Ex-PDP governors’ forum DG dumps party for ADC

Hon. C.I.D Maduabum, the immediate past Director General of the Peoples Democratic Party Governors’ Forum (PDP-GF), has defected to the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

Maduabum, a former two-time member of the House of Representatives, announced his defection in a statement he personally issued on Sunday in Abuja.

“The PDP today is a shadow of its former self”

He attributed the alleged hijack of the PDP as reason for his decision.

“After deep reflection, extensive consultations, and careful evaluation of the current political realities within the PDP, I have taken the difficult but necessary decision to resign my membership of the PDP with immediate effect.

While describing himself as a committed democrat, he said, “I have dedicated significant portions of my political life to building the PDP as a platform for democratic consolidation and national development.

“However, the soul of the party I once served with pride has been hijacked by self-serving, unscrupulous elements who are more interested in personal power grabs than in party discipline, internal democracy, or national interest.

“The PDP today is a shadow of its former self,” he said.

Maduabum added that the PDP had descended into chaos, internal betrayal, and systematic destruction by diverse forces who had no regard for the principles upon which the party was founded.

“Sadly, voices of reason are no longer welcome, and genuine reformers are vilified or silenced.

“I can no longer in good conscience remain in a house that has been stripped of its moral compass and overrun by opportunists.

“In light of this, I am proud to announce that I am joining the African Democratic Congress (ADC) — a party that now stands as the only credible democratic alternative for Nigeria,” he said.

He described ADC as an emerging beacon of hope for good governance, integrity, accountability, and inclusive politics.

He said that the ADC offered the opportunity for principled politics, genuine people-oriented leadership, and a platform for rebuilding the nation from the grassroots up.

He noted that the ADC coalition included progressive minded people such Mr Peter Obi and others.

Maduabum said that he joined the ADC not merely as a defector but as a reformer committed to helping build a new political culture.

“One based on merit, ideology, discipline, youth inclusion, and national unity,” he said.

He said that the time had come for all well-meaning Nigerians to take a stand against the decay in Nigeria political system.

“I call on all patriots, especially those disillusioned by the dysfunction in the traditional parties, to rally around this movement for a new Nigeria through the ADC.

“I remain committed to the democratic ideals of justice, equity, and service to the people.

“The struggle to rescue Nigeria and restore its promise continues — and it begins now on a new, firmer footing,” he said.

The letter reads partially; “I wish to formally notify you that I am resigning my Membership of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) with immediate effect.”

  • Atiku’s exit from PDP not new, we’re expecting his return – Damagum

Atiku’s exit from PDP not new, we’re expecting his return – Damagum

Acting National Chairman of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Amb. Iliya Damagum has described the resignation of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar from the party as a familiar and recurring development in PDP’s political history.

Speaking with newsmen on Friday in Bauchi, Damagum said: “This is not the first time; we’re expecting him back.”

According to him, PDP is neither shocked nor overly concerned about Atiku’s exit, adding that the party was already accustomed to his repeated exits and returns over the years.

The acting national chairman stated that the former vice-president’s movement aligned with a historical pattern, implying that the party viewed his latest resignation as part of his political strategy rather than a final break from PDP.

Damagum further hinted that the party’s calm response stemmed from the confidence it had in its own resilience or skepticism over the permanence of Atiku’s decision.

This, he said, was sequel to reports that he was forming a new political platform, Alliance for Democratic Congress, in preparation for future elections.

Atiku’s exit: PDP can’t die, party will be stronger before 2027 – Chieftain

Similarly, Prince Laja Adeoye, a Lagos State PDP Chieftain, has said the party cannot die with the exit of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, rather it will be stronger ahead of 2027 general elections.

Adeoye, a House of Representatives hopeful in Oshodi-Isolo Federal Constituency, said this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Friday in Lagos.

Abubakar, the PDP presidential candidate in 2019 and 2023, announced his resignation from the party on Wednesday, citing what he called intractable issues within his former ruling  party.

Though the former vice-president has not formally announced his defection to African Democratic Congress (ADC), the coalition of opposition leaders, led by him, had recently announced the adoption of the party as its platform for the 2027 general elections.

Reacting, Adeoye said that Abubakar’s exit would bring peace and tranquility to the party. According to him, the untamed presidential ambition of the former vice president had unsettled the party.

“PDP cannot die because one man left the party, as you know, this is not the first time Atiku is exiting the PDP, the party stands, regardless.

“PDP is rebuilding and will be stronger ahead of the 2027 election. One thing that is certain is that, a lot of people who have joined ADC will return to the PDP sooner or later as PDP gets more formidable.

“Many of them, including Atiku, will see that there is no road in the so-called ADC they are running to,” Adeoye said.

The chieftain, who noted that he was not against the coalition of political parties, said, “but it can only work when PDP, the largest party in Africa leads it, anything short of that is a waste of time.”

Prominent names such as Peter Obi, Rauf Aregbesola, Nasir El-Rufai, ,Rotimi Amaechi, among others, are in the coalition already.

Another headache for PDP as Edo only HoR Member resigns eyeing APC

It is another major headache for the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP as the House of Representatives from Edo State resigns eyeing the ruling APC.

Hon. Marcus Onobun, who represents the Esan West/Esan Central/Igueben Federal Constituency, expressed dismay over the persistent crises within the PDP, stating that the party’s internal wrangling has made it difficult to pursue collective goals and deliver effective representation to his constituents.

In his resignation letter, Onobun he cited a lack of cohesion, poor leadership direction, and unending factional struggles as key reasons for his exit.

The lawmaker noted that despite his efforts to foster unity and progress within the party, the worsening situation has made it impossible to continue under the PDP platform.

Political observers view Onobun’s resignation as a major blow to the PDP in Edo State, particularly as the 2024 off-cycle gubernatorial election looms. His departure adds to the growing list of defections the party has suffered in recent months.

Reliable sources within political circles suggest that Onobun is set to join the All Progressives Congress (APC), a move that could significantly realign the political structure in the state.

Like Atiku, Dele Momodu dumps PDP, reveals new Political party

A former presidential aspirant, Dele Momodu has officially resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

TheNewsGuru reports that the publisher of Ovation Magazine in a statement on Thursday stated  that the once-prominent opposition party is now “a carcass” and has been hijacked by anti-democratic interests.

Momodu, In his resignation letter to his Ward Chairman, blamed the PDP’s internal collapse as his reason for leaving.

“My reason is simple and straightforward. Our party has been unarguably hijacked by antidemocratic forces, from within and outside, in broad daylight,” Momodu stated, adding that it was honourable to abandon the carcass of the party and instead support a new political movement.

He wrote: “The majority of us earnestly sign up with the new coalition party known as the African Democratic Congress (ADC).”

Momodu concluded his letter with a note of appreciation to his ward leadership, stress that “I will forever treasure the kind support you gave me at all times.”

The former PDP chieftain’ resignation is coming hours after former Vice President Atiku Abubakar also dumped the opposition party.

Atiku communicated his decision to leave the main opposition party in a letter to the PDP Chairman Jada 1 ward, Jada LGA, Adamawa State.

His letter read: “I am writing to formally resign my membership from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) with immediate effect.

“I would like to take this opportunity to express my profound gratitude for the opportunities I have been given by the Party, Serving two full terms as Vice President of Nigeria and being a Presidential candidate twice has been one of the most significant chapters of my life. As a founding father of this esteemed Party, it is Indeed heartbreaking for me to make this decision.

“However, I find it necessary to part ways due to the current trajectory the Party has taken, which I believe diverges from the foundational principles we stood for. It is with a heavy heart that I resign, recognizing the irreconcilable differences that have emerged.

“I wish the Party and its leadership all the best in the future. Thank you once again for the opportunities and support.”

Atiku’s aide reveals resignation letter was leaked, replies Keyamo

Paul Ibe, Media Adviser to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, has revealed that the letter announcing his principal’s resignation from the Peoples Democratic Party was leaked.

Ibe stated this during an interview on Wednesday night on Arise News, while reacting to the controversy surrounding the timing of Atiku’s exit from the PDP, which coincided with the nation’s mourning of former President Muhammadu Buhari, who was buried on Tuesday.

Ibe claimed that individuals opposed to Atiku’s political ambition, including some members within the PDP and their allies in the All Progressives Congres orchestrated the leak and not voluntarily released.

“We’re here because people who never wished His Excellency Atiku Abubakar well leaked a communication of his. Yes, it was leaked,” Ibe stated.

He further criticised the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, for commenting on the matter, accusing him of abandoning pressing aviation challenges.

“It’s unfortunate that the Minister of Aviation, who rather should be concerned with serious issues of aviation matters and there are plenty of them, like runways and better infrastructure, jumped into this fray as though knowing what caused an accident even before investigation,” Ibe said.

He insisted that the leak resulted from “rogue elements in the PDP working in cahoots with APC members,” stressing that the matter should not overshadow national reflection over Buhari’s death.

“Those who claim to know why he resigned, are they clairvoyants? I would rather say we speak on something else and not this particular issue, considering the fact that the nation is still in mourning and the memories of the late President, Muhammadu Buhari, who was just interred yesterday, are still fresh,” he said.

Atiku formally resigned from the PDP via a letter dated July 14, 2025, submitted to his local ward chairman in Adamawa State and shared publicly by his media aide on X.

In the letter, he cited “irreconcilable differences” and noted his disappointment with the party’s current trajectory, which he believes has strayed from its founding principles.

  • Atiku’s PDP exit reflect ambition without principle – APC

Atiku’s PDP exit reflect ambition without principle – APC

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has reacted to Atiku Abubakar’s resignation from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Wednesday.

APC’s Lagos spokesman, Mr Seye Oladejo, in a Wednesday statement, said Atiku’s possible defection to the African Democratic Congress (ADC) changes nothing for the 2027 elections.

Abubakar, the PDP’s 2019 and 2023 presidential candidate, had shown growing frustration with the party’s post-election disarray and inability to provide effective opposition.

Though not formally a member of ADC, Atiku’s coalition recently adopted the party as its 2027 electoral platform.

His resignation signals readiness to solidify ties with ADC ahead of the upcoming general elections.

Reacting, Oladejo described Atiku’s exit from PDP as a desperate, yet unsurprising, move reflecting a fractured opposition.

He said the development confirms the PDP’s internal collapse and Atiku’s continued lack of political consistency.

“Atiku’s actions reflect ambition without principle, not driven by ideology but by relentless personal pursuit,” Oladejo stated.

He stressed that the defection will not boost ADC’s chances or dent APC’s dominance in Lagos or nationwide.

Oladejo added: “Whether PDP, ADC or another, Nigerians remain politically aware and will not be swayed.

“The APC stands as the only party delivering real governance, economic gains, and solid infrastructure.”

He said Atiku’s move allows voters to evaluate the integrity and consistency of those aspiring to lead.

Oladejo reaffirmed APC’s commitment to national unity, sustainable progress, and purposeful leadership.

He encouraged APC loyalists in Lagos to remain united and active at the grassroots for electoral success.

“Victory depends on our unity, past performance, and focus on people-centred development,” Oladejo said.

He added that political instability often trails Atiku, and Nigeria deserves more than recycled politics.

“Nigerians deserve visionary leadership, not theatrical comebacks. APC is prepared to lead and win,” Oladejo said.

NAN reports that opposition figures, including former PDP and Labour members, recently aligned with ADC ahead of 2027.

  • Atiku’s exit will not make any dent, you have freedom to leave PDP – Makinde

Atiku’s exit will not make any dent, you have freedom to leave PDP – Makinde

Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde says that the exit of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar will not have any setback for Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Atiku on Wednesday resigned his membership of PDP in Adamawa.

Makinde, who was the keynote Speaker at a Colloquium of the 10th Coronation Anniversary of Oba Aladetoyinbo Aladelusi, Deji of Akure, stated this in an interview with newsmen on Wednesday in Akure.

“ I don’t think that will make any dent on PDP as a party. PDP is an institution and you have freedom of entrance and exit,” he said.

The governor said that he did not see the African Democratic Congress (ADC)  as a threat to PDP but as a mere political party intended to contest in elections as PDP.

Earlier, Makinde described traditional institution as a heritage of the country, asking for government to give it due reverence for nation development.

The title of the lecture was: “The Role of Nigeria’s Traditional Institutions in Nation Building: Impediments, Impacts, and Prospects.”

He  said that traditional institutions are not relics of the past but enduring pillars of identity, legitimacy, and communal cohesion.

“Long before Nigeria’s formal administrative systems took root, traditional rulers dispensed justice, upheld values, coordinated local security, and kept communities united.

“Today, they remain custodians of grassroots trust. And nation-building that ignores them does so at its peril.

“No wonder politicians continue to seek their blessings and validation,” he said.

According to him,  strengthening traditional institutions is not simply about cultural preservation but it is strategic governance.

He stated that his government had made deliberate steps to integrate traditional institution into the governance architecture, which resulted into great success in Oyo State.

The governor stated that the  nation-building was not about how much oil the country  produced but about the  strength of  institutions, their ability to serve the people justly, and the legacy they leave behind.

Appreciating the governor, Oba Aladelusi said that traditional institution had pivotal role to play in nation building hence the need for the country’s constitution to strengthen it.

The traditional ruler, who said that Akure is one without any division, commended the state government,  sons and daughters of the town for their support to the Deji palace.
