Rivers Palaver: Combatants should consider plight of the poor-Obi appeals

The 2023 Presidential Candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, has weighed into the raging power tussle in Rivers State and wants the warring leaders to think about the poor in the state.

In a long tweet on Tuesday on the crisis, Obi noted that the situation in Rivers is an example of how not to use democracy to serve the people

“It is unfortunate that 60 years after independence and nearly 30 years of our celebrated unbroken civil rule, our democracy is still marred by undemocratic practices and values.

“A significant percentage of our elections are deeply flawed—manipulated to serve the interests of a select few rather than reflecting the true will of the people.

“Governance at most levels does not reflect the genuine values and aspirations of the people because the welfare of the citizens is often neglected in practice.

“Looking at the ongoing crisis in Rivers State, we see yet another glaring example of how our democracy and governance are not serving its purpose, the welfare of the people of River State. The disagreement is not about improving the measurable indices of development: education, healthcare, or lifting people out of poverty but rather for reasons that do not in any way benefit the people of Rivers State and Nigeria in general.

“I fully understand the impact of what is happening in Rivers State. The real losers are the people—their welfare and the future of the society their children will live in.

“My respectful appeal to all those involved is to reconsider their positions and reflect on the grace God has bestowed upon them as leaders. They must think about the suffering people of Rivers State and work towards a better future for their children.

“My commitment remains to continuously remember them in earnest prayers and to advocate for their well-being. I also appeal to well-meaning Nigerians and the Federal Government, in the spirit of true democracy and good governance, to use their offices to restore normalcy and bring an end to this crisis.
    A new Nigeria is POssible!

  • Silencing dissent, undemocratic – Peter Obi condemns intimidation of corper who called Tinubu ‘terrible’ president

Silencing dissent, undemocratic – Peter Obi condemns intimidation of corper who called Tinubu ‘terrible’ president

The presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), in the 2023 general elections, Peter Obi, has condemned the intimidation and harassment of a National Youth Corps member, Ushie Rita Uguamaye, who criticized President Bola Tinubu.

TheNewsGuru recalls Uguamaye, in a viral video, had lamented the hardship faced by citizens as a result of the economic policies of the current administration and described Tinubu as a “terrible president.”

Rita who broke down in tears, shared her frustration over the high cost of goods in the market, further calling President Tinubu’s government a “terrible” one for paying little attention to the hike in commodity prices.

“We should start calling out the government. For example, Tinubu, you are a terrible person. What are you doing to help our economy?

“If a lot of Nigerians come out and start speaking about what we are going through, maybe changes will be made in the government,” she said in the video.

In another video, the female corps member alleged that Lagos National Youth Service (NYSC) management threatened her for the video she made condemning hardship in the country.

Reacting, the presidential candidate via his social media account on Sunday night noted that the action so far taken by the government against the lady resembles the intimidation, harassment, and name-calling he also suffers from the same government.

He said such actions against those who dare to speak the truth to power are unacceptable, undemocratic and worrying as the government should not silence the citizens.

“The National Youth Corps member, Ushie Rita Uguamaye, also known as Raye, recently had an experience that highlights a troubling trend in our nation—one where voices of reason and truth are met with intimidation rather than dialogue and engagement.

“Reports indicate that she has faced threats from NYSC officials simply for expressing her concerns about the current administration.

“This pattern is not isolated. I, too, have been subjected to threats for daring to offer constructive suggestions and comments.

“I now face daily intimidation, harassment, and name-calling simply for expressing solution-based views on government policies.

“Such actions are antithetical to the principles of democracy. A government that silences its citizens is not democratic or one that is subject to accountability and good governance and is most often corrupt,” he said.

Peter Obi gives valid reasons why he visited Bala Mohammed

Peter Obi, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), has explained why he visited Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed.

In a statement on his official handle on Friday, Obi explained that the visit was part of his commitment to the “New Nigeria” project.

He emphasized that their discussions focused on national issues, governance, and the economic challenges facing Nigerians, especially in the North.

Obi highlighted the need for competent and inclusive leadership that transcends political, religious, and ethnic divisions. He stressed the importance of prudent resource management and policies that prioritize citizens’ welfare.

The former Anambra governor reiterated his dedication to good governance, transparency, and accountability, particularly in critical sectors like education, healthcare, and poverty alleviation. “A New Nigeria is becoming very POssible!” Obi concluded.

  • I’m ready to work with Peter Obi – Bala Mohammed

I’m ready to work with Peter Obi – Bala Mohammed

Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed has said that he was ready to work with Mr Peter Obi in order to provide good governance to Nigerians.

Mohammed stated this in Bauchi on Thursday when Obi, the Presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in the 2023 general elections, paid him a ‘consultation visit’ at the state’s Presidential Lodge.

According to him, the visit which also centred on how himself and Mr Obi can work closely together to address poverty and criminality, would transcend political, religious or tribal lines.

“We discussed state by state challenges and I feel highly appreciative of what he is doing as the leader of the opposition because whether we like it or not, he is the leader of the opposition now in Nigeria.

“I want to say at this level not to make some of those doubting Thomases and mischievous minds to pre-empt what we are doing, that I’m ready to work with Peter Obi.

“We will make sure we come together, close ranks, bring good governance to the country, give vibrant opposition with knowledge, timelines, visions in such a manner that we will rescue and recover our country.

“Our coming together is a message and the message is going to resonate because all our colleagues, the PDP governors are behind this kind of journey because it is a transcendental one.

“We are coming together to work together irrespective of party, region, religion or any other thing,” said Mohammed.

In his remarks, Obi said he decided to visit Gov Mohammed to discuss Nigeria’s issues and consult him, being the Chairman of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) Governors’ forum and a critical stakeholder in Nigeria’s politics today.

“It’s just a consultation and discussion meeting that will continue to go on as we talk about the future of this country.

“We have to discuss issues happening in the North. I have told the governor today that the North is a critical component if we are going to get it right in this country.

“There is poverty in Nigeria. We have to deal with the issue of poverty and until you solve poverty, then you can talk about criminality,” he said.

Obi added that the country needed to invest hugely in critical areas to put people out of poverty so as to reduce criminality in the society.

Mr Peter Obi was in a closed door meeting with Gov Mohammed for more than three hours before addressing the press.

Everything tripled, Tinubu has done exactly as he promised – Peter Obi

The presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in the 2023 general elections, Peter Obi, has faulted President Bola Tinubu over his current economic policies.

TheNewsGuru reports that Peter Obi, during a recent visit to Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed on Thursday, sarcastically praised Tinubu for fulfilling his promise to continue where former President, Muhammadu Buhari, stopped.

According to the former Anambra governor,  Nigeria must now move beyond ethnic and religious politics to focus on competence and capacity.

Obi also stressed the need to revive Nigeria’s industries, invest in education and healthcare, and steer the nation towards productive governance.

He said, “Tinubu promised to continue where Buhari stopped. If you look at it, Buhari left the dollar at about N400, today it is about N1,500. Rice was about N40,000, it is now over N100,000. Fuel was about N300, it is now over N1,000. I can go on and on—everything has doubled and tripled. So, he has done exactly as he promised.

“In Indonesia, a president was sworn in about the same time as another one in Nigeria. Ten years later, Indonesia moved their GDP from $800 billion to $1.3 trillion, and their per capita income from $3,000 to $5,000.

“Here in Nigeria, our GDP fell from $500 billion to $200 billion, and per capita income dropped from $3,500 to below $2,000—that is the difference.”

Ex-Gov El-Rufai’s son reveals Peter Obi may join SDP after dad’s defection from APC

Bashir El-Rufai, son of ex-Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, has suggested that Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, might join the Social Democratic Party (SDP), following his father’s defection from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Bashir dropped the hint while responding to a post on X (formerly Twitter) by a user, @Freedom42602077, who argued that the SDP would struggle to defeat the APC in the 2027 elections unless it aligns with Peter Obi.

“Bro to bro, if Peter Obi is not in that party, they can’t win presidential. APC will have it again!” the user wrote.

Reacting, Bashir El-Rufai simply replied: “He is coming.”

    He is coming

    — Bashir El-Rufai (@BashirElRufai) March 10, 2025

The cryptic response has since fuelled speculations about ongoing political realignments ahead of the 2027 general elections, with many questioning whether Obi is indeed considering a move to the SDP.

Bashir’s remark comes in the wake of his father, Nasir El-Rufai’s high-profile exit from the APC.

The former Kaduna governor, who played a key role in the party’s formation and electoral victories in 2015, 2019, and 2023, recently submitted his resignation letter to his ward leadership in Kaduna State.

El-Rufai, who has been increasingly critical of the APC-led government under President Bola Tinubu, cited a widening disconnect between his personal values and the party’s current direction as the reason for his defection.

In a statement dated Monday, March 10, 2025, he lambasted the APC leadership, accusing them of abandoning the party’s founding progressive ideals.

“Developments in the last two years confirm that there is no desire on the part of those who currently control and run the APC to acknowledge, much less address, the unhealthy situation of the party,” El-Rufai said.

He noted that he had consistently raised concerns about the party’s trajectory, both privately and publicly, but he was ignored.

  • 2027 presidential election: Peter Obi reacts to Labour Party’s ‘no automatic ticket’ threat

2027 presidential election: Peter Obi reacts to Labour Party’s ‘no automatic ticket’ threat

Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate in the 2023 election, Peter Obi, has said he is not seeking a free ticket or special treatment ahead of the 2027 election.

TheNewsGuru reports that this comes after the party debunked reports suggesting that Peter Obi will be granted an automatic ticket to contest in the 2027 general election.

The party also refuted claims of a similar arrangement for the Governor of Abia State, Alex Otti.

The rebuttal follows recent remarks by the factional National Publicity Secretary of the party, Abayomi Arabambi, who stated that Obi would return as the party’s flagbearer to challenge President Bola Tinubu in 2027.

Arabambi made the claim while appearing as a guest on Politics Today, a programme on Channels Television.

Reacting to the development, the National Publicity Secretary of LP, Obiora Ifoh, in an interview with Punch, dismissed Arabambi’s claim, stressing that such a decision could not have emanated from the leadership of the party.

He further emphasized that the party would follow due process in selecting its candidate for the next general election.

However, Peter Obi, who spoke through his media aide, Ibrahim Umar, to the publication above, said he would not bother himself with such trivialities.

Umar said his principal had always emphasised the need for a level playing field where individuals can compete fairly and freely. He urged LP supporters and the general public to focus on the issues that truly matter rather than being swayed by misinformed narratives.

He said, “Our principal, Peter Obi, remains steadfast in his commitment to democracy and the well-being of all Nigerians. He has consistently championed the importance of good democracy, and healthy competition, recognizing that these elements are essential for a thriving democratic setting.

“It is crucial to note that Peter Obi has never sought a free ticket or special treatment. Instead, he has always emphasised the need for a level playing field, where individuals can compete fairly and freely. We urge our supporters and the general public to stay focused on the issues that truly matter, rather than being swayed by misinformed narratives.

“Peter Obi’s dedication to promoting good governance, economic growth, and social justice remains unwavering. Let’s work together to build a brighter future for Nigeria, one that is guided by the principles of democracy, fairness, and equality.

“Our principal’s actions and decisions will continue to be driven by these values, ensuring that Nigeria remains on a path towards prosperity and greatness.”
