2023: To hell with Atiku and anyone supporting him – Ortom

Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom has told the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar, to go to hell as he will not support his ambition ahead of the 2023 election.

The Governor lamented the killing of 18 people in his LG last week.

Ortom stated this on Sunday night when he hosted the party’s G-5 Governors comprising Nyesom Wike (Rivers); Okezie Ikpeazu (Abia); Seyi Makinde (Oyo) and Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi (Enugu) in Government House, Makurdi.

“To hell with Atiku and anyone supporting him. They should go and tell him. You want me to be a slave for a Fulani. It’s better I die. Anybody supporting Atiku is an enemy of Benue.

“My people are being killed and you want me to be quiet. My tenure ends in May and you can do whatever you want if you think you have the powers. I have written my will. When I gave it to my wife, she cried all night. If I die at 62, many of my mates have gone a long time ago and If I die today, I’m a fulfilled person but let it be recorded that I died resisting the invasion and killing of my people.

“I will never support a Fulani man to become president. If there is another person who is ready to work with me and ensure the security of my people, I will work with him,” he said.

PDP Crisis: Governor Wike, four others jet out to Spain

Amid the crisis rocking the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) the aggrieved governors simply referred to as G5 has travelled to the European nation of Spain to hold a crucial meeting ahead of the 2023 general elections in the country.

It was gathered that the G5 governors left the country on Friday night for Madrid Spain few hours after Governor Wike was engaged in a media chat.

Those on board with Wike are Governors Seyi Makinde (Oyo); Okezie Ikpeazu (Abia) and Samuel Ortom (Benue) as the Enugu State governor, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi may join subsequently.

Recall that Wike, during a media chat in Port Harcourt on Friday, heaped more allegations on Ayu maintaining that the national chairman lacked the integrity to lead the party’s campaign for 2023.

Following the outcome of the party’s presidential primary election, the aggrieved Governors had insisted that it is unfair for the party to have the national chairman and presidential candidate from the North.

They said until Ayu resigns his position as chairman of the party, they would jettison the party’s presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar in the 2023 election.

In his reactions, Ayu claimed he never collected 1billion naira from anyone in the party and promised to make available party’s account details soon to members.

PDP National Chairman sheds light on his faults in party’s corruption allegations

Following allegations of corruption and mismanagement of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, funds leveled against the party’s National Chairman, Dr. Iyorchia Ayu, he has admitted to having faults, stressing that “stealing is not one of them”.

Breaking his silence over allegations of corruption and mismanagement of party funds, Ayu said the allegations were unfounded because although as a human being he had his frailties.

He spoke against the backdrop of allegations that housing allowances paid to members of the party’s National Working Committee were hush money to cover up malfeasance.

According to him, he took over the reins of the leadership of the party to restore its lost glory and propel it back into office because the PDP was not designed to play Opposition politics but to win elections and provide purposeful leadership for the country.

Ayu spoke while welcoming the Forum of Elected Ex-Officio Members of the party who paid him a solidarity visit at the PDP National Headquarters, on Friday.

This was contained in a statement signed by his Special Adviser (Media and Communications), Simon Imobo-Tswam.

Ayu also revealed that he has instructed the Finance Department to maintain and update the party’s income and expenditure account for presentation to the Party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) at the first-year anniversary of the present NWC in December.

Ayu said although he has many faults as a human being, stealing was not one of them, adding that the present NWC is being guided by the principles of transparency and accountability.

The party chairman said, “The PDP was not founded to be in opposition. We founded the party to access power and develop the country. And my historic task is to return the party to power. I won’t be Chairman forever. For now, my preoccupation is to return the Party to power. I did not come to steal. My public service record is there.

“I have been a leader of the National Assembly. I have been a minister many times. As a person, I have many faults, but stealing is not one of them. I am conscious of my place in history, and the NWC that I lead is guided by the twin principles of transparency and accountability.

“You may be reading many things and expecting my reaction. If we don’t always talk, it is because we want to maintain and build cohesion in the party. We don’t want continuous altercations in the PDP Family. Our eyes are on the big picture i.e. winning the 2023 general elections.”

He further said, “Therefore, let us not lose focus. Let us keep our eyes glued to the big picture. Everything else is secondary. We took office because there was a crisis in the party.

“And we don’t want to keep moving from crisis to crisis. It’s not good for the party. We can’t be in perpetual crises, especially where the crisis is artificial.”

He added: “The NWC met and discussed the issue of Housing Allowance. It was unanimously agreed that no bribe or any form of illegality took place. A statement has since been issued to that effect. The matter has now been laid to rest.”

Earlier in his remarks, the Chairman of the Forum, Hon. Yunana Iliya, said the members were at the party secretariat to express solidarity with the National Chairman and pledged their unalloyed loyalty to the Ayu-led NWC.

“We stand by the recent Vote of Confidence passed on you by the highest decision-making body of the party, the National Executive Committee (NEC), and we urge all party faithful to close ranks in PDP’s rescue work,” he added.

Housing allowance passed due process, PDP NWC insists

The National Working Committee (NWC) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) insisted that the money paid to its national officers was not a bribe but housing allowance that passed through due process.

This is contained in a statement issued by the Party National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba on Tuesday night after the party NWC meeting in Abuja.

Ologunagba said that the NWC at its meeting on Tuesday, thoroughly examined the strange publication by a particular newspaper which reported that the housing allowance legally paid by the Party to its national officers was bribed.

“After a thorough scrutiny of the payment by the party, the NWC in session established that the payment was not a bribe but housing allowance.

“Allowance duly approved and paid to national officers of the party in line with the conditions of service and entitlement of the staff and principal officers of the party.

“The NWC also established that the payment passed through due process procedures of the party in accordance with all extant financial regulations and payment approval processes of the party.

“It Is also instructive to state that the national officers who returned their housing allowances equally confirmed and affirmed at the meeting that the payment was not bribe.

“They affirmed it was their due entitlements in line with the Conditions of service and entitlement of the staff and principal officers of the party,” Ologunagba said.

He added that considering the above, the NWC resolved to conduct an extensive investigation into the circumstances surrounding the said publication by the newspaper of Sept. 26.

He said that the newspaper publication was clearly targeted to cause disaffection among members and stakeholders of the party as well as bring the party to disrepute before its teeming supporters all over the world particularly in an election year.

“Consequently, the NWC has set up an Investigative Committee headed by the National Legal Adviser to conduct an inquiry into the source of the said malicious and injurious publication.”

The committee according to Ologunagba has one week to investigate the matter and report back to the NWC for further action.

Ogun PDP Crisis: I’m not affected by court ruling – Showunmi

Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) factional governorship candidate in Ogun State, Segun Showunmi, has given his reactions to the Abeokuta Federal High Court judgment nullifying all the primaries conducted by the party in the state.

According to a statement made available to pressmen in Abeokuta, Showunmi appealed to his supporters not to worry about the judgment of the Federal High Court.

The statement reads in part  “the judgment has nothing to do with the lawsuit I instituted against the party in the state seeking the dissolution of the leadership of the party, while also asking the court to bar them from conducting the 2023 primaries over allegation of bias.”

Showunmi described the judgment as another bold move to strengthen democratic ideals, saying that it would ensure that  the choice of the party’s candidates was not handpicked by just a few but by larger party members eligible to do that under the electoral act.

He  noted that the case he filed at an Ogun State High Court sitting in Abeokuta against the Sikirulahi Ogundele party executive was dismissed for lacking in jurisdiction; stating, however, that an Abuja Appeal Court had ordered that the case be heard on merit.

Showunmi enjoined his followers to keep hope alive and never stop mobilizing support for the victory of PDP both at the state and national levels.

He expressed confidence that the court will soon serve the much awaited justice concerning the matter

“The court will soon serve the much awaited justice as I remain sincerely set to redefine governance in the state.”

Recall that  some members of the PDP in Ogun had gone to court to challenge the delegate lists used during the PDP primaries that produced Oladipupo Adebutu as the party’s governorship candidate and others.

In his judgment, Justice O. O. Oguntoyinbo annulled all the PDP primary elections and ordered that fresh ones be conducted within the next 14 days.

Although, Showunmi declared that the primary election that he emerged from is genuine and cannot be tampered with.

PDP Crisis: Wike reveals details of meeting with Tinubu in London

The Governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Wike, has revealed the details of the meeting he had with the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Asiwaju Bola Tinubu in London.

Recall that Tinubu and Wike met in London few weeks ago over issues concerning defection and 2023 general elections in the country.

The Rivers-born politician claimed that  Tinubu, offered him a senatorial ticket when they met in London, United Kingdom.

He added that Tinubu wanted him to work for him and the APC but he declined the offer.

Wike made this revelation  during a media chat  held in Port Harcourt on Friday morning.

Prior to the media chat, Wike had already hinted that he would stay put in PDP and fight till the very end, adding that he who fights and runs away is a weak individual.

Wike continued by saying that he wouldn’t act like some persons who ran away from the party during crisis.

According to Wike, he contested the presidential primaries because he wanted to be the candidate, so he didn’t buy a senatorial form.

“I didn’t contest so I can become a vice presidential candidate.

“I am not like others who were not serious and bought senatorial form alongside presidential form, and that’s why when Tinubu offered me senate slot, I didn’t go for it.”

Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, has revealed what the National Chairman Iyiorcha Ayu did to him to ensure that he doesn’t emerge as the presidential candidate of the party.

The Rivers-born politician made this known during a live media chat with journalists in Port Harcourt on Friday.

“There’s nothing Ayu did not do for me not to emerge as the PDP candidate,” Wike said.

“Ayu did everything to manipulate the system to ensure that all the numbers did not add up.”

Recall that the PDP held its presidential primaries in May this year.

Atiku defeated Wike after he secured 371 votes, while the governor, who came second, garnered 237 votes.

Wike also lost out in the Vice presidential race to Delta State Governor, Ifeanyi Okowa.

However, Wike has assured everyone that he will remain in the party to fight on.

PDP Crisis: Wike finally speaks on his preferred party for 2023

Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, has finally cleared the air on defecting from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) saying that he will remain at the party and fight on.

Wike announced on Thursday amid the crisis bedeviling the party.

Recall that the governor’s camp withdrew from the campaign team of the party’s presidential candidate, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar over the refusal of the National Chairman Iyiorcha Ayu to resign from his position.

Wike spoke during a meeting of PDP stakeholders in the state at the Government House, Port Harcourt.

“We will do the fight at the party. We are not like them when in 2014 they walked out of Eagle Square. They’ve forgotten. They walked out and joined APC.

Wike posited that those who fight and run away are weak people, saying he and his team will fight as members of the party.

The governor noted that the constitution of the party clearly states that elective and party offices must be zoned.

“You have taken the presidential candidate, you have taken party chairman, you have also taken the DG of the campaign. We are talking about party politics.”

Wike said decisions are made by the presidential candidate, party chairman, and the DG of the campaign.

“You can put pressure on the BoT chairman to resign when his tenure hasn’t come to an end. But you cannot put pressure on the chairman to resign”, he added.

  • Edo PDP crisis requires flexibility, compromise to resolve – By Ehichioya Ezomon

Edo PDP crisis requires flexibility, compromise to resolve – By Ehichioya Ezomon

The political crisis in the Edo State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) demands that Governor Godwin Obaseki, Deputy Governor Philip Shaibu and their supporters reflect deeply on why and how they defected to the party in June 2020.

Needless to dwell on the nitty-gritty of their exit from the All Progressives Congress (APC), which gave them the platform to the Dennis Osadebey Avenue seat of government in Benin City in 2016.

But there they’re, left in the political wilderness by the machination of the National Working Committee (NWC) of the APC, headed by Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, a former governor of Edo State.

In the run-up to the September 2020 governorship contest, Oshiomhole had sworn to disqualify Obaseki even if he passed the screening that would qualify him for the party primaries.

Various factors, some outside of Oshiomhole’s control, were also at play to deny Obaseki the chance to vie for the ticket that ought to be his on the basis of “right of first refusal” as a sitting governor.

The split with Oshiomhole ensured that Obaseki was taken through the rigours of primaries rather than a coronation, and disqualified over reported discrepancies in the documents he filed with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

What to do in the circumstance? That’s when and how Obaseki and his camp decided to defect to the PDP, as the sure platform to use, to pay the APC and Oshiomhole back in their game.

Yet, it’s a tug-of-war for the PDP to admit Obaseki and his defectors, with alleged difficult conditions placed before him, including monetary inducement, and the ceding of the position of Deputy Governor to the old or foundation members of the chapter.

In the end, a lot of water reportedly passed under the bridge, and Obaseki and Shaibu had their way as the PDP candidate and running mate, and roundly defeated the APC and its candidate.

After every election comes the sharing and allocation of offices, and that’s the takeoff of the second stanza of the crisis in the Edo PDP. The prior agitation for a bigger role in Obaseki’s second term was only subsumed for the PDP to have a rancour-free poll.

By losing the Deputy Governor’s position, the old members were energized to fight for other appointive offices, as the processes for elective posts would only come in the lead-up to the 2023 polls.

The old members, headed by former Edo State chairman and national vice chairman (South-South) of the PDP, Chief Dan Orbih, have accused Obaseki of allocating “99 per cent” of party positions to members that accompanied him to the PDP.

But Obaseki considers the old members’ demand for equity as aimed at undermining his leadership of the Edo PDP, and lately told those not satisfied with his headship of the party to take a walk.

Obaseki’s declaration comes on the back of Hon. Shaibu’s warning that the new members would pull out of the PDP if the old members failed to integrate them into the party.

In tandem with Shaibu’s position, Obaseki stated that the 500,000 registered new members since September 2020 “have not properly integrated into our party after two years,” adding that, “the leaders, executives and members, who came with me into the party, have still not been accepted, integrated or harmonized into the party.”

Obaseki alleged that a cabal, led by Chief Orbih, has “vilified and ostracized” old members of Edo PDP, “who are open to inclusion and supportive of building a large party.”

The governor recalled that “a political solution gave rise to the emergence of Chief Dan Orbih, first as acting and then as substantive National Vice

Chairman, South South, of our party… It is therefore curious why this type of political solution is no longer tenable to resolve the political impasse in Edo State PDP.”

The question is: Who is integrating whom? Going by Nigeria’s current skewed political arrangement, the President, Governor or a past Governor leads and controls the structures of political parties.

This is so as the president and state governors misuse public funds to run political parties, and thus in a position to dictate what goes on in the parties, such as picking members for elective or appointive positions, and sharing of other bounties of office.

In the instant case of Edo PDP, the power to integrate all members lies with Governor Obaseki, as the leader of the party, and not with the old members, as inferred by Obaseki and Shaibu.

Actually, the old members started the process of integration by accepting the new members into the platform. The “proper integration” or “harmonisation” should come from Obaseki by way of an equitable distribution of positions to old and new members.

The crisis in the Edo PDP arose from “improper harmonisation” of old and new members, even as Obaseki maintains that the process of harmonisation has started, but stalled by the old members, and yet, he’s only able to cite the choice of Chief Orbih for consecutive elevated positions in the chapter.

What about other positions the governor had filled? How many slots went to the old members? How many Commissioners, departmental and parastatal heads were picked from among the old members? Did the positions of Secretary to the State Government (SSG) or Chief of Staff (CoS) go to the old members’ camp? What’s difficult in ceding second positions in various sectors of Edo polity to the old members, who appear not asking for too much?

The old members will have little or no case if these questions, and more, are answered in the affirmative. But if in the negative, then there’s a problem of inequity in the system, and Obaseki needs to tackle it with an open mind.

It’s lack of equity, and a firm willingness to rectify the anomaly that breeds the notion of “founders and joiners” and “betrayal and ingratitude” that resonates like a mantra in the camp of the old members of the Edo chapter of the PDP.

And they’re right to feel so, considering what they did to receive Governor Obaseki, Deputy Governor Shaibu and other members that defected to the PDP after they’re alienated by the APC.

But Obaseki may argue that it’s the old members of the Edo PDP that owe his camp immense gratitude for reviving the platform that’s out of power for 12 years, and had no hope in the 2020 poll.

The governor can stretch the argument that had he gone to another political party, even “a smaller party,” he would’ve won the poll, what with the overwhelming supports from Edo voters!

Indeed, the voters rooted for Obaseki’s re-election with the slogan, “4+4 Togba,” meaning, “four plus four equals eight years signed, sealed and delivered” for four more years for Obaseki in power.

Still, Obaseki couldn’t dare to test his popularity outside the mainstream PDP, which had formidable structures in the unit, ward and local government levels across Edo State, and had acquitted itself creditably in past elections that the party lost.

All said, the matter in the Edo PDP can be resolved satisfactorily if members, particularly Governor Obaseki, Deputy Governor Shaibu and Chief Orbih set aside ego, greed and blackmail, and adopt flexibility and compromise in handling the party affairs.
