We are working to make PDP the choice for Nigerians – Damagum

The National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Umar Damagum, has reaffirmed the party’s resilience and focus in navigating the country’s current challenges, positioning itself as a credible alternative for Nigerians.

Damagum said this during his remarks at the PDP’s 102nd National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting, on Monday in Abuja.

He emphasised that Nigerians continued to look to the PDP not just as the leading opposition party, but as the only viable platform capable of restoring hope, equity, and justice to the nation.

“The renewed confidence in the PDP is a clear reminder of the responsibility we carry.

“From one convention to another, our party has consistently demonstrated internal democracy, inclusivity, and respect for collective decision-making, values that remain our guiding principles,” Damagum said.

He also reiterated the commitment of the current National Working Committee (NWC) under his leadership to deliver a successful elective national convention that will produce strong leadership to guide the party into the 2027 general elections.

Also speaking at the meeting, Gov. Bal. Mohammed of Bauchi State and Chairman of the PDP Governors’ Forum, expressed optimism that the party was steadily repositioning itself to provide Nigerians a level playing field to achieve their aspirations.

“We are working diligently to make the PDP the party of choice for Nigerians, a party known for unity and proven capacity to lead.

“In spite of internal and external challenges, we are managing the situation carefully and collectively to ensure a smooth path toward the convention.”

Mohammed confirmed that all outstanding issues relating to state congresses had been resolved through the collaborative efforts of the NWC, governors, and party elders.

“Today, all communications to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) have been properly signed by our NWC, and there are no lingering disputes.

“We are on track and committed to ensuring that the PDP remains strong, cohesive, and forward-looking,” he added.

He also called on party leaders to avoid actions that could cause disaffection and urged unity, particularly at the state level.

Senate Minority Leader, Sen. Abba Moro, called on governors and stakeholders to build on the current peace and unity within the party as it prepared for the 2027 general election.

“We are confident that with continued unity and commitment, the PDP will be stronger and highly competitive in the upcoming elections.
“We believe in our collective strength, and we believe the PDP is on its way back,” Moro said.

On his part, Minority Leader of the House of Representatives, Rep. Kingsley Chinda, encouraged party members to remain resolute and committed while reducing internal suspicion.

“Some of us in the House have had concerns about the party’s direction, but based on the chairman’s remarks today, we are beginning to feel reassured,” Chinda noted.

He urged members to make the necessary sacrifices and take decisions that would move the party forward, for the benefit of Nigerians who continue to place their hope in the PDP.

Just In: PDP zones presidential ticket to South ahead of 2027 elections

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Monday, August 25th,  zoned its presidential ticket to the South while retaining the existing National Working Committee (NWC) zoning arrangement ahead of its November elective convention.

TheNewGuru.com(TNG)  reports that the decision was taken at the party’s 102nd National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting held on Monday at the national headquarters in Abuja.

The PDP National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, while speaking to journalists after the meeting said the decision followed the presentation of the zoning committee’s report, chaired by Bayelsa State Governor Douye Diri.

Ologunagba stated, “NEC recommended that the North and South should retain their current NWC positions. NEC also resolved that since the National Chairman of the party is zoned to the North, the PDP 2027 Presidential ticket is hereby zoned to the South.”

The publicity secretary added that the NEC expressed satisfaction with preparations for the party’s national convention scheduled for November 15–16 in Ibadan, Oyo State.

According to him, the convention will be a crucial step in strengthening the PDP ahead of the 2027 general elections.

    Damagum Confirmed As National Chairman

The National Executive Committee (NEC) also confirmed Ambassador Iliya Damagum as the new National Chairman of the party. His appointment, which was announced during the meeting, comes after several months of interim leadership following the departure of former Chairman Iyorchia Ayu.

The NEC meeting, which began at 2 PM, focused on deliberating the proposals from the zoning committee and discussing preparations for the upcoming convention in November.

JUST IN: PDP confirms Damagum as National Chairman

National Executive Committee (NEC) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has confirmed Umar Damagum as the substantive National Chairman of the party until its elective national convention scheduled for November.

The confirmation was one of the key resolutions reached during the ongoing 102nd NEC meeting held at the party’s national secretariat in Abuja.

Damagum took the oath of office during the meeting, administered by the party’s National Legal Adviser, Kamaldeen Ajibade, in accordance with Article 65 of the PDP Constitution.

The decision came less than three months before the PDP’s national convention, slated to hold from Nov. 15 to Nov. 16 in Ibadan, Oyo State.

In his acceptance speech, Damagum expressed gratitude to the party’s leadership for the confidence reposed in him and the National Working Committee (NWC).

“Before now, I thought all we were doing was not being appreciated. This gesture is not just for me, but for the entire NWC. I owe it to them.

“To have navigated this party this far, we came in at a time when things were very hard, but to the glory of God, we are still intact as one indivisible party,” he added.

Damagum had assumed the role of acting national chairman on March 28, 2023, following a Benue State High Court order that confirmed the removal of former Chairman, Dr Iyorchia Ayu.

At the time, PDP National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, announced Damagum’s appointment, citing Section 45 (2) of the PDP Constitution (as amended in 2017).

Prior to his appointment, Damagum served as the PDP Deputy National Chairman (North).

They declared support for Sen. Shehu Buba as their preferred candidate for the 2027 governorship election.

“His projects, ranging from water supply initiatives, youth employment, and road construction, to scholarships and support for healthcare and education, demonstrate his commitment to the people,” Danmaliki stated.

Mr Sabo Mohammed, of the planning sub-committee, noted that Buba’s goodwill extended beyond his senatorial district, saying his popularity across all 20 Local Government Areas would be instrumental in mobilising support for the APC.

Another party stakeholder, Hussaini Wunti, criticised the current PDP-led government for what he described as inadequate support for small businesses and local development.

He expressed confidence that under Buba’s leadership, the APC would restore hope and progress in Bauchi State.

Jibrin Jibrin, s stakeholder also urged residents to rally behind the senator, describing him as a visionary capable of ending what he called “years of stagnation.”

Representatives from Zungur, Galambi, and Miri districts pledged full grassroots support for the endorsement, promising to work tirelessly to deliver victory for the APC in 2027.

The stakeholders said that their united backing of Buba marked the beginning of a broader movement aimed at returning the APC to Government House and delivering renewed development to Bauchi State.

  • Why we defected to ADC — Ex-Lagos PDP chairman, other chieftains

Why we defected to ADC — Ex-Lagos PDP chairman, other chieftains

A former chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party(PDP)in Lagos State, retired Capt. Tunji Shelle, on Saturday resigned his membership of the party, defecting to the African  Democratic Party (ADC).

NAN reports that Shelle and other  PDP bigwigs as well as some Labour Party members  joined ADC at an affirmation ceremony  in Lagos.

A former PDP BOT member, Dr Abimbola Ogunkelu, another  former State PDP Chairman, Chief Muritala Ashorobi; PDP Vice Chairman (Lagos East), Tai Benedict; Ex- Youth Leader, Chief Niyi Adams ,and Rahman Owokoniran ,Ex-South West Secretary, were among stalwarts who defected with Shelle.

The ADC National Secretary, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, with other ADC chieftains, received  Shelle and others into the party.

Speaking with NAN, Shelle  said he and and others decided to dump the PDP because of the ” gross indiscipline and endless crises” in the party.

He said they were disappointed that the leadership of PDP could not halt the “destabilising activities” of some national leaders of the party.

Shelle  said that  PDP leaders, like the Minister of Federal Capital Territory(FCT), Mr Nyesom Wike, were not working for the progress of the party.

He accused Wike of working  for the  All Progressives Congress(APC),while still  claiming membership  of PDP.

Shelle said: Wike cannot hijack the party and the rest of us continue to look as if we are helpless or we are no human beings.

“I don’t take it. I don’t like being subjected to such ridicule.

“One man cannot not say he is working for APC while on the other hand keeps holding PDP into ransom. I think the leaders (PDP leaders)are compromised”.

He said his defection to ADC with other PDP leaders  had  further weakened  the former ruling  party.

“PDP is now empty with all its leaders moving to ADC in Lagos,” he said.

Shelle, who noted that ADC had tested and trusted politicians in its fold , said that the party was strong enough to stand against the ruling party in 2027.

He said that ADC’s Interim Chairman, Sen. David Mark and  Aregbesola, have the capacity to steer the party to victory.

“There are no distractions in ADC. The party  leaders are not people anyone can buy over.

“ADC has all it takes  to save the situation in Nigeria and  give the people the country of their dream ,” he said.

He said the support for ADC was growing by the day and urged Nigerians to join the party.

“People are behind us, we are not fighting the battle alone.

“We expect Nigerians to join the movement so that all of us can win together. With Nigerians behind us, ADC will definitely make a difference,” he added.

Also speaking at the event, Owokoniran, who noted that PDP had lost track, said, ” PDD is gone, there is nothing there. ADC is the only opportunity to challenge the ruling APC.”

Also speaking, a former PDP Vice Chairman (Lagos East) ,Mr Tai Benedict, said that many more leaders and members of the former ruling party were still on their way into ADC.

“We are emptying PDP members in Lagos State into ADC. Others are on the way, they want to take their last supper before coming,” Benedict said.

Also, Chief Niyi Adams, a former Lagos State PDP Youth Leader, claimed that more than 5,000 PDP members defected into ADC across the 20 Local Governments.

Adams, who decried persistent internal crises  in PDP, said defectors would work assiduously to ensure victory for ADC in 2027 general elections.

The ex-party chieftain said he did not think  PDP would be able to resolve its crisis even after the November National Convention.

Fresh crisis in PDP as Southern leaders disown Lagos zoning meeting

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has sunk deeper into crisis over plans by a section of the party to micro-zone its presidential ticket to a particular zone in the south without wider consultations.

Although some stakeholders in the south are clamouring for zoning, there is no consensus on the zone that would produce the candidates among the Southwest, Southeast and Southsouth.

Also, some stakeholders have rejected the agitation for zoning to the South, saying that the ticket should be open to the six zones.

Today, a meeting has been slated for Lagos to discuss the proposal for zoning, with the aim of micro-zoning the ticket to either of the three zones.

The meeting, tagged the “PDP Southern Zoning Consultative Summit”, was convened by the party’s Zoning Committee at the Legend Hotel, Ikeja.

There are allegations that some chieftains are rooting for micro-zoning to either Southwest or Southsouth.

According to The Nation, there have been calls on Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde and former President Goodluck Jonathan to join the 2027 presidential race.

But irked by the micro-zoning move, PDP state chairmen, former governors and National Assembly members disowned the Southern zoning meeting, describing it as divisive and unconstitutional.

PDP House of Representatives Leader Kingsley Chinda said the Lagos meeting has excluded and sidelined critical party leaders.

He told reporters in Abuja that any party meeting where zoning, power rotation and distribution of offices are to be discussed, it should be all-inclusive.

Chinda said the Lagos meeting has brazenly disregarded the statutory organs of the party and violated the criteria of inclusivity, consultation and participation.

He said, “We dismiss the resolution and outcome of the meeting. It is not binding and not reflective of the opinion of the generality of stakeholders.”

Chinda said any decision reached in secrecy and seclusion cannot be consensus-driven, adding that it would be resisted in accordance with the constitution of the party.

He therefore, urged members of the party to disregard the outcome.

Also, state Chairmen, former governors, National Assembly members, and other key party stakeholders from the South East and South South zones said they were neither invited nor consulted.

In another statement, the state Chairmen of Imo, Abia, Cross River, Akwa Ibom, and Rivers—Austin Nwachukwu, Abraham Amah, Venatius Ikem, Rt. Hon Aniekan Akpan, and Aaron Chukwuemeka—alongside National Vice Chairman (South-East) Hon. Chidiebere Egwu Goodluck and Chinda, said the meeting’s outcomes should not be recognized.

The statement read, “The PDP has always stood for inclusivity, fairness, consultation, and collective decision-making. Any meeting that ignores key leaders and elected officials breaks trust, causes division, and threatens party unity. We therefore, reject any outcomes from this summit as neither binding nor representative of the PDP in Southern Nigeria.

“The meeting is also premature and seems aimed at serving the interests of a few, especially since the Zoning Committee has not yet submitted its report for party approval.”

“We remain fully committed to the unity, stability, and success of the PDP. We urge all leaders and stakeholders to resist any attempts to manipulate zoning through secretive or unfair methods.

“The Southeast and Southsouth, together with the South West, stand united in promoting fairness, justice, and equity. As custodians of our members’ mandate, we will defend the integrity of the party and ensure that any decisions affecting Southern Nigeria are made openly, consultatively, and inclusively.”

  • Canada’s redefinition of terrorism – By Pius Mordi

Canada’s redefinition of terrorism – By Pius Mordi

The two major political parties in Nigeria – the All Progressives Congress (APC) and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) – were collectively incredulous to the ruling of the Canadian Federal Court which classified both parties as terrorists organisations. It was a judgement that ran against every definition of the word, terrorism in Nigeria. To the political leadership, terrorism manifests only when gunmen, known and unknown, wield weapons and wreak havoc on the people.

In its official response, the Federal Ministry of Information resorted to the old and anachronistic use of the regular defence of government’s misdeeds, of the country being “sovereign nation with a robust legal and constitutional framework.” It provides the alibi for any action taken to maintain “law and order.” It is what informed the justification of the the withholding of discharge certificate of Miss Ushie Uguamaye, a youth corps member on national service who was sternly reprimanded for criticising President Bola Tinubu, after she complained in a Tiktok post where she described Tinubu as a “terrible leader.” Uguamaye was punished unjustly for her outspoken criticism of the government. The backlash from Nigerians was unequivocal, forcing the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) to issue a statement that her certificate was withheld after extending her service year by two months as a disciplinary action against her for missing April clearance.

A lawyer, Victor Giwa, speaking on Channels Television, faulted the trivialisation of the judgement by APC and PDP, noting that the ruling was in line with the Canada’s criminal law. Douglas Egharevba, a Nigerian seeking refugee status, had instituted the suit to legalise his refugee status. Inadvertently, Egharevba has introduced a new narrative on what constitutes terrorism in Nigeria. According to Giwa, “Canadian law, under the Canadian Criminal Code, Section 83, Subsection 01, defines an act of terrorism to be any political, religious, or ideological act that was done with the intention of causing death, serious bodily harm, intimidation, and risk to any life.”

The definition broadens the misdeeds of the government and political parties beyond the current military campaign against terror. In 2011, a number of young men and women had been killed in Niger State after then candidate Muhammadu Buhari had threated to visit violence on the country if the election was “rigged.” On coming into office in 2015, Buhari adopted arm twisting tactics to make the judiciary, a co-equal arm of government, subservient to him. First, he removed Walter Onnoghen, the Chief Justice of the Federation, unilaterally using an agency controlled by his office. Then a reign of assaults on judges under the guise of fighting corruption among judicial officers in the dead of the night began.

And the general elections that brought various levels of elected representatives? It took a falling out among politicians for prominent elements in their rank to openly flaunt their ingenuity in arranging victory for their parties. It was an audacious display of impunity that showed that votes by the people no longer counted much. When Nasir el-Rufai revealed how his Fulani kinsmen were shipped into the country ahead of the 2015 election to unleash mayhem on the country should President Goodluck Jonathan fail to give them the result of the presidential election they desired, it became clear the insecurity that has now locked down parts of the country was orchestrated. Unfortunately, President Jonathan beat El Rufai and his ilk to their game and gave them the result they wanted. Having tasted the tremendous cash that came with kidnapping for ransome, not even El Rufai’s payments to the gunmen they imported could persuade them to return to their countries they were recruited.

When opposition parties are taken over by paid agents in order to render them ineffective and ungovernable, the judgement by Justice Phuong Ngo is given credence. When a state government is overthrown and an unconstitutional Sole Administrator answerable to Abuja is appointed in its place, it is terrorism taken to unprecedented height.

Going by Justice Phuong Ngo, Nigeria has been a terrorist state riding roughshod on the rule of law for many years. There is an irony in the judgement Egharevba got. He may not have got the sympathy he sought from a country with the pedigree for protecting foreigners seeking refuge. Buhari took delight in quickly getting the Independent People of Biara (IPOB) designated a terrorist organisation, but his Fulani kinsmen who have been globally acknowledged as one of the most deadly killer-group are only called bandits engaging in skirmishes with farmers.

Femi Falana has put the Canadian judgement in proper perspective. It is up to APC and PDP, by extension, the federal government, to prove the Canadian judgement wrong, he said.

When the various administrations of the political class were passing the baton of impunity from one party to another, they equated holding public office and access to the public treasury with patriotism and hard work. Buhari called the younger generation lazy. But thanks to information and communication technology, the world has become a global village. The misdeeds of the past catching up with the country and gradually shutting the exit doors to the rulers. As the saying goes, the hills have eyes. And the walls have ears too.
