2023: Purchasing of PVCs to rig elections is a futile exercise – INEC

Ahead of the 2023 general elections in the country, the Independent National Electoral Commission, (INEC), has said that politicians or anyone purchasing  Permanent Voters Cards (PVCs) to manipulate the elections are engaging in a wasteful exercise.

This was made known yesterday by the INEC’s National Commissioner and Chairman of Information and Voter Education Committee, Festus Okoye, while featuring on a political programme  Sunday Politics on Channels TV yesterday.

Recall that the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project, SERAP, had alleged that politicians are buying PVCs from poor voters to manipulate the forthcoming general elections in the country.

Okoye said the Bimodal Voter Registration System (BVAS) will reject biometric data of persons who are not original owners of the traded PVCs.

He described the plan by some desperate politicians who are already harvesting PVCs to rig the next election as an impossibility.

“Anybody who is purchasing a permanent voter card is just engaging in an exercise in futility. The only thing any person can do is to make sure the voter does not vote on election day but for you to come to the polling unit on election day with voter’s card belonging to someone else, and you attempt to vote with it, that is an impossibility, the BVAS will not capture your fingerprint,” Okoye said.

Recently, a video went viral of a man who kept many PVCs in a hole in a community in Ogun State.

Less than 48 hours to the INEC registration deadline, hooligans on Friday disrupted the ongoing Continuous Voter Registration, CVR, exercise at St. Bridget Catholic Church in Ijesha, Surulere area of Lagos State.

The thugs stole the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, and Continuous Voter Registration machines and took to their heels.

The incident happened in the presence of some persons trying to register to beat the July 31st deadline set by INEC.

As a result of the incident, the parish priest had to lock up the church as people scampered for safety.

An eyewitness who identified herself as Dr. Ambassador Princess Okojie Igbemudia said the thugs stormed the church and disrupted the exercise because they thought that those registering will vote for the Labour party.

It was learned that the police had been deployed to the area to ensure peace and order.

INEC has said that there will be no going back on the July 31st registration deadline.

INEC speaks on PVC related issues, July 31st registration deadline

Two officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) who simply gave their names as Buba and Temi have enlightened the public on the procedures to follow before registering or transferring their Permanent Voters Card.

The duo who spoke on a political program on Nigeria info FM in Lagos on Wednesday and monitored by TheNewsGuru.com advised the public on the steps to be taken to procure their PVCs before the July 31st deadline, hinting that there will be no extension.

On the loss of a PVC, Buba stated that anyone who loses his/her PVC should go on the INEC portal to register and state missing or damaged PVC.

On change of name, Temi directed persons with a name change to go to INEC offices with a Newspaper publication or court affidavit to that effect.

On the deadline for voter registration, Buba stated that INEC needs time to put itself in order and prepare adequately for next year’s general election.

For those who still possess a temporary voters card and find it difficult to access it on the portal or trace it, Tomi advised such persons to register again for a new one.

Asked about the expiration of PVCs by callers on the program, Temi said the card should be kept safe as it doesn’t have an expiry date.

For those who cannot access the portal from their phone, Temi advised users to use google chrome to access it.

He advised the public to keep their PVCs safe, saying that a faded one cannot be accessed by Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS)  technology presently used by the electoral body for elections.

He appealed to Nigerians needing to fix issues relating to PVC to visit the INEC website; CVR.inecnigeria.org

Buba asked Nigerians living in Lagos to communicate with the body using the various social media handles; Interlagos on Twitter and Instagram and ineclagoshq on Facebook, saying that the feedback mechanism is very instantaneous.

Before now, a faction of the party had elected a presidential candidate for the elections next year.

But the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) maintained that it only recognises the party’s presidential election which produced Obi as its candidate.

    PVC

“The leadership of the NLC and TUC recognize the leadership of the Labour Party led by Barr. Julius Abure, a former trade union leader and workers are part of the leadership,” the NLC President Ayuba Wabba said in a statement issued on Thursday.

“The NLC and TUC are aware of only one presidential primary which was held in Asaba, Delta State on 30th May 2022 and produced HE Peter Obi as its presidential candidate and standard-bearer.”

    PVC

He said the Trade Union Congress (TUC) and NLC gave their full support to the processes which produced Obi as the party’s presidential candidate.

“This, therefore, serves as a public disclaimer on Mr Calistus Okafor. We warn the general public to steer clear of Calistus Okafor and characters who might want to cash in on the popularity of the Labour Party to hoodwink, extort and swindle unsuspecting members of the public,” he warned.
