Heavy knocks on Peter Obi over IBB’s book launch

The presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in the 2023 election, Peter Obi, has been criticized for attending the book launch of former Military President of Nigeria, Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida (rtd), which held on Thursday, 20th February 2025, in Abuja.

TheNewsGuru reports that Peter Obi, who was present at the event, via his X account, praised IBB’s contributions to Nigeria’s economy, noting that his strong support for entrepreneurship and private sector growth remains immeasurable.

According to the former Anambra State Governor, Nigeria is worse off than during IBB’s era, pointing out that countries that were all in the low Human Development Index (HDI) category, like Nigeria at the time, have advanced to medium and high HDI levels.

Reacting to the LP presidential candidate’s remarks, Nigerians, particularly young people expressed disappointment, noting that Obi should have not, in the first place, dined with ‘Nigerian people’s enemies’.

The former Anambra governor was further criticised for lacking principles and failing to distingusih himself from ‘persons who have systematically raped the country.’

Noble Eyisi wrote: “This post is one of the myriad reasons why Peter Obi will struggle to be President.

“He lacks the ability to define who his enemies are and who the Nigerian people’s enemies are. Rather than see IBB for the thief and morally decrepit person he is, he chose to attend his book launch. By attending, he failed to distinguish himself from every other person in attendance who has systematically raped this country.

“It shouldn’t surprise anyone that Peter Obi lacks principles. There’s no hill that he is willing to stick his flag on and is willing to die on. Because of this, he goes wherever the wind blows.

“It’s quite sad because he leads a movement of well intentioned Nigerians who want to see Nigeria excel but the leader of the movement is engaged in a psychological war against himself.”

Similarly, Omoyele Sowore condemned the former presidential candidate for attending the book launch, calling him a packaged fraud:

He wrote: “You don’t need to worry about @PeterObi; he is what he is, #Gbajue! He was a packaged fraud; those who packaged him knew what they did, and they’ve all mostly jumped ship- hustlers, opportunists, bigots, dissemblers, gamblers, gerrymanders, and carpet baggers. Those still left couldn’t believe they had fallen into this trap and couldn’t detour; they had fallen into a ditch and, instead of getting out, had ordered more diggers. You can’t help them.”

  • Peter Obi’s party tackles Atiku, denies receiving N50m from Tinubu

Peter Obi’s party tackles Atiku, denies receiving N50m from Tinubu

The political party with which Mr Peter Obi contested the presidential election in 2023 has denied receiving the sum of N50 million from the President Bola Tinubu administration.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports this is coming after former Vice President Atiku Abubakar made a shocking revelation that the Tinubu administration was paying political parties in the country N50 million each.

However, the party, in a statement by Obiora Ifoh, National Publicity Secretary, denied the claim and charged the former Vice President  to provide “tangible proof”.

The statement reads: “The Labour Party has said that its leadership is not aware of any bribe alleged to have been paid to the leadership of opposition parties in Nigeria by the All Progressives Congress led government.

“The party also said its leadership has never received a dime from any individual, group, organisation or government who are not members of the Labour Party.

“The party has however expressed shock and disbelief by the revelation from one of the leading political figures and former vice President of Nigeria, Atiku Abubakar, insisting that it would be improper for the politician to throw a shade at the entire opposition without also putting forward a tangible proof other than a ‘gossip’ from an unnamed source.

“The former vice President while speaking at a national conference on strengthening democracy held in Abuja accused the ruling APC of allegedly offering opposition party leaders N50 million each to undermine Nigeria’s democratic process.

“We are shocked that a high caliber politician who has contested election all his life and often regarded as a very experienced politician could make such a wild, unguarded and unfounded statement.

“For us in the Labour Party, a party which has remained the strongest and most veritable opposition and which speaks truth to power; a party that led the most serious campaign in the 2023 general election and has been steadfast and has remained the voice of the people, we view that statement as demeaning, ignominious, reckless and a let down from someone like Atiku Abubakar.

“We want to put it on record that the Labour Party has ran a frugal administration from funds internally generated, having not received supports from our elected representatives. And in spite of the challenges the party has face in the recent past, the leadership of the party has remained solid and committed to the ideals of the party.

“The leadership has not received any salary from anybody. Salaries are not hidden and it is not difficult to verify who and who are on the government payroll. It is a public document and it can be verified. We therefore advise Atiku to be circumspect and careful in generalizing certain allegations. We expect him to speak for himself and his party.

“The opposition is the oxygen of any virile democracy, because it helps put the government in power in proper checks while also ensuring inclusivity in democratic participation. Democracy without opposition is an autocracy and it takes a lot of sacrifices to sustain opposition. It is therefore frustrating and unpatriotic when leaders who ought to know better, begin to derive joy in denigrating the opposition camp and making jests of their sacrifices.

“We are therefore calling on Atiku Abubakar to provide concrete evidence to substantiate his allegations without which Nigerians will be forced to take every other of his statements with a pinch of salt and politically motivated”.

2027 political realignment: I’m not against coalition, Peter Obi clarifies

As the political realignment against 2027 continues to gather momentum, the Labour Party leader, Peter Obi has clarified his misrepresented interview report of Monday that he was against political coalition.

“I have observed that my honest interview yesterday was misquoted by many media outlets, creating a false narrative that misrepresents my position. Let me set the record straight:

“I am not against coalition, in truth, I am for it not for power grab but to position Nigeria for greatness.
I have not, and will never, advocate for any coalition or alliance that does not prioritize the welfare and progress of the ordinary Nigerian.

“Any discussion about governance must centre on what it means for the everyday Nigerian, how it will address critical issues such as access to quality healthcare, and education, and pulling people out of poverty.

“Too often in our nation’s history, individuals and groups have come together solely for the purpose of taking power for power’s sake.

“Such endeavours, devoid of genuine purpose and vision, have only deepened our challenges, leaving the ordinary Nigerian to bear the brunt of bad governance. This is what I stand firmly against.

“Leadership must be about service, not self-interest. It must be about building a nation where opportunities abound for all, where justice and equity are non-negotiable, and where governance works for the people, not against them.

“As I have always maintained, the New Nigeria is possible. But it requires us to change the way we think about power. It is not about grabbing it; it is about using it responsibly to transform lives and secure a brighter future for generations to come.

There are more yahoo people in government than on the streets – Peter Obi

The presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in the 2023 election, Peter Obi has claimed that there are more yahoo people within government than outside of it.

The term ‘ yahoo boy’ refers to internet fraudsters, a slang that originated in Nigeria during the early 2000s when Yahoo was a dominant tech platform.

The former Anambra governor, while speaking at the 4th graduation ceremony of Nexford University on Saturday, January 25, Obi expressed concern over the state of governance, describing the entire country as a crime scene.

He stressed the need for quality leadership to address Nigeria’s challenges and urged graduates to take on roles as agents of change within their communities.

“For governance, don’t think when we talk about vices, it is only yahoo boy but there are actually more in government than there are outside because we have turned the entire country into a crime scene where people inside are stealing and people outside are stealing,” Obi said.

“It is about leadership and igniting the future. It is not rocket science but it is difficult. It is being able to have a strong character, the ability not to do the wrong thing.

“It is for you to help to bring a better change in that society that you want to live in. You have acquired knowledge today.Use what you have learnt to help us change society.

“You are a victim of Nigeria because our age and the age before has refused to do what is right and you are suffering for it,” he added.

‘I hope to retire to Onitsha and take up teaching job’ – Peter Obi

The presidential candidate of the Labour party, (LP) in the 2023 general elections, Peter Obi has made known his intention to retire as a secondary school teacher.

The former Anambra governor made this known on Friday, 24th January while teaching final-year students at Dennis Memorial Grammar School, Onitsha, in commemoration of the International Day of Education.

Addressing the students during the interactive session, Obi outlined the power of education  and his desire to shape the future of Nigeria by nurturing and inspiring young minds.

He said, “I was just passing by when I decided to mark the International Day of Education here with you. I told myself there was need for me to come here and speak to students. I also know that tomorrow will mark the 100 years of existence of this school, so I came to be with you.

“Education is the most important thing in your life. It is the most important capital, equipment that you need to be successful. That you are here is a sign that you’re already a success.

“I’m here to encourage you, you are acquiring the best and some of you are potential governors and presidents and you must take your education seriously.

“In this school in 1970, I was at the gate here to salute General Gowon who visited, and joined other children to sing for him, but through education I was able to grow to the point where I sat with him on the same table and made decisions.

“I hope to retire to Onitsha someday, and take up a teaching job to inspire children.”

If anything happens to Obi, this country will never remain the same – LP chairman warns

The Chairman of Labour Party in Enugu State, Barr Casmir Agbo, has issued a stern warning to those attacking Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the LP in the 2023 general election  following his recent statements on the poor state of the nation.

Agbo, who spoke in Enugu, said “if anything happens to Peter Obi, there will be problems in Nigeria.”

It would be recalled that Obi, a former Anambra governor had urged President Bola Tinubu to travel on Nigerian roads and also seek medical attention at the country’s general hospitals, among others, to feel the pains Nigerians are passing through under his government.

Obi’s statement sparked some altercations between him and the ruling All Progressives Congress, with Obi alleging threats to his life and businesses.

Agbo said the anti-Obi reactions meant that true democracy was not in practice in Nigeria.

Quoting him, “We don’t have democracy in Nigeria. From 1999 to 2023, our electoral process has been by selection. What we practise is gangsterism democracy. Obi’s complaints are not the first of its kind. At a time, former President Muhammadu Buhari wept that his mandate was stolen.

“We are mocking ourselves and democracy. This is a country that professors rig elections. Obi’s state of the nation’s press conference was in line with the tenets of democracy.”

He said the reactions from APC to Obi’s points were in contrast to President Tinubu’s activism during the military era.

According to him, “It is surprising because Tinubu is a product of NADECO, which fought the military to standstill.

“During the era of former President Goodluck Jonathan, Tinubu and his likes said all sorts of things against him. Nobody arrested them. This shows that it is not easy to be in the opposition in Africa.

“If anything happens to Peter Obi for speaking the minds of many Nigerians, this country will never remain the same again.

“I advise this government to be guided by our constitution. Tinubu shouldn’t be afraid of criticisms. He should be democratic enough.”
