  • Udenwa’s indictment of politicians, blame of PDP’s woes on APC – By Ehichioya Ezomon

Udenwa’s indictment of politicians, blame of PDP’s woes on APC – By Ehichioya Ezomon

Recently, the seemingly urbane and easy-going former Imo State Governor Achike Udenwa (1999-2007), chewed two issues at the same time: Nigerian politicians’ propensity to buying their way into elective office; and alleged interference of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the affairs of the opposition, principally the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Udenwa, featuring on Edmund Obilo’s ‘State Affairs’ show, a political podcast, as reported by Vanguard on March 2, 2025, posited that, “Nigeria is in a situation where rich politicians can buy the Independent Electoral Commission (INEC), the Police, and the Army to win elections.”

The Udenwa claim isn’t something new in Nigeria where “anything goes.” But it’s concerning the failure of the podcaster(s) to unravel if Udenwa, ex-Minister of Commerce and Industry (2008-2010), is sqeakly clean in the political arena, and as governor for eight years.

According to Udenwa, “Our society has grown to such a level where, if you say, ‘vote for me,’ I am (we are) no longer asking, ‘what can you do? What are your antecedents? What type of character do you have?’ We don’t ask such questions again. And, of course, even if I don’t vote for you, you can buy your way through if you have the right amount of money.”

Could politicians buy the INEC, the Police, the Army, and the voters? Udenwa replied, “You can buy everybody,” and affirmed that elections in Nigeria are “about buying, but that the practice must be curbed for the correct leaders to emerge.”

This is where the podcaster(s) failed the journalistic test – that’s if they’re really journalists, as it’s difficult to identify ones among social media posters, who parade as such – as there’s a couple of begging questions to ask.

    • “Did Udenwa buy his way to the seat of Government in Owerri, capital city of Imo State, for his two terms of four years each in 1999 and 2003, in that order? • “On good conscience, as a Christian, could Udenwa affirm (the Bible) that he didn’t deploy Imo State’s resources and assets to prosecute, especially his re-election as governor?

Udenwa’s answers to the questions could’ve elicited further probing into his adherence to accountability, probity and transparency while he’s in government as a governor, and as a minister, respectively!
It’s apt, though, that Udenwa’s blanket allegation of politicians buying their way into office is self-deprecating, without exonerating himself or the PDP from blame, or pointing fingers at only his opponents and opposing parties!

Politicians – more than the Military – are Nigeria’s real problems due to their “do-die-die” kind of politics, right from the First Republic (1960-1966) that ended in a conflagration partly traced to the elections in the Western Region, which the Military capitilised on to disrupt civil rule from 1966 to 1979 (13 years), and from 1983 to 1999 (16 years), totaling 29 years.

Politicians go into elections with a mindset of winning; no room for losing. That’s why they deploy all means legal, unlawful and unorthodox, including huge financial outlays to bribe party members; buy votes from voters; secure assistance of electoral officials and security agents to aid rigging; and arm thugs to snatch or destroy ballot materials, and maim or kill opponents to gain the upper hand.

When they’re defeated by their more adept opponents in electoral manipulation and malfeasance, politicians mostly refuse to admit failure, but go to the election tribunals to complain about their “stolen mandate,” and pursue the petitions through the judicial chain: from the High Court to the Appeal Court and the Supreme Court, the final arbiter in legal matters.

We’ve seen cases, where defeated candidates go back to relitigate the apex court decided matters at the high courts, which boldly entertain such overreach that aims to undermine the hierarchical and pyramidal judicial powers and pronouncements therefrom.

Losing at the poll and in the courts means millions or billions going down the drain. But victory at the poll or in the courts gives politicians an avenue to recoup and defray their election expenses directly from the public purse or via third parties in the form of inflated contracts for returns from the money earmarked for such projects.

Because of monetisation of elective offices in Nigeria – and the immense powers and influence that officeholders wield – politicians exploit deliberately-created loopholes in the operating rulebooks that reward the waywards in government.

Hence they dip their hands in the public till, make away with billions in local and foreign currencies, stash some in safe havens – which their yet-unborn generations can’t exhaust in their lifetimes – and deploy more on fleet of exotic vehicles, private jets, choice properties, and frolics across the globe.

When the law seldom catches up with politicians, it comes to little or nothing, as lawyers and the courts connive to dismiss or drag, for years, the allegations leveled by unstrengthened anti-corruption agencies, which may also compromise and file weak charges against the treasury looters.

From the forgoing, one tends to agree with Chief Udenwa that politicians with deep pockets can buy all the stakeholders involved in the processes of election in Nigeria, to get into office, and that, “the practice must be curbed for the correct leaders to emerge.”

But as the Apostle Paul observes in Romans 3:23: “All have sinned and come short of the glory of God.” So, it’s time Udenwa and the political class went down on their knees, to seek forgiveness from God for their electorally-monetised sins against the Nigerian people, and pledge to sin no more!

Even as he admitted PDP’s internal problems, Udenwa, a member of the party’s Board of Trustees (BOT), said, “There are external hands trying to destroy the PDP through internal sources,” without mentioning the names, and added, “We are still battling the problem, and I believe PDP will not be destroyed.”

Characteristically, Udenwa regurgitated the talking point of the PDP – (and the entire opposition, which’s a new megaphone in former Kaduna State Governor and ex-Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, Mallam Nasir el-Rufai, a mind bender, who can spin any issue to his advantage) – to blaming others, but themselves for failure to adhere to the dictates of their party’s constitution and run their affairs in line with democratic principles and standards.

Their main punching bag is the APC, which dislodged them from power in 2015, just 16 years into their dream 60-year suzareignty over Nigeria. Since then, the who-is-who in the PDP hasn’t said anything tangible until they blame their self-induced and inflicted problems and division at the national and sub-national levels on the APC and its leadership.

Why do PDP and its members play the ostrich: bury their heads in the sand, and turn around to blame the APC as the “bird of prey” for spotting their uncovered hides? They know the genesis of their problems, and won’t place the blame where it belongs, but fish for a scapegoat elsewhere!

For instance, is it the APC that influenced or coerced former Vice President Atiku Abubakar to lead seven PDP governors of Jigawa, Kano, Sokoto, Niger, Rivers, Kwara and Adamawa to walk out of the Special National Delegates Convention at the Eagle Square in Abuja on August 31, 2013?

Leaving the convention venue, Atiku, the governors, the PDP Acting National Chairman, Abubakar Kawu Baraje and some National Assembly members moved to the Yar’Adua Centre for an emergency meeting, and addressed a press conference in protest of the convention organisers’ disqualification of over 50 of the 75 aspirants – presumed loyal to opponents of second term-seeking President Goodluck Jonathan – from vying for the 17 available positions in the National Working Committee (NWC) of the party.

Subsequently, they formed a splitter group, named New Peoples Democratic Party (nPDP); and Atiku and five of the governors of Adamawa, Kano, Sokoto, Kwara and Rivers defected and dissolved the nPDP into the opposition APC, which defeated then-ruling PDP and President Jonathan in 2015.

Fast-forward to 2023, and history somehow repeated itself, only this time in a reverse scenario but with the same Atiku as the lead actor. Returning again to the PDP pre-2019 poll – and clinched the presidential ticket, but was defeated by President Muhammadu Buhari for his second term in office – Atiku breached the PDP constitution during the 2023 election cycle.

The PDP constitution forbids the presidential candidate or president and party chairman to emerge from the same region, North or South. Still, Atiku from the North insisted that Dr Iyorcha Ayu, a northerner and former Senate President (1992-1993), remain in office as chairman until the end of the 2023 election.

At the PDP convention/presidential primary in Abuja for the 2023 poll, Atiku defeated then-Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike (now Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja) to the second spot. The consensus of the PDP leaders was for Atiku to pick Wike as his running mate, but Atiku chose then-Delta State Governor Ifeanyi Okowa.

An incensed Wike – who, along with other four aggrieved PDP governors of Abia, Benue, Enugu and Oyo, had formed a group nick-named G-5 (PDP-G5) – pounced on the issue of zoning of the National Chairmanship to the South, as a precondition to work for the Atiku-Okowa ticket at the February 25, 2023, presidential election.

With Atiku sticking to his guns, and backing Ayu to retain the PDP chair – the G-5 governors worked against him, and he lost the five states in 2023, thus reinforcing the axioms: “Those who are too clever sometimes overreach themselves,” and “Don’t cut your nose to spite your face.” Had Atiku let go the PDP chairmanship to the South, the G-5 governors would’ve worked for his ticket, for enhanced chances at the poll.

Has the PDP learned any lessons from its missteps in 2015 and 2023? NO! The party has failed to mend especially the 2023 cracks in its platform, which’ve widened and deepened, such that there’s pandemonium at a recent meeting of the BOT (which Udenwa belongs) in Abuja, following a clash by members of the Atiku and Wike factions.

The PDP and its members should face their problems squarely, and stop blaming the APC as stirring internal crisis in their fold. The leadership should respect the party’s constitution, and enthrone internal democracy based on the rule of law and inclusiveness of all members! Enough of the blame game!

PDP govs prefer Tinubu to Atiku for survival – Fayose

Former Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose stated that most  governors on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, prefer to align with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu than former Vice President Atiku Abubakar.

Fayose disclosed this on Channels TV’s Politics Today, where he described the coalition proposed by Atiku as a “dead horse.”

Fayose said: “The coalition is a dead horse ab initio. Tell me one positive person that has given his words in support of this coalition.”

He continued: “The governors’ stance in Ibadan is to tell Atiku that we are not with you, we are going nowhere, we have our own identity.

“That coalition is just the imagination of people trying to bring it to fruition. It’s a waste of time. The governors are fighting for their own survival, and they don’t need an Atiku to fight for their survival.

“In actual fact, most of them prefer a Tinubu for their survival than an Atiku. Don’t let us deceive and fool ourselves; there is nothing called coalition. Obi can’t go to Atiku; Atiku can’t go to Obi.

“You see the rate at which people are decamping from PDP. How many people are defecting from APC? Something is fundamentally wrong in PDP that needs to be fixed.”

  • Obvious PDP is not ready for 2027 election – Wike

Obvious PDP is not ready for 2027 election – Wike

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has said that it is obvious that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is not ready for the 2027 elections.

The minister disclosed this during a live media parley in Abuja on Friday.

He stated that the opposition party does not have a formidable structure to defeat the ruling All Progressives Congress in 2027.

Speaking during the media parley, Wike said: “The PDP is not ready for the 2027 election. It is very obvious. For instance, I have an examination and I am going to class to read. Indeed, am I reading? Am I studying? You don’t need to deceive anybody that you are reading. You are only trying to read so that people will see that you have carried your bag to class.

“That is the situation of the PDP. So, they cannot say for sure that they are ready for 2027. Power struggle cannot help the party.”

  • Orbih lacks authority to donate secretariat to PDP in Edo – Aziegbemi

Orbih lacks authority to donate secretariat to PDP in Edo – Aziegbemi

Dr Tony Aziegbemi, Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Caretaker Committee in Edo, says Chief Dan Orbih has no authority to either rent, donate, or assign properties to the party.

Orbih, who is the PDP National Vice Chairman (South-South), had on Wednesday announced the donation of a secretariat to the party in Edo.

Reacting to the development in a statement issued on Thursday in Benin, Aziegbemi asserted that Orbih was no longer a registered member of the PDP and therefore could not make such contributions on behalf of the party.

“We are compelled to respond due to the numerous calls and inquiries from concerned party members, the media, and the good people of Edo ,” he said.

“Let it be made abundantly clear that Chief Dan Orbih is no longer a registered member of the PDP.”

According to Aziegbemi,  Orbih lacks the authority and legal standing to rent, donate, or assign any property whatsoever to the Edo PDP.

He further described the purported secretariat as “a mere façade,” claiming it belonged to the All Progressives Congress (APC), the party Orbih now allegedly supports.

According to Aziegbemi, Orbih’s tenure as South-South Zonal Chairman of the PDP officially ended on March 9, saying, “he currently holds no official position within the party.”

He explained that the zone’s administrative affairs were now overseen by a duly constituted Caretaker Committee led by Chief Emma Ogidi.

“This latest drama is clearly an attempt to distract, disrupt, and destabilize the solid structures of the Edo PDP,” Aziegbemi stated.

He urged the people of Edo to disregard such distractions and focus instead on the progress being made under the leadership of the recognized and legitimate PDP leadership.

Aziegbemi concluded by reaffirming that the Edo PDP caretaker committee remained united, focused, and firmly in control of all party affairs and structures across the state.

    2027: Atiku’s candidacy won’t destroy PDP – Party Chieftain

A chieftain of Peoples Democratic Party(PDP), Chief Segun Adewale, has dismissed a statement made by another party stalwart, Chief Olabode George, that the candidacy of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar will affect the party’s chances in 2027.

Adewale, a former Lagos State Chairman of the party, dismissed the statement on Wednesday in Lagos, stressing that Abubakar was an asset to the  the party, not a liability

George,  a former PDP Deputy National Chairman, had said during an interview on Channels Television  on Monday that Abubakar’s candidacy would spell doom for the  party in 2027.

Recall that Abubakar was the PDP Presidential candidate in the 2023 general elections  and came second behind President Bola Tinubu.

Reacting, Adewale said it was wrong for anyone to say the emergence of Atiku would undermine  the party’s victory in 2027 ,contending the chances  of the party would rather be affected by  anti -party activities  and selfishness of some party leaders.

He said: “Atiku has been contributing to the party for years. Atiku would have won in the 2023 presidential election but for  the anti-party activities of some people like Bode George.

“Anti-party activities  led the PDP to where it is today. PDP would have won in 2023 and stayed in power ever since.

“They (some party leaders) made sure that the PDP votes were divided in Lagos and other states.PDP lost that election for that reaso,”he said.

He said that the party leadership should rather focus on curbing anti-party activities among leaders  instead of  attacking Abubakar.

The chieftain said that PDP should take a firm stand against those destroying the party through their actions and inactions.

“Some PDP leaders should be ashamed of themselves, especially those working for the opposition openly and without looking backward in every election.

“These are activities  affecting our chances and destroying  the party in Lagos State and at the national level in all electoral cycles since 2015.

“If Atiku’s candidacy will destroy the PDP, what do we say of party leaders who openly told  PDP members to vote opposition in an election? Will that build or brighten the our chances?

“We must address the substance and stop chasing shadows, “the chieftain said.

According to him, some leaders  always fight PDP candidates and work  against them during elections.

“We should rather concentrate on those in the party but working for the opposition. This anti-party (activities)is our problem not Atiku’s candidacy,” he said.

Adewale cautioned  George against  speaking as if he was the voice of Lagos PDP.

  • Wike not PDP’s problem – Dan Orbih

Wike not PDP’s problem – Dan Orbih

Chief Dan Orbih, National Vice Chairman, PDP South-South chapter, has said that the FCT Minister Nyesom Wike was not the problem of the Peoples Democratic Party.

According to Orbih, the real problem of the PDP is those with entrenched interest in contesting every presidential election without respecting the provisions of the PDP constitution.

Orbih, also leader of the PDP Legacy Group in Edo, stated this while officially handing over the PDP new secretariat, he donated to the party on Wednesday in Benin.

He urged the Acting National Chairman, Amb. Iliya Damagun to initiate congresses that would bring in new leaders capable of repositioning the PDP and restoring its lost glory.

“PDP is a strong and formidable party, but it still has challenges that we cannot afford to ignore or sweep under the carpet.

“Wike is not the party’s problem. The real issue is those who want to run every time without following the party’s constitutional guidelines.

“We must put our differences aside and work with sincere party members to rebuild and reposition the PDP for future political battles ahead.

“People are mocking the PDP and asking where we are, but I tell you today, the PDP in Edo is fully back,” he said.

Orbih claimed that Edo PDP became homeless after the party was evicted from its former secretariat in January, a situation that left members deeply unsettled and disappointed.

He added that following the eviction, party leaders and members reached out to him, expressing their frustrations, and he promised them a befitting and permanent office.

“A few weeks ago, I made a commitment during our meeting to donate a secretariat to the party. Today, I have fulfilled that promise.

“PDP can not continue to be homeless. On January 17, 2025, our former chairman was removed from the party’s former secretariat along Airport Road.

“From January until today, Edo PDP has had no state secretariat. The party has operated without a physical office or a known central location.

“Today marks a new chapter. We celebrate the official opening of a befitting PDP state secretariat, putting an end to being labeled homeless,” he added.

Orbih also used the opportunity to caution members of the Edo PDP Caretaker Committee, urging them to stop issuing statements on behalf of the party.

He said members of the committee were not recognised by the PDP constitution and can no longer represent the party after working to undermine it.

“I look back and feel deeply saddened by the current state of our party, which once had two senators and a House of Representatives majority in the state.

“Today, PDP has no senator, only one House representatives member, and we have lost the governorship to the All Progressives Congress (APC),” he lamented.

“In my capacity as National Vice Chairman, South-South, I declare that those parading as Edo PDP Caretaker Committee members have no legitimacy or authority.

“From this day forward, we will not acknowledge any statements unless they come from those who will be managing PDP in Edo,” he concluded.

Orbih,  however commended Governor Monday Okpebholo for his humility and for respecting traditional institutions in the state.

“Today,  we are seeing a different act of governance,  we appreciate what you are doing and we urge you to continue,” he said.

  • Another PDP lawmaker defects to APC in Benin

Another PDP lawmaker defects to APC in Benin

Nicholas Asonsere, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) lawmaker, representing Ikpoba Okha Constituency in the Edo House of Assembly, has defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Asonsere’s defection brings the APC’s strength in the Assembly to 15 members against PDP’s nine.

He was presented with the party’s symbolic broom by the state’s Acting Chairman, Jarret Tenebe at the APC Secretariat on Wednesday in Benin.

Asonsere described his defection as “self-conditioned,” driven by Gov. Monday Okpebholo’s impactful projects in his constituency, particularly the construction of flyover in Ikpoba Hill.

“Somebody cannot be developing my immediate constituency, constructing a flyover there, and I’ll be on the left-hand side while he is on the right-hand side.

“That means I’m not ready to develop the constituency or the people I represent.

“I personally called the governor to express my desire to join the APC and be part of the progress.

“The governor’s developmental strides in such a short time, convinced me, he deserves our full support,” Asonsere said.

Quoting the scripture, the lawmaker noted, “When I was a child, I reasoned like a child, but now that I am a man, I should reason like a man.”

In his remark, Tenebe described the defection as “a political earthquake,” noting that Asonsere was a key political ally of two prominent PDP figures in Edo South.

“This is not just any defection. It is a sign that the PDP’s foundation is crumbling. Hon. Asonsere was once a pillar in the PDP and now, he has aligned with the future,” he said.

The party leader also extended an olive branch to PDP members, urging them to embrace Gov. Okpebholo’s development-driven leadership.

Insecurity: Be alive to your duties – PDP to Aiyedatiwa

Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ondo State has urged Gov. Lucky Aiyedatiwa to be alive to his duties of safeguarding the lives and property of residents of the state.

The party’s Director of Media and Publicity in the state, Mr Leye Igbabo, stated this in a statement issued on Tuesday in Akure.

Igbabo said that the party was alarmed by the alleged ceaseless killings of hapless residents of the state by gunmen.

He said that victims of such killings were lawfully engaging in their daily activities needed to bring food to their tables.

“The party cannot, in all honesty, find reasons why such assailants could operate without any form of resistance for months running, in a state where there is said to be a valid government in place.

“Gov. Aiyedatiwa has indeed failed in his constitutional duty as enshrined in Section 14(2)(b) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), in that he can no longer secure and protect lives and property of citizens of Ondo State.

“It is heart-wrenching to note that in less than one month, about 50 persons have been gruesomely massacred in various settlements within the state,” he said.

Igbabo expressed concerned that no arrest or prosecution had been made in the wake of these incidents.

He said that the party had been wondering if a government still exists in the state in the face of what he described as unprovoked and unrestrained killings.

“These killings are one too many and indicative of helplessness, hopelessness and huge compromise of those in the corridor of power in Ondo State,” he stated.

Igbabo urged President Bola Tinubu to urgently address the situation, as it appeared that the state government was incapacitated in tackling the menace.

  • 2027:” PDP will die if Atiku is fielded as flag bearer” -Bode George declares

2027:” PDP will die if Atiku is fielded as flag bearer” -Bode George declares

A member of the Board of Trustees of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Chief Bode George, says his party will meet its die if former Vice President Atiku Abubakar secures the party’s 2027 presidential ticket.

“If he (Atiku) picks it (PDP’s ticket), that is the end of this party. If he picks it by manipulation which was what was done the last time, we will not accept it,” the octogenarian revealed.

Atiku, PDP’s 2023 flag bearer, came second after ex-Lagos governor Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the last poll. The former vice president has been in a race to become Nigeria’s president for over three decades and has been the presidential candidate of different parties for six times.

Of late, Atiku championed an inter-party alliance that birthed a coalition on Thursday, March 20, 2025. The opposition arrowhead, alongside former Anambra governor Peter Obi, ex-Kaduna governor Nasir El-Rufai, amongst others, announced the coalition as a springboard to oust incumbent Tinubu whose administration has been accused of mismanaging the economy, with all-time high inflation and unprecedented cost of living.

The coalition is banking on the numerical strength of the votes recorded by Atiku and Obi in the last poll. In 2023, PDP’s Atiku and Labour Party’s Obi came second and third respectively with combined votes of over 12 million, more than four million above the total votes recorded by Tinubu who was declared the winner by electoral umpire INEC.

In a twist, PDP governors on Monday, April 14, 2025, rejected the coalition spearheaded by Atiku, ruling out any plan by the party for mergers or coalition.

George, during the television programme on Monday, applauded the PDP governors for putting on their thinking caps and rejecting the coalition led by Atiku.

The PDP BoT member said Atiku has not shown himself to be a leader of the party because he has not waded into the intra-party squabbles that have befallen the party in recent times.

“No, if he is the leader of the party, he would have waded into it (the crisis),” George said. “The fact that he was the presidential candidate of the party at the last election doesn’t mean he is a bona fide, fixated leader of the party. If he’s running for his private interest, it’s different from the interest of the party.”

Asked whether Atiku could be the flag bearer of the PDP in 2027, the PDP chieftain said,

“He cannot be. This is what I am saying. There was eight years in the north, there should be eight years in the south. That is the dictate, that is the doctrine of the PDP. I can’t say he cannot contest; he can go to any party because it is his constitutional right but as far as we are concerned, he cannot be the candidate.”

“There are rules. Section 7, Sub-section 3C of our constitution. It states that once the presidential candidate has been in the south for eight years, it had to go to the north. And after another eight years, it would come to the south. Is Atiku from the South-West, South-South or South-East?” George asked.

The PDP chieftain said he equally doesn’t want Tinubu to be re-elected in 2027, adding that he wants his party to win the next election with a southern candidate.
