2023: Imo APGA’S Legal Adviser quits, joins Obi’s campaign team

The Legal Adviser of the All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA) in Imo, Chief Ifeanyi Olumba, on Monday resigned his position and joined the Labour Party (LP).

Olumba, who announced his resignation at a press conference in Owerri, said he had joined the campaign team of Mr Peter Obi, LP’s 2023 Presidential candidate, appealing to his supporters to go with him.

Olumba was a former Transition Committee Chairman of Orlu Local Government Area of the state. He was also the Board Chairman, Imo Broadcasting Corporation (IBC), before his election as APGA legal adviser.

“Today, I want to use this opportunity to announce my resignation as the legal adviser and member of APGA, Imo State Chapter.

“I consider this as a sacrifice and a contribution I have to make towards the task of nation-building, believing that we must build a new Nigeria.

“If we must do what previous generations and some current political leaders have not done, it only requires sacrifice. My resignation is not borne out of any ill feelings for APGA,” he said.

Olumba, also a Principal Partner in Ifeanyi Olumba Chambers, thanked APGA’s national leadership, former fellow state executives of the party and other members.

“Like many other progressive minded Nigerians, who want to see the nation rise again, I hereby throw my weight behind the Peter Obi/Yusuf  Datti-Ahmed 2023 presidential project, believing that there is nothing wrong with Nigeria that cannot be handled.

“My faith and believe remain unshaken that in the duo of Obi and Datti-Ahmed, we have found Plato’s ideal philosophers and statesmen,” he said.

Conversation Nigeriana [1] – By Hope Eghagha

Bankole: Shame! Shame! Shame! The presidential candidate of a major political party Senator Bola Ahmed Tinubu says he didn’t attend primary and secondary schools. How did he enter a university? I smell a rat!

Oreva: A big rat smells in the land, smells from Aso Rock and round the states of the federation.

Okoro: How come he is committing this perjury?

Bankole: It seems there are issues about his identity and historical past! This is a fantastic story that needs a thorough investigation.

Bishak: I hope you can prove what you are saying!

Bankole: Prove? I will answer your query with a question. Did he not declare primary and secondary schools when he contested for governor?

    Bishak: I don’t know. I wouldn’t know.

Okoro: That is because you don’t care to know!

Bankole: In the days of Peter Pan or Dele Giwa, journalists would have probed the story of no-school, no-certificate with a broomstick to ferret out his classmates and acquaintances to get the truth. These days they hobnob with politicians for their share of the national cake!

Okoro: The days of investigative journalism are gone forever!

    Bankole:  What is somebody hiding?

Oreva: Plenty! There is plenty to hide! But if did not attend primary and secondary schools in Nigeria, which classmate would any classmate be found?

Bankole: There are classmates! He attended schools in Nigeria. Seek and ye will find, so says the good book.

Iyortem: Yes, there are classmates. I know some of them!

Okoro: It is a serious matter. I don’t know what has befallen our country. The incumbent president also has no secondary school certificate. When he was asked to produce one, he took over twenty lawyers, all Senior Advocates of Nigeria to bully the judges in court and to defend his ‘certificatelessness!

Oreva: That’s a new word in the dictionary! Certificatelessness! I will ask my teacher what it means!

Okoro: Talking about teachers! I had this teacher in school who used to say something like ‘the dog ate my homework! Hahahahahahaha!

Oreva: If the dog ate your homework whose fault is it?

Bishak: Let’s be serious fa! This is not the time to joke please. What does the president need a secondary school certificate for? Secondary school certificate! Look here, you people are searching a malu in a shopping mall. What does a man who had ruled the country as a military Head of State need a secondary school certificate for? That he ruled the country before is enough certificate!

Bankole: It’s a Constitutional requirement! In his own case, he claimed that though he attended a secondary school, his papers were submitted to Army Headquarters. Army Headquarters said they don’t have his papers. By the way, whoever submits his original certificate to an institution? A fat lie came into the matter at that stage.

Okoro: it seems it is only Peter Obi that has tendered a certificate to INEC. Atiku Abubakar didn’t declare one either!

Oreva: Ibabo! You don’t mean this do you?

    Okoro: Every word of it!

Oreva: Now I know why ASUU has been on strike for five months and it doesn’t perturb Aso Rock!

    Bishak: What is the link?

Oreva: We are being ruled by ‘certificateless’ people who have no respect for certificates. If they have reached the pinnacle of governance without certificates, why should they bother about irritant communists and socialists in ASUU?

Bankole: But the strike is beyond ASUU. It is about the lives of our children and grandchildren, the country’s future!

Oreva: Of course I know. I’m worried about the entrenched culture which promotes mediocrity on account of ethnicity!

Bishak: You are free to say anything you want to say. That is how your people want to prevent my people from reaching the highest office in the land. Everything is certificate! Certificate! Certificate! Do certificates certify one to be a good leader?

Iyortem: Wrong! Wrong! Don’t give the impression that the north has no people who are highly certificated. Far from the truth!

Oreva: What has this country degenerated to?

Bankole: That is the word- degenerate! We have degenerated and lost all claims to integrity. How can a man who has lied about his early education be allowed to contest for the presidency? Where are the social activists in the country? Why don’t they go to court?

Oreva: Go to which court? Eh? Which court? Will any judge in Nigeria have the balls? Will any judge dare to disqualify the Presidential candidate of the ruling party? Do you think any sensible judge wants to receive the Onnoghen treatment? Not even the Supreme Court whose head has been tarred with the brush of corruption can do that!

Iyortem: A Ghana must go bag filled with greenbacks can give you any verdict you want. I hear that judges sometimes write two verdicts. The final verdict is dependent on who pays more!

Okoro: Is it our judiciary we are discussing in such derogatory terms?

Iyortem: Yes, it is. The same judiciary that produced the likes of JIC Taylor, Ayo Irikefe, Gaius Tutu-Obaseki, Kayode Eso, Teslim Elias and others? O God of heaven where did we go wrong?

Bankole: We went wrong when we allowed politicians to soil every facet of our national life!

Bishak: Are these politicians not from our families, friends, churches and Mosques? How are they different from any of us? We are like the politicians. The politicians are like us.

Okoro: Tufiakwa! I’m not a politician. I’m a businessman. I don’t play politics with business. I have market to sell; you have market to buy! Finish.

Oreva: But some of those delegates were businessmen! They sold their consciences!

Iyortem: Do you blame them? It was a life-time opportunity to reap big money and plough into their businesses. Some of them have suffered for many years, supporting politicians who promptly abandon them once they win elections.

Bankole: It is time to boycott all the certificateless candidates in the country!

    Oreva: Is this a motion!

    Bankole: Yes

    Oreva: I second it!

    Okoro: I support it too:

    Iyortem: Me too!

    Bishak: Do you have PVCs?

  • Afenifere snubs Tinubu for Obi as Babachir Lawal faults Shettima’s choice

Afenifere snubs Tinubu for Obi as Babachir Lawal faults Shettima’s choice

The leader of the pan-Yoruba socio-political organisation, Ayo Adebanjo, has declared his support for the 2023 presidential bid of the Labour Party candidate, Peter Obi.

Adebanjo, who featured in an online radio programme, Yoruba Gbode, yesterday, said the ex-Anambra State governor would not disappoint Nigerians if elected the country’s president next year.

He also expressed doubt about the ability of the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Bola Tinubu and his Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) rival, Atiku Abubakar, to steer the country’s ship effectively.

The Afenifere leader argued that Tinubu sold President Muhammadu Buhari to Nigerians in 2015 because of his selfish interest, adding that the ex-Lagos State governor would give continuity to incompetence if elected next year.

Adebanjo has been unrelenting in his support for the South-East to produce Nigeria’s president in 2023.

He said: “In my opinion, only Peter Obi can rule the country independently without the influence of these criminals in the government. Tinubu will only give continuity to Buhari’s incompetence.

“We know Peter Obi very well , that’s why we endorsed him. He will not disappoint Nigerians, let’s put tribal differences apart and vote the right leader in.

“Tinubu sold Buhari to over 200 million Nigerians for his own selfish interest of wanting to rule after Buhari. None of them loves Nigeria.

“Easterners are also Nigerians, they deserve to rule. I am sure Peter Obi will not subject himself to the northerners like Tinubu and Atiku would do if elected.”

2023: Tinubu’s Muslim-Muslim ticket ‘dead on arrival’ – Babachir Lawal

Meanwhile, former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal, has faulted the announcement of a Muslim-Muslim ticket by the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Lawal, in a note he personally signed yesterday, described the decision as a “disastrous error.”

Mr Tinubu on Sunday had announced former Borno State Governor, Kassim Shettima, as his running mate in the 2023 presidential election.

    Both men are Muslims.

Lawal, who backed Tinubu during the APC presidential primaries, said the choice of Mr Shettima was a sign that the APC presidential candidate has “been cornered by self-serving, hero-worshiping, lapdogs.”

“The northern governors and some northern moslem elites must have persuaded him that they will never vote for a ticket that has a northern Christian on it. And he has agreed with them,” Mr Lawal said.

“But if he thinks a Moslem-Moslem ticket will win him the northern Muslim votes, he should have a rethink. They will massively vote for one of their sons because it is in their nature to do so. Buhari, their first son will not be on the ballot in 2023. Atiku their second son will be.”

    Read Babachir’s full note below:

I thought I will be able to avoid commenting on the disastrous error by my very good friend, Sen Bola Ahmed Tinubu in his choice of a running mate.

I will be the very last person to stand in the way of my very good friend Tinubu’s path to the presidency. This is because since 2011 my consuming passion has been for him to succeed Buhari as President of Nigeria.
It will not be true if I say that I did not see it coming. I have often read his body language, picked up snippets from several discussions with his lapdogs (some of whom, sadly are Christians but most of whom are moslems) and I have conveyed my reservations to them against the pitfalls of a moslem-moslem ticket towards which I sensed they were drifting.

As part of my obligation to him, a close friend, I had on many occasions argued the merits and demerits of both ticket permutations to him. I have done so in both verbal and written form and I have likewise, done so with some of his close respectable associates and friends. In all instances I had left him with the sole responsibility for his final decision arguing that in the end the consequences of the outcome of any bad decision will be his to
bear. There might be some collateral damages though. I have also on several occasions passed on to him counsels and messages from some well meaning Nigerians intended to alert him on the possible outcomes of the Presidential ticket permutations.

Tinubu is a very good man. He is a great listener. He has a very humble and friendly disposition to every one. He is very generous in both cash and kind, especially where it could advance his political interests. But I have realized that it is in the nature of power that sycophants and lapdogs have the most influence on leaders with such character traits. They will lie to him, malign and disparage others and generally do any thing to curry his favor and to also put well-meaning associates in bad light. I suspect this is what has
happened to my friend. He has been cornered by self-serving, hero-worshiping, lapdogs.

It never used to be like this. While in his hay-days in Lagos, he surrounded himself with smart, street-wise guys that could tell truth to power. He had Rauph Aregbesola, Yomi Osinbajo, Babatunde Fashola, Dele Alake, Muiz Banire, etc.The Lagos days were the days of think-tanks, strategic planning, monitoring and evaluation, principles and ideologies. But
these people have since grown-up and moved up to establish their own systems living my friend stranded. Nature they say abhors vacuum.

Welcome the Abuja equivalent. But the Abuja equivalent are people inflicted with the modern Nigerian diseases – religious bigotry, sycophancy and morbid tribalism. They are mostly political jobbers who are most times not averse to the application of diabolical means. Gone are the days of think-tanks, and strategic planning. Gone are the days of principles and ideologies. Try and call a meeting; they will not attend. Try and make a plan; they will sabotage it. Everything is ad-hoc, everything is chaotic because they excel in such environments. The result is that they have played on his longterm ambition to be President and have built it into a sort of desperation and a crescendo that easily justifies this satanic resort to a Muslim-Muslim ticket. This is the calamity that has befallen my
    friend.

And why Kashim Shetima? He is an overambitious man who has a Machiavellian bent and has lots of money with which to procure a preferred-candidate status among Tinubu’s lapdogs. And as we are beginning to see, to also procure bogus supporters especially from among the Christian community to help launder his no-so-good image.

But as a popular proverb goes: “Those whom the gods want to destroy they first make mad”. It appears that the gods want to destroy the APC and its Presidential Candidate and have chosen the instrumentality of the northern Moslem governors and their super ambitious tool and Kashim Ibrahim for this purpose. Alhaji Kashim Shetima is a Greek gift from the Northern governors to Tinubu. I advise Bola to make sure Kashima’s two hands are always in his plain sight and empty.

True, based on the advise of his new friends, Bola Ahmed Tinubu has made his choice. And I am sure he thinks he is ready for the out come of that choice. He has chosen to bring religion to the front burner of Nigerian politics. And being a Muslim he has chosen to take sides with his own religion. For all he cares, Christians can go to blazes with their
votes. But he must also be told that there will consequences for this choice. Some of them are that Christians all over the country will revolt against the APC to put the chances of his election in serious jeopardy. It will also put the election of all Christians standing for elections in Christian dominated areas in jeopardy. This could result in APC being a minority party in both the National and State Houses of Assembly.

Now tell me which Christian will vote for APC with the following contraption: Moslem Presidential Candidate (Lagos), Moslem Vice Presidential Candidate (Borno), Moslem National Chairman (Nasarawa), Moslem Deputy National Chairman (Borno), Moslem President (Katsina); Moslem Senate President (Yobe); Moslem Speaker (Lagos); Moslem Deputy Speaker (Plateau) e.t.c. APC the great! Wu na de try woh!

The northern governors and some northern moslem elites must have persuaded him that they will never vote for a ticket that has a northern Christian on it. And he has agreed with them. But if he thinks a Moslem-Moslem ticket will win him the northern Muslim votes, he
should have a rethink. They will massively vote for one of their sons because it is in their nature to do so. Buhari, their first son will not be on the ballot in 2023. Atiku their second son will be.

Proof of a possible Islamic agenda was leaked when Governor Ganduje, the “Kadmul Islam”, gave advance notice that Tinubu had assured them he would be nominating a moslem as his running mate. For those who might not know, Governor Ganduje has a foundation called “Ganduje Foundation” which purpose according to its website is to “provide selfless service to humanity and Islam” but whose primary purpose it appears is the conversion of Christians to Islam.

So if my very good friend Tinubu in a desperate bid to become President allows himself to made into a religious bigot or even a mujahideen, he is welcome. But it is a risk that will not play out positively for his presidential bid. But, were he to win and become President of Nigeria, it will be as a sectional President; an Islamic President. And he will surely face
massive discontent and opposition even before taking off.

Expecting Nigerians to ignore this crass insensitivity to the country’s diversity amounts to acceding to the perpetration of very grave injustice and discrimination against a huge segment of the society. No one who seeks to be president of Nigeria should ever deploy the tool of religious extremism and exclusivism as a tool to win elections. This is very very
dangerous. And this is very sad.

But, baring any last minute change of mind, Bola has made his choice. He should be bluntly told that in this choice Nigerian Christians clearly see a pending Islamic Republic
of Nigeria in its infancy and are right to be severely anxious. There is gloom among the Christian community all over the country since Tinubu announced Kashim Shetima as his running mate. Are the generality of the moslem ummah happy with this? The answer is a resounding NO.

How then do we respond? The decision as to how to respond to this deliberately senseless act of provocation is both corporate to each religious group and also personal to each voter that love peace, and hate injustice. Christians want to continue to leave peacefully with their moslem neighbors at home, at school, at the work place, in the markets and on the streets as we have always done or desired to do. And I am sure Moslems share this view too. No one person’s ambition to rule over us should be allowed
to set us apart and at war with one another.

Bola Ahmed Tinubu, should be compelled upon by whoever can do so to rescind this decision. President Mohammed Buhari should exercise his powers as the Commander-inChief and as the APC Leader to revoke this nomination of a VP by Tinubu. The APC National Chairman should refuse to sign the nomination forms if not rescinded.

There is a story in the bible on how some people responded to similar provocation: “And when all Israel saw that the king did not listen to them, the people answered the king,

“What portion do we have in David? We have no inheritance in the son of Jesse. To your tents, O Israel! Look now to your own house, David.” So Israel went to their tents” (1 Kings 12:16).

I will love for Bola to be our next President. But I am afraid a Moslem-Moslem ticket will be “Dead on Arrival”. And the arrival date according to INEC’s election time table is 25th February, 2023. This ticket will drag down the whole APC members to the pit. We all should reject it.

Eid-el Kabir: Obi calls for peaceful co-existence among Nigerians

Former Anambra state governor and the presidential candidate of the Latour Party,  Peter Obi, has felicitated with  Muslims in Nigeria on the celebration of Eid-el Kabir while urging Nigerians to sustain hope in the nation.

Obi made this statement known in a message made available to newsmen, he said that the Eid-el Kabir celebrations remind Muslims and Nigerians the need for peaceful co-existence and encourage the pursuit of lasting peace and unity.

Obi said the season also afforded the Muslim faithful the opportunity to pray, in a special way, for the country which, he said, is passing through very severe challenges. He said the nation needs divine intervention to be able to overcome the challenges facing it.

“We are at a very dark moment in our nation’s history, where it seems that every noble ideal that makes us a nation is collapsing before our eyes. Insecurity in the country has become unbearable, while our economy continues to struggle under the weight of bad governance and financial mismanagement of our leaders. With prayers and hardwork, we shall overcome,” Obi stated.

He urged Nigerians not to give up on the country, but to renew their zeal in working towards building a new and more productive nation for all. He maintained that with good leadership, Nigeria will be rescued from the doldrums and placed on the path of growth and development.

“We have no other nation but Nigeria, and we must not let it collapse. Let us now break the barriers of religion that divide us, and unite to take back our nation for progress and development,” he said.

  • 2023: Why I delayed in picking my running mate – Peter Obi

2023: Why I delayed in picking my running mate – Peter Obi

Presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), Peter Obi on Friday unveiled his running mate for the 2023 presidential election and gave a reason why he delayed in making his choice.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports Peter Obi to have said the delay was a result of the detailed effort he had to put in to search for someone who is eminently qualified for the office of the vice president.

Recall that the name of Doyin Okupe, Director General of Peter Obi Campaign Organisation had been submitted to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) as a temporary running mate for Peter Obi.

Okupe’s name was submitted to INEC in order for the Labour Party to beat the deadline set by the commission for the submission of vice presidential candidates.

However, on Thursday, Okupe submitted a letter to INEC, withdrawing from the position, and paving the way for Senator Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed to emerge as the substantive vice presidential candidate of the party.

Speaking at the event, Obi said Baba-Ahmed was eminently qualified to bring his private sector and academic achievements to bear in the drive to rescue Nigeria from the primitive politics of ethnicity.

According to him, the party is able to find somebody who is eminently qualified to be the vice president of Nigeria to secure, unite and make Nigeria productive.

He said it was the party’s intention to secure, unite and make Nigeria productive and that this could not be done without having people with similar visions and ideas prepared for the task ahead.

“I have the honour to present to you somebody I can call a friend, a younger brother and God willing the next vice president of Nigeria in the name of Sen.Yusuf Baba-Ahmed.

“He has been described as one of the brightest, youngest personalities in Nigeria who has distinguished himself in all areas.

“He brings to this mission a great wealth of experience from his background in the private sector to public sector and a global knowledge that will help in a journey of turning around this country.

“Today our country is facing so many challenges which I don’t want to mention because we are just here to introduce our Vice Presidential candidate.

“I will not be doing a great service to the country if I don’t mention some of them, we are today the poverty capital of the world.

“We are today, hugely indebted; people are hungry and angry and all these are the cumulation of bad leadership”.

Obi said the party would bring all Nigerians into a big tent where everybody would be involved in ending the primitive politics of ethnicity, religion and all sorts of things.

He said that the party would have a team of people who would join in building the Nigeria they desired and hoped in the country.

”The two of us with the same background will be able to start this process.

“Now that we have completed the cycle of nominations, we will soon in the next few days or more, be able to come out with policies and manifestos that would be anchored on the 17 SDG positions.

“This is  because we must rescue this country, ensure that this country is secured; this country is united and this country is productive.”

Obi said the party would transform the vast lands in the north to oil, adding that land was the equivalent asset and it would be engaged agriculturally.

He said the country would be transformed and it would be productive again, leveraging on the knowledge of the two candidates from the private sector.

“It is not just going to be two of us, it is not our election but your election.

“Those who tell you about structures, tell them your children, your family; you are the structures.

“They cannot continue to scare us with those words.

“We will take back our country and even convert them into the structures, their structures will be our structures, they will follow us.”

Reacting, the Vice Presidential candidate, Yusuf Baba-Ahmed expressed gratitude to the party for considering him as the vice presidential candidate.

“My task is simple and it is to accept this nomination and this candidacy.

“The undeniable, unchallengeable fundamental reason for being on this ticket is to rescue Nigeria, and it goes without saying that you can only rescue that which is in trouble; Nigeria is likened to that.

“I cannot afford not to be part of the movement to rescue Nigeria.

“The second reason is that I believe in the greatness of Nigeria; I believe there will be peace and prosperity; I believe Nigerian people will unite.”

Baba-Ahmed said that he would use his educational background and experience to change the nation, adding that the fertile land in the North is the crude oil of the nation and Nigeria’s future would be great.

“He who was motivated by success in the private sector and fought and became a governor for eight years and since then has maintained integrity and honour, is one that will not fail in campaign promises.

“He who believes in financial propriety will not engage in political rascality; Peter Obi, he who believes in credibility and integrity in the matter of who to associate with will not mismanage personal, human and community relations, Peter Obi.“

The Chairman of the Party, Julius Abure, said that the party proved to people that it could achieve any feat, adding the event was a clear message.

Abure said that the party intentionally went in to search for a competent candidate and found Baba-Ahmed worthy.

“Those who have held the country hostage should know that it is no longer business as usual .

”The time for the people has come, a  people’s movement has come, It is time for the people of Nigeria to be liberated from hunger, from poverty, from unemployment, from insecurity and bad governance.

“The people have pointed where they want to be in 2023; I am  very happy about the mood of the people, the time of the people has come.”

The Labour Party had to shift attention to Senator Baba-Ahmed after the crash of the initial romance with the New Nigerian People’s Party Chieftain, Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso who declined to be Obi’s Vice.

The source further said the choice of the former Senator, who is also an economist and a well known anti corruption crusader elicited resounding excitements among the supporters of Obi who believe that they will make a perfect team.

Senator Baba-Ahmed who is in his forties is also considered by Obi’s supporters who are mostly youths as a good bridge between the old and younger generations.

Pairing with a much younger person like Baba-Ahmed is equally considering as a means to seamless transition to the new breeds of leadership in the country.

The former Senator represented Zaria Federal Constituency of Kaduna State in the House of Representatives from 2003 to 2097 and was elected Senator for Kaduna North 2011 under the umbrella of All Nigerian People’s Party, (ANPP).

He is the founder and Pro-chancellor of Baze University Abuja and the the Baze University Hospital which is said to be the biggest private hospital in Africa today.

2023 presidency: Peter Obi is being set up – Aisha Yesufu

Co-convener of the Bring Back Our Girls Campaign (BBOG), Aisha Yesufu has alleged plans to set up the presidential candidate of Labour Party (LP), Peter Obi.

She claimed that the same tactics used against the EndSARS protesters would be used against Obi.

The activist in a tweet she shared reacted to a recent post by a Twitter user who frowned at Obi for apologizing over the attitude of his followers.

The Twitter user @General_Oluchi, wrote: “It bothers me when Peter Obi apologizes. What is he apologizing for? Did he force any of us to support him or does he think people won’t vote for him because his supporters are tackling idiots online? Aggression is the only language these people understand so no need apologizing.”

Yesufu in her reaction wrote, “What he doesn’t get is that he is being set up! They will carry the same thugs they used to attack #EndSARS protesters and destroy towns, give them T-shirts with his picture and say they are his supporters.

“They will then be turning people against him. They did that with #EndSARS.”
