Women Affairs Secretariat, Federal Capital Territory Administration, stressed the need to celebrate the potential, resilience, and achievements of girls everywhere.

Benjamins-Laniyi, who was also adopted as the Matron of the association in FCT, described girls’ education as the cornerstone of societal progress.

According to her, education unlocks opportunities, breaks cycles of poverty, and fosters inclusive growth.

Similarly, Dr Jumai Ahmadu, founder, Helpline Social Support Initiative, advised female students to continue to raise their voices for change through positive activism.

Ahmadu, however, stressed the need for the students to be serious with their academics and aspire for greatness.

Earlier, the National President of ANFS, Omoniyi Alice, said that the event was organised to discuss the future of female students across the world.

This, according to Alice, will ensure that female students are given every opportunity to succeed.

“We live in a world that is rapidly changing, and it is essential that we adapt our education system to meet these changes.

“As the future leaders of our society, it is crucial that our female students are given every opportunity to excel and be able to compete on a level playing field, free from discrimination or unfair barriers.

“We must also provide our female students with the resources they need to succeed. These include access to quality education, mentorship programmes, and scholarships.

“It is our responsibility as educators and leaders to ensure that our female students have the tools they need to succeed,” she added.

Alice equally called on relevant stakeholders to promote a culture of inclusion and respect for women in schools and universities.

“This means creating an environment where women feel safe and supported, where they are valued for their contributions and their ideas.

“We must also challenge the traditional gender roles that have limited women’s opportunities in the past,” the president said.

On her part, the founder and pioneer president of the association, Safiya Sarki, said that ANSF was established to give female student a voice.

Sarki explained that the move was in response to the male-dominated National Association of Nigerian Students, where only two seats were reserved for females out of the 15 leadership positions in the association.
