Fighting corruption not difficult – Peter Obi

The 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Mr Peter Obi, says fighting corruption in Nigeria is not as difficult as being generally perceived.

Obi stated this at a talk show session on youth and leadership opportunities with students of Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University (ATBU), Bauchi on Friday.

“We are talking about corruption, but let me tell you, fighting corruption is not as difficult as people make it look.

“If you, your wife and children are not stealing, you have reduced corruption by 60 per cent.

“I’ve served as chairman of a bank at a time when most people who were directors of banks were busy taking loans from their banks.

“Go and check any bank where I was a director or chairman, where that bank gave me a loan as a director. Go and check whether there was anything missing while I was there.

“I served as governor of a state for eight years and I challenge everybody to go and show me where one kobo of Anambra State that I’m not entitled to was linked to me,” he said.

According to him, corruption can be fought swiftly, reiterating that if given the opportunity to serve as president in 2027, he will serve for only one term of four years.

“If I have the opportunity to serve as Nigeria’s president in 2027, I will do so for only four years. It can be less but it will never be more. I will not stay a day longer than four years.

“People say what can you do in four years? There is a lot you can do in four years because you can bring civility and laws that start good governance in four years,” he said.

The former presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 general elections, Peter Obi has donated the sum of N10 million to the students of Malikiya College of Nursing & Social Sciences in Bauchi.

Obi who was on unscheduled visit to Bauchi, noted that the number one measure success of any nation is health, which cannot be measured without human structure.

Obi also visited the Intisharu Taufizul Qur’anic School in Yewa, Bauchi where he donated the sum of N5 million to support the children’s education.

He predicted that the world would be at the mercy of nurses in 2030, and commended the Malikiya students for undergoing the important course.

He told the nursing students, “You are very important to the society, you are very important to this country called Nigeria and if there is anything we can do to support what you are doing, we need to do it.

“Today, we know that the number one measure of success of any nation is health and you can’t measure health without thinking of the human infrastructure

  • Kwam 1: ‘They would’ve blamed Peter Obi if the Pilot was Igbo’ – Fayose

Kwam 1: ‘They would’ve blamed Peter Obi if the Pilot was Igbo’ – Fayose

Social commentator, Isaac Fayose, has weighed in on the clash between Fuji singer, KWAM 1 and a ValueJet pilot, Captain Oluranti Ogoyi during a flight boarding process on Tuesday.

Fayose while reacting to the incident suggested that if the pilot involved were from the Igbo ethnic group, many would have assumed the action was politically motivated, linking it to Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of Labour Party (LP) in 2023 general elections.

The controversy surrounds an incident at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja, where K1 De Ultimate allegedly attempted to board a ValueJet flight with a flask containing alcohol, sparking a safety breach.

The situation escalated, with the plane taxying and nearly hitting K1 De Ultimate. Two ValueJet pilots involved in the incident, Captain Oluranti Ogoyi and First Officer Ivan Oloba, were suspended for violating Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).

The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) however, sanctioned K1 De Ultimate, restricting him from flying nationally and internationally for six months. The sanction follows the incident at the Abuja airport, where K1 De Ultimate’s actions were deemed a breach of aviation safety regulations.

The NCAA also petitioned the Attorney-General of the Federation and the Inspector-General of Police, asking them to investigate and prosecute veteran Fuji musician.

Speaking, Fayose said: ‘’Just imagine that the pilot is an Igbo man or woman, the thing when go dey happen now for our country be say them for say na Peter Obi send am. Just Imagine! The country is so lawless. People we see now are the arrogant people. The ‘’Do you know who I am.”

2027 poll: As in 2023, Obi leads ‘campaign’ for president – By Ehichioya Ezomon

About 19 months to the next General Election, it looks as if the franchise is weeks or even days away. What with heightened activities in the polity, headlined by alignments and realignments of majorly opposition politicians and parties in their quest to “remove” President Bola Tinubu and his ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) from power in 2027!

Apart from the drumbeats by stakeholders for re-election of Tinubu, who’s only shown interest by body language, an early bird in the bid for president is former Anambra State Governor and candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in the 2023 poll, Mr Peter Obi.

Ahead of the rollout of activities for the election, Obi’s practically kickstarted campaigns for 2027, tweaking only his strategy as political exigencies demand, but following the 2023 cycle playbook when he shredded the formbook to place third in the declaration of the poll results by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Below, abridged only for dates, is a recap of those strategy and playbook – published under the caption, “Why Obi blazes trail of 2023 polls,” in my Monday column of August 29, 2022 – to serve as a guide to how Obi approaches the 2027 election. Happy reading:”Barely six months to the February (2023) presidential election, contenders for the position have virtually yielded the field to candidate Peter Obi and his platform, the Labour Party.

“The candidates of other major parties: All Progressives Congress, Peoples Democratic Party and the New Nigeria Peoples Party appear to have no stake in the polls.

“What Nigerians read, watch or hear in the media is, Peter Obi’s here, Peter Obi’s there, and Peter Obi’s everywhere, as if the former Anambra State governor is ubiquitous.

“But he’s not! Unlike the rest candidates posturing for president, Obi’s seeming “ubiquity” is located in the seriousness he attaches to the processes of the election.

“Well, Obi’s an “opportunist” defined by vocabulary.com as, “One who sees a chance to gain some advantage from a situation, often at the expense of ethics or morals.”

“To urbandictionary.com, an opportunist is, “One willing to befriend any person regardless of race, creed, gender, sexuality or socioeconomic status if the relationship benefits them directly or indirectly by improving their public image.”

“What an apt description of Obi, who simply seizes on the current national discontent, disaffection, disappointment, disillusionment, dissatisfaction, dissonance, and disunity to fire up Nigerians, to join him in the race for 2023!

“Remember where Obi comes from. When he decamped from the PDP to LP in May 2022, he’s confronted with the issue of “lack of political structure” to kickstart his run.

“Other posers were: What did Obi achieve as governor (2006-2014)? What experience has he got to govern a complex country as Nigeria? As part of the old order, what new things are Obi bringing to the table?

“The answers rest on these bywords: “A toothless animal is the first to arrive to eat of the fallen fruits.” “The morning shows the day.” “If you fail to plan, you are planning to fail.” “As you make your bed, so you must lie on it.”

“Obi has risen early, to plan to succeed in the crucial 2023 election, so that he’d have cause to lie comfortably on his well-laid bed after the poll. It’s that simple!

“Because Obi actually lacked the structure – physical and representative – to reach millions of eligible voters, he’d to first embark on an aggressive mobilisation, deploying modern tools of communication to maximum effect.

“It’s to capture the youths, to buy into, and spread his “New Nigeria” message that stresses youth engagement, empowerment and development for a 21st century society.

“Has Obi succeeded in this strategy? Absolutely! Like a wild fire, the youths have turned his (small) acorn into millions for a revolutionary change of the status quo.

“Adopting the appellation of “ObIdients” for all supporters, the drivers of his campaign have segmented their operations into two: swarm the media space, and take over the political arena of the country.

“Hence Obi leads on social media platforms, and political events and quasi-rallies, even as the Independent National Electoral Commission has yet to sanction electioneering.

“As he tweets regularly to his followers, or comments on issues of concern to the public, Obi engages in several events, some taking him to more than one state, in a day.

“He’s either attending seminars, workshops or meetings organised by political groups or professional bodies; paying homage or solidarity visits to persons or groups; or joining in worship at church services or crusades.

“Obi presents himself as a different breed of politician, who’s prepared to engage Nigerians by highlighting the issues plaguing the country, and how he’ll solve them.

“He isn’t afraid to speak to Nigeria’s economy, education and security, even as fact checkers query the alleged exaggerated or inaccurate examples, comparisons and figures he reels out to support his presentations.

“And confronted on such “inaccuracies,” Obi has a ready response: “Go and verify,” knowing the very low reading culture in Nigeria, where even truth is a scarce commodity.

“An unflattering saying is that, to hide something from a Nigerian, you put it in writing, in form of a book, as they won’t open, nor peruse it. So, with no appetite for reading, most Nigerians judge the content of a book by its cover.

“The likes of Obi make un-informed, incorrect, imprecise, outlandish or even unfounded pronouncements because the audience, mainly of their supporters, won’t question their assertions. Rather, the captive listeners applaud and ovate every anecdote, innuendo, nuance and gesture.

“The upside is that Obi controls his messaging by talking, engaging, and proffering solutions to problems. Whether the messaging makes sense is a different story. But his listeners’ enthusiastic receptions answer that poser!

“Obi enjoys a rockstar status wherever he goes. His entry into a gathering causes excitement and commotion, as the attendees mob, hug and take selfies with him. And when he’s formally announced, a standing ovation takes over.

“The other candidates only come out irregularly, or speak through surrogates – not to address the real issues at play, but to fight the fires they or their campaigns have lit.

“They hibernate – in Nigeria and overseas – waiting for the electoral umpire to blow the whistle before they show up publicly to tell Nigerians what they have for them in 2023.

“Because there’s a dearth of engagement by the other candidates, the media “rely” on Obi as their main source of “relevant” news on 2023, even from a single assignment.

“For example, within minutes of the leadership summit by the Labour Party and Coalition for Peter Obi on August 11 (2023) in Abuja, the media published four news items on Obi.

“The headlines: *How Labour Party will transform Nigeria’s economy from consumption to production –Peter Obi *2023: We have structure, ready to save Nigeria, Obi boasts *What I’ll do after winning 2023 presidential election –Obi *Leadership deficit Nigeria’s greatest undoing –Peter Obi.

“On the same day, the candidates of the APC and PDP earned such headlines as: *Catholics blast Lalong over reference to Pope, demand apology *Tinubu/Shettima: Lalong explains his reference to Pope *2023 polls: Imams, Pastors pray for Tinubu, Sanwa-Olu’s success *PDP crisis: Atiku sends Adamawa gov to Wike, meeting deadlocked *Atiku should beg Wike to win 2023 election –Onwordi *PDP crisis: Please, apply brakes, before it’s too late, Dele Momodu warns Wike.

“That’s why Obi blazes the trail, leaving the other major candidates to play catch-up. But will his approach take him to the finish line in February 2023? Obi thinks so!

“Still, Ecclesiastes 9:11 admonishes: “… the race is not to the swift, nor the battle to the strong, neither yet bread to the wise, nor yet riches to men of understanding, nor yet favour to men of skill; but time and chance happeneth to them all.” (King James Version).

As it turned out in 2023, Obi got very close – a couple of whiskers – to the Aso Rock Presidential Villa seat of government and power in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital city. But as the saying goes, “Nearly does not kill a bird.” Will the same or similar calculations and permutations get Obi past the finish line, and into the Executive Mansion in 2027? The answer is in the belly of time!

  • 2027: Peter Obi replies critics of one-term vow, calling him desperate

2027: Peter Obi replies critics of one-term vow, calling him desperate

The presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in the 2023 general elections, Peter Obi has insisted that he plans to govern Nigeria for only one term if elected as President, adding that turning the tide in four years is possible.

TheNewsGuru.com(TNG) reports that the former Anambra State governor, made this known amid widespread criticism over his promise to do one term.

Speaking, Obi in a statement via his social media pages,  on Tuesday expressed surprised that his decision to do four years is generating so much agitation. He stated that going by the reactions, critics are doubting the fact that a sincere leader can achieve much in 48 months.

Peter Obi said: “I have never been desperate in the pursuit of power, or anything else, for that matter. There are some traits associated with desperation, which in no way are in any of my political behaviours in the past and now, like engaging in overly aggressive rhetoric or actions to prove a point or gain attention; becoming overly defensive or reactive to criticism, often to the point of appearing paranoid.

“Making unrealistic or unfulfillable promises to win support or approval, resorting to personal attacks or character assassination to discredit opponents or frequently changing positions or policies to suit immediate political needs.

“What drives me is not personal ambition, but a deep, commitment to see Nigeria work. And if the sacrifice required of me is four years of sincere, accountable leadership, so be it.

“Throughout my political journey, I have never been involved in thuggery, the snatching of ballot boxes, or any form of electoral malpractice. I challenge anyone: conduct your investigations. You will find no stains of rigging or violence associated with my name. I have always chosen the path of peace, principle, and civility.”

He stated that those who have contested against him the past were ever denied their rights, framed, or falsely accused.

According to him, he never asked his opponents to place their advert materials or break the bank to do so, stressing that he believes in fair competition, not manufactured victories.

Peter Obi added: “In four years we can confront corruption head-on, redirecting resources to priority areas. For instance, the trillions used to acquire new presidential jets and other unnecessary expenses at this time could have been channelled into education, healthcare, or infrastructure.

“Within the same period, we ensure that the rule is sacrosanct and the rule of law is strictly followed. Within the same period, we can conduct free, fair and credible elections

“Leadership, to me, is not about entitlement. It is about service. If given the mandate, for just one term, I will dedicate every moment to building a Nigeria that works for all.

  • 2027: Peter Obi responds to Gov Soludo’s mockery of one term bid

2027: Peter Obi responds to Gov Soludo’s mockery of one term bid

The presidential candidate of the Labour party(LP) in the 2023 general elections Peter Obi has maintained that he would only govern for one-term if elected as President in 2027.

TheNewsGuru recalls that the Governor Chukwuma Soludo of Anambra State during a political rally held in Anambra South in support of his second-term ambition, slammed politicians promising to serve only one term in office.

According to the former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, any politician pledging to serve only one term in office needs to undergo a psychiatric test.

The governor questioned the logic behind such a promise, insisting that the Nigerian Constitution allows elected public officials to serve two terms, not just one.

“How can anybody with a functioning brain say that? Do you think you’re speaking to fools?

“You come to people and say you will do only one term, any politician who says that must be sent to a psychiatric home because the person must have some mental problem,” Soludo said.

Reacting in a statement on Sunday, Peter Obi stressed that he will serve only one term of four years if elected President, stating that his vow is sacrosanct.

According to the former Labour party presidential candidate, the decay in our society has made trust one of the scarcest and most sceptically viewed commodities.

His statement read: “One of the greatest American Presidents, Abraham Lincoln, served only four years, yet his legacy endures as a model of principled leadership. Another iconic figure, John F. Kennedy, did not even complete a full term, yet his vision and ideals continue to inspire generations. In Africa, Nelson Mandela, revered globally as a symbol of justice and reconciliation, chose to serve only one term as President of South Africa, despite immense public pressure to stay longer. His decision was a deliberate act of leadership, a statement that power must serve the people, not the self. Indeed, history shows that the longer many African leaders remain in power, the more likely they are to be corrupted by it. Longevity in office is not a mark of success; rather, it is purposeful, accountable service – however brief – that defines true statesmanship.

“It is within this context that I reiterate my vow: I will serve only one term of four years if elected President. And that vow is sacrosanct.

“I am fully aware that the decay in our society has made trust one of the scarcest and most sceptically viewed commodities. Many Nigerians, understandably, no longer take politicians at their word. But even in this climate of cynicism, there are still a few whose actions have matched their words – whose integrity is built on verifiable precedent.

“Recently, I became aware of two statements aimed, albeit indirectly, at my vow to serve only a single four-year term. One person remarked that even if I swore by a shrine, I still wouldn’t be believed. Another suggested that anyone talking about doing only one term should undergo psychiatric evaluation.

“I understand the basis of their scepticism. They are judging me by their own standards – where political promises are made to be broken. But they forget, or perhaps choose to ignore, that Peter Obi is not cut from that cloth. I have a verifiable track record that speaks louder than speculation.

“In my political life, my word is my bond. When I entered politics in Anambra State, I made clear and measurable promises to the people: to improve education and healthcare, to open up rural areas through road construction, and to manage public funds with prudence. I fulfilled each of those promises without deviation. I did not swear by a shrine, nor have I been certified mentally unstable as a result of honouring my word.

“My vow to serve only one term of four years is a solemn commitment, rooted in my conviction that purposeful, transparent leadership does not require an eternity.

“If making such a promise qualifies me for psychiatric evaluation, then we may as well question the mental fitness of those who framed our Constitution, which clearly stipulates a four-year renewable tenure.

“I maintain without equivocation: if elected, I will not spend a day longer than four years in office. In fact, I believe that service should be impactful, not eternal.

“We must rebuild trust in our country. I have dedicated my public life to demonstrating that leadership with integrity is not a myth. I have done it before, and I do not intend to betray that trust under any circumstances.

“Forty-eight months is enough for any leader who is focused and prepared to make a meaningful difference. In that time, I intend not merely to make an impression, but to deliver on concrete promises to: sanitise our governance system; tackle insecurity through effective and accountable use of national resources; prioritise education, healthcare, and poverty alleviation; catalyse small businesses as engines of growth ; and combat corruption with unflinching resolve.

“Above all, I will dedicate myself to transforming Nigeria from a consuming nation into a productive one, where agriculture, technology, and manufacturing replace rent-seeking and waste as our national anchors.

“These are not utopian dreams. They are realistic, actionable goals that are achievable within four years.”

Peter Obi will defeat any candidate in the North under PDP – Jerry Gana

Jerry Gana, a founding member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has expressed his belief that the presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, would be able to defeat any candidate in the northern states if he returns to the PDP.

Gana stated that the former governor of Anambra will accomplish this because Northerners are fair-minded and just.

During a Wednesday appearance on Prime Time, a program on Arise Television, Gana noted that some potential opponents might choose to remain silent rather than challenge the PDP in the upcoming 2027 presidential election.

He said this is because the PDP has become “so good, fascinating, and real.”

He stated that efforts are still on to woo Obi back to the party.

“The PDP is on the ground. I’m a researcher, and I research opinions. In the northern states, Peter Obi under the PDP will defeat any candidate because our people are very fair-minded and just.

We are reaching out to Peter Obi. Because I’m leading a search team and there are many brilliant people, Peter may be good, but we have somebody better. So, we are searching,” he said.

Gana also said the opposition party made a mistake about the circumstances that led to Obi’s exit from the PDP.

We made a mistake in 2023. If I were Atiku, I would say, ‘Peter, it is now your turn; I would give you a vice-president,’ but he didn’t,” he said.

10,217 killed so far despite Tinubu’s ₦4.91tn security budget – Peter Obi continues to tackle presidency

Peter Obi, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party, has expressed concern over Nigeria’s growing debt, increasing insecurity, and escalating poverty under President Bola Tinubu’s administration.

He cautioned that the country is on the brink of a severe fiscal and developmental crisis if these issues are not addressed.

In a statement released on Monday, Obi criticized the National Assembly’s recent approval of significant new external and domestic borrowings.

He highlighted a “worrying lack of accountability, transparency, and tangible impact” on the lives of Nigerians as a major concern.

“On July 22, 2025, the Senate approved additional borrowings of $21 billion, €2.2 billion, and ¥15 billion, along with a ₦750.98 billion domestic bond issuance and a €65 million grant. When added to our existing public debt of ₦149.39 trillion as of Q1 2025, we are now staring at a total debt burden of about ₦187 trillion,” Obi said.

He warned that Nigeria’s total debt could cross ₦200 trillion by the end of the year, while noting that the country’s GDP-to-debt ratio has reached historic highs.

“Before rebasing, our debt was equivalent to nearly 70% of our GDP. After rebasing—which pushed the GDP to ₦372.8 trillion (about $243.7 billion)—our debt still stands at over 50.16% of GDP, the highest in our history,” he added.

Despite this massive borrowing, Obi said Nigerians continue to suffer from deteriorating living conditions across key sectors.

The former Anambra State Governor argued that despite the ₦4.91 trillion budgeted for security in 2025—up from ₦2.98 trillion in 2023, security has not improved

“Between May 29, 2023, and May 29, 2025, over 10,217 people were killed, and 672 villages were sacked across the country. How do we explain this horrific outcome despite the trillions spent on security?” he asked.

Obi noted that the state of insecurity, especially in rural communities, continues to drive displacement, hunger, and poverty.

“It is disheartening that while our people are being slaughtered and driven from their homes, we keep approving loans without demanding results from those tasked with protecting lives and property.

Nigerians react to Peter Obi’s birthday message to Gov Soludo

The presidential candidate of the Labour Party(LP) in the 2023 general elections, Peter Obi, has caused a stir while felicitating with the Anambra State Governor, Chukwuma Soludo, on his 65th birth anniversary.

Obi took to his Facebook on Monday to express warm wishes to the governor.

“Your Excellency, My dear elder brother, My family and I join other men and women of goodwill in rejoicing with you as you mark another year today.

“May God continue to bless you with strength, wisdom, and good health as you serve our dear state and nation. Happy Birthday, Your Excellency,” Obi said.

However, Obi’s decision to publicly celebrate the governor sparked reactions among some Nigerians, who noted Soludo’s silence on Obi’s birthday earlier in July.

Below are some of the reactions on Facebook:

Eroh Erohdaking said, “You see, wisdom can never be bought with money. You can be a professor, but you don’t have wisdom.”

Hrh Igwe Nnaemeka Omemgbeoji said, “…Even when Charles Chukwuma Soludo didn’t wish you happy birthday on your day, you still took time to wish him. Your charisma needs to be studied.”

Tochukwu Paschal said, “I will wait until the day you will mistakenly wish Reno a happy birthday in the name of ‘he’s my well-respected junior brother’ and all that gentleman talk. Na that day we go show you say no be only you get yourself again.”

Anukanti Vigilius Chukwuka said, “This man is very different from African politicians. This is the man we need to reset Nigeria.”

Ferdinand Ohalee said, “His Excellency, when you go low you go high. In the new Nigeria of our dream, there won’t be any iota of bitterness rather love, compassion and dedication to service to humanity. Happy birthday Prof Charles Soludo.”
