Crisis: PDP BoT members speak on Wike’s presence, way forward for party after meeting in Abuja

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Board of Trustees (BoT) is to set up a committee to resolve the internal leadership crisis rocking the party.

Former Senate President, Sen. David Mark, while briefing newsmen on the outcome of the board’s meeting held on Thursday in Abuja, described the meeting as cordial and fruitful.

Mark said that the board resolved to set up a committee comprising governors, members of the BoT, National Assembly caucus of PDP, the National Working Committee, former governors and former ministers to look into the matter.

He said that the committee was needed not just to resolve issues related to recent resignation of seven deputy national officers of the party, but to make PDP more united.

He also denied the rumour that Governor Nyesom Wike of River was summoned to the meeting, saying Wike was member of the board and he attended as a member.

Asked if the current NWC of the party would be allowed to complete its tenure, the former Senate President, Sen. Bukola Saraki, said that the committee members would meet between 48 to 72 hours for way forward.

Saraki advised against making point out of who attended the meeting for the first time, saying as a member, I was attending for the first time for long time.

“We all came together to addresses some issues and because of the urgency of the matter, we agreed to set up this committee urgently.

“Within the next 48 hours to 72 hours the committee will meet and at the end of the meeting, the country will see the direction the party is going.

“The commitment of everybody to attend this meeting and subject themselves to the decision of the meeting shows the interest of everybody.

“The presence of all of us here is because this meeting of today is important in addressing some of those issues.

“My message to Nigerians is that we know the importance of this party to this nation in addressing the challenges ahead of us.

“So, let us come together as a party and salvage this country,” Saraki said.

Too late for Atiku to resolve Kogi PDP crisis -Adeyemi

Senator Smart Adeyemi has said that it is too late for Former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar to resolve the crisis in the Kogi State chapter of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP

Major PDP stakeholders in the state, including some contenders in the September 3 governorship primaries, have continued to quarrel over the outcome of the exercise, which saw Mr Musa Wada emerge as winner.

Some of the pained aspirants have gone to court to challenge the outcome of the primaries, with one of the defeated aspirants, Senator Dino Melaye turning down an offer to lead the PDP campaign ahead of the November 16 governorship election.

Worried by the development, Atiku had been meeting with interested parties in the Kogi PDP crisis, with the view to uniting the party for victory at the poll.

But speaking with reporters in Abuja yesterday, Senator Adeyemi called on Atiku not to waste his time trying to resolve the crisis, saying that the situation in the Kogi PDP has gone beyond redemption.

Adeyemi said: “My advice to Alhaji Atiku Abubakar is that he should not waste his time and money. It is too late. I wish he did that six months ago.

“The crisis rocking the Kogi PDP are fundamental. They are without planning, they are without focus and people have made up their minds in Kogi State.

“How can you present the son in-law of a former governor who is also the younger brother of another former governor. Even if you are picking someone from the same zone, are there not other very competent persons from the zone?”

Adeyemi said the PDP was already dying in Kogi as a result of attempts by just interrelated families to dominate political power in the state, stressing that a former governor, his son and his in-laws were seeking to convert the state to their private fiefdom.

The campaign DG dismissed the widely held belief that the incumbent governor might lose the election to poor performance, saying that Governor Bello had performed better than his predecessors who were elected on the platform of the PDP.

Adeyemi said he accepted to lead the governor’s re-election campaign on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) on the conviction that the governor had recorded concrete achievements in terms of project execution and security in the state.

PDP crisis: Sheriff pulls out of Jonathan’s reconciliation move

The Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party(PDP) Sen. Ali Modu Sheriff said he was pulling out the reconciliation move of the former President Goodluck Jonathan to resolve the party’s leadership crisis.

Sheriff in a statement signed by his Deputy National Chairman, Dr Cairo Ojougboh issued on Thursday in Abuja, said this was to enable his led National working Committee (NOC) to focus on repositioning the PDP.

He said that the reconciliation moves initiated by Jonathan had finally collapsed, alleging that the move had been hijacked by the Sen. Ahmed Makarfi-led National Caretaker Committee.

We are opting out and focusing our efforts at making the party the darling of Nigerians again.

We had made tremendous progress before former President Jonathan was asked by party leaders to convene a meeting where stakeholders will adopt the governor Seriake Dickson’s Committee report on reconciliation.

“” Unfortunately, former president Jonathan lost control of the meeting he convened and allowed Makarfi group to continue with their anti party posture” he said.

““All the organs of the party were already queuing up behind us and Jonathan came to unbundle the progress we made by his inability to control the meeting.

“”We will not continue again but rather concentrate on rebuilding our party,” he said.

Sheriff also stated that his NWC had postponed the party’s National Executive Council (NEC) meeting scheduled for May 4 indefinitely, adding that a new date would be announced later.

  • PDP Crisis: We will not appeal verdict of Appeal Court – Sheriff faction

The Sen. Ali Modu Sheriff-led Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) says it will not approach the Supreme Court to appeal the outcome of the expected Court of Appeal judgment on the party’s leadership crisis.

The National Deputy Chairman of the faction, Dr Cairo Ojougboh, made the pledge this when he addressed newsmen on Monday in Abuja.

Ojougboh said that the faction was, however, expecting a land mark judgment that would not only bring to rest the lingering leadership crisis in the party, but also determined the landmark of Nigerian politics.

We are also in discussion with various organs of the party and we have reached a situation where all of us have agreed that, whatever is the outcome of the Appeal Court, nobody should appeal to the Supreme Court.

We will accept it and everybody will accept it‎.

After the court judgment, all of us will sit down again‎ and discuss. It is obvious that the Port Harcourt judgment will be the deciding factor. Anybody who will go ahead after the judgment, it is up to him,’’ Ojougboh said.

The national deputy chairman added that the Sheriff-led faction was open to dialogue with the National Caretaker Committee and its loyalists, irrespective of the outcome of the court judgment.

He appealed to PDP members to be patient while awaiting the outcome of the judgment.

Ojougboh said that the faction was hopeful that the Court of Appeal would do what was necessary, ‘’which is the truth.“

On PDP National Secretariat staff, who recently pledged their loyalty to Makarfi group, Ojougboh said that appropriate action on them would be taken after the expected court judgment.

On the allegation that the faction wanted to woo PDP staff to its side with money but that the staff rejected the invitation and offer, Ojougboh said it was not true.#

He said that though the faction’s National Working Committee wanted to meet with PDP staff, but most of them were yet to resume duty.

According to him, the meeting has been rescheduled for future day.

Meanwhile, some members of staff of PDP who spoke with the newsmen on condition of anonymity, said that they were invited but that they turned down the invitation.

Our loyalist is for Makarfi-led Caretaker Committee, there is no reason for us to be jumping from one leader to another,’’ the staff said.
