Tinubu is far better than Peter Obi – Reno Omokri

A former aide to ex-President Goodluck Jonathan, Reno Omokri,  has described the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Bola Ahmed Tinubu as a better leader than Labour Party (LP) candidate, Peter Obi ahead of the 2023 presidential election.

Omokri, while outlining Tinubu’s achievements in series of tweets, explained Obi lacks the characteristics necessary to lead the country compared to the former governor of Lagos State.

He described how both presidential candidates led their respective States, stating Obi invested Anambra resources at a loss but Tinubu invested Lagos resources to make huge profit for the state.

His tweet reads: “In terms of how they governed their states, Peter Obi is no match for Tinubu. Tinubu invested Lagos money in Econet and made a huge profit. Obi invested Anambra money in SABMIller and got a massive loss. But are we ready for this conversation without altercation? #TableShaker

“In terms of managing men and money, Tinubu is far better than Obi, though I agree he is a crook. He increased Lagos’s IGR revenue far better than Obi did in Anambra. And he installed successors that are loyal to him, while Obiano fell out with Obi within months! #TableShaker.”

  • Who are these Obidients? – By Femi Fani-Kayode

Who are these Obidients? – By Femi Fani-Kayode

    By Femi Fani-Kayode

Let me make this clear from the outset. I am a member of the APC and a supporter of Asiwaju Bola Tinubu.

This contribution does not in any way derogate from that and my analysis is more of an academic and intellectual exercise than anything else.

I am NOT a supporter of Peter Obi and I have NO intention of becoming one. I am however interested on what his supporters represent and stand for and that is the subject of this essay.

They are worthy of my attention only because their rise and relevance in the political configuration of our nation, just in a matter of weeks, is meteoric and phenomenal.

In order to counter and defeat them or to keep them in their place we must at least attempt to understand them and figure out how their minds work.

    The following are my findings:

Those that are the supporters of Peter Obi, the Labour Party presidential candidate, are known as ‘Obidients’ and they are EVERYWHERE.

Those of us in the larger political parties like the ruling APC and the opposition PDP, treat them with contempt and ignore them at our own peril.

The truth is that they are far more dangerous to our collective cause as a ruling class than many of us can possibly conceive or appreciate.

Only the discerning can appreciate this and know precisely where this whole thing may be heading.

They may not have structures or elected representatives in the legislative and executive arms of Government but they have IDEAS and VISION coupled with a clear ideological and philosophical bent which can and will endure for far longer than mere political platforms and structures.

Unknown to them as well as virtually everyone else, therein lies their power. As they say, an idea whose time has come cannot be stopped.

Long after we are all gone they will still be here because structures and political alliances rarely endure but IDEAS and VISION last forever.

Again they will outlive and outlast us all because they are not a political party in the true sense of the word but rather a growing national movement which scales and spreads across ethnic, religious, political and regional lines and traditional boundaries.

They also represent a generational and paradigm shift which is increasingly attractive to many and they are bound tightly together by a common purpose, common cause and common objective: namely to rid Nigeria of the old order and usher in the new.

That is really what they want to do and that is the primary and strongest source of their inspiration and motivation.

They are far more dangerous to what the French describe as the ‘Ancien Regime’, the old political class and the entire system itself than anything we have ever seen before because most of them, bar their leader and a small handful of political tried and tested veterans and old war horses around him, are NOT politicians and have never ventured anywhere near the political arena or the circles of power.

In the main they are an innovatively aggressive and frightful array and association of angry and determined young men and women who clearly have the courage of their convictions coupled with the audacity, fury, daring, rage and firm resolve of those that were involved in the Endsars protesters and the fiery footsoldiers that effected the 1917 Russian Bolshevik revolution led by Vladimir Iliyich Lenin.

There is also something Rawlingesque and intimidating about them.

That is to say they are like the late, great and mighty son of Africa and leader of Ghana, President Jerry Rawlings, who also led a successful revolution in his country in 1979 and who, on his second coming in 1981 when he toppled yet another Government said, “if there is no justice there can be no peace!”

That is the spirit that is in the Obidients and that is what moves them.

Yet though they do not like to hear it their chances of winning the presidential election next year, short of a miracle, are very slim and deep down they all know it even if they refuse to publicly acknowledge it.

Despite that they are determined to fight to the end, hope for the best, work hard and give it their best shot and, of course, therein lies their victory.

In this game courage is the key. As they say, ‘he who dares wins’. Again as they say, ‘fortune favours the bold’ and these young people are both daring and bold.

That they can challenge the status quo and vie for the sacred and awesome power that has been shared by the two major political parties or their ancestral variants over the last 62 years is commendable in itself. I am not part of them but I certainly commend and applaud their efforts.

They too have a right to fight for their rights and future and to be heard. They too have a dream and a story to tell and we must never begrudge them that.

Yet if the truth be told they are not only interested in winning an election but, perhaps even more importantly, they are interested in making a profound and defiant statement, registering their protest against the status qou and the powers that be and triggering and engendering a full scale, comprehensive and all-embracing social, cultural and political revolution.

They want a real and fundamental change and not a fake one. They want to pull the whole house and system down with everyone in it and rebuild a new one in their own image, with their own values and on their own terms.

Most important of all they want to see the back of those of us that are in any way associated with the old order or that have been in Government or the corridors of power at ANY point in time over the last 62 years.

That desire and sentiment is the force that is driving and propelling them and that is kindling their fire and swelling their ranks.

They are like the Robspiers and the Marats of the bloody French revolution between 1789 and 1799 whose battle cry was “liberty, equality and fraternity”, who brought an end to the French monarchy, Royal family and nobility, chopped off their heads and established a proud and strong new order and proud Republic.

Like Robspier’s tiny cabal of French revolutionaries they are led by a small cell of intellectual and idealistic hardliners and are bolstered, girded and supported by a volatile, massive and increasingly dangerous support group and power base who threaten violence and hurl insults at their perceived detractors at the drop of a hat and as a consequence of years of pent up anger and frustration.

If they ever get power many heads will role and many of today’s and yesterday’s leaders will run into exile or go into hiding.

This is especially so of those who have something to hide or who have skeletons in their cupboards.

That is what makes them so threatening and I repeat, those of us that are in the larger political parties or that are members of the existing and ancient ruling class underestimate them, ignore them and display disdain for their firm resolve and rising anger at our own peril.

Most of my political associates, friends and colleagues across party lines tend to dismiss them with contempt.

They regard them as being inconsequential and argue that they only exist on social media. I beg to differ. I see them in the streets and I see them in the Churches.

I see them amongst my staff and amongst those that regard themselves as being amongst the oppressed and downtrodden.i see them amongst the professionals and those thst are bankers, lawyers, doctors and artists.

I see them in the North, West, East and South. I see them everywhere and not only on social media.

I see them as being a very powerful and potent rising force which, if properly managed, will develop into a major political power over the next few years with a strong ideological and electoral foundation and massive structures.

That is the potential that they have and that is how dangerous they can be.

The sooner those of us that are in the larger political parties get off our high horses, display a little humility, try and understand their mindset, reach out to them, take them more seriously, appreciate their anger, restore their hope, make the necessary concessions and try and abate their rage and rising angst the better it will be for us all.

They may not have today but if we do not play our cards right they may end up having tomorrow.

    May God help us all.

2023: Atiku, Peter Obi counter each other at NBA conference

On Monday, presidential candidates of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi of the Labour Party attended the opening ceremony of the 2022 edition of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) annual general conference in Lagos State.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports that the 2022 NBA annual general conference, which will run until August 26, is being held with the theme “Bold Transitions” at the Eko Atlantic City.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, the presidential candidate of the Labour Party for the 2023 elections said for Nigeria to come out of the mess it is in, a visionary, articulated and competent leadership is required to start turning things around.

The Labour Party presidential candidate, who received a tumultuous welcome at the opening ceremony of the NBA annual conference, hinged the security challenges of the country on the challenge of unemployment.

Speaking further, Obi said what is worse is the fiscal mess Nigeria is in, stressing that in other to come out of the mess, the 2023 elections should not be about tribe and religion but about voting in competent leaders with the commitment to deliver.

“Out of 200 million Nigerians, 60% is supposed to be working. So, we are supposed to have 120 million Nigerians working, but today, Nigerians that are working are under 50 million. So, 70 something million of Nigerians are not working, they are not productive. When you compare this to your productivity, you will see how low it is.

“But, what is even worse, we are in a fiscal mess, total fiscal mess because of all these. Between January this year and April, the total revenue of the federal government of Nigeria is N1.630 trillion. Then, expenditure, is N4.720 trillion. If you minus this, you will have a deficit of N3.1 trillion. That shows almost 200% is a deficit. And this is the crisis we face.

“How did we come here, it is the accumulation of leadership failure over the years. To come out of this, you need to have a visionary, articulated and competent leadership to start turning around this. The election we are going to have next year, would not be about tribe, no religion, not connection, not entitlement; it must be an election about character, competence, capacity, and commitment to deliver, Obi said.

Speaking in a panel session, the former Anambra State Governor further outlined “important” areas Nigeria must tackle “aggressively” for a greater economy, stressing that investment in intangible assets such as education and power are critical for economic renaissance.

“What we need to do is the two most intangible assets: security; and law and order… provide a conducive environment to attract investors, then education and power. The economy is driven by these intangible assets,” Obi said.

2023: I’m not on trial and error mission – Atiku Abubakar

Meanwhile, in his remarks at the ceremony, Atiku, in what seems to be a reference to the presidential candidate of the Labour Party, boasted that he has actively participated in governance and that his ambition to become the president of Nigeria in 2023 was not a trial and error mission.

The former Vice President, who was also a speaker in the panel session and who disclosed that he will hand over federal universities to state governments if he should emerge president in 2023, said: “I have seen, I have participated, and I have felt well for this country. So I am not on trial and error leadership”.

Speaking on handing over federal universities to state governments, Atiku said: “I had an argument with a university professor from Federal University, Lokoja. He said he read in my policy document that I intended to devolve, in other words, to return education to the states. How dare do I do that?

“I said, ‘Mr Professor, do you realise that the first set of our universities belong to the regional governments?’ He said, ‘Yes’. I said who are the successors of the regional government? He said the states. I said the children you send to America, to England, who own those universities? Mostly the private sector. So, why is it that you think we cannot do it here? We don’t have the money”.

He also disclosed that the only way to tackle the issue of the Nigerian economy is to make sure there is a conducive environment available to both foreign and local investors to participate, stressing whether it is infrastructure, education or power.

TNG, meanwhile, reports that award-winning novelist, Chimamanda Adichie, who gave a keynote address at the event, said Nigerians are starved of heroes and young people have nobody to look up to.

2023: IPOB rejects Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi

The Indigenous People of Biafra, (IPOB), has distanced itself from the Labour party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, and the Igbo presidency, saying their agitation is clear from day one.

IPOB reiterated that it’s neither interested in an Igbo President nor a Nigerian President of Southeast extraction.

The group said its members are not part of Obi’s supporters because they are interested in Nigeria’s disintegration.

This information was contained in a statement signed and released by IPOB spokesman Emma Powerful.

Powerful, the spokesman of the separatist group, said Nigeria was irredeemable.

Powerful’s statement reads in part: “The Igbo people rallying behind Peter Obi are not IPOB members because IPOB’s goal is the disintegration of the Nigerian enterprise irrespective of whether Peter Obi or anyone else from the Biafran geographic space is contesting in the Nigerian farce of an election.

“IPOB is a freedom fighting movement and has nothing whatsoever to do with or in Nigerian politics. So long as we in IPOB are concerned, Nigeria is irredeemable.”

IPOB also reiterated its call for the release of its leader, Nnamdi Kanu, and a referendum in the Southeast.

The Indigenous People of Biafra is a nationalist separatist group in Nigeria that aims to restore the Republic of Biafra, a country that seceded from Nigeria before the Nigerian Civil War and later rejoined Nigeria after its defeat by the Nigerian military

2023: Ozigbo quits PDP, declares support for Peter Obi

The governorship candidate of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) for the gubernatorial election in Anambra State in 2021, Valentine Ozigbo has resigned from the party and declared support for the presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Mr Peter Obi.

Ozigbo, a former President and Group Chief Executive Officer of Transcorp Plc, revealed this during an appearance on ‘The Arise Interview’ on Thursday evening, saying that his decision to resign from the PDP was based on the need to ensure that a visionary leader is elected to lead Nigeria into the future.

Ahead of his TV appearance, Ozigbo also released a statement where he endorsed Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Labour Party.

“His Excellency, Peter Obi was the governor of my home state of Anambra for eight years. The groundswell of support that his candidacy is receiving from Anambra, the South East, and the entire country is based mainly on the revolutionary, inclusive, and inspiring leadership he demonstrated as a governor,” Ozigbo declared.

“Before he was 40 years, Peter Obi had created an enviable mark in the private sector. A multiple-award-winning banker, entrepreneur, and globally trained business leader, Obi took the helm of Anambra State after a long fight for justice.

“Eight years later, he had completely transformed the leadership culture in Anambra with his style of down-to-earth grassroots engagement, prudential management of resources, and keen vision for qualitative transformation.

“Peter Obi is the Nigerian politician I have the utmost respect for. Having worked with him closely during my governorship campaign in 2021, I can attest that Obi is a thoughtful, kind, and generous leader who seeks excellence in all he does.

“After spending many months working with this phenomenal human, I am convinced that he has an abiding love for Nigeria and all Nigerians.

“He has the right vision for this country, the temperance, and the capacity and experience to take Nigeria out of these troubled waters and lead us to a land of promise.

“I acknowledge the brilliant choice of His Excellency Peter Obi’s running mate, Dr Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed. Together, this is an unbeatable presidential ticket, and they deserve the support of all well-meaning Nigerians,” he stated.

Ozigbo added, “Pulled by the brilliance of the candidacy of Peter Obi and Yusuf Datti, inspired by the passion of the Nigerian youth, and driven by an undying love for Nigeria, I, Valentine Ozigbo, at this moment, formally join the Obi-dient Movement”.

  • Peter Obi shares his campaign idea with Nigeria’s afrobeat musician, Femi Kuti

Peter Obi shares his campaign idea with Nigeria’s afrobeat musician, Femi Kuti

Presidential candidate of Labour Party (LP)  Peter Obi, has informed Nigeria’s afrobeat musician, Femi Kuti, that his campaign will dwell on everyday issues affecting Nigerians and Nigeria.

According to him, his ‘Obidient movement’ will base its campaign on issues rather than personality attacks.

The former Anambra governor, who in a video clip online gave the assurance when he visited the musician, noted that the recent controversy was not what the movement and his ambition stand for.

Others present during the meeting include Charles Oputa, known better as Charly Boy, among others.

“I saw what my own brother, Femi, tweeted and I said no! that is not what the future and the society we want to build.

“We will lead a campaign based on issues that affect Nigerians and that is what I encourage everybody to do,” he said while addressing Femi in the video clip,” Obi asserted.

While the detail of the visit is unknown, it may not be unconnected to the recent online squabble between the veteran musician and Obi’s supporters.

Earlier, the musician was said to have described Obi’s supporters as “zombies”.

“How can you be Obidient in this chaos? I am not Obidient. Tell me, at 60, why am I Obidient? You said I should be Obidient, sit down, be peaceful,” he said.

“Are you all okay in this country?,” Kuti was quoted to have allegedly said during a performance at the Shrine Thursday night.

However, the veteran musician faulted the claims, saying he was misquoted and he never described the supporters as “zombies”.

In a series of Tweets on Friday, Kuti said, “You are such liars. Of what benefit is it to the people when you take my words out of context like this?

“I said I’m too angry at my age to be obedient. Expressing I do not like the ‘term’. But if Peter Obi wins and actually changes the country better for all of us.

“How you all come up with fabricated lies beats me. But why all the lies? You heard me endorse him or ever anyone? Mr Mc lie lie. Yes and where did I called the youths zombies? I AM NOT BAT.”

2023: APC members in Imo are obedient to APC – Gov Uzodinma

Governor Hope Uzodinma of Imo State has said members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in his State are obedient to the party while deflecting a question that the Labour Party will sweep the South East States in the 2023 presidential election.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports Governor Uzodinma maintained that his business is to market the presidential candidate of the APC, Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the South East and that he will not join issue with the presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi.

Speaking during an interview on Channels TV’s Politics Today, monitored by this medium, Uzodinma noted that there are many loyal members of the APC in the South East.

“I am a politician and my party is APC and I have my candidate in the party. And I know we are consulting and speaking to our people to vote for our candidate. I am concerned with campaigning for my party.

“I don’t want join issue with Peter Obi whom you know is not a member of my party. But I know members of APC are obedient to APC,” Uzodinma said.

He added that the APC government in the state has done so much, saying he is confident that the reasonable minds in Imo State would vote for APC.

“I am very confident that the reasonable minds in Imo State will vote for my party. In 2021, I came here as a governor, 99% of our major roads were not passable. Today the major economic roads in Imo State have been managed in a very first class manner that even the opposition party members are commending my effort.

“From 1999 to date, the members of Imo House of Assembly have no place in the state to sit. They were attached to one local government secretariat here in Owerri. The Imo House of Assembly building that was abandoned for many years has just been rehabilitated,” he added.
