The acting chairman of Peoples Democratic Party, PDP has disowned one of its own, the Publicity scribe, Hon Debo Ologunagba over his comment on its forthcoming 100th NEC scheduled for June 30th.

Recall that Ologunagba had in a press briefing over the weekend stated that the Independent National Electoral Commission INEC has no authority to halt its NEC meeting.

Disturbed by this development, the acting chairman of the main opposition party in Nigeria, Ambassador Umar Damagun issued a statement that his position was personal on the issue.

Damagun clearly stated that the party scribe was not authorized by the National Working Committee, CWC before addressing the press.

He further emphasized that It is unfortunate that this is not the first time Ologunagba is embarking on such an unauthorized mission.

The acting chairman pleaded with party loyalists for understanding as the 100th NEC matter would be adequately thrashed out soon.

The contestants, numbering 287, took the decision to join the Coalition of Political Parties.

Speaking at a gathering in Katsina on Thursday, Malam Jamilu Yahaya, the Chairman of the House of Assembly Aspirants’ Forum, said their decision to join the coalition was informed by their desire to bring positive change.

According to him, before taking such decision by 25 of them, series of meetings were held by the members, which at the end they decided to dump PDP and join the coalition.

He explained that there were about 20 per cent of their members that were still in PDP holding positions, but assured that before the forthcoming general elections they would also join.

Yahaya assured the coalition leadership that as new members, they would remain loyal and ready to join any political party the leadership resolved to be part of.

Also, the Chairman of Local Government Chairmanship Aspirants’ Forum, Alhaji Yasir Ibrahim, said that betrayal and deceitful in the PDP, forced about 13 of them to leave the party.

He said: “We were called to contest for the position of local government chairmen, but unfortunately we were deceived by a faction of the party.

“We struggled to obtained the expression of interest forms, but to our greatest surprise, our names were not submitted to the electoral body.”

According to him, PDP is no longer an opposition party in the state, “hence our decision to join the coalition for a stronger opposition.”

The Chairman of Councilors Aspirants’ Forum, Malam Aminu Yunusa, expressed the readiness of his members to work with the coalition towards salvaging the state and the country as a whole.

He added that before their decision to join the movement, he had to make sure that his members, numbering about 247, would be carried along in the new journey.

Former VP Namadi Sambo speaks on defecting to APC

Namadi Sambo, a former Vice President of Nigeria has denied reports that he has dumped the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The rebuttal, issued in a press statement provided to TheNewsGuru by his Media Adviser, Umar Sani, categorically stated that the report about Sambo’s defection is a fabrication intended to mislead the public.

It also emphasized that the widely circulated photograph of Sambo with Governor Uba Sani of Kaduna State, used to support the defection story, is an old image.

The statement reaffirmed that the former Vice President remains a loyal and committed member of the PDP and has no intention of joining any other political party.

The full statement reads: Rebuttal to False Claims of Defection by Arc. Mohammed Namadi Sambo, GCON

“My attention has been drawn to a widely circulated story alleging that His Excellency, Arc. Mohammed Namadi Sambo, GCON, former Vice President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, has defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC). This claim is entirely false and without any basis.

“Following numerous calls and inquiries, I have taken the liberty on the authority of His Excellency’s family to issue this formal rebuttal. I categorically state that the story is a fabrication, laced with mischief and aimed at misleading the public.

“The photograph supporting this falsehood, showing His Excellency with the Governor of Kaduna State, Senator Uba Sani, is not recent. It was taken years ago during a condolence visit by the Governor to His Excellency’s residence in Abuja, following the demise of his brother, the late Sani Sambo. The image is now being deliberately misrepresented to fit a contrived narrative.

“Furthermore, His Excellency is scheduled to attend the commissioning of a 300-bed hospital in Kaduna on Thursday, 19th June 2025. This project, which he initiated during his time in office, stands as a testament to his enduring commitment to public service and the development of Kaduna State. His invitation to witness the completion of this legacy project, and possibly offer a few remarks, must not be misconstrued as a political endorsement or as confirmation of any partisan shift.

“For the avoidance of doubt, His Excellency, Arc. Mohammed Namadi Sambo remains a loyal and committed member of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP). He has no intention of joining any other political party. The defection story is purely the figment of the imagination of its authors calculated to sow confusion and achieve cheap political mileage.

“We urge the public and the media to disregard this misinformation and treat it with the contempt it deserves.”

LG election: Lagos PDP unveils candidates as Bode George canvasses votes

The PDP in Lagos State on Wednesday officially unveiled  its 57 chairmanship and 376 councillorship candidates for the July 12 Local Government election.

The party also presented flags to the candidates at the event, held at the Ikoyi office of party chieftain, Chief Bode George.

Speaking at the ceremony, George, a former PDP Deputy National Chairman, urged the candidates to work hard to convince the electorate to vote PDP at the grassroots level.

According to him, if not for his efforts and visit to the Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC), PDP would have been prevented from fielding candidates for the  election.

“The essence of today is to unveil our candidates in order to convince the  electorate that the rumour that PDP has collapsed made by some people is most irresponsible and a total lie.

“How can the political Iroko tree die? The only political Iroko tree in Nigeria today is PDP. I feel sorry for those defecting to other parties.

The PDP leader urged the candidates to be courageous and vigorous in their campaigns across all wards and local government areas in the state.

George added: “For those of you contesting, be courageous. As you go out to campaign, do not be afraid to tell the electorate the truth.

“Wrestle for power to take care of the people and not to amass wealth to yourselves. You must be servant-leaders, washing the hands and feet of disciples (people) like Jesus did. You are to serve and not to be served.

“It is sad that today that some privileged few are living in highrise buildings while millions are hungry, suffering and living in squalor.

“Please, be strong enough to convince the electorate, I will join you as much as possible to campaign to our people. Let the vibration of yours campaign wake up Lagos.”

Lamenting current economic and security challenges facing the country, George urged the government to do more ,saying  the primary responsibility of government remained security and welfare of the people.

He urged both the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC) to always carry out their duties conscientiously .

PDP: The plot thickens – By Etim Etim

    By ETIM ETIM

Those who are still in doubt about the fate of the PDP and why some of its elected officials are decamping to other parties should read a letter written by INEC last week to the party’s National Chairman.

Dated June 13, the letter is a response to an earlier one written by the party to the electoral body in which the party had notified INEC of its intention to hold its 100th NEC meeting.

In its response, INEC stated that the notice to hold the NEC meeting was not in compliance with the requirements of part 2(12)3 of the Regulations and Guidelines for Political Parties, 2022 which provides that ‘’the National Chairman and National Secretary of the Party shall jointly sign the notice of convention, congress, conference or meeting and submit same to the commission’’.

The PDP’s letter dated May 30 and signed solely by the party’s Acting National Chairman, Umar Damagun, did not meet INEC’s guidelines, and so the party could not hold its NEC meeting which was to lay the groundwork for important activities like organizing a national convention.

PDP has been embroiled in a series of intractable crisis that has weakened the party and left many members confused. After the ouster of Iyorchia Ayu as National Chairman in 2023, two persons, Umar Damagun and Yayari Ahmed Mohammed emerged as Acting Chairman.

Damagun was appointed on March 28, 2023, while Yayari Mohammed was thrown up by a different faction of the party as Acting National Chairman on October 11, 2024, following Damagun’s suspension by another group within the party.

The National Secretary position is no less unstable. Crisis began when Samuel Anyanwu was selected as the PDP governorship candidate for Imo State in 2023. The party’s South-East zone nominated the National Youth Leader, Sunday Ude-Okoye to replace him, citing a constitutional provision. Anyanwu, however, claimed that he did not resign as National Secretary when he went for the governorship election, insisting that his tenure was valid until November 2025. Litigation ensued.

A Federal High Court judgment supported his argument, only to be sacked by from his position by the Court of Appeal in Enugu, which affirmed Udeh-Okoye as National Secretary. The Supreme Court later overturned this decision, and reinstated Anyanwu as the National Secretary.

But the matter remains quite contentious, with some leaders supporting Anyanwu and others recognizing Ude-Okoye. Despite the Supreme Court’s verdict reinstating Anyanwu, some organs within the PDP still haven’t recognized him as the valid secretary, leaving the matter unsettled. The controversy has sparked intense debate and power struggles within the PDP, affecting the party’s unity and stability ahead of the 2027 general elections.

There is also the Nyesom Wike factor. Anyanwu is a close ally of the FCT Minister who, in turn, is a close associate of President Tinubu’s. Anyanwu’s refusal to sign the notice of NEC meeting to INEC is a plot to prevent the PDP from functioning, with APC as the ultimate beneficiary of the chaos. By the end of this year, political parties will commence activities leading to the holding of congresses and primaries mid next year.

If the PDP does not resolve its leadership crisis (this is unlikely), it has no chance of fielding candidates for the 2027 elections. This explains why elected officials who would be seeking a second term in 2027 are bailing out of the party.

Looking back, the PDP should learn from its mistakes. In the first instance, it committed a fantastic blunder by not kicking Wike out of the party since early last year when it was clear that he would be a clog in the wheel of progress. Wike is working for the advancement of APC and disintegration of PDP.

He’s now holding the party to ransom, fueled by his personal grievances against Atiku Abubakar. Does anybody expect Gov. Eno to watch idly as power play and intrigues consumed the party?

But many like Kenneth Okonkwo, the former Nollywood actor, who recently criticized Gov. Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom State for leaving the party, probably do not have a keen understanding of the plots and deceptions designed to frustrate the party.

I refer them to President Tinubu’s speech at the National Assembly on June 12 in which he stated that he is excited to see the PDP disintegrate. That’s telling enough. Politics is all about advancing self and group interests. Gov. Eno has made a judgment call to leave the PDP. His choice should be respected.

Kenneth Okonkwo himself has also moved around quite a bit. Originally in APC, he defected to Labour Party in 2022 where he worked for Peter Obi as his spokesperson. After the 2023 elections, he parted with Obi (some say he was not satisfied with his remuneration) and went on to dish insults to the Labour Party Presidential candidate.

Just this week, there are reports that Okonkwo been hired by Atiku Abubarkar as a new spokesman. He will take the place of Daniel Bwala who was with the former Vice President during the elections, but has since early this year ported to President Tinubu as one of the numerous presidential spokespersons.

“You cannot hold illegal NEC meeting, INEC cautions PDP

The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC has cautioned Peoples Democratic Party PDP, over its National Executive Committee declaring that it violates party regulations and guidelines.

This was contained in a statement signed by the acting secretary of the commission, Hauru Aminu stating that:

“The Commission draws your attention that the notice is not in compliance with the
requirement of part 2(12)3 of the Regulations and Guidelines for Political Parties,
2022 that provides ‘the National Chairman and National Secretary of the Party

submit same to the Commission.’ Be guided.

With this development, the PDP has been placed under confusion mode over the scheduled meeting.

  • Bode George dismisses claims of PDP collapse in Lagos

Bode George dismisses claims of PDP collapse in Lagos

A former PDP Deputy National Chairman, Chief Bode George, has likened the party’s structure in Lagos and Nigeria to the root of an Iroko or Lebanon oak tree.

George stated this on Monday while addressing journalists after a PDP stakeholders’ meeting in Lagos. He denied claims that the PDP structure had collapsed.

Some Lagos PDP chieftains, including the 2023 governorship candidate, Dr Abdul-Azeez Adediran (Jandor), and spokesman, Alh. Hakeem Amode, recently defected to rival APC.

They claimed that the PDP’s structure had been collapsed into the ruling party. George described their statement as “nonsensical” and rejected the claim.

He stated that all organisations face challenging moments, but PDP would endure because its root is very deep and firmly established across the nation.

“I want to assure our leaders that the Iroko political party is very much alive,” George said.

He criticised the defectors, describing them as mere caricatures. “Who are these people in PDP?” he asked rhetorically, questioning their influence and relevance.

George regretted that a respected PDP elder endorsed Jandor in 2023, leading to him receiving the party’s flag. He now considers that endorsement unfortunate.

“It is absolutely nonsensical to say the PDP structure in Lagos State has collapsed into APC,” George insisted.

He said the party’s current internal crisis is solvable. “This party is an Iroko tree, like an oak in Lebanon.

“No matter the wind or storm, the Iroko will stand because of its deep roots. That is why we’ve survived till today,” he said.

George said the PDP is assessing its self-inflicted mistakes and has learnt valuable lessons from the 2023 election experience.

“These people believe we’ve collapsed, but it’s a lie,” he reiterated, dismissing the defectors’ claims as deliberate misinformation.

He said the PDP would no longer tolerate the imposition of candidates in future elections, as occurred during the last poll cycle.

“We are determined that anyone contesting must go through the people. From now on, no more ‘Baba says’ imposition,” George said.

On the emergency rule in Rivers, George urged President Bola Tinubu to reinstate suspended Gov. Sim Fubara and respect the people’s democratic mandate.

He warned that the President’s actions must not threaten the foundations of Nigeria’s hard-won democracy, especially in politically tense states like Rivers.

George criticised Tinubu’s formal request to the National Assembly seeking approval of key appointments in Rivers under the emergency framework.

He noted that the President had asked for confirmation of a chairman and six members of the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC).

The request also covered appointments to the Primary Healthcare Board, the Civil Service Commission, and the Local Government Civil Service Commission.

“This move raises serious concerns about power concentration and undermines democratic institutions,” George said, urging the President to act with restraint.

He added that Tinubu must not empower the Rivers Sole Administrator, Vice Adm. Ibok-Ete Ibas (Rtd), to conduct council elections or fill key posts.

George urged the President to prioritise Nigeria’s pressing issues — democracy, insecurity, hunger, joblessness, and social vices — over political control.

PDP stakeholders at the meeting included Sen. Motorola Bucknor and Chief Aduke Maina.

Others present were Dr Niran Adeniji, Dr Layi Ogunbambi, Dr Amos Fawole, Capt. Tunji Shelle (retd.), and Dr Seye O’Dairo.

Also in attendance were Alh. Ismail Abiola, Alh. Akorode Imam, Alhaja Babs Olorunkemi, Alhaja Tanwa Olusi, and Elder John Agbaje.

Additional leaders included Chief Ahmed Alashe and members of the PDP Local Government Area Chairmen Forum.
