  • LASG breaks silence over Peller’s 30m tax demand allegations

LASG breaks silence over Peller’s 30m tax demand allegations

The Lagos State Government has restated that the Lagos State Internal Revenue Service (LIRS) exercises fair judgment in matters of taxation.

This clarification was given by the Special Adviser to the Governor on Tax and Revenue, Abdulkabir Ogungbo, in response to the outcry of TikTok influencer, Habeeb Hamzat, popularly known as Peller.

It would be recalled that the 20-year-old content creator and streamer, had recently taken to social media to complain about what he described as an “excessive” tax demand from the state government.

In a viral clip from his livestream with singer Tobechukwu Okoh, popularly known as Peruzzi, the influencer alleged that he received an income tax bill of ₦36 million from LIRS.

“The task force said I should pay N36m in tax. I swear to Almighty Allah, I don’t have anything. I only came into the limelight last year. Are you, Peruzzi, even paying tax, and how much is it? Why should I pay N36m? What does that even mean? Why will the government take money from me when it has never given me anything, not even TikTok support, let alone help from a task force member?” Peller lamented.

Speaking in a recent interview, Ogungbo said he would look at the context of Peller’s issue later on and revert, but noted that anyone earning legitimately within the state must pay tax.

“I need to take a look at this particular context in question. But generally, the LIRS is an autonomous body saddled with the responsibility of assessing and giving the best judgment on behalf of the government. We may need to engage the LIRS as an office to know about this particular case. But within the context of personal income, anybody who is legitimately earning, Section 24 of the Nigerian Constitution stipulates that when you earn your living and income legitimately, you are meant to declare that honestly to the authorities. So the context around the size, the quantum and what have you, needs to be properly investigated and we can revert,” the SA said.

When quizzed on taxation for content creators, the SA explained that there are new reforms guiding digital assets and virtual transactions.

Ogungbo said, “Naturally, the law allows for personal income tax, meaning that when you earn a living or earn anything from what you do legitimately, you are supposed to pay tax. So from that context, irrespective of the location, either virtually or physically, you’re meant to remit your tax to the approved authority, which is the LIRS. But from the context of around digital assets and their complementary vocations, which mainly talk about this virtual transaction, the new reforms take care of that. But as it relates to personal income tax, irrespective, you’re meant to pay tax.”

He added, “So it’s about the legitimacy of your residence, where you stay. When you stay here, we assume that your infrastructure usage and otherwise, you earn it. You can be here and be having online business, so for that reason, if you earn honestly here, and there is no proof that you pay the same tax to another jurisdiction, for instance, maybe you’re based outside the country, you have to prove to the authority here that you were paying to the other state or other national. But if your income, which you earn here virtually or online and you stay here, and you want to do something with the Lagos State Government, then you’re bound to remit your tax here.

“But I do not have this particular case on my table for me to determine. Because we have a body (the LIRS) that is autonomous and that is very efficient in what they do. So Let me investigate and revert to you.”

Peller, the popular TikTok content creator has raised alarm over what he described as excessive taxes allegedly imposed on him by the Lagos State Government.

Peller made the disclosure during a recent livestream where he was joined by Nigerian singer, Peruzzi. He claimed that officials of the Lagos State Internal Revenue Service (LIRS) had issued him a demand notice to pay ₦36 million as income tax.

According to him, the tax bill came as a shock because he only became popular on social media in 2024.

Taskforce said I should pay ₦36 million for tax. I don’t have anything. I just came into the limelight last year,” he lamented during the live broadcast.

Reacting to his complaint, Peruzzi questioned why the TikTok star had not yet settled his tax obligations, noting that payment of tax is a legal duty for all Nigerians.

Why haven’t you paid your taxes? Do you know you’re supposed to pay tax as a Nigerian? Do you know how much I pay as tax? I won’t mention it here, but it’s more than the tax bill they gave you,” Peruzzi told him.

The singer further advised Peller to resolve the matter with the authorities quickly in order to avoid possible legal action, including imprisonment.

However, Peller maintained that the amount being demanded was too high. He alleged that the government had never supported him financially or otherwise during his TikTok career, yet was now asking for millions in tax.

He also suggested that the large tax bill may be linked to his public display of assets and the disclosure of his earnings from TikTok.

Peruzzi, in response, encouraged him to reach out to the authorities and request additional time to enable him to raise the money. But Peller insisted that his income comes from his online activities and is not generated from within Nigeria.

Peller admitted he didn’t know the man was homeless at the time of hiring.

Speaking on why he initially insisted on hiring someone with a master’s degree, Peller said: “There are places I go like the U.S.and I need someone to travel with me. There are things I don’t know, and having a graduate with me means they can assist in areas where I lack knowledge.”

He also confirmed that he had already hired another applicant and paid them ₦500,000 in advance before their official resumption.
