Europa League: Paul Scholes scolds Ten Hag over tactics

Manchester United legend, Paul Scholes has attacked manager, Erik Ten Hag for some of the decisions taken in the club’s Europa League 1-0 victory over Real Sociedad on Thursday.

Scholes wasn’t happy with Ten Hag’s antics and decision-making in the game in Spain.

The Englishman noted that it ‘became a mess’ in the second, slamming Ten Hag’s substitutions and tactics.

Manchester United needed at least 2 goals to climb top of their group and avoid a playoff but the Red Devils could only score just one goal thanks to youngster Gamacho’s first half strike.

Ten Hag made some substitutions in the second, with United Scott McTominay replacing Victor Lindelof and Marcus Rashford coming on for Donny van de Beek.

“I think it got a bit messy that second half, I’m not too sure what he was trying to achieve,” Scholes told BT Sport.

‘”But in the second half I just thought…after being in complete control, it became a mess [after those substitutions].”

Meanwhile, Scholes has now warned  Manchester united side to pray to avoid Barcelona in the play-off.

United failed to top their Europa League group on Thursday by only beating Real Sociedad by one goal rather than two, Ten Hag and Co. will be forced to play a two-legged tie in four months’ time to decide whether they’ll make it through to the last 16.

Paul Scholes rates Super Eagles star as ‘most dangerous player’

Former Manchester United player, , Paul Scholes, has hailed Ademola Lookman as the most dangerous player for Leicester City in their 2-1 defeat to Wolves on Sunday.

Ademola put up a spectacular performance for Brendan Rodgers’ Foxes but could not prevent them from falling in the hands of Wolves.

The Nigeria international, who is on loan from RB Leipzig, was in the starting lineup again on Sunday. He scored four minutes before halftime to cancel out Rúben Neves’ early opener.

Lookman was a nightmare to Wolves defence, especially in the first half and had more touches in the opposition box, than any other player.

Analysing the game on Premier League, Manchester United legend, hailed the former England youth team player who recently switched allegiance to Nigeria.

“Really good play from Tielemans, we know the quality he has and he showed it with the weighted pass,” the former midfielder said.

“Lookman coming in from the other side, Albrighton squares it. Lookman has been a real threat, he’s been Leicester’s most dangerous player and he’s alert, he comes inside and he gets his goal,” he said.

  • Paul Scholes suggests ideal role for Pogba at Man Utd

Paul Scholes suggests ideal role for Pogba at Man Utd

Manchester United great Paul Scholes says Paul Pogba is worthy of a starting place in Ole Gunner Solskjaer’s XI.

United secured a spot in the Europa League quarter-finals with a 1-0 win over AC Milan in the second leg of their last 16 tie on Thursday.

Pogba scored the only goal of the game to hand United a 2-1 win on aggregate, with the midfielder coming off the bench to make his first appearance since suffering a muscle injury on February 6.

Speaking on BT Sport, Scholes was asked if Pogba gets in United’s best XI when he is fit and replied: “Yes, of course he does, whether it’s in that left-side position tonight where he came in and did brilliantly well.

“I think that position takes a little bit of defensive responsibility off him. It depends who is fit, I do like Rashford or Martial on that left hand side I must admit But he’s got every bit as much quality as them, probably more quality than them.

“He obviously hasn’t got as much pace. I think with those two holding midfielder players, it gives them that license just to be a bit freer as well from that position. There’s no doubting the quality he has.

“As long as he doesn’t have to think about having to defend, which he does get caught a little bit in that position, I think it could be a good position for him.

“When he played for Juventus, that was his best position, either out on the left-hand side or on the right-hand side and we all know the football he produced in that team.”

  • De Gea a real problem for Man Utd – Scholes

De Gea a real problem for Man Utd – Scholes

Manchester United legend Paul Scholes feels David de Gea has become “a real problem” for the Red Devils.

A 3-1 victory over Newcastle has ensured that the men from Old Trafford remain the closest challengers to Manchester City in the Premier League title race.

They were, however, unable to keep a clean sheet once again, with questions being asked of an experienced performer between the sticks.

The former England international told BT Sport of De Gea, with the Spain international suffering more nervy moments in a game that saw him beaten by a strike from Allan Saint-Maximin that bounced up and into the roof of his net: “Yeah, [the clean sheet record is] not good enough.

“We mentioned it before the game, I think that is the biggest weakness in this team.

“David again, so sloppy, it’s becoming a real problem, having the confidence in your goalkeeper, and short corners, United had one out for two or three corners, this is the one where David again, can you catch that? He punches it into a really bad area.”

UCL: Paul Scholes blasts De Gea for Man Utd exit

Manchester United legend Paul Scholes was furious with David De Gea after the team exited the Champions League.

De Gea failed to come for a cross that led to Leipzig’s third goal in a 3-2 win.

They had gone 3-0 up at that stage, before United scored two late goals and attempted a rally to score the equalizer.

United had only needed a draw from the game to qualify for the knockout rounds.

Scholes said on BT Sport about the third goal: “De Gea, here. He bottles it, doesn’t he?

“He’s scared of getting himself hurt.

“It should never go across the box like that, Harry Maguire looks wooden, he’s very stiff.

“De Gea, as a goalkeeper you make yourself as big as possible.

“You might get smashed in the face and you might get hurt.

    “He actually makes himself smaller.

“For such an experienced goalkeeper, it’s criminal.”

  • Ighalo doesn’t have Man Utd quality – Scholes

Former Manchester United midfielder, Paul Scholes, has questioned whether Odion Ighalo is good enough to play for the club

United have signed Ighalo on a six-month loan from Shanghai Shenhua.

The Nigerian striker is expected to be in Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s squad, for Monday’s trip to Chelsea in the Premier League.

Solskjaer moved to sign Ighalo, after Marcus Rashford was ruled out for up to three months with a back problem.

But Scholes, speaking to the UK Mirror, said: “I don’t think he’s signing for the long term. I think his scoring record in China is very good, but is it credible? I don’t know.

“It’s good to have an extra body, but when you’re United, you want an extra body with quality, and he’s got that to prove.

“He’ll bring something different. I don’t see him starting many games.”

  • Paul Scholes charged with betting misconduct

Paul Scholes has been charged with misconduct in relation to the FA’s betting rules.

It is alleged he placed 140 bets on football matches, contrary to FA Rule E8, between August 2015 and January 2019.

That period relates to when Scholes was a part-owner of non-league side Salford City but before his appointment as Oldham manager in February 2019.

He has until April 26, 2019 to respond to the charge.

Scholes was Oldham manager for a month before quitting in March saying his position at the Sky Bet League Two club had become untenable.

He made 720 appearances for Manchester United in all competitions, winning 11 Premier League titles.

The 44-year-old also made 66 appearances for England, scoring 14 times.

  • Paul Scholes quits as Oldham manager after 31 days in charge

Former Manchester United midfielder Paul Scholes has resigned as Oldham Athletic manager “with great regret” after only 31 days in charge, he said on Thursday.

Scholes, a lifelong Oldham fan, won one of his seven games as manager of the English League Two (fourth-tier) club who are 14th in the standings.

“It unfortunately became clear that I would not be able to operate as I intended and was led to believe prior to taking on the role,” Scholes, 44, said in a statement.

“I hoped to at the very least, see out my initial term of 18 months as the manager of a club I’ve supported all my life. The fans, players, my friends and family all knew how proud and excited I was to take this role.

“I wish the fans, the players and the staff – who have been tremendous – all the best for the rest of the season and will continue to watch and support the club as a fan.”

Scholes, who spent his entire playing career at United and played 66 times for England, won 11 Premier League titles, three FA Cups and two Champions League crowns before retiring in 2013.

    Oldham confirmed Scholes’s departure.

“We would like to place on record our thanks to Paul for his efforts during his spell in charge of the club and would like to wish him well for the future,” the club said in a statement.

Scholes, who has worked as a television pundit in recent years, was the latest from England’s so-called “Golden Generation of players to move into management, following Frank Lampard at Derby County and Steven Gerrard at Rangers.

He had worked alongside Ryan Giggs when his former team mate and current Wales manager took caretaker charge of Manchester United for four matches following David Moyes’s sacking in 2014.

Scholes took over from the sacked Frankie Bunn at Oldham after being cleared by the English Football League which decided that his 10 percent stake in fifth-tier Salford City would not represent a conflict of interest.

  • Former Man Utd midfielder Scholes named Oldham coach

Former Manchester United midfielder, Paul Scholes has been named manager of League Two club Oldham Athletic.

Scholes, 44, has taken his first managerial role, signing a one-and-a-half-year contract with the team he supported as a boy.

He was cleared by the English Football League to take the role, despite holding a 10% stake in Salford City.

The National League side have confirmed he has resigned as a director, but will retain his shareholding.

“Oldham Athletic are delighted to announce footballing legend Paul Scholes as the new first-team manager on a one-and-a-half-year-deal,” the club said in a statement.

“Paul has won everything there is to win in football,” said owner Abdallah Lemsagam. “He is a man who will bring a lot of footballing knowledge and his hunger to succeed in management will be there for everyone to see.

“It’s no secret how much he has wanted this job in the past and how much he loves this club, so I’m very happy to bring him into our family at Oldham Athletic.”

Scholes is due to speak to the press later on Monday.

  • It will be difficult for Man Utd to win the Premier League – Scholes

Former Manchester United midfielder Paul Scholes believes his former side face a tough task to win their 21st top-flight crown and that Mourinho is not in the right frame of mind.

“Every year when United don’t win something, it’s a disaster,” the 43-year-old, who won 11 league titles at Old Trafford, told Bein Sports.

“He’s obviously got to try to win the league, but there’s so many good teams now, it’s going to be difficult.

“He doesn’t look happy to me. It’s a team that grind out results rather than really impress you and that’s probably what he’s happy with. That’s where he’s been at his best over the years.

“I think he’s got every resource available to him to have a team to win the league. That’s what the fans expect and what I’m sure his bosses above him expect.”

Scholes is currently co-owner of Salford City and a television pundit for BT Sport.
