    Delta communities sign peace pact on boundary crisis

    Feuding Aladja and Ogbe-Ijoh communities in Delta State have signed a pact to maintain peace and security.

    This is as the military comprising the Commanding Officer 3 Battalion of the Nigerian Army in Effurun waded into the lingering boundary crisis.

    The intervention of the military into the bloody boundary dispute had caused the leadership of the two communities and other stakeholders to hold a peace parley on Saturday, 17th September 2022, at the Government House Annex at Edjeba, in Warri metropolis.

    One person was confirmed shot dead on Friday morning as the inter-communal dispute over boundary demarcation between neighbouring Aladja and Ogbe-Ijoh communities of Udu and Warri South-West Local Government Areas took a dangerous twist.

    Community sources however claimed that two deaths were recorded in the early morning shooting spree which threw the entire residents of Ogbe-Ijoh into pandemonium.

    During the Saturday’s peace meeting, representatives of the two communities were reportedly given the opportunities to express their grievances, at the end of which it was made clear to them that there was the need to discard all animosities and agree to a truce which they obliged.

    Consequently, in the pact signed at the end of the meeting, copies of which were sighted by journalists, the leadership of the warring Aladja and Ogbe-Ijoh communities resolved that peace should be maintained henceforth by both communities.

    “Henceforth, the two communities will no longer attack each other over disputed land.

    “And that should any breach of peace occur, the persons found to be involved be dealt with squarely”, the agreement stated.

    The peace pact noted that even though the general security situation in Aladja and Ogbe-Ijoh communities remains relatively calm but unpredictable, “consequently, troops of Operation Delta Hawk will continue to dominate the area with patrols and show of force in conjunction with other security agencies to forestall any threats to the fragile peace”.

    Three representatives from the respective community who signed the peace pact were Chief C.C.I. Whiliky, Comrade Shell Okakota Godfirst and Chief Ottoogbiru Vetah for Aladja with Chief Anthony Jolomi, Hon. Denbota Oweikpodor and Chief Lucky Oromoni for Ogbeijor. It was also signed by the Divisional Police Officers in charge of the two communities, CSP Aliyy Shaba and SP KKabiru Audu respectively.

    The major decisions taken at the end of the meeting were “that the demarcation of the disputed boundary area between the two communities was to be suspended till further notice;

    “That the Governor or a delegation from Delta State Government was to visit the disputed boundary area before recommencement of the demarcation exercise;

    “That the leaders of the two feuding communities were to desist from threatening each other. Additionally, any leader or community member who was found culpable of breaching the truce was to be severely sanctioned in accordance with the law henceforth;

    “That all arms and ammunition still being harboured in any of the communities were to be voluntarily submitted to the security agencies.”

    In attendance at the meeting were representatives of the two feuding communities, the Chairman of Warri South West Local Government, representative of the Chairman Udu LGA, the Commissioner of Police, Delta State, Special Adviser to the State Governor on Peace and Conflict Resolution, the Police Area Commander Burutu, Divisional Police Officers of Ogbe-Ijoh and Onwie Police Stations as well as representatives of the Commanding Officer, 3 Battalion (Rear) Effurun.

    Edo Poll: Oba of Benin invites Obaseki, Ize-Iyamu for peace pact

    The Oba of Benin, who is worried of the violent dimension that campaigns are going, said he would invite all the governorship candidates participating in the coming governorship election in the state to his palace to sign a peace pact.

    This, he said especially between the two major political parties; the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the All Progressives Congress (APC).

    Oba Ewuare II said this while receiving, Chairman, Independent National Electoral Commission, (INEC), Prof. Mahmud Yakubu and his entourage in the palace.

    According to the monarch, the peace pact would enable them to talk to their followers to eschew violence before, during and after the September 19 governorship election.

    He advised that politicians must learn to emulate the immediate past President of Nigeria, Goodluck Jonathan who for the interest of peace and the unity of the country accepted the outcome of the presidential election which eventually saw Muhammadu Buhari as the nation’s president as at today.

    He maintained that the palace has always remained neutral in the state’s politics but has regards and concerns for the candidate who has respect for the traditional institution, create jobs for the people so that can put foods on their families’ tables and respect the masses.

    The monarch further said to douse the political tensions in the nation’s politics, a single term system should be encouraged noting that such will not only cut costs but also reduce the undue tensions that are associated with it.

    JUST IN: Atiku signs peace pact, tells Buhari to sign electoral bill

    The presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party and former Vice President, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar on Wednesday appeared before the National Peace Committee convened by Gen. Abdulsalami Abubakar (retd) and Catholic Bishop of Sokoto Diocese, Rev. Fr. Mathew Hassan Kukah, where he signed the peace accord for the 2019 general elections.

    Speaking shortly after signing the peace deal, Atiku commended President Muhammadu Buhari for accepting to sign the accord, but also advised him to sign the Electoral Act Amendment Bill 2018.

    I commend the President for accepting to sign the peace agreement. But let me also advise him to sign the Electoral Act Amendment Bill”, Atiku said at the event witnessed by many PDP stakeholders and supporters.

    Those at the event included, the PDP national chairman, Prince Uche Secondus; former governor of Ogun State, Otunba Gbenga Daniel; former presidential aspirant and former Minister of Special Duties, Alhaji Saminu Turaki (SAN).

    Recall that about 30 political parties protested against their exclusion from speaking during the NPC convened by Abubakar.

    According to them, granting only President Muhammadu Buhari the opportunity to speak during the signing of peace accord in Abuja was the height of injustice.

    The parties also protested the recognition of the national chairman of APC, Adams Oshiomhole at the event, saying the special treatment accorded them was discriminatory.

    The leader of the protesting political parties and chairman of Change Nigeria Party, Usman Ikeleji, said the committee demonstrated what he called “partiality” when it failed to also grant the chairman of Inter-party Advisory Council, Peter Ameh, the opportunity to give a speech at the event.

    Why was only the presidential candidate of the APC (Buhari) allowed to speak at this occasion? Is Buhari the only presidential candidate here? Nigeria belongs to all of us.

    Why should Oshiomhole be singled out at the event when we have equal status as chairmen of political parties? We came here and can’t be allowed to speak? Who owns Nigeria? It is our county. You can’t just bring us here and ask us to sign a document we don’t even know the content. These men are deceiving us.

    Nobody was allowed to talk not even the Chairman of Inter-party Advisory Council. We are talking about peace here and they won’t allow us to speak? Are we children?”

    But in his response, Abubakar begged the aggrieved politicians for calm just as he accepted responsibility for the oversight.

    Please, please, I take responsibility for all that you pointed out here, I apologise”, he pleaded.

    After the apology from General Abdulsalami, Ikeleji looked at his colleagues and said, “This is a man who brought democracy to this country but he is apologising to all of us here. There is nothing we can do again.”
