FA Cup: Blame me for Mane penalty miss – Klopp

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp admits his advice almost blew their FA Cup final shootout victory over Chelsea.

Both Mo Salah and Virgil van Dijk went off injured during the goalless 120 minutes before Kostas Tsimikas struck the winning penalty though Liverpool are confident both will be fit to face Real Madrid in the Champions League final at the end of the month.

Klopp, who has become the first manager in Liverpool’s history to win the European Cup, League Championship, FA Cup and League Cup, admitted his blunder had almost cost his team.

When Sadio Mane stepped up with Liverpool’s first chance to win the shootout, Klopp urged him to change his usual finish against Senegal international team-mate Edouard Mendy – and Mane’s effort was saved.

“Sadio’s penalty is 50 per cent my responsibility. I told him the goalie knows exactly what you normally do so do it the other way round. How often in my life is it better to shut up!

“But we still made it after an incredible game. We work with a neuroscience company (neruo11) who said they could really train penalty shooting. This trophy is for them as well.”

Bundesliga: Bayer Leverkusen held as penalty kick disallowed

Third-placed Bayer Leverkusen were held to a 0-0 Bundesliga draw at Bochum on Sunday with Moussa Diaby having a goal from the penalty kick spot ruled out.

The goal was disallowed because he slipped and touched the ball twice.

The bizarre occurrence, with the ball looping up into the goal but not counting, was a rare highlight in a lacklustre game.

But the point does little to harm Bayer Leverkusen’s chances of finishing in the 2022/2023 UEFA Champions League places with five games to go.

Sunday’s later Bundesliga action also focuses on the race for the top four.

RB Leipzig in fourth host sixth-placed Hoffenheim and fifth-placed Freiburg are at Eintracht Frankfurt.

Bayern Munich beat Augsburg 1-0 on Saturday to edge closer to their 10th straight Bundesliga title.

Late Jorginho penalty seals Chelsea dramatic win

Jorginho’s stoppage-time penalty ensured Chelsea avoided conceding further ground in the Premier League title race with a dramatic victory over Leeds United at Stamford Bridge.

Teenager Joe Gelhardt, brought on as an 81st-minute substitute, appeared to have earned a late point for Leeds with his first touch – the 19-year-old sliding in to send Tyler Roberts’ low cross past Edouard Mendy.

In a hugely entertaining encounter featuring three converted penalties, Raphinha put the visitors ahead with the game’s first spot-kick after 28 minutes following Marcos Alonso’s mistimed challenge on Daniel James.

But Chelsea, knocked off top spot in the table following their 3-2 defeat by West Ham last weekend, fought back as Mason Mount met Alonso’s low cross with a first-time finish to restore parity before the interval.

Chelsea were awarded a penalty of their own before the hour mark after referee Chris Kavanagh reviewed Raphinha’s sliding challenge on Antonio Rudiger, allowing Jorginho to complete the turnaround.

Despite Gelhardt’s heroics, it was Jorginho who had the final say with another confident penalty after Mateusz Klich brought down Rudiger to deliver a victory that ensures third-placed Chelsea remain two points behind leaders Manchester City.

Champions City beat Wolves 1-0 earlier on Saturday, while Liverpool, in second, defeated Aston Villa by the same scoreline.

  • EPL introduces new VAR laws ahead of 2021/2022 season

EPL introduces new VAR laws ahead of 2021/2022 season

Premier League referees’ chief, Mike Riley, has confirmed that officials will cut down on soft penalties next season.

New changes to (Video Assistant Referee) VAR offside could prevent 20 goals from being disallowed.

Riley has held discussions with clubs, players, managers and the Football Supporters’ Association over the past few months to iron out on how matches should be refereed both on the pitch and in the VAR room.

Premier League effects new changes to VAR ahead of 2021/2022 season

A record 125 penalties (of which 29 came through VAR) were awarded last season, compared to 92 in 2019/2020 and 103 in 2018/2019.

Many of these came from decisions where there was minimal contact between defender and attacker. Referees must now “consider the consequence and the motivation of the player.”

Riley said: “Fundamentally we want the approach to be one that best allows the players to go out and express themselves, allows the Premier League games to flow and means the refereeing team, both as referee and as VAR, don’t intervene for trivial offences.

“Let’s create a free-flowing game, where the threshold is slightly higher than it was last season.”

At least 32 goals were ruled out for offside via VAR decisions last season. Riley admits 20 of the overall total would have stood using the new process for 2021/2022, which will copy that seen at Euro 2020.

“On marginal offside, we’ve now effectively re-introduced the benefit of the doubt to the attacking player,” Riley said.

  • I can’t describe how disappointed I was with England penalty – Saka

I can’t describe how disappointed I was with England penalty – Saka

Arsenal attacker Bukayo Saka has broken his silence since his penalty shootout final in the final of Euro 2020.

Saka saw his penalty saved by Gigio Donnarumma – which crowned Italy as Euro 2020 winners on Sunday.

In a statement posted online, Saka declared: “There are no words to tell you how disappointed I was with the result and my penalty.

“I really believed we would win this for you. I’m sorry that we couldn’t bring it home for you this year, but I promise we will give everything we’ve got to make sure this generation knows how it feels to win.

“My reaction post match said it all, I was hurting so much and I felt like I’d let you all and my England family down, but I can promise you this… I will not let that moment or the negativity that I’ve received that week break me.”

Saka also wrote: “I knew instantly the type of hate that I was about to receive, that is a sad reality.

“There is no place for racism or hate of any kind in football or in any area of society and to the majority of people coming together to call out the people sending these messages, by taking action and reporting these comments to the police and by driving out the hate by being kind to one another, we will win.”

  • Raheem Sterling penalty was scandalous – Liverpool legend

Raheem Sterling penalty was scandalous – Liverpool legend

Liverpool legend Dietmar Hamann has slammed Manchester City attacker Raheem Sterling for a “blatant dive” to win a penalty for England.

The Three Lions made history on Wednesday night, with an own goal from Simon Kjaer and Harry Kane’s rebounded spot kick earning them a place in the Euro 2020 final.

Kane’s goal came after Sterling was awarded a penalty thanks to a foul from Joakim Maehle.

“I think it’s scandalous,” Hamann told RTE. “Obviously they saw the game out well after going ahead, but they won with a penalty which was a blatant dive.

“This is not in the spirit of the game.

“England always prides itself on being the home of fair play and no diving. We all remember what happened with [Jurgen] Klinsmann when he came to England and he dived, and then they had the celebration with the diving.

“Sterling probably thought the challenge was going to come, so I’ll give him the benefit of the doubt. But Maehle pulls out of the tackle because he sees he can’t get there. There is no contact whatsoever.

“VAR was brought in to rectify these decisions and change blatant mistakes by the referee. This is as blatant a mistake as you will see, and this is a European Championship semi-final. I feel sorry for the Danes.”

Euro 2020: Ref must explain England penalty – Denmark midfielder

Tottenham midfielder Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg was left frustrated with the manner of Denmark’s Euro 2020 semifinal defeat to England.

The Danes lost 2-1 thanks to a controversial penalty in extra-time.

Hojbjerg later said: “What is there to say after this round? Not much has been said. There has been a bit of a look at the penalty kick that might have been.

“When I stood next to him (Raheem Sterling), I did not think there is a penalty kick, because I thought the ball was pushed, and then he fell before there was contact.

“But it all happened quickly, so I may be wrong now. It annoys me that many say that it may not have been there and that VAR is not taking over.

“I can not comment on something I have not seen, but I hope the ref does the right thing. That’s why we have him and VAR.

“From now on, maybe you should let the ref go in front of a microphone or a camera so they can speak. If there is no VAR on, errors can occur, but when there is a VAR, they must be allowed to stand here afterwards.

“How do they feel? What were they thinking? What was their view on it all? It is easy as a player to have to answer one thing and another and not have to comment, but sometimes you would like to hear from the referee himself what he thought.

“I’m not angry, but it puts things in perspective a bit. I generally think that the level of refereeing has been really nice and really high, so that way I do not complain.”

  • Euro 2020: 2 penalties saved as Ukraine defeat North Macedonia

Euro 2020: 2 penalties saved as Ukraine defeat North Macedonia

Ukraine bounced back from their opening defeat at Euro 2020 as they held on to beat tournament debutants North Macedonia in an entertaining encounter in Bucharest.

Having fought back from two goals down before ultimately losing 3-2 to the Netherlands on Sunday, Andriy Shevchenko’s side ended a run of six successive European Championship defeats to remain in contention in Group C.

Captain Andriy Yarmolenko capitalised on poor defending from a corner after 28 minutes, before the West Ham forward’s pass set up Roman Yaremchuk, who slotted neatly into the bottom corner five minutes later.

Leeds United’s Ezgjan Alioski followed up his own saved penalty to hand a much-improved North Macedonia a second-half lifeline, but they could not find an equaliser despite goalkeeper Stole Dimitrievski saving Ruslan Malinovskiy’s penalty in the closing stages.

Georgi Bushchan was strong in the final stages between the posts for Ukraine as they held on for the three points. The result leaves North Macedonia on the brink of elimination.

Ukraine meet Austria and North Macedonia face the Netherlands in the final round of Group C games, with both matches taking place on Monday at 17:00.

  • Rashford penalty kick seals win after England booed for taking knee

Rashford penalty kick seals win after England booed for taking knee

England beat Romania 1-0 thanks to a Marcus Rashford penalty kick in their final pre-Euro 2020 warm-up match on Sunday.

But the game was once again marred by supporters booing the Three Lions for taking the knee.

Fans had jeered England players for showing support for the Black Lives Matter movement at the start of the 1-0 win over Austria earlier in the week.

But, with Gareth Southgate clearly explaining on Saturday that his team’s gesture was motivated by racial injustice rather than politics, boos were still clearly audible once more at the Riverside Stadium.

Potentially deflated by those fans’ blatant disregard for the team’s feelings, perhaps England’s rather subdued start in Middlesbrough had a straightforward explanation.

Southgate’s side did not pose much of a threat until Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Jadon Sancho hit the crossbar after the half-hour mark.

The visitors looked as much of an attacking threat as England, but good work from Jack Grealish earned a penalty kick with 22 minutes to go.

Rashford – captain for the day – converted with aplomb, with Jordan Henderson unable to follow suit from the penalty kick spot a little later.

Romania looked much sharper than England initially, with Denis Alibec shooting just wide of the top-right corner and Razvan Marin firing at Sam Johnstone following a flowing move.

Florin Nita in the visitors’ net had very little to do before having the bar come to his rescue in the 32nd minute.

It kept out a ferocious Calvert-Lewin header, and then again six minutes later as Sancho’s bending effort following a clever offload by Grealish had left the goalkeeper looking helpless.

But Romania still posed a threat at the other end, with Deian Sorescu testing Johnstone after being released in behind the suspect Tyrone Mings.

An encouraging aspect was the performance of Rashford, who after a difficult spell at club level, did well in the 62nd minute as he collected Calvert-Lewin’s lay-off.

He burst into the Romania half before shooting wide on the stretch after a lung-busting run.

Rashford was decisive soon after, however, coolly slotting in a penalty kick after Grealish —- who was fouled on five occasions more than anyone else —- found himself tripped by Tiberiu Capusa.

Henderson, introduced at half-time for his first outing since February, passed up the chance to make it 2-0 from the penalty kick spot as Nita saved his kick.

This had followed a foul on Calvert-Lewin by Vlad Chiriches.

That came hot on the heels of Johnstone producing a wonderful stop to thwart Andrei Ivan, with England ultimately settling for the 1-0 win.

England now turn their attention to the Euros, with their campaign beginning against Croatia at Wembley on June 13.

Man Utd forward reveals his penalty practice partner

Manchester United forward Marcus Rashford has made Dean Henderson his main penalty practice partner at Old Trafford.

Rashford is ready when required, having shown himself to be more than capable in the past, and believes working with those that know him best is helping to hone his skills.

The England international has told United’s official website of penalty sessions with Henderson and Joel Pereira, who is currently out on loan at Huddersfield: “We do practice against each other.

“I always like to practise against Dean and Joel because, probably out of all the keepers, they know me best and my finishing drills and stuff like that.

“If I can score against them I know I can score against anyone, so I have to test myself against these guys.”
