Heavy knocks as Yemi Solade claims seniority over Pete Edochie in Nollywood

Nollywood actor, Yemi Solade has come under heavy criticism after opining that he began his acting career before Nollywood icon Pete Edochie.

TheNewsGuru reports that thespian made the remarks behind the scenes of The Father’s Path with Temitope podcast, where he addressed what he described as misinformation about the origins of Nigeria’s booming film industry.

“The first man that shot home video in this country, his name is Ade Ajiboye (Big Abass); he’s alive,” the actor said.

The actor further explained that the concept of recording performances for home viewing began as an experiment in the Yoruba theatre scene. “We have been doing it… there was celluloid, we did that,” he said.

Solade went on to list the names of early pioneers of Yoruba cinema including Hubert Ogunde, Baba Sala, Ade Love and Ola Balogun.

“Some of them have gone,” he added.

He stressed that due to proper documentation, many Yoruba filmmakers don’t often get the credit they deserve. “It all started like that… my people in the Yoruba setting didn’t document anything,” he said.

“That’s why some people in the film industry will come out to boast saying they started.”

“They didn’t start anything. Living in Bondage was not the first movie. But because they romanced the media while my people were doing the act. Agreed, most of them weren’t schooled and they didn’t have access to media,” he added.

Speaking about his own career, the actor said, “I started acting before Pete Edochie, but he’s older than me. I was 17 in 1977 when I represented Nigeria at Festac 77 as the youngest actor. I’ve done 48 years and I’m still standing.”

Yemi Solade’s remark have attracted alot of backlash as many accused him of being disrespectful to Pete Edochie.

Reacting one user wrote, “Pete Edochie was already a superstar when many of us were kids. Whether it was radio, stage or TV, he made an impact. This statement by Yemi Solade is unnecessary.”

Another user added, “This is not how you compare legacies. Even if you came before him, the impact is what matters. Pete Edochie is a legend.”

Another user on X commented: “Things Fall Apart was in 1971, how did he start acting before Pete Edochie tho.”

Another offered a more balanced view: “Everybody grace different. You can carry yourself up without talking someone down… Most important thing is both men… are recognised in the industry.”

Igbo men are not good politicians – Pete Edochie says

Pete Edochie, the veteran Nollywood actor, Pete Edochie, has opined that Igbo men are not good politicians.

TheNewsGuru reports that the thespian during a recent interview with Afia TV disclosed that Igbos  do not condone treachery for the second time, adding that others who are used to politics or the treachery can overlook a lot of things, but not the igbos.

He stressed that such behaviour towards politics has led many Igbo politicians to sever ties with their strategic political allies.

He said, “An Igbo man is not a good politician. And I will tell you why, people who are used to politics or the treachery that characterised politics, can overlook a lot of things. But the Igbo man is not constituted to condole treachery a second time. If you hurt the Igbo man once in politics, he will never give you an opportunity to hurt him again. He will recoil himself. That’s the average Igbo man.

“The Igbo man is really not constituted to sustain political treachery. The moment you exhibit treachery in your involvement with an Igbo man, they cut you off. That’s it.”

  • How I want to be remembered after bowing out of acting – Pete Edochie

How I want to be remembered after bowing out of acting – Pete Edochie

Veteran Nollywood actor Pete Edochie, has revealed how best he wants to be remembered after finally bowing out of the scene.

Edochie in an exclusive interview with The Sun Nigeria said he would love to be remembered as a man who did his best to entertain people while they lived.

“I want to be remembered as a man who did his best to entertain people while they lived. That’s right.

“Whenever I am in a production, I want people to learn or pick something from that production. It gives me joy when I go out and people look at me and embrace me, and then say: ‘this man speaks good English’.

“I like it because it compliments me. It doesn’t distract from my professional image in anyway. It makes me happy. People look at me and say ‘we like what you are doing’. Good! I feel happy that way.”

Speaking on the unity of Yoruba and Igbo in some parts of the country, he said, “the way Yoruba and Igbo have caught along as brothers and sisters for a very long time, but most young people today don’t seem to appreciate that.

“In 1966, we had the first coup in Nigeria; Ironsi emerged as the Head of State. At a time when he was visiting the west, Colonel Adekunle Fajuyi was the governor. The people who organized a reprisal coup then went there to kill Ironsi and Fajuyi said ‘you will not kill this man while he is my guest’.

“And they told him ‘if you don’t give us this man to kill, we will kill the two of you’. Fajuyi said they should go ahead. So, you see, a Yoruba man sacrificing his life for an Igbo person. The best friend that Dr. Nnamdi Azikwe had in politics was Adeniran Ogunsanya, a Yoruba man.

“They were that close to the extent that when Adeniran Ogunsanya died, all the Igbos in Lagos closed their shops and came to the street to mourn him. During the war, there were some people in Yorubaland who collected rent for some Igbo in their absence. When the war ended, the Igbo were each given 20 pounds. Some of them went back to Lagos and the Yoruba came out and said ‘this is the rent we collected in your absence’. One of the beneficiaries was Alex Ekwueme who later became the Vice President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. So, I believe that we should try to develop some fondness for each other.

“My son is married to a Yoruba woman and she has never complained that she came to the wrong place, and my son has never complained. It is like that to so many families. I think there should be better understanding between Ndi Igbo and Yoruba; if not for our own benefit, it’s for the benefit of the whole country.”

I studied Theatre Arts and I took my time to read this so I didn’t just get in. I have a passion for acting and I have a passion for directing but I don’t have a passion for producing.

“So, if I want to do my own films like right now I am planning on doing my own films, I am going to get a producer who is very good with that. Pay the producer to run everything but he’s going to be professional. So, I won’t say because it’s my film let me do everything, then I will mess it up.”

Yul also spoke on growing up with Nollywood icon, Pete Edochie, as his father.

His words: “It feels good. Growing up was really good with him as a father. He is extremely strict, but I thank God that He gave me a father like that. I couldn’t have wished for a better father. He is a strict catholic, so a lot of things I know today I learnt because of my background. Like I told you, I would rather die than dope. Kill me but I won’t dope and that’s how my father is.

“My father made us to understand that it is better to have a good name. Good name will get you riches and everything you need. That’s the kind of family I was raised in, and my mum too is very strict. There wasn’t much money then to throw around but we grew up loving God and each other.”
