    Delta Govt sets up monitoring team to tackle petrol scarcity

    The Delta Government has set up a monitoring team to track the distribution of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) to ensure availability and sale at the official pump price.

    This is contained in a statement signed by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Chief Patrick Ukah, and made available to journalists on Thursday in Asaba.

    The government said that the measure became necessary to check the attendant hardship people in the state were daily facing due to petrol scarcity and the over pricing of the commodity by some marketers.

    Ukah said that the government would monitor the distribution of the petroleum product from the point of loading by the Nigeria National Petroleum Company (NNPC) to the point of discharge to the various outlets across the state.

    “It is to save the people and residents of the state from the stress and strains they are currently going through due to the non-availability of the product”.

    The SSG, however, appealed to major marketers of the product to continue to show empathy to the suffering of fellow citizens and do their utmost to ensure best practice in the product delivery as the present circumstances warrant.

    He expressed the government’s gratitude to the people of the state for their  resilience in these trying times, adding  that no one should exploit the situation by stirring up violence for selfish gains.

    Ukah said that members of the monitoring team include the Commissioner for Oil and Gas as Chairman, representatives of  the Commissioner for Information, the Nigeria Police, the Department of State Services (DSS), the Nigeria Army and Navy.

    Other members include representatives of the Nigeria Labour Congress, Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria, Tanker Drivers Union, National Union of Road Transport  Workers, Civil Society Organisations while the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Oil and Gas will serve as Secretary.

    Flood: 22 newborns delivered across IDP camps in Delta

    The Delta State Government has disclosed that a total of 21  Iives were lost as a result of the flooding that hit parts of the state in  the past two months.

    Chief Patrick Ukah, Secretary to the State Government (SSG)  and Chairman of the Inter-Ministerial Flood Management Committee, made the disclosure on Wednesday in Asaba while briefing newsmen on the flood situation in the state.

    He said the loss of lives and property recorded by the state would have been more catastrophic if not for the proactive steps taken by the state government.

    “Today, we are here to give you an update on the flood situation in Delta, most especially now that the  water is receding.

    “It is quite unfortunate if you consider the experiences of our people who were affected by the flood.

    “However, now that the waters are drying up, we are now faced with the challenge of returning our displaced people  to their homes,” Ukah said.

    The SSG said  the state government through its committee on flood management had  been able to manage the flood victims in the state.

    He disclosed that the 2022 flood was  far more devastating than what was experienced in 2012.

    According to him, the state government has a record of 21,000 persons in eight Internally Displaced Persons  (IDPs) camps set up by the state.

    “Another 17, 000 persons in four IDPs camps was  set up by Delta State Oil Producing Area Development Commission  (DESOPADEC).

    “We thank God we didn’t have many deaths in our camps, 10 persons died in the flood at Patani while they were trying to travel to Bayelsa.

    “Another six died in Bomadi, four in Isoko and one person died in Ugbolu while chasing Antelope in flood waters.

    “Also, let me inform our people that we recorded the delivery of  22 newborns across the various IDPs camps in the state.”

    On funding for the camps,  Ukah disclosed that the state government ran the camps very strategically and did not receive any money from elsewhere.

    He,  however, added that the state government received relief materials from the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) for distribution to the impacted persons at the various  IDPs  camps in the state.

    On the amount so far spent by the state government, Ukah said the committee had made several  requests,  adding that the amount would be sumed up at the end of the camping and the report made available to the media.

    The Delta State Government has sent a strong warning to a group of persons aiming at enforcing the sit-at-home order in Asaba, the State capital.

    TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports the Delta State Government issued the warning in a statement released on Monday by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Patrick Ukah.

    The State Government strongly warned that it will allow any group under the guise of any organization to disrupt the peace currently being enjoyed in the State Capital.

    The statement reads: “It has come to the notice of Delta State Government that a certain group of persons is trying to enforce a sit at home order in the State Capital Territory of Asaba and environs.

    “The Government wishes to warn that any such group of persons under the guise of any organization that wants to disrupt the peace currently being enjoyed in Asaba and other neighbouring towns will be dealt with accordingly.

    “Security agencies have been put on red alert and have been mandated to ensure that such threats by unscrupulous elements are promptly nipped in the bud.

    “Residents of the state are assured of the state government’s commitment to ensuring continued peace and security of lives and property and they should go about their lawful duties without fear”.

    2023: Okowa tells govt. appointees with political ambition to resign

    Gov. Ifeanyi Okowa of Delta has urged political appointees in his administration with ambition to contest in the 2023 elections to resign now.

    The governor spoke at the closing of a two-day retreat organised for top government functionaries on Thursday, in Asaba.

    He said that his administration was committed to leaving lasting legacies by embarking on projects with direct impact on the lives of the people of the state.

    The governor said he did not want to be distracted in the last days in office.

    He called on top government officials in charge of policy formulation and implementation to remain focused in the discharge of their duties.

    Okowa said that the politics of year 2023 would not derail his development efforts for the people.

    He urged Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) to offer suggestions that would keep the state in tandem with modern trend in terms of sustainable development.

    According to him, the call has become necessary, as it will go a long way in enabling his administration finish strong in delivering dividends of democracy to the people.

    “Anybody in the cabinet with political ambition should resign so as not to derail the government from meeting its set developmental targets for people of Delta.

    “A lot of people are already being distracted because of politics, there is no doubt as to that. Some of us are resigning to go and run elections and l wish everybody well.

    “But for those of us who are not resigning, we must understand that we need to stay focused. They should stay with the tide of governance.

    “I want to advise us that we must understand that as long as we are in government, we should remain focused on achieving the goal to the end and try to ensure the success of the administration that we are working in; that must be our priority.

    “Politics is supposed to be secondary. So, we must be cautious of what we do.
    “I am not insisting that everybody must work along with me, but in the governance process, you must stay focused, otherwise, you also have the right to turn in your paper that you may not be able to go along with me, and l will gladly receive it,” he said.

    The governor lauded the wealth creation office for toeing the policy direction of his administration and promised to do more in skills development and empowerment.

    He charged the project monitoring office to sustain its efforts to enable the state government to finish all ongoing projects before embarking on new ones.

    In his remarks, the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Chief Patrick Ukah, said the retreat was primarily organised to remind top government functionaries of their responsibilities.

    He said it was also to remind them on the need to assist in the finishing strong agenda of the Okowa-led administration.

    In his presentation during the retreat, former Minister of Information, Mr. Frank Nweke (Jnr.), said policies must be people-centred.

    He said that government should leverage the use of technology to positively impact on the socio-economic well-being of the people.

    In his paper titled, “Plan Development And Implementation In Nigeria,” Prof. Sylvester Monye, Senior Policy Adviser to Okowa, said the only way sustainable development could be achieved was through effective planning.

    He said that policy implementation was more important in the planning process.

    “For you to have a successful plan, the people you are planning for must be involved in the planning.

    “Nigeria has never embarked on a culture of performance management.

    “I find the idea of this retreat very important. Every thing that we have done in this administration is a product of effective planning,” he added.

    The Commissioner for Lands and Survey, Mrs. Kate Onianwa, and her counterpart in Culture and Tourism, Mr. Lawrence Ejiofor, both participants, described the retreat as timely.

    They both promised to put in their best in the finishing strong agenda of the state government.

    WASSCE: Delta Govt sanctions 41 teachers over alleged exam malpractice

    The Delta Government has sanctioned 41 teachers for examination malpractice during the 2019 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).

    This is contained in a statement by Mr Patrick Ukah, Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education.

    Ukah said that the decisions was based on the recommendations by the Examination Ethics Disciplinary Committee of the state.

    He said: ”they are to suffer deferment of promotion by one year and banned from supervision of any school examination for a period of three years.

    “I have directed the Post Primary Education Board (PPEB) to implement the deferment of promotions by one year for the 41 affected teachers.

    “While others are being sanctioned, P.O. Okolo, is to be given a letter of commendation for a job well done during the examination.

    “The principals and examination officers of 13 public secondary schools and one private secondary school indicted for examination malpractice are to be issued with letters of warning by PPEB to desist from acts of negligence”.

    Ukah also approved Anointed Secondary School, Ubogo, Udu Local Government Area, which was closed down last year for examination malpractice be issued a warning letter and allowed to reopen to give the school a second chance to abide by laid down examination ethics.

    Mary Mount College, Boji-Boji Owa, was found guilty of examination malpractice and fined N100,000:00 as penalty to act as deterrent to other schools.

    The Examination Ethics Disciplinary Committee is headed by the Permanent Secretary in the ministry, Sam Dietake.

    Other representatives are the PPEB, Ministry of Justice, Nigeria Union of Teachers, All Nigeria Conference of Principals of Secondary Schools, Association of Private School Owners of Nigeria, National Association of Proprietors of Private Schools and other officials of the ministry.

    BREAKING: Delta Govt announces resumption date for JS 3 students

    The Delta State Government has announced resumption date for Junior School three (JS 3) students in the State.

    TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports this was contained in a statement released on Sunday by the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education in Asaba, capital of the State.

    According to the statement signed by Mr. Patrick Ukah, the Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, ten private schools in the State have been approved as centres for the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) organised by the National Examination Council (NECO).

    According to the statement, the examination is for only JS 3 students in private schools who registered for the national BECE and they are expected to resume school from tomorrow (10/08/2020).

    Mr. Ukah disclosed that the schools are Master Care Secondary School, Asaba, Heaven Point High School, Asaba, Deeper Life High School, Opete, Udu, DSC Tech High School, Udu, Top Grade College, Umunede, Wingate Schools, Warri, James Hope College, Agbor, Graceville College, Asaba, Graceville High School, Okpanam and Day Spring Christian College, Opete.

    The students are to revise for two weeks before the examination scheduled to start on August 24, 2020.

    The statement revealed that the committee set up to monitor compliance with approved COVID-19 protocols will go round the schools and any of them found wanting will be shut down

    Mr. Ukah added that other schools whose names were not mentioned but are writing the examination must seek for clearance from the ministry.

    According to the statement, JS 3 students in public schools who registered for the state BECE are expected to resume on September 8, 2020 to start revision for their examination billed to begin on September 21, 2020.

    Mr. Ukah appealed to stakeholders to be patient as the decision to stagger the resumption of schools in the state is to ensure that the health of teachers, students and pupils are not jeopardized.

    The Delta State Government has opened up over the controversy surrounding reopening of schools in the State, advising Deltans to disregard those who are posting fake dates for reopening of schools.

    The State Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Chief Patrick Ukah, in a statement in Asaba on Monday, said once all modalities for the safe reopening of schools in the state are concluded, a date for the reopening will be announced officially.

    Chief Ukah assured parents and guardians of students and pupils that primary and secondary schools closed in the state due to the COVID-19 pandemic will soon be reopened, stressing that that the reopening will be in line with the directive of the federal government that only graduating classes, that is, primary six pupils, JS 111 and SS 111 students, who have external examinations, will resume classes.

    The Commissioner disclosed that a meeting has been scheduled for Tuesday between the federal and state governments to fine-tune modalities for the reopening of schools. He also disclosed that several meetings have been ongoing with critical stakeholders in the educational sector in the state, and that all are working towards the eventual reopening of schools.

    He said that the educational advancement of students and pupils in the state is of paramount importance to the state government, adding however that the necessary protocols to curtail the continued spread of the infection must be in place before schools will reopen.

    The commissioner advised students to continue to take advantage of the state government’s teleclass educational programmes on several radio and television stations in the state to update themselves in their academic studies.

    Chief Ukah advised Deltans to disregard those who are posting fake dates that schools will reopen in the state describing their action as not only unauthorized but meant to deceive members of the public.

    The Basic and Secondary Education Commissioner stated that once all modalities for the safe reopening of schools in the state are concluded, a date for the reopening will be announced officially.

  • Delta Govt. approves 33 per cent increase on pensions

    The Delta Government has approved 33 per cent increase on the pensions of retired workers in the state, bringing them at par with those received by retirees in the federal civil service.
    The state Commissioner for Information, Chief Patrick Ukah, disclosed this to newsmen in Asaba on Wednesday.
    Ukah said the increment was part of the resolutions reached at the State Executives Council meeting on Tuesday.
    He said those to benefit from the 33 per cent increment were those who retired before May 2000, adding that it was meant to ameliorate the sufferings of the pensioners.
    The commissioner said that the council approved the contract for the completion of the perimeter fencing of Asaba International Airport.
    “The council also approved the procurement of third party services for the development of gas-based industrial park in Kwale, Ndokwa West Local Government Area (LGA).
    “Another approval is the contract for the construction of 32 cluster houses of two-bedroom semi-detached bungalows at Oboghoro-Utolina communities in Warri North LGA,” he said.
    He said also that the council approved the award of contract for the construction of Uzougba link road to Issele Uku and Otulu road in Ubulu Okiti of Aniocha South.
    Ukah said others approved were contracts the construction of old Okpe road, Jeddo, Okpe Local Government Area and Ogwefe-Ugbenu-Koko road Phase II, Oghara, Ethiope West.
    The commissioner said the contract for the construction of an access road to the Nigerian Maritime University, Kurutie Campus, Okerenkoko in Warri South-West LGA was also approved
    He said the council approved the implementation of an automation of tax administration process by ICMA Professional Services which would commerce this month.
    Uka said further that the council approved the appointment of three traditional rulers in the state including Obi Lawrence Onicha Kogwu as the Obi of Ubulubu in Aniocha North.
    “It approved the appointment of Obi Onyemaechi Josiah Jonathan II Kanyinaga as the Obi of Obomkpa in Aniocha North, Ukah said.
     

  • Delta Govt. approves sale of residential quarters to workers

    The Delta Government has approved the sale of Junior and Middle Management Staff Quarters, Asaba, to the civil servants currently occupying them owner occupier basis.

    The state Commissioner for Information, Mr Patrick Ukah, disclosed this in a statement in Asaba on Thursday.

    Ukah said under the new arrangement, occupiers of one-bedroom apartments in the quarters would pay N800, 000 each while those living in two-bedroom apartments would pay N1.6 million each to own them.

    He said that modalities for the payments would be worked out through the Delta Trust Mortgage Bank.

    The commissioner said that approval had been given for the release of funds for the payment of bursaries to students of the state origin in tertiary institutions across the country.

    Ukah who however did not state the amount involved said the fund to be released would be for 2016/2017 Students’ Special Assistance Scheme.

    He also said that government approved the award of contract for the completion of the second phase of the outstanding work at the Stephen Keshi Stadium, Asaba.

    The commissioner said the award of the contract was to ensure successful hosting of the African International Athletics Championship in the stadium in August.

    Ukah added that the state government approved the transfer of ownership of Ughelli Modern Market built by it to Ughelli North Local Government.
